Punjab Kings kept their playoff hopes well and truly alive by punishing Kolkata Knight Riders for their off-colour fielding effort. Mayank Agarwal made a quickfire 40 after an early reprieve, KL Rahul anchored the 166 chase with a 55-ball 67 and Shahrukh Khan made an unbeaten 22 in nine balls.The result ensured that Knight Riders did not break away from the mid-table pack, with only two points separating the four teams between fourth and seventh. It also confirmed Delhi Capitals’ spot in the playoffs as they can no longer finish below fourth.That the Kings had to overcome only a par total of 165 on a batting-friendly surface was courtesy their death-overs bowling from Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh. After Venkatesh Iyer fell for a 49-ball 67 in the 15th over, Knight Riders could make only 45 runs in 5.2 overs, finishing well short of a total near 180 that they were on course to achieve. Kings seamers pull things back after Bishnoi burst
After being asked to bat, a 72-run partnership for the second wicket between Iyer and Rahul Tripathi helped the Knight Riders recover from the early Shubman Gill wicket.The Iyer-Tripathi combo hit 12 fours and two sixes. They took a particular liking to Fabian Allen’s left-arm spin and Nathan Ellis’ assortment of change-ups. Iyer’s power-hitting and Tripathi’s shots over midwicket and point kept Knight Riders’ run rate around eight per over up while they were around.But it was Ravi Bishnoi, the legspinner on paper with a penchant of bowling more googlies, who dismissed both men. A wrong’un in the 12th over had Tripathi slog-sweeping to deep midwicket and then another slog-sweep from Iyer in the 15th sent him back after his second IPL fifty and his highest score of the tournament.At the time, the score was 120 for 4 with 32 balls to go. With Nitish Rana in the middle, and Morgan, Karthik, Tim Seifert and Sunil Narine to follow, a minimum of ten runs per over was on. However, Morgan was lbw to a full Shami ball in the 16th over, which went only for four. Arshdeep dismissed the dangerous Rana for 31 in the 18th. With Agarwal back in the XI and finding the boundaries in the opening salvo of the chase, Rahul had the liberty of taking his time. It’s a template he has followed since IPL 2020 with equal doses of praise and criticism. This time, Agarwal’s runs at strike rate of almost 150 allowed Rahul’s scoring rate to briefly slip under the radar. What helped Agarwal to get a solid score on his return to the team was a first-over drop by Morgan when the batter had hit a full ball straight to cover.However, Rahul had made only 14 in 16 balls in the powerplay, and Agarwal’s dismissal soon after – off Varun Chakravarthy – started to bring back old memories. While Rahul’s innings ensured that there never was a situation when two new batters were at the crease, the team needed a cameo from somewhere to make up for Rahul’s scoring rate.And it came from the man who was playing his first game of the UAE leg. Left out of the XI when the tournament restarted, Shahrukh replaced Harpreet Brar in the XI for this game and came in at No. 6 with the Kings needing 32 from 21 balls. His first shot was nearly four, cut off only by an acrobatic effort by Seifert at deep point. Then came a hook for six that had enough legs to just about beat Iyer’s effort on the boundary line. A cut in front of square off Southee soon followed, and his three boundary shots took him to 15 off seven balls.However, it is the final over that worries every Kings fan. After too many close defeats over the last two seasons, the game was still not in their bag entering the 20th, more so when Rahul was out with them still needing four from four balls.But Shahrukh was not going to take it down to the last ball. Mavi went length, Shahrukh slogged to deep midwicket, Tripathi failed to take the catch, the ball popped over the skirting for six, and the Kings took home the two points.

Why Szoboszlai could be dropped against Arsenal

He somehow featured for the entirety of the game and was lucky not to be replaced in what was a hard-fought 1-0 win in their European adventure.

However, given his recent display, Slot could decide to recall one player who thrived at Anfield in the last Premier League outing, more than deserving of another start in midfield.

The man who could replace Szoboszlai against Arsenal

Midfielder Curtis Jones enjoyed an excellent performance against Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea side at Anfield last weekend, taking his opportunity under Slot with both hands.

The homegrown talent scored the winning goal at the Kop end after Nicolas Jackson had equalised just minutes earlier, but it was his all-round display that caught the eye.

Jones won six duels as he produced a workmanlike style display and won three tackles as he had a positive impact at both ends of the pitch for the Reds.

The “outstanding” talent, as described by former teammate Jordan Henderson, was unlucky to miss out against Leipzig in midweek, but could be handed another start after Szoboszlai’s recent outing.

Jones – who coincidentally has been linked with Arsenal in the past – has demonstrated that he’s more than capable of starring in big matches as seen last weekend, potentially offering that bite that Slot’s men will need during what is likely to be a cagey affair.

The game is huge for the Reds’ title credentials, proving to be an indication of how well they’ve progressed under the Dutchman’s watchful eye since his appointment.

However, if there’s anything that Slot can do to give his side the best chance of claiming all three points, he must hand a recall to Jones.

The PCB and the PSL franchises have agreed on a new financial model for the league, bringing to an end a long-running stand-off which, at times, has threatened the existence of the league as it stands. The PCB had presented a final offer of a new model at last month’s PSL governing council meeting, which included giving the six franchises a greater share of the central revenue pool, financial relief for the Covid-hit seasons five and six, as well as fixing a USD dollar-Pakistan rupee exchange rate for all future payments.Related

After a few meetings among themselves, the franchises have accepted the offer.”The longstanding matters between the PCB and the franchises were causing distraction and affecting the reputation of the brand,” Ramiz Raja, the PCB chairman, said. “I am delighted that all matters have finally been resolved, which is a big step forward in building a stronger relationship with the franchise owners as we look forward to working with them to take the HBL PSL to greater and unprecedented heights.”The main changes to the model include:Increased share of Central Pool of Revenue
In the new model, all franchises will get 95% of revenue generated from all revenue streams including broadcasting rights, sponsorship rights and gate receipts from the seventh edition onward. For PSL 5 and 6, the PCB will share 98% of the central pool revenue as an additional relief in view of the Covid-19 pandemic that disrupted both seasons. In previous years, the revenue shared varied between 85% and 90%.The franchises wanted the PCB to give them rights in perpetuity but that is not part of the new model. As per the original contract franchises will have to pay an increased franchise fee [existing fee + 25% or 25% of market value of the franchise, whichever is higher].Dollar rate fixed from date of signing
One of the key points of contention has been the exchange rate of the US dollar against the franchise fee. The price of franchises when they were auctioned was set in US dollars. In 2015, when the first five franchises came on board, the rate was PKR 105 to a dollar. Currently, the rate of a US dollar hovers above PKR 170. The agreed offer means the PCB will peg the US dollar to the day the new agreement is signed. International players will continue to be paid in USD.Franchise fee payments
In its new, final offer, the PCB has revised the franchise fee payment schedule and done away with the practice of paying player fees themselves and adjusting that amount from when they pay out from the central pool revenue. In this new model, the board is asking franchises to pay 50% of player fees in advance. The condition of putting forth a bank guarantee against the franchise fee has also been removed. The new payment structure will see franchises deposit 50% of the franchise fee two months before the start of the PSL, a further 25% one day before the start first match and the remaining 25% the day before the final match. If a franchise fails to keep to this schedule, a bank guarantee three months in advance will be reinstated for that particular franchise.More money for high-profile players
In a bid to attract foreign players, the PCB offered a lucrative package offering them more money out of the available purse. If annual net broadcast revenues (including live streams) exceed PKR 3 billion, any additional revenue of up to USD 0.5 million* will be used exclusively to procure elite players from the world. Presently top players at the PSL earn about USD 180,000 to 200,000. The new, higher amount paid to elite players will be over and above the agreed player cap agreed with the franchises. Thereafter, any amount in excess of USD 0.5 million will be shared 80:20 between the PCB and the franchises.No more franchises till PSL 10
The PSL initially started in 2015 with five teams while the sixth team – Multan Sultans – was introduced in 2017. But the PCB terminated the eight-year ownership rights after the franchise failed to pay their annual fee of USD 5.2 million. PCB repossessed the ownership rights, and resold it to another owner for USD 6.35 million. But any further franchise will not be launched till the tenth edition of the PSL.

Still just 21 years old, Moleiro can play in attacking midfield as well as on both wings to hand Las Palmas the type of versatility that three of Europe’s top clubs are now looking to add to their own respective sides.

With Gravenberch now firmly fixed in that defensive midfield role, Liverpool could instead turn their attention towards a more creative player in Moleiro, who’d undoubtedly play a part in finally getting the best out of Darwin Nunez. The interest in the Spaniard should come as little shock given how he’s started the season, scoring four goals in 10 games for Las Palmas.

It’s the type of form that Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig likely saw coming after dubbing Moleiro “silky” during an excellent 2022/23 campaign at just 19 years old.

When 2025 arrives, it will certainly be interesting to see whether Liverpool and Edwards decide to step up their pursuit of Moleiro and perhaps even trigger his £50m release clause. He’d add one final piece to the puzzle of Arne Slot’s midfield which is full of potential.

– João fez um jogo extraordinário. Deu mais dinamismo do que no jogo contra o Volta Redonda, foi bem nas fases ofensiva e defensiva. Muitas vezes, se aproxima muito da bola, mas vamos melhorar e ir corrigindo o seu posicionamento.

Vitinho, garçom, cheio de moral

– Nós temos que pensar que o Vitinho é um dos melhores jogadores com assistência. Se eu não estou enganado é o melhor. É um jogador que tem muita qualidade e que precisa ser mais determinante, com ou sem braçadeira, em outros momentos.Vem de recuperação de uma lesão nas férias e integrou-se bastante bem. Nos tem dado boas indicações, com muita vontade e responsabilidade.

Marinho precisa de equilíbrio

-Ele é explosivo, mas tem que saber dar pausa ao jogo. A equipe as vezes não acompanha a velocidade dele. Ele precisa saber quando pausar e equilibrar a equipe em todos seus setores.

Cultura da vitória

– Nós temos que ir preparando, mas ganhando, porque a cultura é essa. Ganhamos, criamos, não sofremos gol. Eles (Boavista) não criaram oportunidades, e esperamos que seja o mais breve possível essa consolidação.
