Man Utd hit gold on elite Mourinho signing who’s worth more than Garnacho

Manchester United’s start to the 2024/25 Premier League campaign has been one to forget, with the club picking up just three points in their opening three fixtures.

It all appeared to be going to plan for Erik ten Hag’s side, beating Fulham 1-0 on the opening day, before back-to-back defeats against Brighton and Hove Albion and rivals Liverpool.

The Red Devils have been backed heavily during the off-season, spending just shy of £200m on new talent, but as of yet, they have been unable to change the club’s fortunes.

Leny Yoro is the only new addition yet to feature this season after suffering a foot injury just days after his £59m move to Old Trafford, which could see him miss up to three months of action.

However, Ten Hag will still be hoping that one talent who produced numerous moments of magic last season can recapture the form that saw him become a first-team regular in the North West.

Alejandro Garnacho’s 2023/24 campaign for Man Utd

After breaking into United’s first-team during the 2022/23, academy star Alejandro Garnacho enjoyed his best professional campaign to date last season – featuring in 50 games for Ten Hag’s side in all competitions.

The Argentinian youngster registered 15 goal contributions across the campaign, including a phenomenal bicycle kick in the league victory against Everton at Goodison Park.

He finished the Premier League campaign with the third most combined league goals and assists at United, with only Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund registering more contributions during the 2023/24 campaign.

Garnacho’s subsequent form saw him earn a place at the Copa América with Argentina, where the 20-year-old only made a singular appearance.

However, despite his form over the last 12 months, he’s valued lower than one star who’s been a consistent performer during a tricky period for United.

Diogo Dalot has emerged as one of United’s key players in recent months, featuring in 36 of the club’s 38 Premier League matches during the 2023/24 campaign.

The “elite” Portuguese full-back, as described by Statman Dave, has showcased his versatility, operating at both right and left-back in recent times – becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet for Ten Hag at the back.

The 25-year-old is entering his eighth season as a United player following his £19m move from Porto back in 2018 under Jose Mourinho, with his market value soaring as a result of his excellent displays at Old Trafford.

Dalot is now valued at £40m, as per Football Transfers, with his subsequent figure higher than that of attacking star Garnacho who’s still only valued at £35.7m despite his recent success in the club’s first-team.

Whilst defensively Ten Hag’s side hasn’t been good enough, Dalot can pride himself on his recent displays, winning the third most tackles per 90 of any player in the United squad last season.

In a time period where many of the club’s new additions have been a waste of money, the full-back has proven to be a rare success story, looking worth every penny of the transfer fee the club paid for him six years ago.

The club and fanbase will be hoping that he can continue to develop on the same trajectory, helping others around him to reach the high standards that he’s set as the club looks to turn around their below-par start to the new campaign.

Joe Root calls on England to find inner 'showman' as near-capacity crowds return

Captain hopes that fans can inspire team after criticism for negativity at Lord’s

Joe Root, England’s captain, hopes that the return of a near-capacity crowd for the second Test at Edgbaston can inspire his players to find their inner “showman”, and scotch suggestions that they are a negative team, in the wake of their final-day go-slow in the opening match at Lord’s.Root’s team has been embroiled in controversy since the emergence of historic offensive tweets from a number of squad members, most notably Ollie Robinson, who has been suspended by the ECB pending an investigation. And in the eyes of some of their critics, they missed an opportunity to get their fans back onside in the Lord’s Test, as they declined to take on a 273-run fourth-innings chase, and chose instead to block out for the draw. But Root, who confirmed that the team would once again stand for a “moment of unity” before the start of the second Test, hopes that the return of 17,000 fans a day at Edgbaston may provide an opportunity for a change of narrative – even in the absence of their most proven crowd-pleaser Ben Stokes, who has been at the heart of most of England’s most thrilling victories in recent times.”We’re all very aware we’re in the entertainment business,” Root said. “We all want to be part of those games, those special games that provide that entertainment. They’re the ones that you remember.”The ones that stick in my mind are the World Cup final, Headingley, Cape Town … the ones that go to the wire, they’re the ones you remember as a player, and want to have big contributions in. Of course if there are chances to go and win Test matches, we want to go and take them, if we feel like that’s a realistic possibility.”However, with an unproven batting line-up in this series – one that had made four ducks in the first innings at Lord’s – Root still believes that discretion was the better part of valour in the first Test, after Kane Williamson’s lunchtime declaration had left England needing 273 in a minimum of 75 overs. Dom Sibley led the rearguard with an unbeaten 60, spanning more than five hours, as England closed on 170 for 3.Dom Sibley dug in for the draw on a dour final day at Lord’s•AFP/Getty Images

“I’ve had some time to think about that,” Root said. “I look at the situation we found ourselves in and I still feel we made the right decision. We’ve turned up here with an opportunity to win the series, albeit it is not part of the Test championship, but it is a Test match and that means a hell of a lot to the players and the group.”We’re very keen to put in five days of strong cricket this week and win the series. If the opportunities arise, we’ll definitely look to be aggressive. I don’t want us to be considered a negative team who play a boring brand of cricket. We have some very exciting players who are capable of some wonderful passages of cricket and hopefully that will come to light this week.”Edgbaston has traditionally been a favoured venue for England players, with the crowd’s close proximity to the playing surface, and the habitually rowdy support from the Hollies Stand in particular. Australia’s victory in the Ashes opener in 2019 was only the second by a visiting side in the last 20 years, and Root said he was thrilled at the prospect of feeling that support again.”It will be great to have [that many] people in, enjoying the sport again in pretty much a full house,” he said. “We know Edgbaston in particular provides a wonderful atmosphere, you feel like there’s 12 players on the pitch and you’ve got that extra man.”We’re very aware how lucky we are and how well we’re supported. It’s something we’ve missed as a side and are very much looking forward to. We can’t wait to experience five good days of cricket along with everyone else in the crowd.”Every individual takes it in slightly differently,” he added. “For me, it’s the excitement of it… there’s a showman in everyone, if you like, you want to go out there and put on a show for everyone and it’s an opportunity to do that in your own way.Related

“We’ve all missed that interaction with the fans and the crowd. There’s certain bowlers – you look at Ben Stokes, Stuart Broad – they respond to that atmosphere in the ground in a really positive way. It could be a real boost for us and play into our hands.”Root also urged his young batter to park the anxieties that they showed in the Lord’s Test, and put their focus into the occasion of representing England in a Test match, rather than worry that, with Stokes and Jos Buttler likely to return for the India series, they are already playing for their places.”I see it as an opportunity to go out and score Test runs for their country and I hope they view it like that,” Root said. “They have an opportunity, but also a responsibility to play the situation in front of them to the best of their ability, and to try and eradicate any other thoughts, other than getting absorbed in that moment and get ready for that next ball.”That’s the mindset we want to create,” he added. “Guys come into this team and can seamlessly fit in and do their roles. Hopefully guys will feel like that tomorrow and take their chance. The lads are fully aware of that and are talented enough to make big contributions.”

Wolves sold "underrated" wonderkid in 2022, now he’s on par with Palmer

Wolves started the 2024/25 Premier League campaign slowly, losing two and drawing one of their opening three fixtures. However, the Old Gold had a tough start, facing both Arsenal and Chelsea in their first two games.

Gary O'Neil lost one of his most important players this summer, with Pedro Neto making the move to Chelsea for a fee of around £54m.

Neto made 24 appearances for Wolves last season in all competitions, scoring three goals, providing 11 assists, and totalling 1,729 minutes played.

It may well come to pass that they end up missing the electric winger. Do they miss Morgan Gibbs-White, though? He's certainly gone to a new level after leaving Molineux behind.

Morgan Gibbs-White at Wolves

Morgan Gibbs-White came through the Wolves academy, joining the club at eight years old. He played 17 games for the U21 side, scoring two goals and providing five assists, but it didn't take long for the English midfielder to break into senior football.

Morgan-gibbs-white-wolves

Making his first-team debut in 2017, Gibbs-White went on to make 88 appearances for Wolves, scoring three goals and providing one assist, but many of these minutes were from the bench, totalling 3,053 minutes.

Gibbs-White spent two spells out on loan, his first being with Swansea in 2020/21, but his most successful time came at Sheffield United in 2021/22, where he made 38 appearances for the Blades in all competitions, scoring 13 goals, and providing ten assists.

This successful stint for Sheffield United caused Nottingham Forest to make a move for the English midfielder, paying a £25m initial fee, with add-ons that take the deal to a total of £42.5m.

How Gibbs-White is playing at Forest

Since being sold by Bruno Lage to Forest, Gibbs-White has been a key man, making 83 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals and providing 18 assists, totalling 6,949 minutes played. He has already doubled his minutes played in fewer appearances for Forest than in his time at Wolves.

Labelled an "underrated playmaker" by Statman Dave, the 24-year-old has made an immense impact so far this season. Indeed, the English midfielder has created the most chances from open play in the Premier League (9), joint with Chelsea sensation Cole Palmer.

Stats taken from FBref

As you can see from the metrics so far this campaign, Gibbs-White is performing extremely close to Palmer's level, even bettering him in some metrics. The 24-year-old is averaging seven progressive passes per 90, more than Palmer's 6.90.

He is also averaging nearly double the successful take-ons of Palmer, with two per 90 minutes, compared to Palmer's 1.03. Gibbs-White has a more compact and durable body composition, where his ability to carry the ball with power and a long stride helps him to get away from his marker/defender. It's perhaps not a surprise, therefore, to see that the two are now teammates at international level.

Contrastingly, Palmer is more controlled with his movements, using body feints and agility to get away from his man and create separation, and he does this effectively, averaging more progressive carries than the former Wolves man despite their different carrying styles.

Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White

Wolves could have done with the creation of Gibbs-White this season, especially after losing Neto this summer, and it seems clear that selling him may well have been a mistake as he looks on track for his best season yet.

Derbyshire drop captain Billy Godleman after dire T20 run

Batter will be given opportunity to “recharge batteries” after scoring 47 runs in eight innings

Derbyshire have dropped their captain, Billy Godleman, from their T20 Blast side despite an injury crisis which has stripped the squad back to its bare bones.Godleman has captained in T20 since 2019, when Dominic Cork took over as their Blast coach, and led the side to their first-ever Finals Day that summer, but has suffered a chronic lack of form this season, with 47 runs in eight innings and a top score of 15. He shuffled down to No. 3 in the absence of Wayne Madsen, the club’s all-time leading run-scorer in T20 cricket who tore a hamstring in the opening game of the season but has struggled to make any impact.Cork confirmed on Wednesday that Matt Critchley, the legspinning allrounder, would take over the captaincy for the remainder of the T20 season and that Godleman had been left out of the squad to play Birmingham Bears at Edgbaston on Thursday. Godleman remains the club’s County Championship captain though has managed only 236 runs in 11 first-class innings this season, averaging 23.60.Related

Edgbaston pitch invasion mars Derbyshire win and raises post-Covid crowd concerns

“Now is the right time to pull him out of the cauldron,” Cork said. “It’s been a tough time for Billy. He hasn’t shirked any responsibility, but as a coach, it would be unfair to just keep letting him go on and on. I’ve spoken to him, and he will come out of the squad to recharge his batteries.”With Godleman left out, Derbyshire have only 11 first-team players confirmed to be fit and available for Thursday night’s game, with loanee Alex Thomson ineligible to play against his parent club, though Tom Wood and Anuj Dal will both take late fitness tests as they look to return from injury. Harry Came, the top-order batter, was signed on a three-year deal at the start of the Blast following Ben McDermott’s call-up to the Australia squad on the eve of the tournament, while Thomson and Conor McKerr have been brought in on loan from Warwickshire and Surrey respectively. The club confirmed last week that Madsen’s injury was more serious than first feared, keeping him out for a minimum of eight weeks and making him a doubt for Manchester Originals in the Hundred. Alex Hughes, Ben Aitchison, Dustin Melton, Nick Potts, Sam Conners and Nils Priestley have also been injured, along with Wood and Dal.”I understand the frustration, and I understand the criticism on social media, but Billy has been an integral part of this team for some time,” Cork added. “With nine injuries, it’s not easy, but we’ve just tried to get on with it.”Maybe if there had been players fit, this decision would have been made a little bit earlier, but without having those players available, you have to hope that a player with the pedigree of Billy pulls through. Unfortunately, it hasn’t, and I’ve had to make this decision.”Derbyshire have won only two of their first eight Blast games, and their chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals are minimal. “You need your senior players to be pushing these young lads and showing them the way, especially in T20 cricket,” Cork said.Elsewhere, Somerset’s club captain Tom Abell has torn a hamstring and has been ruled out for an indefinite period of time. Leicestershire have signed Abi Sakande, the former Sussex seamer, on a deal until the end of the season.

As well as Ballard: Le Bris must now drop 5/10 Sunderland gem

Regis Le Bris will be anticipating a response from his Sunderland troops today in what could be a fiery midday Championship contest against near neighbours Middlesbrough.

Michael Carrick’s men, much like the Black Cats, will harbour promotion hopes of their own, but have started this season slower than the hosts with only two league wins picked up from five.

Regis Le Bris for Lorient.

Whereas, Le Bris’ oufit have four victories next to their name so far and will be confident about challenging near the top all season long for a spot up to the Premier League, despite unexpectedly coming up short against Plymouth Argyle last time out in a 3-2 defeat.

Daniel Ballard might well found he’s out of the Sunderland lineup for today’s relatively local affair at the Stadium of Light, owing to the fact he did hobble off injured at Home Park at the end of the 90 minutes after a dire showing.

Ballard's performance vs Plymouth

While the suggestion is that Ballard will be fit to feature, it might well be time for Le Bris to change up his centre-back options anyway, as the former Arsenal youth product struggled in Devon.

Ballard would unfortunately start Sunderland’s downfall on their travels by accidentally scoring an own goal to give Wayne Rooney’s Pilgrims a lifeline back into the game at 1-1, before two further goals for the home side allowed Plymouth to make an unbelievable 3-2 win a reality.

The 24-year-old’s nightmarish afternoon didn’t end at the embarrassing own goal, however, with Ballard also giving away the penalty that allowed Ryan Hardie to level proceedings for his side by clumsily clattering into the striker, before Joe Edwards then bagged a last-gasp winner to pile on the misery.

He did win nine duels in the contest away from just being an unlucky presence but the damage had already been done, with Sunderland Echo journalist Phil Smith handing out a low 5/10 rating to Ballard in his post-match musings, stating that the 6 foot 2 defender will definitely feel ‘frustrated’ with his display.

Dom Ballard

Le Bris might gift Chris Mepham his debut in Ballard’s place, with the Black Cats snapping up the Welsh defender on loan late into the transfer window, whilst Eliezer Mayenda will also fear for his starting spot after a forgettable offering at Home Park from the young striker.

Mayenda's performance vs Plymouth

Mayenda did have two goals and two assists in the league next to his name going into this clash, but never really looked like scoring or creating an opening for a teammate versus Plymouth.

From his lacklustre 79 minutes on the pitch, the promising 19-year-old would only muster up a poor 18 touches of the ball, with the Plymouth defenders very rarely feeling threatened by the teenager when he powered forward.

Glancing at the table above, it was a quiet day at the office from the Sunderland number 12, to say the least, with Mayenda only managing four accurate passes when played into the contest.

In truth, the still-raw attacker was isolated for large patches of the game and did shine on occasion with one big chance missed, but Le Bris could well feel a tweak up top is necessary to get the better of Carrick’s Boro this lunchtime.

Mayenda would end up receiving the same 5/10 rating as Ballard by Smith, who labelled his time on the pitch as ‘relatively quiet.’

Wilson Isidor could be gifted his first start for his new club in the 19-year-old’s place, therefore, having been substituted on at Home Park.

Or, Nazariy Rusyn will be lucky and emerge out from the periphery under Le Bris to lead the line, having scored against Boro last campaign at the Riverside Stadium.

Whatever does happen later today, the alarm bells won’t be sounding just yet, as Sunderland strive to get back to winning ways after getting their first hiccup under their new French boss out of the way.
