Mumbai taking a cautious approach with allrounder’s back after last year’s surgery

Mumbai Indians are keen to get some overs out of their key allrounder Hardik Pandya but are taking a cautious approach with him after his back surgery last year. Zaheer Khan, Mumbai’s director of cricket operations, said on Sunday that Pandya is “very keen and really wanting to bowl,” but they also have to “listen to his body”.Pandya has not bowled so far in Mumbai’s two games – against the Chennai Super Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders – and Khan didn’t specify when exactly the allrounder could be expected to bowl next.”We’re all expecting him to bowl and he’s someone who really changes the balance of any side when he’s bowling and understands that but we have to listen to his body and that’s a conversation we’ve been having in consultation with the physios,” Khan said while answering questions from the press.”We’re looking forward for him to bowl, he’s very keen and really wanting to bowl. We just have to wait and be patient and listen to his body. At the end of the day, any bowler’s injury plays a huge role. We’re happy he’s there as a batter and with full fitness contribution, so that’s the exciting part. Hopefully you’ll see him bowl soon.”Pandya underwent a back surgery in October last year in the UK after his lower back had been troubling him since the Test series in England in 2018. The surgery kept Pandya out of action for almost a year, last playing a T20I against South Africa at home in September 2019. After that he missed the Tests against the same opposition, the home series against Bangladesh and West Indies, a T20I series against Sri Lanka and ODIs against Australia at home, and the entire tour of New Zealand earlier this year.Pandya was a crucial player for Mumbai last IPL with both bat and ball: his strike rate of 191.42 for the 402 runs he scored in 15 innings and the 14 wickets he took in 42.3 overs helped his team lift a record fourth title. He plays the role of a key fifth or sixth bowler – interchangeably with his brother Krunal Pandya – which Mumbai used in the form of Kieron Pollard in their last game, against the Knight Riders earlier this week. It was a rare sight because Pollard last bowled in the IPL more than three years ago, in April 2017. Against the Super Kings in the first game, Mumbai used their regulation five bowlers while defending 162 and lost by five wickets.Speaking of Pandya’s bowling, Mumbai coach Mahela Jayawardene told host broadcaster Star Sports during the game against the Knight Riders that they would “gradually build him up”.”[It’s a] day-by-day progress, we don’t want to take a risk,” Jayawardene said on September 23. “He came back from operation. He looks healthy now so we’ll gradually build him up. We’ll see when he’s comfortable and then take a call.”
After making an offer to sign Max Kilman from Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United have now reportedly enquired about a potential deal to sign another Premier League star for Julen Lopetegui.
West Ham transfer news
Into a new chapter under Lopetegui, West Ham have already welcomed their first signing of the summer, having announced the arrival of young Brazilian winger Luis Guilherme earlier this month. The 18-year-old completed a deal worth a reported £26m to become the Hammers' first signing under Lopetegui this summer.
After putting pen to paper on the deal, Guilherme told the club's official website: “I’m very happy to be signing with West Ham United, a Club that trusted in my work. I also want to thank everyone at West Ham, particularly Tim and his team who came to Brazil, and not only talked with me, but also with my family.
“They presented the project, and both my family and I liked it. So, I'm very happy to be signing with this Club and hope to contribute as much as possible. If things go well, we have a beautiful journey ahead."
West Ham hold talks to sign £30m striker ahead of Chelsea
More attacking additions are wanted at the London Stadium.

West Ham's attention has since turned elsewhere. Wasting no time resting on their laurels, the Hammers have reportedly made contact to sign Kilman from Wolves this summer and have had a bid turned down, whilst also shifting their focus elsewhere in the Premier League.
Alongside Kilman, West Ham have made contact about signing Callum Wilson from Newcastle United, according to Lee Ryder. The Magpies reportedly value their striker at £18m as they look to cash in before his contract comes to an end next summer. Wilson, of course, knows West Ham forward Michail Antonio well, given that the duo host The Footballer's Football Podcast together, and could now link up with his co-host for the first time on the pitch.
"Huge" Wilson can replace Antonio
Whilst they're good friends off the pitch, Wilson and Antonio's relationship could be in for an awkward test if the Newcastle man completes a move to the London Stadium to potentially take the latter's place in Lopetegui's side this summer.
With Wilson's role left in doubt at Newcastle following their links with signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin, his move will likely centre around game-time no matter who he has to leapfrog to get it, including Antonio.

Remaining clinical even as he has struggled for fitness over the years, it's no surprise that Eddie Howe has been full of praise for Wilson, previously hailing him as a "huge player" for Newcastle: "He has to lead the press and the one we bounce off initially. He kept going right until the end and his goalscoring record is excellent. I'm delighted for him, he's a huge player for us and a big presence in the dressing room."

Captain endures nerve-wracking final day as county claims yet another first-class trophy
Andrew Miller27-Sep-2020
Tom Westley lifts the Bob Willis Trophy•Getty Images
It may not be a test of endurance to rival the traditional County Championship, but Tom Westley, Essex’s captain, was adamant that his side’s claiming of the inaugural Bob Willis Trophy at Lord’s represented a “massive” achievement for the club, and one which underpinned an era in which they have risen from a period of “mediocrity” in the early 2000s to become the very best red-ball team in the country.By closing out for a draw on the final day against Somerset, Essex secured their fourth first-class trophy in five seasons, following their promotion from Division Two as champions in 2016, and two County Championship titles in 2017 and 2019.And though the necessarily low-key celebrations at the end of the contest belied the scale of their latest achievement, Westley insisted that they would treasure the trophy every bit as much as their previous successes, and find a way to do social justice to the achievement as well, in spite of the Covid-19 restrictions currently in place in the UK which limit gatherings to groups of six.”It’s massive,” Westley said after the trophy presentation at Lord’s. “It may be a one-off trophy, but we were just thinking how special it would be to be the only club in history, potentially, to win the Bob Willis Trophy and play a five-day final at Lord’s.”Any game of cricket that we play means an awful lot to the club, means an awful lot to the group of lads up in that changing room,” he added. “It’s right up there for me, with the Division One title and the T20 [Blast] last year, definitely.”For Westley, personally, the achievement had extra significance given that he not only took over the captaincy from Ryan ten Doeschate at the end of last season’s Championship triumph, but that he spent the early part of the year wondering if he and his players would even set foot on a cricket field this summer. The squad was furloughed in the early part of the year, in keeping with most county teams, and Westley’s major role as skipper in those months proved to be a pastoral one, checking in on his players and making sure they were coping with the invidious circumstances.”It’s polar opposites,” he said. “From a captaincy side of things, especially during lockdown, it just about getting around the guys as frequently as you can, looking out for their wellbeing and making sure they were in a good space, to now actually having played a tournament and winning is the other end of the spectrum.”With 172 runs at 19.11 in the six matches, Westley’s contributions have fallen short of his more recent Championship standards. But having chipped in with a crucial 51 in partnership with Alastair Cook in the first innings – a performance that went a long way to securing a decisive first-innings lead – he came good when it mattered, even if his second-innings duck on the final day caused him a tense afternoon in the dressing-room.”For my first year as captain, it’s been immensely nerve-wracking,” he said. “And a bit frustrating at times because I haven’t played as well as I’d have liked. But it’s just a wonderful feeling now to sit here, having won the Bob Willis Trophy. To be 2019 champions and then to win the Bob Willis Trophy speaks for itself, so I’m immensely proud of the boys, and immensely proud of Essex.”Internally, it’s been a bit of a train-wreck all day,” he added. “But to be fair, the boys were incredibly calm. They’ve got an unbelievable amount of confidence, based on the success we’ve had in the last few years, and they were pretty chilled. But having become captain, I can sympathise with Tendo now, knowing how nerve-wracking it is when it’s out of your control but all you want is the best for the guys.”The Bob Willis Trophy itself may be a one-off, but the three-tier format could be here to say, given the changes to the Championship that the ECB is considering for 2021 onwards. Westley insisted he was not against the changes per se, especially given that the two most consistent red-ball teams in the country had made it to the final, but hoped for a bit of meritocracy going forward, to do justice to the very journey that his own county has been on in recent years.ALSO READ: As it happened – Essex claim Bob Willis Trophy after final-day draw at Lord’s”It is fitting that the best two red-ball teams over the last few years have played in this final,” he said. “I’m not against the three-tier system, I think it’s proved it’s worked well … but the top sides should be in the top division, because that’s why we play the game.”I can remember the start of my career at Essex. We played a lot of cricket in Division Two and we had aspirations to get to Division One, and we’ve had that success in the last few years.”Westley said that Essex’s triumph was a tribute to a number of senior players, not least Cook and Simon Harmer, whom he acknowledged as “world class” after another stellar haul of 38 wickets at 15.28 in the campaign. But he paid particular tribute to the head coach, Anthony McGrath, and his predecessor as captain, ten Doeschate, for their roles in transforming the club’s self-image after years of being seen as one of the smaller counties on the circuit.”We’ve got a very settled side and a formula of winning at Chelmsford, so it was extra pleasing to go to a neutral venue and still come out on top,” he said. “But having been at Essex for a number of years now – and not to take away any credit from previous coaches – Mags has been able to galvanise this side like I’ve never seen Essex through previous years.”I would attribute a lot of success to him, and the way that Tendo took over the captaincy was a culture shift for us as a club.”We back our own, and that gives us confidence,” he said. “For a county that was fairly mediocre, if I’m being honest, in Division Two for a number of years, to then to create that belief that we could be the best team, a large portion of credit should go to those guys mentioned.”As for Essex’s post-match plans, however, Westley was understandably coy.”Essex being Essex, we’ll give it a good nudge and try somehow to have a few beers,” he said. “Socially distanced, I probably have to say, and see where the evening takes us in groups of six. But it’s one that we’re going to have to tiptoe around, I’m guessing is the correct answer!”

Robin Van Persie, Thierry Henry and Ian Wright are just three of the iconic forwards that have starred during their respective spells with Arsenal, all becoming fan-favourites during their time with the Gunners.
However in 2024, despite the emergence of talents such as Bukayo Saka, the club are desperately lacking that focal point at the top end of the pitch that can catapult Mikel Arteta’s side to the Premier League title.
His side came within touching distance of success last season, finishing just two points behind eventual champions Manchester City, despite having the best defensive record in the division.
Erling Haaland undoubtedly proved to be the difference in the title race, with his 27 league goals leading the blue half of Manchester to a fourth league triumph in the last five years.
He's like Haaland: Arsenal want £42m star who outscored Havertz & Jesus
The goal-scoring “sensation” could fire the Gunners to the Premier League title.
ByJack Salveson Holmes Jun 17, 2024
Arsenal’s top scorer was the aforementioned Saka who managed to find the net on 16 occasions, with Arteta crying out for the one striker who can deliver 20+ to boost their efforts of ending the 20-year drought without a league title in North London.
The club have constantly been linked with numerous forwards, but they appear to have narrowed it down to one target after missing out on RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.
Arsenal prepare bid for talented striker
According to Area Napoli, Arsenal are preparing a bid to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen this summer to try and combat their lack of presence in the central forward role.
The 25-year-old, who has a £102m release clause, could be set to depart the Italian side this summer, with interest from Arteta’s side as well as French outfit PSG.
However, it’s thought Osimhen would cost no way near his exit clause, with Napoli looking to offload the forward. The striker, who scored 15 goals in Serie A last season, allegedly wants a move to the Premier League.
He would certainly provide a presence that Arsenal have been missing and prove to be an upgrade on one player who is currently a part of the Gunners’ squad.
Why Osimhen would be an upgrade on Gabriel Jesus
Current Gunners' striker Gabriel Jesus has struggled with injuries at the Emirates in recent months, missing 16 games in the 2023/24 campaign with various knee and hamstring problems.
He still managed to score four goals in the Premier League, but he was unable to get anywhere near Osimhen’s tally, who found the net on 15 occasions in two fewer outings.
The Nigerian has averaged 0.7 goals per 90 over the last 12 months – a figure that is nearly four times higher than the Brazilian who lacks the clinical nature needed by a striker under Arteta.

He’s also managed more shots per 90, putting 42% of his efforts on target – giving Arsenal the added threat they desire and proving to be a more clinical alternative to the former Manchester City attacker.
Arsenal have also enjoyed success with crosses and set pieces, with Arteta’s side averaging 4.6 crosses per 90, at a success rate of just 26%, with Osimhen’s tally of 44% aerial duels won adding the threat in the air the Gunners have been crying out for in the attacking third.
dusan-vlahovic-victor-osimhen-arsenal-opinion
Although he would be a hefty investment, the Nigerian "monster" as described by analyst Raj Chohan, would provide a different dimension at the top end of the pitch, with his qualities dramatically improving Arsenal’s already potent attack.
He would prove to be a huge upgrade on Jesus, as backed up by the table above. Would it be worth spending as much as they did on Declan Rice? With Osimhen having the ability to hugely bolster Arsenal’s chances of ending their drought without a Premier League title, of course it would.
What Arsenal’s starting XI could look like after £300m spending spree
Arsenal could have a massive summer ahead of them if they are to finally overtake Manchester City.

Marnus Labuschagne bagged a duck while Matt Renshaw approached a hundred

Usman Khawaja set up Queensland with a century•Getty Images
A batsman who looks increasingly under pressure for his Test place made a low score, one who is among the most prolific players in the world bagged a duck and two former Test batsmen filled their boots on the opening day at Glenelg.Usman Khawaja probably won’t come into consideration for Australia’s Test squad, and Matt Renshaw certainly won’t, but the former made his first century since February 2019 and the latter closed within touching distance of his first for two-and-a-half years.Joe Burns’ hold on the Test opening berth appears more tenuous by the day – across town Will Pucovski piled up another big hundred – as he fell for 10 in the sixth over, given caught behind via an inside edge although he did not seem thrilled by the decision.Marnus Labuschagne then bagged his second consecutive duck, walking into a wide delivery and edging to slip, to leave Queensland 2 for 11. Khawaja and Bryce Street added 128 for the third wicket followed by a 103-run partnership between Khawaja and Renshaw, before the day was capped by a boundary-studded half-century from Jimmy Peirson.Khawaja was the aggressor in Queensland’s early recovery as Street took 107 balls to reach double figures. Street had started to make progress when he fell to a stunning short leg catch by Henry Hunt who parried the ball up then held the rebound. That gave Lloyd Pope his lone success of the day but it was another tough outing for the legspinner who conceded a run-a-ball. Khawaja, especially, enjoyed his regular loose offerings while Renshaw did not miss out on many.Khawaja’s previous century had been his Test hundred against Sri Lanka in Canberra and he reached three figures off 149 balls against the first delivery of the evening session. He eventually fell to the deserving Wes Agar, edging to Callum Ferguson at first slip in his last first-class match, but Queensland rattled along in the final session which brought 159 runs in 38 overs.Peirson was largely responsible for that, hitting 48 off his 60 runs in boundaries, and the stand with Renshaw was unbroken on 89 on another tough day for the South Australia attack.
