A board official says hosting it this October would be ‘too big a risk’
Nagraj Gollapudi and Osman Samiuddin27-May-2020As the prospects of the men’s T20 World Cup proceeding on schedule in Australia this October recede by the day, the ICC board will consider alternative scenarios on Thursday.An official decision may not come after the board meeting – the ICC issued a statement to say that reports of a postponement were “inaccurate”– but according to one official familiar with the contingency planning, a tournament this year would be “too big a risk” in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. The official said the logistics of arranging a global tournament would be “impossible to manage,” and that the “safe option” would be to not have it this year.Alternative options as to when the tournament can take place were drawn up in a meeting of the Finance & Commercial Affairs (F&CA) Committee, an influential sub-committee within the ICC, on May 22.Although it is looking increasingly likely that international cricket will resume soon enough the challenges of bringing together 16 teams from across the world into one country and creating a bio-secure bubble for them is of a different scale altogether. The ICC has to take into account multiple travel restriction policies, different quarantine measures in different countries and the loss of revenue from a tournament played behind closed doors (not to mention the additional costs of playing matches in a bio-secure environment).It is possible that the ICC Board does not make the decision official tomorrow – the ICC pointed to a “number of contingency plans” in its statement – and instead waits till its annual conference scheduled for mid-July. But one official said leaving the final decision late would hurt all stakeholders. “If there is uncertainty too close to the actual event itself then stakeholders like the broadcaster will not like it.”The four main scenarios for when the tournament can be postponed to in chronological sequence are:Scenario 1: February-March 2021. Venue: AustraliaMoving the T20 World Cup to February-March next year. For that to happen though the ICC will have to reschedule the 2021 women’s ODI World Cup – currently scheduled between February 6 and March 7 in New Zealand – to start mid-January. The proximity of the events shouldn’t be an issue, the ICC having held back-to-back world events in 2017 with the men’s Champions Trophy and the women’s ODI World Cup in England. Another key advantage is that keeping it in Australia ensures a continuity to plans already in place.Questions: Will there be an appetite among the game’s commercial and broadcast stakeholders to have two men’s T20 World Cups in the same year (and three major ICC events overall) considering India are scheduled to host the 2021 men’s T20 World Cup in October-November? Scenario 2: October-November, 2021. Venue: AustraliaPostpone the event by a year without changing the venue. Australia can then play host to a big summer of cricket, which also involves the 2021 Ashes, scheduled from November through January 2022.Questions: India is already down as the host for the 2021 edition of the men’s T20 World Cup (tax exemptions notwithstanding). This would mean India hosting the event in October-November 2022, but one senior BCCI official has indicated the board would not be in favour as the 2023 World Cup is also scheduled to be held in India in February-March 2023: two global events would take a significant chunk out of the BCCI’s bilateral home season. It could also impact broadcast and commercial revenues to hold back-to-back global tournaments.Scenario 3: February-March, 2022. Venue: AustraliaAustralia host the tournament 14 months later subject to all other teams adjusting their international schedules.Questions: The predicament of two T20 World Cups within the space of five months remains, if India host the 2021 edition. Also would Australia want to play a global tournament on the back of five-Test Ashes which could leave some of their key players exhausted?Scenario 4: October-November, 2022. Venue: AustraliaAustralia hosts the tournament two years down the line. The tournament still gets played in the Australian summer and by then crowds could be back and gate money and merchandising are key revenue streams for Australia.Questions: Again, would the ICC, as well as the broadcaster, want two world events in the space of five months (with the men’s ODI World Cup in early 2023)? That World Cup is, as of now, the only ICC event scheduled in 2023 so potentially that could be pushed to October-November later that year.

One of the most exciting projects in the Premier League at the moment is that of Wolves. Gary O’Neil’s side have been one of the surprise packages in the competition this season, having been tipped by many to get relegated at the start of the campaign.
However, they are currently in 12th, on 46 points, but are just three points behind ninth place West Ham United. In 36 matches so far this season, Wolves have won 13, drawn seven, and lost 16.
O’Neil has turned them into a very tricky side to come up against. At Molineux, they have won eight of their 18 matches, whilst away from home, they have won five times, according to Understat.
They also have some deadly players in transition, who O’Neil has certainly got the best out of. Namely, they are Hwang Hee-chan, who has 12 goals and three assists in the Premier League, Pedro Neto who has scored twice and has nine assists, and Matheus Cunha who has a superb 11 goals and seven assists in the top flight.

No doubt, Wolves are one of the deadliest sides in transition, with Cunha and Neto wonderful ball carriers and superb creators, whilst Hwang has superb instinct in the penalty area and is clinical in front of goal.
However, Wolves did previously have another excellent transitional player on their books, who they let go of last season.
Morgan Gibbs-White's season in numbers
The player in question here is Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White. The 24-year-old joined Forest for £42.5m in the summer of 2022, and is a key player at the club, under former Steve Cooper and current manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
It is fair to say there is no love lost between Gibbs-White and the fans of his former side. In a Carabao Cup tie last season, he scored a penalty in a shootout which he celebrated by putting his fingers in his ears right in front of the Wolves fans. This season, he antagonised them further, by repeating his celebration and kissing the Forest badge.
Ironically, Gibbs-White could have been superb under O’Neil, had he stayed at Wolves last season. He has been Forest’s best player this season, having scored five goals and registering eight assists.
Not only that, he has created the most chances, with 15, averages the most key passes per 90 minutes, with two, and completes the third most dribbles per 90 minutes, with 1.2, as per Sofascore.

Gibbs-White’s superb carrying ability would have been excellent for Wolves in 2023/24, potentially slotting in perfectly into this current Wolves side, helping them move further up the table.
With that being said, he made his decision to leave in the summer of 2022, before O’Neil’s tenure. Whilst he would have been excellent under the Englishman, they may have someone else coming through into the first team who could be just as good as Gibbs-White.
Luke Cundle's season in numbers
Wolves midfielder Luke Cundle is currently on loan at Stoke City, as well as being at Plymouth Argyle in the first half of the season. He is an exciting academy product who could well break into Gary O’Neil’s first team next season.
He has five goals and seven assists in the Championship this season for both clubs and has certainly impressed on loan so far.
In one particular game for Stoke, a 4-0 victory over Bristol City, Cundle was given a 9/10 rating by Stoke On Trent Live journalist Peter Smith. He explained the Wolves man played with “energy, skill and commitment”, with his “one-touch play and movement” being “integral” to the way the Potters played.
Indeed, Cundle is a very creative force, this season averaging 1.88 key passes per 90 minutes, as per Fbref, which ranks him in the top 10%. This is just slightly less than Gibbs-White’s two key passes per 90 minutes.

The youngster is highly thought about, with his former manager Rusell Martin at Swansea, a club he was previously on loan at, explaining that he is “a player to be excited about, he is technically gifted, and intelligent."
There is no doubt that, in Cundle, Wolves have an exciting attacking midfielder coming through. He has already played four times in the Premier League, and after a successful 2023/24 season in the Championship – a division Gibbs-White thrived in prior to his Forest move with 12 goals and ten assists for Sheffield United – he could well get another shot in the top flight next season.

With the summer transfer window fast approaching and bringing with it a new era at Liverpool, the Reds are reportedly in pole position to get one over on Premier League rivals Manchester United and sign an eventual replacement for Virgil van Dijk.

It's smart thinking by Michael Edwards to plan for the long-term and the eventual absence of Van Dijk. The Dutchman won't be an easy man to replace, whether that be replacing his leadership, stature or pure ability, but the defender himself confirmed that he isn't looking to leave Merseyside any time soon.
That said, at 32 years old, Van Dijk won't go on forever at the top of his game and the best case scenario for Liverpool would be to have a ready-made replacement lined up for when their captain does call time on an excellent spell at Anfield. And that's where Gonaclo Inacio could come in.

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool are now in pole position to sign Inacio from Sporting CP this season in a deal worth €60m (£52m) this summer. Despite competition from Manchester United and Newcastle United, it is Liverpool "in particular" who are expected to press ahead with negotiations.
The deal wouldn't be without its irony either, given that the Reds would be significantly weakening Ruben Amorim's Sporting side after very nearly landing the manager to replace Klopp. In the end, however, they turned their attention to Arne Slot, who could now become the next manager to benefit from Inacio's potential and current defensive prowess.

There are not many defenders in world football who could replace Van Dijk at Liverpool, but Inacio is one of the rare few. The 22-year-old has won a lot of fans in Portugal and that's no shock given the numbers that he consistently produces to leave him up there with the very best that Europe has to offer.

What's more, if Liverpool can land their Van Dijk heir for just over £50m, then it should be seen as one of, if not the bargain of the summer to get Slot's era started with a bang. Described as an "excellent central defender" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, Inacio looks destined for the top, whether that comes through a move to Liverpool or elsewhere.

Eighty-five percent of ticket-holders for this summer’s rescheduled Test against West Indies at The Kia Oval have opted to roll their tickets over to next year’s visit of India, rather than accept a full refund, according to figures released by Surrey on the day that the original fixture had been due to get underway.The news is a vote of confidence for the enduring popularity of Test cricket, given the prospect of all six of this summer’s fixtures against West Indies and Pakistan being played behind closed doors in “bio-secure” venues.The Oval Test, the first of the 2020 season, would originally have involved West Indies playing at the venue for the first time since 2004. However, the ECB announced on Tuesday that that fixture will now begin on July 8 at the Ageas Bowl, with Emirates Old Trafford hosting the subsequent two fixtures of the series, on July 16 and 24 respectively.It means that Surrey will now miss out on hosting an England Test for the first summer since the second World War, having staged an unofficial Test against a Rest of the World XI in 1970 when that year’s tour by South Africa was cancelled for political reasons.Surrey informed their ticket-holders of the news on Monday, June 1, and offered them the opportunity to either claim a full refund or move their tickets to the India visit in 2021, retaining the same seats for the same day of play. The first four days of the series had been sold out, and currently, only 15% have fans have opted for their money back.Charlie Hodgson, Managing Director of the Kia Oval, said: “The interest in next year’s India Test Match is a real testament to the passion and loyalty of cricket fans in this country.”Whilst it’s incredibly disappointing for everyone that the Test match summer is not beginning today at the Kia Oval, there are currently bigger things we all need to work together to achieve.”The clear desire shown by fans to attend next year’s Test represents a massive vote of confidence in English cricket and the Kia Oval and our continued ability to host sold out Test matches that provide a full day of world class sport in a unique and special environment.”Ticketholders have until the end of the month to request their refund, which they can activate by filling in a form on the Club’s website. There will be a second opportunity for refunds when the dates of next year’s match, which will revert to The Oval’s traditional end-of-summer slot, are confirmed by the ECB.The Oval is also due to host a one-day international against Ireland on September 15, although details for that game remain subject to ratification by the ECB.

Jofra Archer has been cleared to play in the final Test of the series against West Indies despite breaching biosecurity protocols after the first Test.Archer was dropped from the squad for the second Test in Manchester after it emerged he had made an unauthorised visit to his home in Brighton after leaving Southampton. Ashley Giles, the managing director of England men’s cricket said the breach “could have been a disaster” which cost English cricket “tens of millions of pounds”.But a disciplinary hearing chaired by Giles ended with Archer being given a fine – which is understood to be around £15,000, the value of his match fee for the second Test – and an official written warning.ALSO READ: Ben Stokes calls on England to rally round Jofra ArcherThe relatively lenient penalty reflects Archer’s previous good record, his remorse and an acceptance his actions were foolish rather than a wilful breach of protocol. The hearing was also attended remotely by Archer’s agent, Tom Harwood, a representative from the Professional Cricketers’ Association, and John Carr, the director of England Cricket Operations at the ECB.Archer has been obliged to isolate in his hotel room at Emirates Old Trafford since the details of his trip came to light. He has already undergone one Covid-19 Test – which was negative – and will undergo another on Monday. If that, too, is negative, he will be reintegrated to the squad on Tuesday. The individual whom he saw in Brighton has also tested negative for the virus since the incident. ESPNcricinfo understands that individual was not Archer’s neighbour and Sussex teammate, Chris Jordan.The England squad have been keen to rally round Archer in recent days. While he has not had any face-to-face contact, they have kept in touch by WhatsApp in the evenings – the players are not allowed access to their phones during the day in accordance with anti-corruption protocols – and several of the team have played computer games with him.The team management is understood to be looking at the possibility of Archer exercising on the outfield at Emirates Old Trafford after the close of play to ensure he is able to retain his fitness.
