Spurs missed out on Kane 2.0 in £90m star who’s now Arsenal’s main man

In hindsight, it's pretty easy to hyper-analyse a football club's transfer activity, the ins and outs, the rights and wrongs, but after Daniel Levy appointed Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham Hotspur manager last June, it was clear that there was a new, focused vision.

And it was a good thing too, with Spurs fighting for success in the Premier League once again after missing out on continental qualification entirely; further issues might have been detrimental, with the likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle United, West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion all equipped to fight against the established 'big six'.

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy.

And with these aspiring outfits fighting tooth and nail to knock the Premier League scales off-kilter, Postecoglou's early workings down at N17 hardly received the momentum boost needed when club record scorer Harry Kane decided that he'd done his duty and completed a transfer to Bayern Munich.

Still, the recruitment strategy since Postecoglou's arrival has been a far cry from the misfiring, rueful approach that has precluded silver-laden success for over 15 years.

The Spurs ace who went from outscoring Bale to the "flop of the season"

This Tottenham dud is at the epicentre of a chequered transfer history.

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 5, 2024

Sure, Tottenham have enjoyed some sublime talents over the years but too many have fallen flat or slipped away.

Keeping hold of Kane and unleashing him at the spearhead for the best part of a decade, while it didn't bring silverware, is without question one of Tottenham's biggest success stories of recent history, the Three Lions skipper cemented as a Premier League great.

Harry Kane's Spurs career

Kane might have left Tottenham without any major honours, but he's cemented his name in the club's history books and is undoubtedly one of the Premier League's finest-ever goalscorers, behind only Alan Shearer in the scoring charts and with a superior rate of scoring.

After an itinerant opening to his professional career as he leapt from loan spell to loan spell, Kane eventually earned an opportunity in the closing stages of the 2013/14 Premier League season and announced himself with three goals and two assists from six matches at the end of the year.

The rest is history and all that; everyone knows of Kane's prowess as an elite centre-forward and he completed his Tottenham career as the club's record scorer, with a healthy haul of 278 goals and 64 assists across 430 fixtures, praised as a "supreme professional" by The Times' Henry Winter.

Harry Kane scores for Tottenham.

Having now made the move to Germany, Bayern Munich might be enduring a torrid domestic season but Kane has been typically imperious in his striking quality, posting 33 goals and eight assists from 33 outings thus far.

As mentioned, he is undoubtedly Tottenham's shining star of modern history, possibly the greatest player in the club's modern history, and keeping hold of him for all those years was truly momentous work from Levy and co.

Interestingly, as everyone knows, Kane was plucked from Arsenal in his formative years, with former academy coach Roy Massey revealing to talkSPORT that Kane "didn't have" what it took to rise through the Hale End ranks at the time.

A staggering mistake but a forgivable one in the circumstances; it would quite literally require impeccable prophetic thinking to ensure that every aspiring hopeful avoids the dreaded release.

And, while Tottenham can revel in that victory, they failed to convince Kane's fellow England international several years later, with Bukayo Saka – who is now valued at £90m by Football Transfers – rejecting the north London club as a boy in favour of the Emirates Stadium.

Why Bukayo Saka chose Arsenal over Spurs

Back in 2022, the man himself revealed that Arsenal's London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham had pursued his signature as a youth before he emerged as one of the Premier League's standout stars.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "I remember one session, and I don’t think I went to another one. But, yeah, I think it was just to go and try different clubs but we always had Arsenal in our hearts.

Bukayo Saka.

"There was Arsenal, Chelsea I was at for a bit, there was Watford, there was Tottenham. I think there was maybe two more but those are the ones that I can remember from the top of my head.

"Arsenal was the one I always wanted to go to. It seemed like they had a lot of faith in their youth and there was a clear pathway.

"You could see the players coming up from Hale End to London Colney, and my dad also really believed in the project and he loved Arsene Wenger a lot."

Arsenal are riding the crest of a wave at the moment, and that crest is golden. A stunning run of form in the Premier League has kept Mikel Arteta's side apace with indomitable champions Manchester City and resurgent table-toppers Liverpool.

Declan Rice has been the general in the engine room, William Saliba the rock at the back. Saka, though, is a prodigious attacking force capable of unlocking the sturdiest of defences with his pace and energy and invention.

Bukayo Saka celebrating for Arsenal.

As per FBref, the 22-year-old ranks among the top 11% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, assists and shot-creating actions, the top 16% for progressive carries and the top 7% for tackles per 90.

Regarding the current campaign, just the 16 goals and 15 assists across all competitions with nearly three months of action still to go, averaging 2.5 key passes, 4.8 ball recoveries and 5.9 successful duels per game in the Premier League, as per Sofascore.

One of the best in the world? It's been a matter for debate over the past several years but Saka is still so young and, as Arsene Wenger recently said, he is not unequivocally "world-class" – it would be a brave objector to call that one into question after his recent emphatic exploits.

There's no question that Saka would be the star of the show at Tottenham and would blend superbly with Heung-min Son on the alternate flank, offering a more versatile and creative style to the prolificness of the South Korean.

And indeed, extracting his impact and influence from Arsneal clutches over the past several years and placing it at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would have only served to swing the stones of power in Spurs' favour, perhaps providing a foundation for illustrious heights that certainly have not been recently.

Shafali, Poonam and Rodrigues fire as India clinch series

South Africa manage only 89 for 7 in pursuit of 141 in a truncated game

The Report by Shashank Kishore01-Oct-2019

South Africa women dropped three catches in the first four overs. India women nailed a direct hit with their very first opportunity through Pooja Vastrakar in the second over of the chase to remove Lizelle Lee, South Africa’s most dangerous batsman. This was just a small window to exhibit the gulf between both sides in a 17-overs-a-side contest in front of nearly 8000 fans in Surat.India defended 140, made on the back of vital knocks from 15-year-old Shafali Verma (46) and 19-year-old Jemimah Rodrigues (33). South Africa, although steady, didn’t get the big hits away in the face of some superb spin bowling from the Yadavs – Poonam and Radha.Seven overs into their chase, the asking rate touched ten runs an over and that resulted in a series of desperate heaves, slogs and mistimed reverse sweeps on a slow wicket. South Africa managed just 89 for 7 in the end; India’s 51-run win helping them clinch the series 2-0 with one game to play.Poonam came within a hair’s breadth of a hat-trick, after sending back Nadine de Klerk and Mignon du Preez. Where de Klerk was undone by dip and sharp turn, slicing a lofted hit to cover, du Preez holed out at long-on after being deceived in flight. Sune Luus, the captain, averted the hat-trick, despite being beaten on a slog, as she dragged her back foot back in time. At this stage, South Africa were 65 for 4 at the end of 11 overs, and the chase only went downhill from there on. Luus was out stumped in the next over to hand Poonam her third wicket.Where wickets were the order of play in the second innings, misfields and dropped chances were aplenty in the first. South Africa should have had Smriti Mandhana off the third ball but neither the bowler Shabnim Ismail nor mid-off ran across to pouch a top-edge. Mandhana was reprieved again on 6 when de Klerk put down a skier as she back-pedalled at extra cover.Shafali, too, lived dangerously, surviving a series of mistimed heaves and slogs. Her first boundary, in the second over, came off a streaky edge off a slog that flew past the wicketkeeper. She hit her straps only in the sixth over when she drove Luus superbly through extra cover, and then charged down the pitch to muscle a full toss over deep midwicket. India rode their luck to move to 43 without loss in six overs.Even as all this played out, Mandhana continued to live a charmed life as she was dropped for a third time on 11 at long-off by Tumi Sekhukhune. Then in the ninth over, Laura Woolvardt palmed a superb hit from Shafali at deep midwicket for six. Two (legal) balls later, Shafali was dismissed, with India well placed at 65 for 2.Harmanpreet usually likes to take her time to settle in, but on Tuesday she came out playing her shots. She stepped out and used her high backlift and long reach to muscle a huge six down the ground and also played the slog-sweep superbly, racing to 15 off six balls. Harmanpreet’s enterprise rubbed off on Jemimah Rodrigues, who in contrast to Harmanpreet, relied on timing and wristwork to keep picking off runs. She walked across to flick incoming deliveries through midwicket, fetched full deliveries from outside off to bisect midwicket and long-on, and often made room to get underneath the length and scythe the ball between cover and point. This fine exhibition of clean ball-striking gave India end-overs momentum. While Rodrigues didn’t stay till the end, her 22-ball 33 helped India plunder 71 off their last eight overs.South Africa lost Lee in the first over of the chase, when a misunderstanding resulted in Tasmin Brits turning her back on her after initially looking to pinch an overthrow. While South Africa had started with medium-pace from both ends, India began with spin from one end and immediately had the batsmen struggling for timing.Woolvardt and Brits added 39 off 37 balls, but by then the desperation to find the big hits was all too apparent. This played into the hands of Poonam, whose loop and flight – that didn’t give them any pace to work with – resulted in their undoing. Barring the twenties from Woolvardt and Brits, all other South African batsmen managed just single digits on a pitch where shot-making proved increasingly difficult as the game progressed. In the end, South Africa were left with a teasing thought: what might have been had they held onto their chances?

Wolves’ special £6.5m signing would now be worth more than Hwang in 2024

Wolverhampton Wanderers may have come unstuck against Coventry City in the FA Cup quarter-final on the weekend, but they are well on track for a top-half finish in the Premier League.

Following a campaign of discontent during 2022/23 where the Old Gold sacked a manager and flirted with the relegation zone, Gary O’Neil has transformed the club.

A solid back three has conceded 44 goals, the ninth-best defensive record in the top flight. But it is O’Neil’s attacking options which have been a pleasant surprise this season, with the Old Gold scoring 42 goals in 29 matches.

AFC Bournemouth managerGaryO'Neilapplauds the fans during a lap of appreciation after the match

This is 11 more than they achieved throughout the whole of the 2022/23 season, and it proves just how important it is to have attacking players on form.

It isn’t just one player who has grabbed the headlines, however. Pedro Neto has scored three goals and grabbed 11 assists, while Pablo Sarabia (12 goal contributions) and Matheus Cunha (18 goal contributions) have also contributed effectively throughout 2023/24, leading the Molineux outfit to ninth spot in the table at the time of writing.

Matheus Cunha

Alongside Cunha, Hwang Hee-Chan is their top scorer with 11 goals this term and his resurgence under O’Neil has been a big bonus as they chase another top half top-flight finish.

Hwang Hee-Chan’s statistics for Wolves this season

The South Korean forward was signed on an initial loan deal by former manager Bruno Lage in August 2021 and was widely praised by Wolves technical director Scott Sellars.

“He’s got a good pedigree, having played Champions League football and at a World Cup,” said Sellars.

“He’s got a lot of pace, power and strength – he’s probably a little bit different to what we’ve got, and we think he’s a strong acquisition for the squad.”

It didn’t take long for his presence to impress the hierarchy as the club paid RB Leipzig £14m to make the loan deal a permanent one in January 2022, and he finished the season with five goals in the top flight.

The 2022/23 proved to be a bit of a damp squib, however, as the forward managed to score just four goals for the Molineux side during the whole season, although it appeared like everyone suffered, as this total ranked him as their third highest scorer, just two goals behind Ruben Neves and Daniel Podence.

This season, however, Hwang has enjoyed a rejuvenation under O’Neil. The 11 goals have been supplemented with three assists and his contributions have been key to the Old Gold currently occupying a top-half spot.

The attacker ranks second among the squad for goals and assists (13) in the Premier League, while also ranking second for shots on target per game (0.6), fourth for big chances created (four) and for successful dribbles per game (1.5), showcasing his importance to the cause.

wolves-hwang-hee-chan-pedro-neto

According to Football Transfers, these displays mean Hwang is currently valued at €19m (£16.2m). This may not sound that impressive, but considering how poor a campaign he had last year, his valuation is currently back on the rise and more wonderful displays between now and May will see this break through the £20m mark.

There are a few players who are valued more than Hwang, however, with one being a former Wolves striker who played for the club between 2010 and 2012 – Steven Fletcher.

How much Steven Fletcher is worth in 2024 money

Of course, the Scottish striker is not currently valued higher than Hwang, as he is plying his trade for Wrexham in League Two at the age of 36.

But thanks to Totally Money, who have adjusted previous transfers for football inflation over the previous 30 years, it proves that Fletcher’s transfer fee is higher than Hwang’s current value.

Steven-fletcher-wolves

Indeed, Wolves managed to secure his signature for a fee of £6.5m, which looked like a wise investment considering his performances during his maiden season in the top flight. Totally Money, however, states that this fee, now adjusted for inflation, would be worth around £17.8m today.

That is ahead of Hwang’s current market valuation of £16.2m and proves just how much of a blinder Wolves made when they snapped Fletcher up over a decade ago.

Steven Fletcher’s statistics for Wolves

The centre-forward had built his reputation north of the border, scoring 45 goals for Hibs in 163 appearances, leading to a move to Burnley in 2009.

They had just been promoted to the Premier League and were looking for someone to spearhead their attack. 12 goals in 38 games during his only season at Turf Moor was a solid if unspectacular record, and it led to him being on the move again in 2010.

Former Wolves striker Steven Fletcher.

It got even better at Molineux for the former Hibs starlet, as he scored 12 goals in 34 matches during his debut season and his goals meant the club avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth, finishing in 17th spot, just one point ahead of Birmingham City.

Another 12-goal campaign followed as Fletcher continued to terrorise defences in the Premier League, although this time, his goals could not prevent the Old Gold from slipping back into the second tier at the end of the season.

With that, his two-season spell at the Old Gold ended, staying in the top flight courtesy of his move to Sunderland.

There is no doubt the club played a blinder by moving him on for more than double what they signed him for just two years earlier, with the 6 foot 1 hitman enjoying his stint in the Midlands.

Since then, he has played for six clubs and is still going strong for Wrexham at the time of writing, netting eight goals in the League during the current season.

The fact that his sale in 2012 eclipses the current market value of Hwang proves just how much Wolves hit the jackpot on the former Scotland international.

PCB revokes players' no objection certificates for T10 league

The board said it intends to ensure the primacy of the QeA Trophy which clashes with the T10

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has revoked conditional No Objection Certificates (NOCs) given to its players to feature in the Abu Dhabi T10 league, which is due to start from November 15.In a statement, the PCB said that the decision had been taken “to manage the players’ workload, continued work on their fitness levels [and] to ensure primacy and participation of its player in its premier Quaid-e-Azam Trophy”.The tournament is set to clash with a fitness and medical assessment camp at the National Cricket Academy, as well as several round of the QeA Trophy. The PCB added: “The decision has been made in the best interest of the players as well as to continue to enhance the credibility and reputation of the new domestic structure, which has been widely covered and reported across all media outlets.”The news is a significant blow to the T10 tournament, which was set to feature several Pakistan players. The majority of the Qalandars squad is Pakistani – including Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Hafeez, Imad Wasim, Faheem Ashraf and Imran Nazir – while other players who could be affected include Mohammad Irfan, Shoaib Malik and Sohail Tanvir. Afridi and Imran Nazir, however, will not be affected by the revokation of NOCs, given they have retired from Pakistan cricket. The PCB operate an informal “PSL plus one league” policy with regards to issuing NOCs to it players for leagues around the world. Beyond one other league, permission is viewed on a case-by-case basis, depending on the player’s fitness and Pakistan’s domestic and international commitments at the time. Mohammad Amir, Shadab Khan and Shaheen Afridi, for example, were recently included in the draft for The Hundred – which would constitute a league above and beyond the “PSL plus one” policy, but as things stand, ESPNcricinfo understands the PCB are expected to issue NOCs to the trio.
