Goud makes ton but East secure first-innings lead

An unbeaten 125 from Central Zone’s middle-order batsman Yere Goud failed to secure his side the vital first innings lead in their Duleep Trophy encounter against East Zone at the famed Eden Gardens, Kolkata.Central, who started the day on 136 for five, kept losing wickets at regular intervals; Raja Ali (11) being the first to go. Harvinder Singh (11) Kulamani Parida (8) and Sanjay Pandey (2) all failed to provide Goud with the support he was looking for.Last man Narender Hirwani, however, proved more resolute; he made 38 off 54 balls with seven fours and helped Goud add 95 runs for the last wicket. Goud was the undoubted star of the show for Central making a patient 125 off 363 balls with 20 fours. For East Zone, Assamese medium-pacer Mark Ingty and Bengal left-arm spinner Saurasish Lahiri claimed three wickets each. The home team’s celebration after securing a first innings lead of 51 was short-lived. Central Zone medium-pacer Harvinder Singh removed both the openers to get his side firmly back into the game. Orissa batsmen Rashmi Ranjan Parida, who made an unbeaten 53, and skipper Sanjay Raul, who made 32 not out, though ensured that their team ended the day well-placed at 102 for two. With just a day’s play left, East are in a strong position after having secured the first-innings lead. An outright win, though, might just prove beyond their grasp.

Angus Fraser to retire

Angus Fraser will be retiring from First Class Cricket immediately following the final Benson and Hedges zonal match on 6th May 2002. Angus has been offered the position of Chief Cricket Correspondent of The Independent newspaper and Middlesex have agreed to release Angus from his contract to enable him to take up his new career with the media."It is the end of an era" said Phil Edmonds, the Club Chairman. "Gus has been a magnificent servant of the club and England and we are very sorry to lose him. He did a great job for us last year as captain and we would have loved him to continue with the improvements the club have recently made, but opportunities like this do not come along very often, and Gus and the club are right to consider his longer term future. We wish him every success".Angus will continue to captain the club until the 6th May, when Andrew Strauss will take over as captain.

PCB defends 'thought leader' concept

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Tuesday hit back at criticizm over the appointment of Dr Aamer Siddique, the human resource consultant, who will be travelling to Australia as ‘thought leader’.The chairman of the board Lt Gen Tauqir Zia, also told PCB’s website, that the cost being quoted in a section of press on Siddique’s tour was not Rs one million.”One problem in our environment is that the moment you digress from the trodden path, and try new ideas, instead of getting marks for taking new initiatives, you get uncalled for criticism,” Tauqir was quoted as saying on cricinfo.com.Instead of the cost involved, the point to note here should have been the merit of the concept and the suitability of the person engaged. We would like to focus on the benefits rather than the cost. And we feel that any expenditure on the development and self-enrichment of the human resource representing Pakistan at this critical juncture is money well spent. While we do not want to be drawn into an unnecessary controversy, the fact of the matter is that for one we have observed that Dr Aamer’s contribution in the team’s recent resurgence was of some consequence.”Secondly, the sum involved has been wrongly quoted as one million rupees. The actual cost is much less. And, let me repeat that the benefit of having a human resource specialist available to the boys by far outweighs the cost,” the PCB chairman said.

Local derby victory for BAT could see them go top

BAT Sports could climb back to the ECB Southern Electric Premier League summit if they can overcome neighbours Calmore Sports in the annual Totton all-day derby at Southern Gardens, 11 o’clock. But they will need a helping hand from Bournemouth, who host weakened Havant at Chapel Gate.Havant, ten points ahead at the top, travel west minus three front line players and another key all-rounder injured.Opening batsman Andy Perry, teenage wicketkeeper Steve Snell and left-arm spinner Phil Loat are all missing, while Havant opening bowler Malcolm Hobson has a hamstring injury and will probably play as a batsman. It’s given Bournemouth an ideal opportunity to win their first all-day `time’ game – and claw their way back into contention. BAT and Havant are going well and are probably favourites at this half-way stage," says Bournemouth skipper Matt Swarbrick."If we are to get back into the scrap, we’ve got to beat these teams – and that starts with Havant tomorrow."But BAT acknowledge that beating Calmore Sports will be anything but straight forward. "The Calmore lads raise their game for these derbies and ran us close twice last season."We’ve won 11 all-day games on the bounce, but that counts for nothing in these type of games," says BAT skipper Dave Banks, who is expected to send out an unchanged team.Calmore’s hopes will hinge on the performance of all-rounder James Hibberd, who has recently had a successful trial with Kent 2nd XI.Hibberd will be joined by South Wilts pair Jamie Glasson and Russell Rowe in Wiltshire’s three-day Minor Counties Championship fixture against Devon at South Wilts on Sunday.Bashley (Rydal), who returned to winning ways at South Wilts last week, entertain early season pacesetters Andover, who have fallen away since the all-day cricket began.Andover rushed to the front after winning four of their five 50-over matches, but consecutive defeats by Portsmouth and BAT Sports have dropped them to third place.Bashley plan to send out an unchanged side, with Western Australia reserve wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi continuing his seam bowling role."Luke’s presence in the Bashley wicket-taking stakes is raising a few eyebrows in Perth, but he’s a very useful little medium-pacer … as his figures recently have proved," said Bashley skipper Neil Taylor.South Wilts, who play Havant in the ECB Club Championship zone final on Salisbury Wanderers’ adjoining pitch at Bemerton on Sunday (2pm), go to Burridge, whose left-arm bowler Steve Willams (pulled hamstring) is sidelined for several weeks.Russell Rowe, who hit a defiant 96 in Wiltshire’s 153-run Minor Counties Championship defeat by Shropshire earlier this week, will expect to improve on his 343-run tally for the season.Former Hampshire all-rounder Matthew Keech is getting married tomorrow and misses Portsmouth’s home match with basement boys Liphook & Ripsley.Portsmouth believe that, if they are successful against Liphook, they will have achieved Premier One safety.

Form on the day will decide Final, says Ganguly

England may be the bookies’ favourites to win tomorrow’s NatWest Series final against India at Lord’s, but India’s captain, Sourav Ganguly, isn’t setting too much store by what the bookies think. His team will face Nasser Hussain’s side for their tenth one-day international this year. The two sides are currently level at 4-4, with one match – atDurham last week – abandoned due to rain.”I think both sides have played well,” said Ganguly. “England came back well from 3-1 down in India. Here we have won four out of six and were well placed in the abandoned game in Durham. So we have had a pretty good time here.”I don’t believe in this word `favourites’ anyway. It is the team that playswell on the day that wins. It is a 100-over game and that means if things go wrong there is not a lot of time to get back.”I have seen a lot of teams win a lot of preliminary games and lose the finaland I have seen a lot of teams lose most of their preliminary games and lose thefinal.”India travelled to London from Bristol today, after completing their victoryover Sri Lanka last night. But England have rested since Tuesday’s dress rehearsal win over India at the AMP Oval.”It is hard when you play a day-nighter and wake up the next day and get onthe road, then play again the next day in a final,” added Ganguly.”I don’t know whether our board got the itinerary before we came here. But I think one-day games need to be well spaced out as they can be tiring. We knew we had to do it – now the important thing is to get your mind over it and get along.”Unlike Sachin Tendulkar, who made his first one-day hundred against England at Chester-le-Street last week, Ganguly still awaits a first limited-overs hundred against England. However he has scored a Test century at Lord’s – on his debut there.”I haven’t scored many runs in the one-dayers but tomorrow is another day,” he said.Tendulkar, who scored another ton against Sri Lanka at Bristol yesterday, will play despite a troublesome hamstring, but leg-spinner Anil Kumble will undergo a late fitness test on his calf.

Action all the way in the NUL

There is another week of Norwich Union League action all the way with this round of matches taking place on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The lights will be burning brightly and will no doubt illuminate some significant developments in the title, promotion and relegation battles that give every match a cup-tie atmosphere at this stage of the season. In Division One on Sunday, the Midlands become the focus of attention. Leicestershire Foxes entertain Yorkshire Phoenix with the visitors rather more in contention for a place in the frame than the home side who can probably relax as far as relegation are concerned. The same cannot be said of Nottinghamshire Outlaws and Somerset Sabres who meet at Trent Bridge. Both appear consigned to the drop.In Division Two, Essex Eagles have games in hand on the leaders still, but will want to get points on the board against Hampshire Hawks in an airborne battle at the Rose Bowl. That will spur on Surrey Lions – currently in third place – as they entertain Derbyshire Scorpion at The Oval. There are two Division One matches on Monday, with Warwickshire Bears against Worcestershire Royals the vital one when it comes to the top of the table. The day after meeting at trent Bridge, Somerset Sabres and Nottinghamshire Outlaws repeat the fixture at Taunton.Sussex Sharks meet Lancashire Lightning at Hove on Tuesday, and then, on Wednesday, it’s Kent Spitfires against Leicestershire Foxes at Canterbury while The Oval is the setting for Surrey Lions to play the Hampshire Hawks.

The team was really up for it, says Dav Whatmore

Sri Lankan coach Dav Whatmore praised Sri Lanka’s players after their crushing victory against Pakistan, particularly man of the match Sanath Jayasuriya and veteran Aravinda Silva.Sri Lanka won with 13.5 overs and eight wickets to spare after Pakistan were bowled out for 200. Jayasuriya (102*) and De Silva (66*) guided the hosts home with an unbroken 156 run stand.”I just felt that the boys were really up for it,” said Whatmore. “We had spoken the previous evening about the game and had vowed that it didn’t matter whether we won the toss or not, we had to just get on with the job.”The players enjoyed the thrilling atmosphere created by 30,000 flag waving fans.”I think it was a hellish advantage to be playing in front of a full home crowd – it was a nice atmosphere to be part of,” he said.”Pakistan are the kind of side that can beat you on any day, but they looked to be lacking confidence in the top order.””But I also thought we bowled really well and the catching in the deep was very good. However, our ground fielding can be improved,” he added.”Sanath’s performance was brilliant,” he said. “When he makes a good contribution we usually win.”He admitted to a moments concern when Jayasuriya decided to bowl three overs despite having only bowled a couple of balls at practice since dislocating his shoulder during the Morocco Cup 2002.”It was always part of the plan for him to bowl a couple of overs, but there was a risk considering that we were batting second,” he revealed. “But it was ok, although I think he experienced some pain when playing certain shots.”Aravinda de Silva also impressed Whatmore: “He looked very focused and ready for the competition. He played very straight and looked in control – it was just what you require in this kind of tournament.”

Champion Warrior returns, team named without start paceman

RECORD-breaking paceman Jo Angel will stride from a successful England league season into a youthful Western Warriors team to play Victoria on Sunday. The genial giant, who has taken more Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup wickets (387) than any other West Australian, will make his return on his club home ground at Lilac Hill. But, Champion Western Warriors speedster Brad Williams has been rested for matches against the Bushrangers. He has been granted leave to freshen up following his recent Australia "A" tour of South Africa.Star batting pair Mike Hussey and Murray Goodwin, who both enjoyed outstanding English County seasons this year, have also been granted a week’s leave by Warriors coach Mike Veletta. However, all-rounder Darren Wates has suffered a slight setback after he strained his groin. The 25-year-old had substantial surgery to his groin during the winter. His soreness after his first match conditions bowling last week will force the popular squad member onto the sidelines for up to three weeks.Williams has been excused from Warriors one-day matches against the Bushrangers on Friday and Sunday and a two-day game against his former state at Richardson Park in South Perth on Monday and Tuesday.Williams wants to refresh his mind and body for the start of the season in tour matches against England in Perth next month."I bowl at my best when I’m fresh," he said."A few days off after a pretty hectic travel and playing schedule in South Africa and I will be raring to go again."Coach Veletta said nursing his battery of fast bowlers is important in the Warriors limited-overs and first-class campaign in the approaching season."Brad had had a very intense three weeks on the road with Australia A," Veletta said."We are very conscious of our obligations not to overload these fast bowlers so early into the season with such a heavy schedule in front of them."Veletta said "nothing should be read into" appointments of all-rounder Brad Hogg and wicketkeeper-batsman Ryan Campbell as captains for the two limited-over matches against the Bushrangers.Friday’s Team (The match commencing at 10am)Brad Hogg (Captain), Kade Harvey, Andrew James, Stuart Karppinen, Marcus North, Luke Ronchi, Craig Simmons, Michael Thistle, Callum Thorp, Adam Voges and Geoff Cullen.Sunday’s Team (the match commencing at 10am)Ryan Campbell (Captain), Jo Angel, Sean Cary, Beau Casson, Michael Clark, Shaun Marsh, Scott Meuleman, Matthew Nicholson, Marcus North, Chris Rogers and Peter Worthington.

Campbell to return as Zimbabwe captain

The Zimbabwe selectors have announced the Zimbabwe ‘A’ team to play Pakistan in a three-day warm-up match at Country Club in Harare, starting on Monday 4 November, and the squad for the First Test match at Harare Sports Club, beginning on Saturday 9 November.Alistair Campbell has been named as captain of the Zimbabwe team for the duration of the Pakistan tour, with Andy Flower as his vice-captain. Campbell was appointed captain of the national side in 1996 and held the post for three years before resigning after a series of disappointing team performance and loss of personal batting form. This time he will only be standing in as captain for the injured Heath Streak.Several newcomers are included in the Test squad of 18, although it is possible none will actually play this time. They are top-order batsman Mark Vermeulen (who does have one ODI to his credit); middle-order batsmen Stuart Matsikenyeri who was a notable contemporary of Hamilton Masakadza and Tatenda Taibu at Churchill School; Sean Ervine, a middle-order batsman and medium-pacer who has played nine one-day internationals; Richard Sims, a top-order batsman and off-spinner; Campbell Macmillan, a pace bowler who has recently written his way into the record books with a century for Midlands batting at number eleven; and Matabeleland all-rounder Gavin Ewing, a good middle-order bat and off-spinner.All are products of the Zimbabwe Cricket Academy, sponsored by CFX, except Ewing, who was turned down two years ago as he did not reach the required fitness level. Of those with Test experience already, Hamilton Masakadza returns as expected, released from his studies at the University of the Free State. Three players return after missing most or all of last season due to injury or loss of form: Guy Whittall, Andy Blignaut and Mluleki Nkala. Douglas Hondo is included, but his fitness is still in doubt. There are some notable omissions. Craig Evans, despite his prolific scoring in the Logan Cup, is omitted, but may well win a place in the one-day team. So is Doug Marillier, who has two Logan Cup centuries in three matches to his credit. Gavin Rennie is another whose high scores in the Logan Cup have failed to bring him recognition. Henry Olonga is excluded, although reports from Bulawayo suggested he is bowling really well at present.Several of the squad players are including in the Zimbabwe A team, and will know that a good performance there might earn them a place in the Test team. The Pakistani team, captained by Waqar Younis, arrive in Harare on Friday evening, 1 November, and will practise at Harare South Country Club on Saturday and Sunday before beginning their warm-up match on Monday.Zimbabwe First Test squad: *Alistair Campbell, Andy Flower, Grant Flower, Dion Ebrahim, Hamilton Masakadza, Guy Whittall, +Tatenda Taibu, Andy Blignaut, Mluleki Nkala, Travis Friend, Raymond Price, Douglas Hondo, Mark Vermeulen, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Sean Ervine, Richie Sims, Gavin Ewing, Campbell Macmillan.Zimbabwe ‘A’: *Guy Whittall, Dion Ebrahim, Mark Vermeulen, Grant Flower, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Richie Sims, Sean Ervine, +Tatenda Taibu, Mluleki Nkala, Blessing Mahwire, Campbell Macmillan. 12th Man: Gavin Ewing.
