Nick Woltemade transfer 'off the table' for Bayern Munich as director says ball is in Stuttgart's court despite agreement with striker

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl says there’s no recent progress on Nick Woltemade’s transfer, calling the matter “off the table” for now.

Bayern have had a difficult summer transfer window, missing out on the likes of Florian Wirtz and Nico Williams before finally being able to wrap up Luis Diaz's signing from Liverpool. Woltemade remains another target they are keen to bring in, but Eberl has indicated that he is another they have been forced to give up on for the time being, despite having an agreement with the 23-year-old.

The German striker had an amazing spell last season at Stuttgart and was very optimistic about joining Bayern this year. However, Stuttgart have rejected their offers so far, wanting to cash in as much as they can for their star striker or ensure that he stays for another season. This has irked both the player and Bayern, as the club did not even respond to the 2024-25 Bundesliga champions' enquiries. Eberl claims that after signing Diaz, the squad is in place, and they will wait for their injured players to return in October and handle things at their own pace.

WHAT EBERL SAID

Speaking to the media during a post-match conference, the sporting director said: "I think we've said enough about it. We've tried hard to get the player, but Stuttgart hasn't signaled that they want to talk. So the matter is off the table for us. There's no stop until September 1st. There's always some movement. But for now, we're in the lead. We're calm, we have our squad in place, and we'll see what happens."

Woltemade has since tried to speak with Stuttgart representatives to initiate talks with Bayern and discuss a possible transfer move. However,  The 2024 DFB-Pokal champions are reportedly firm on their stance and are only going to wait until the DFL-Supercup for offers after which they'll not allow the striker to leave. Stuttgart face Bayern in the Supercup on August 17.

Tom Helm four-for leads Middlesex effort with the ball

Glamorgan bundled out for 183 before visiting openers make solid start to reply

ECB Reporters Network17-May-2024Middlesex took charge of their Vitality County Championship match against Glamorgan in Cardiff, finishing the day on 62 without loss having bowled out the hosts for 183.Tom Helm was the most impressive of the bowlers, claiming 4 for 44 as Middlesex made the most of the decision to bowl first. He was well supported by Ethan Bamber, Toby Roland-Jones and Ryan Higgins who chipped in with wickets. The top-scorer for Glamorgan was Zain-ul-Hassan who made 34 after the top order had been removed by the Middlesex seamers.Middlesex batted for 21 overs at the end of the day and were 122 runs behind Glamorgan’s first-innings total at the close. The Glamorgan openers started out positively with Marnus Labuschagne and Eddie Byrom scoring nine boundaries inside the opening hour of the game. Labuschagne was showing a lot of attacking intent throughout his stay at the crease and that led to his downfall. He drove hard at a ball from Helm and was caught by wicketkeeper Jack Davies. It was the introduction of Ryan Higgins that brought about the end of Byrom, a sharp bouncer taking his gloves and ballooning up for a simple catch by Davies. Kiran Carlson was the next to go, and as with Labuschagne he drove at a ball with hard hands to be caught in the slips by Higgins. When these two teams met in the first match of the season Sam Northeast made the highest score at Lord’s when he plundered 335 not out from this attack. It was a different story here as he struggled to get started and never really settled. He was bowled by a snorter of a delivery from Helm that tore his off stump out the ground. When Helm dismissed Chris Cooke two balls later, bowled with a ball the batter left alone, Glamorgan were 92 for 5. That became 92 for 6 when Colin Ingram, the leading run scorer in first-class cricket this season, played a ball onto his stumps for 10 off the bowling of Bamber.Amidst the wickets tumbling at the other end Zain was playing a tidy innings and had reached 34 when he was caught at slip by Leus du Plooy via an attempted reverse pull, as Glamorgan had stumbled to 103 for 7.Andy Gorvin and Mason Crane held up the Middlesex attack for a stand of 31 before Gorvin was caught off a top-edged hook shot for 12.Crane made a career best 61 against Northamptonshire in April and he showed good application with the bat in this game as he finished undefeated on 32. It was his runs that allowed Glamorgan to reach the total that they did after the top-order collapse.Sam Robson and Mark Stoneman made the Glamorgan total look a long way under par as they navigated the new ball without much difficulty. Stoneman was the more fluent of the two as he made it to 42 not out at the close. Robson was undefeated on a patient 18 from 57 balls at the other end.

Real Madrid 2025-26 Season Preview: Daunting task awaits Xabi Alonso as new Blancos boss looks to get Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr & Co. back to the top

Los Blancos have invested heavily following last season's disappointment, but it remains to be seen whether they have done enough

Real Madrid are supposed to win the lot every season. And yet, over the course of the 2024-25 campaign, they looked pretty mediocre by their own lofty standards, going trophy-less (unless you count the UEFA Super Cup or FIFA's Intercontinetal Cup). That disappointment led to Carlo Ancelotti being shown the door, with Xabi Alonso installed as his replacement ahead of what proved to be an underwhelming Club World Cup for Los Blancos.

There is, however, belief around Santiago Bernabeu that things can turn around. Alonso is one of the brightest young coaching minds in the game, a proven winner in Germany, and has the kind of tactical nous to make sense of the puzzle that is Madrid's star-studded squad.

Restoring glory to Europe's most successful club will be no mean feat, though. Not only are there the usual pressures of being Real Madrid to deal with, but defending Spanish champions Barcelona are again looking mightily good under the tutelage of Hansi Flick. So how will Madrid fare in 2025-25? GOAL aims to answer all the big questions heading into Tuesday's opening La Liga game against Osasuna…

Getty Images SportMood around the Bernabeu

Real Madrid were a mess, by their standards, for the latter half of last season. As Barcelona took off, Los Blancos ran remarkably in place, leading to the exit of Ancelotti as well as a fairly significant squad overhaul to greet the incoming Alonso.

Madrid subsequently went all in on the Club World Cup, as they bought Trent Alexander-Arnold out of the final month of his Liverpool contract, expedited Dean Huijsen's signing, and delayed Jude Bellingham's shoulder surgery – all with the goal of bringing some silverware back to Spain. The result was an absolute battering at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals – one that saw Alonso admit that he has far more work to do with the squad than he thought.

There is still a pretty significant Kylian Mbappe-shaped problem to deal with, too. He scored 44 goals across all competitions during his debut campaign in Spain, winning himself the European Golden Shoe in the process, but there are a multitude of questions to be asked as to whether he makes this teamany better. Thus far, with Vinicius Jr and Bellingham's production falling off a cliff last year, it's hard to say that the France captain offers much of a substantial improvement.

Still, for all of the bad vibes, this is still Madrid, and fans results. There is plenty of debate, however, as to whether they will get them.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTransfer business

Most of Madrid's transfer business was completed ahead of the Club World Cup as they went for broke in the United States, but they have remained active in the market since their disappointing final-four exit.

Alexander-Arnold is, of course, the marquee signing after he flirted with a Madrid adventure for the best part of a year, though the Blancos had to pay €10 million to have him available at FIFA's summer jamboree. Huijsen, too, is a good piece of business despite the almost €60m cost, with his performances in the U.S. among the most impressive.

Elsewhere, Argentine teenager Franco Mastantuono looks mightily promising. An attacking midfielder who is bursting with quality, his role in this side is very much up in the air, but odds are Alonso won't be too concerned with having another intriguing midfield prospect on his hands.

The most curious acquisition so far was that of Alvaro Carreras. Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia seemed poised to make a perfectly agreeable left-back duo this campaign, but Madrid still went out and spent €50m on Carreras, a former academy product who impressed at Benfica last season. Given their need for a new central midfielder to fill the Toni Kroos-shaped hole in the team, it seemed an odd allocation of funds.

In terms of departures, Luka Modric and Luis Vazquez both departed after their contracts expired, while there remains intense speculation around whether Rodrygo will remain in the Spanish capital after he was repeatedly an unused substitute towards the end of last season and at the Club World Cup. There seems to be a new club linked with the Brazil forward every week, and thus would be an immense surprise if Los Blancos don't part with Rodrygo before the end of the window.

Pre-season performances

The dust has now settled on the Club World Cup, and it proved to be something of a mixed bag in terms of Madrid's performances. They looked really good for spells, and Huijsen proved that he should be immediately installed as a starting centre-back. But in their first test – the semi-final meeting with PSG – Los Blancos capitulated, as they found themselves 3-0 down midway through the first half before going onto ship one more goal late on in New Jersey.

That deep run in the U.S. meant the squad were granted an extended holiday after a gruelling 12-plus months, and they did not begin began their preparations for the new season until August 4, just two weeks before their first fixture of the season. A friendly against Austrian side WSG Tirol resulted in a 4-0 win upon Madrid's return to action, with Mbappe netting twice, but that is the only thing close to competitive preparation that the Blancos have enjoyed ahead of the season.

Madrid are, then, going into what is a pivotal campaign a little undercooked. Alonso made it clear that his team will need time on the grass to carve out an identity and playing style, and it remains to be seen whether figuring things out in a competitive environment will prove beneficial or otherwise.

AFPTalking tactics

Alonso wants to play some version of the 3-4-2-1 formation that won him the title with Bayer Leverkusen in 2023. The issue is that this Madrid squad seems grossly unequipped for the task. There aren't enough quality centre-backs or hard-running central midfielders, while only Bellingham is truly capable of playing as a No.10, and he won't be available until October at the earliest while he recovers from his delayed shoulder operation.

That means Alonso might have to get a little freaky. There will inevitably be an Alexander-Arnold in central midfield experiment at some point given he also has Dani Carvajal available to play at right-back, while the manager also tried a 4-3-3 during the Club World Cup, though he didn't get much success out of it.

The obvious advantage for Alonso is that he is a former Madridista and Florentino Perez's handpicked Ancelotti replacement. That should buy him time, whatever happens

It was Kane's decisive goal in the dying minutes that clinched the victory for Bayern. In a post-match interview, the Bayern coach says the team had a 'blackout' and distanced himself from speaking on the team's shaky performance.

Despite the team switching off in the 60th minute and conceding two goals, the Belgian coach remained unbothered and considers it to be normal given his 25 years of experience in cup matches. Speaking in the post-match interview about the team's display, the Bayern head coach said: "At some point we had a blackout; it happened very quickly. Olivia Smith, Ellie Carpenter & 10 new signings to watch as the Women's Super League season kicks-off

From Champions League winners to exciting young talents, there have been plenty of eye-catching players on the move in this summer's transfer window

This summer's Women's Super League transfer window has had pretty much everything. It's had a record-breaking transaction, taking Olivia Smith to Arsenal for the first million pound fee in the women's game; it's had heroes of the Lionesses' European Championship triumph on the move, with Michelle Agyemang loaned back to Brighton and Chloe Kelly making her Arsenal switch permanent; and it's seen established superstars move to the English top-flight for the first time, including two Champions League winners in Fridolina Rolfo and Ellie Carpenter.

It means there are a lot of new faces for fans of the WSL to get to know this summer, be they players who have already made a real name for themselves overseas, or young, upcoming talents with the potential to be world-beaters. That intrigue permeates across the league, too, with it not just the big guns who have been making a splash in the market.

So, who are the new signings that fans should be keeping an eye on for the 2025-26 WSL season? GOAL picks out 10 names worth tracking as the new campaign begins…

Getty ImagesFridolina Rolfo (Manchester United)

Right up there as a contender for the biggest signing of the WSL window is Fridolina Rolfo, whose release from Barcelona earlier this summer was due to the club's financial issues, not poor performance. Aged 31, the Sweden international arrives at Manchester United on a free transfer and brings not only top-class quality to the table but also a ton of experience, the kind of which head coach Marc Skinner is keen to add to his team as they look to take that next step and become a serious contender for all domestic honours, as well as being a regular in the Champions League.

A two-time European champion who has lifted titles in Sweden, Germany and Spain, Rolfo is a deadly winger who can create for others or find the back of the net herself with remarkable consistency. Injuries once threatened to derail her career, with her going as far to describe her battle with them as a 'war' at one point, but she has shown incredible resilience and work ethic to come out on top in that department, to mark herself out as one of the best wide players in the game. She is exactly the kind of footballer that United need in order to go to the next level.

AdvertisementBHAFCCarla Camacho (Brighton)

There are always exciting prospects that shine at youth team level who fans are desperate to see get their chance in the senior game, and Carla Camacho has been one of them for a long time. The striker has been a goal-scoring sensation for Spain's age-group sides, playing a key role in their triumphs at the 2022 Under-17 World Cup and the 2023 U19 Euros, but that never translated into significant opportunities at Real Madrid, where very few youth prospects have been able to breakthrough since the club's entrance into the women's game. An ACL injury at the end of 2023 didn't help her cause, either.

Camacho did manage to net a few goals as a fringe player in the Spanish capital last year, having returned from that devastating setback, but it felt like the right time for her to move on this summer, in order to increase the chances of a serious senior breakthrough. It's at Brighton, renowned for trusting in youth, that the 20-year-old will hope that happens. If Seagulls head coach Dario Vidosic can help her progress towards her incredible potential, he'll have quite a player on his hands.

Getty ImagesMaya Hijikata (Aston Villa)

Ranked 18th on the 2022 Women's NXGN list, Maya Hijikata has been one of the most exciting prospects in the Japan youth set-up for several years, and now she has the opportunity to show her talent to an even greater audience following a summer switch to Aston Villa. It was likely last year that the 21-year-old firmly put herself on the radar of many clubs, after winning the Golden Boot in the U20 Women's Asian Cup in March and carrying that form into the U20 World Cup in September, where she scored another five goals. Her efforts in those tournaments helped Japan reach two finals.

But Hijikata is not just a top prospect who has exclusively performed well in youth football. The versatile playmaker firmly established herself in Tokyo Verdy Beleza's first team, helping them to win the title in her final season, and had broken into Japan's senior national team, debuting in October of last year, before departing for England. As more and more Japanese talent flocks to Europe, and especially the WSL, Hijikata is one of the most exciting new arrivals to keep an eye on.

GettyOlivia Smith (Arsenal)

Until Lizbeth Ovalle's record-breaking move to the Orlando Pride, Olivia Smith was not only the biggest signing of the summer in women's football, she was the biggest signing the sport had ever seen. It was back in July that Arsenal made the 20-year-old the first million pound player in the women's game, owing to some electric displays for an inconsistent Liverpool side in her only season on Merseyside.

This move continues the remarkable ascendancy that has characterised Smith's young career to date. After one superb season with Sporting CP, Liverpool paid a club-record fee to sign the forward and now, after one year with the Reds, Arsenal have followed suit. She isn't the sort of finished article one might expect a team to splash so much cash on, but it is potential that the Gunners have fallen for, with the Canada international having plenty of room for growth alongside her already game-changing ability.

It's going to be intriguing to see how Smith adapts to yet another step up in level, as she prepares to turn out for a team that won the Champions League back in May and will expect to challenge for the WSL title this term.
