While their campaign didn't get off to the best of starts on Monday night, Tottenham Hotspur have a massive season ahead of them in the Premier League this year.
Ange Postecoglou is no longer the new guy, and there is an expectation that after a busy summer in which the club have spent well over £100m on new players, he'll lead them back into the Champions League.
However, while Daniel Levy and Co have already splashed the cash this year, recent reports have touted even more players for a move to N17, including one who's won comparisons to Manchester United new boy Matthijs de Ligt, although he could spell trouble for Destiny Udogie.
Tottenham Hotspur transfer news
According to a recent report from Spain, Tottenham are one of several clubs interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.
Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.
The report claims that, alongside the Lilywhites, Liverpool and Atlético Madrid are incredibly keen to land the versatile 22-year-old this summer, meaning a bidding war could soon erupt.
The story does not mention a potential price, but separate reports from earlier this month revealed that a fee of around £50m could tempt the German champions into selling.
piero-hincapie
It would be a complicated and costly transfer to get done, but given Hincapie's form last season, positional versatility, and comparisons to De Ligt, it is one well worth making, although Udogie might not welcome it.
How Hincapie compares to De Ligt and why he could challenge Udogie
Okay, so before we look at how Hincapie could compete with Udogie for a place in the starting lineup at Spurs, let's examine this comparison to De Ligt and where it comes from.
Piero-Hincapie-Liverpool-target
It primarily stems from FBref, which compared all centre-backs in the Bundesliga last season, created a list of the ten most similar players for each one, and concluded that the Dutchman was the fifth most similar centre-back to the Leverkusen ace in the league.
You can see their similarities in how closely they rank for specific underlying metrics, including but not limited to non-penalty expected goals plus assists, progressive passes, shots on target, passing accuracy and ball recoveries, all per 90.

So, it's clear then from his comparison to United's new defensive stalwart that, as a centre-back, the "tenacious" 22-year-old star, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is immensely gifted, but that is not the reason he's going to threaten Udogie's place in the team, the reason he could do that is the fact that he's an accomplished full-back as well.
Throughout his career, he has started 89 games at centre-back, 39 at left-back, and another 12 in left midfield, which should help him feel more at home attacking from the full-back position.
It's not just at club level where the "future legend", as dubbed by Kulig, has played there either, as he started there for all four of Ecuador's games at the Copa América this year and even picked up a freak assist in the team's 3-1 win over Jamaica in the group stage.
It's this quality experience at playing at left-back that could see the Esmeraldas-born gem really challenge the Lilywhites' talented Italian prospect because, as things stand, he doesn't have any genuine competition in the squad, which isn't ideal for fostering a competitive spirit within the team.
Tottenham full-back Destiny Udogie.
Ultimately, Udogie proved that he's one of the most exciting young full-backs in the Premier League last season, but players need competition to thrive, and based on his performances over the last few years, Hincapie could be that competition – the comparison to De Ligt is just a nice bonus.

When people suggest there are too many first-class counties, Derbyshire tend to be one of those they highlight. And, much as some of us might want to refute that, you can see why. They’ve only had two seasons in the top division of the County Championship – 2000 and 2013 – and the last time one of their players was selected to play for England was in 2002. Yes, Gary Ballance and Ian Blackwell played for Derbyshire and England. But the last serving Derbyshire player to win England selection was Dominic Cork. And if you’re not challenging for trophies or producing many quality players, well, what’s the point?Related

They don’t have a great record against Warwickshire, either. They haven’t beaten them in a first-class game since 1993 and have only played them three times in the last decade. So, this is a big year for Derbyshire. They are, in some senses, exactly the sort of team this new Championship structure was designed to encourage. After years of slipping dangerously close to irrelevance, they have a chance to show that, with a bit of extra incentive, they can mix it with the best. And, in sharing a group with Essex, they really are in with the best.It didn’t start well. After little more than half an hour, they were 7 for 3 with three of their top four having been dismissed for ducks. You would expect any surface at this time of year to provide some assistance to seamers, but there was nothing outlandish on show here. Indeed, this seems to be a better pitch than anyone had any right to expect after the relentlessly cold weather in recent days. After the immaculate Oliver Hannon-Dalby – whose first seven-over spell cost just three runs – returned to surprise Wayne Madsen with a bit of extra bounce, Derbyshire were 40 for 5.Luis Reece and Matt Critchley provided some resistance in adding 93 for the fifth-wicket. While Reece’s innings was, for the most part, a dogged affair – not that there’s anything wrong with that – Critchley batted with a fluency and elegance that nobody could match on the day. At one stage, he took Craig Miles for four successive boundaries – three of them gorgeous drives – and reached his fifty in just 58 balls.Although neither could strictly be said to have come through the Derbyshire system – Lancashire played a more significant role in the development of both players – they are the sort of players around whom the club could mount a decent campaign this summer. But neither of them progressed much beyond 60. And with nobody else in the team reaching 15, it left Derbyshire without a batting bonus point and as much as 100 runs short of a par score. It was, in short, an underwhelming start to their challenge. To be fair to Derbyshire, they were unfortunate to run into Liam Norwell in top form. Some of Warwickshire’s coaches believe he is the second quickest bowler on their staff, after Olly Stone, and here he generated surprisingly sharp pace while maintaining a probing line and length. He claimed two wickets in his first over – Billy Godleman forced into playing at one and Anuj Dal missing a straight one – and returned later returned to break the Reece-Critchley stand.Going round the wicket, he brought an edge from the left-handed Reece with another that forced a stroke and bounced a little, before Critchley pushed at one outside off. In between times, Harvey Hosein appeared to be hurried by one that bounced more than anticipated and was also caught in the cordon. It was the 12th five-wicket haul of Norwell’s first-class career and his second in six games since joining Warwickshire in 2019. Warwickshire’s catching was excellent despite the chilly conditions.Norwell admitted he had been nervous before play. While there’s little doubting his ability, he had struggled with injury in recent years – this is just his seventh first-class game since the start of 2018 – and he knows that, aged 29, he is running out of opportunities to show what he can do. This game came exactly 10 years since his first-class debut; a game in which he claimed 6 for 46 against Derbyshire. But he was preferred to Henry Brookes in this match and is rated by Warwickshire’s director of cricket, Paul Farbrace, as a key reason the club avoided relegation in 2019.”I just want to repay the faith Warwickshire have shown in me,” Norwell said. “I’ve had a pretty right time of things over the last few years; this is the first time I’ve been fit for the start of the season since 2017.”The coach [Mark Robinson] has given me confidence and told me to relax. He’s told us to enjoy it and tried to instil some belief. I’m not looking too far ahead: I just want to stay fit and put in some good performances to repay that faith.”While Will Rhodes, leaving a straight one, fell early in reply, there was good news for Warwickshire off the pitch, too. Their replacement overseas player, Hanuma Vihari, arrived in the country around lunchtime and will now quarantine in Birmingham in the hope of being available for next week’s game against Nottinghamshire. Warwickshire also expect Stone, who missed this game as part of his planned workload management ahead of the Test series against New Zealand, to play next week. They hope he will play four Championship matches before that Test series. Ryan Sidebottom is currently coming back from injury but is expected to play club cricket this weekend. While Vihari is, for now, planning on playing no more than three games, he is expected to be available for more. Indeed, with little sign of progress in Pieter Malan’s attempts to obtain a visa, there has to be a chance that Vihari will play until he is required by India.

Nottingham Forest’s pursuit of Santiago Gimenez looks to be all but over after journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed he rejected the Reds’ latest proposal.
It was reported that the club’s representatives travelled to the Netherlands to try and convince the Mexican to move to the Premier League, but to no avail with the club needing to target other options.
Nuno Espírito Santo’s side made three separate offers for the 23-year-old, emerging as the club’s top target after Eddie Nketiah’s move also collapsed.
However, the latest bid, which totalled €33m (£28m) including add-ons, evidently wasn’t enough, with the Reds having two days to find an alternative option.
They could move for one player, with the club making progress in an attempt to sign the centre-forward.
Nottingham Forest in talks to sign £20m talent
According to The Telegraph, Nottingham Forest are in talks to sign Eintracht Frankfurt’s talisman Omar Marmoush before Friday’s transfer deadline.
The Egyptian forward, who could be available for £20m, registered 12 goals and six assists in his 29 Bundesliga matches last season – providing the added goal threat to the Reds’ attack.
The 25-year-old can also play as a winger or even an attacking midfielder, offering versatility across the frontline which Nuno has been craving this summer.
After missing out on Gimenez, it’s undoubtedly going to be a disappointment for the club, but Marmoush would offer an excellent alternative, potentially being the Reds’ own version of a top European talent.
Why Marmoush could be Forest’s own Gyokeres
Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres has emerged as one of the leading strikers in European football after his stellar campaign in Portugal during the 2023/24 campaign.
Viktor Gyokeres in action for Sporting
The Swedish international registered 39 goal contributions in his 33 Liga Portugal appearances last term, helping the club win the division under Ruben Amorim.
Gyokeres, who previously played for Coventry City, currently has a €100m (£86m) release clause in his contract in Portugal, undoubtedly ruling Forest out of any possible move amid their hunt for a new talisman.
However, their move for Marmoush could allow them to sign a similar talent to the goal machine, with FBref ranking the pair as similar players based on their respective figures from last season.
The “superb” Egyptian, as dubbed by journalist Bence Bocsak, may have registered half the amount of goals and assists but averaged more progressive passes and the same pass accuracy – demonstrating his ability to retain possession.

He also only managed slightly fewer shots and shots on target than the Swede, potentially able to replicate Gyokeres’ numbers with service from the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White behind him.
With the clock ticking for the Reds to get a deal done for a new centre-forward, they will have to act quickly if they are to secure any new additions to help catapult the club further away from the relegation zone.
Omar Marmoush for Frankfurt.
Marmoush would be an excellent addition, with his talents in possession and in front of goal hugely improving the options currently at Nuno’s disposal.
The £20m fee would allow for a cheaper alternative to Gimenez, but as showcased with his figures, could still have just as much of an impact, with the 25-year-old having the ability to thrive in England’s top-flight.

Campaigners achieve aim of gender equality with commitment to T20 double-header

The women’s Varsity match looks certain to be played on the main square at Lord’s for the first time following pressure on Marylebone Cricket Club and the universities’ cricket clubs. While the men’s Varsity match has, in one form or another, been played at Lord’s for almost 200 years, the women’s match has never progressed beyond the Nursery ground. From 2022, however, all that is set to change. After a campaign launched by former Oxford captain, Vanessa Picker, MCC and the cricket clubs of both Oxford and Cambridge universities have committed to ensuring gender parity in future Varsity fixtures. That means that, from next year, the matches will be scheduled as a T20 double-header on the same day at Lord’s.The news represents a significant victory for Picker and the Stump Out Sexism (SOS) campaign she co-founded.A statement released by Cambridge University Cricket Club (CUCC) said: “CUCC is pleased that MCC has publicly agreed to host both women’s and men’s Varsity matches on the main square at Lord’s in 2022. CUCC confirms that it will in future ensure that both teams have equal opportunities at Lord’s, and will deliver specific proposals for the format of next year’s Varsity day (in liaison with OUCC and MCC) by the end of September.”Claire Taylor, the former England batter and current vice-chair of Oxford University Cricket Club, also welcomed the news.”It has always been our intention to explore the possibility of a double header at Lord’s, but it was a question of when; ensuring that any change in format would be sustainable,” Taylor said. “Playing a men’s and women’s double-header on the main ground at Lord’s in 2022 will be an exciting prospect for all involved and a real opportunity to celebrate varsity cricket. We thank MCC for the opportunity.”Related

Lord's Varsity matches under scrutiny in gender equality row
Despite the suggestion from both cricket clubs that this is the outcome they had long sought, Picker had been lobbying for such an outcome for almost three years and had met with significant resistance. It was only when she involved MCC – and the media – that the university cricket clubs were persuaded that the pace of change had to be accelerated. It may well be that, behind closed doors, MCC made it clear that any future invitation to the universities was dependent upon them ensuring gender parity. While welcoming the development, SOS reiterated their belief that “there is a still a very long way to go”. They are planning a demonstration outside Lord’s this Saturday (May 22), when the men’s Varsity match (a 50-overs-a-side game) is scheduled to be played.”We are very pleased to see that both OUCC and CUCC have publicly committed to accepting the MCC’s offer of a gender-equal Varsity fixture in 2022,” the group said in a statement. “This is a symbolic first step towards Lord’s becoming as much the ‘Home of Cricket’ for women as it already is for men.”Nevertheless, there is still a very long way to go. It has taken over two years of sustained efforts, multiple denied requests from the university clubs, and ultimately attention from (notably male) journalists to reach this point. Throughout the process, we have realised just how deep these issues of inequality run within the cricketing world. We will, therefore, keep pushing for change.”We will also still be demonstrating outside Lord’s on Sunday to highlight the severe lack of women’s matches on the MCC’s 2021 fixture list, and to acknowledge the almost 200 years of exclusion of women from the Lord’s Varsity fixture.”This is a good start, and we are proud of what our campaign has achieved so far, but this is not the end. It is rather the beginning of something much bigger. Change is coming. Sexism can and will be stumped out.”
