Dinesh Chandimal 'hopes to give it everything' to revive career

Having received a lifeline due to Dickwella’s suspension, he hopes to make the opportunities count

Andrew Fidel Fernando28-Nov-2021

Sri Lanka Cricket

Dinesh Chandimal has had an unusual Test career. He has 11 Test hundreds, which in this side is equal to Angelo Mathews’ tally, and fewer only than Dimuth Karunaratne’s 13, and yet he had been left out of the XI in the previous series against Bangladesh. He is one of only two Sri Lanka batters (the other being Mathews) to average over 40, but has not had his place nailed down in the side over the past three years. There was a stint as captain, which was abruptly cut short; historic issues with the bouncer, which saw him axed not just from the XI but from the squad altogether, before being summarily dispatched to a Sri Lanka A tour. Then there were lean spells that have seen selectors ask him to go rediscover form at the domestic level. That he is even in Sri Lanka’s XI now, is largely down to the fact that Niroshan Dickwella (Sri Lanka’s regular Test wicketkeeper), is serving a one-year suspension for breaking Covid protocols. Where he had been a top-order batter, Chandimal has the gloves again, and is coming in lower down.”I started in Tests as a wicketkeeper, batting around No. 5 and 6. After about 2015, when our senior batters retired, I had the chance to come up the order and bat at No. 4,” he said. “It’s not easy to bat No. 4 and keep wickets, so I didn’t have the gloves. But now I’ve got the chance again to bat lower down and keep wickets. I’m hoping to give it everything.”It’s possible that batting slightly lower down the order suits Chandimal anyway. He was good with the bat from No. 6 in the first Test, producing an important 45 in the first innings, and a 10 not out off eight balls as Sri Lanka were batting for the declaration in the second. Overall, he averages 47.96 and No. 5, 42.92 at No. 6, and just a touch under 40 at No. 7 – his three best positions by average. Nine of his 11 tons have come from No. 5 or No. 6.”Since I’m the keeper, I’ll only get to bat at No. 6 or 7. For now I’m at six. It’s hard to bat higher than that, because sometimes you have to keep 100 or 120 overs, and given the weather in Sri Lanka, you need a break. It is its own challenge, because there’s only one more batter after me. But my job is to figure out how to bat with that last batter, and how to get the most out of the partnerships with the bowlers.”His wicketkeeping was also largely excellent – on a difficult surface – in the first Test, which is particularly impressive when you consider that he had not been designated wicketkeeper in Tests since January 2017. But keeping in limited overs formats has helped keep him sharp, Chandimal said.”In the local matches I’ve been playing as a wicketkeeper, and even during the World Cup, I did keep,” he said. “I kept my wicketkeeping training going, thinking that I would get an opportunity that way.”

Ipswich flop now cannot be trusted to play for McKenna again

It’s been a whirlwind few years for Ipswich Town, as Kieran McKenna has led them from the depths of League One to the heights of the Premier League in the blink of an eye.

The Tractor Boys have made a good account of themselves in the top flight so far, as while they are without a win, they have picked up five points.

Moreover, a few of the club’s summer signings have quickly established themselves as key players for McKenna and look like brilliant buys.

However, that cannot be said of all of them, including one who simply cannot be trusted to play for the first team again this season.

McKenna's brilliant buys

So, before we get to the offending player in question, let’s look at a couple of the club’s more successful signings this season, starting with the best of the lot: Liam Delap.

The Tractor Boys agreed to pay Manchester City up to £20m for the up-and-coming striker in mid-July, and while there was some excitement around the potential so many believed him to possess, few would have expected him to play as well as he has for the Suffolk side.

In just 11 appearances, the Winchester-born poacher has scored five goals, including a brace against Aston Villa, and if the club are to beat the drop this season, it’ll undoubtedly be largely down to his impressive output.

Now, another star that McKenna welcomed to Portman Road this summer is Sammie Szmodics, and while he hasn’t been able to quite replicate the ludicrous form that saw him rack up 33 goals and four assists in 48 games last season, he’s shown glimpses of quality here and there.

For example, he’s found the back of the net twice in ten appearances from an expected goals figure of 2.01 and, given that he’s missed three big chances on top of that, he could see his tally balloon when he’s fully acclimated to life with the Blues.

However, alongside some of their excellent to middling transfers, the club also made what is now looking like a poor decision to sign another vastly experienced star on loan, a star who might not play for the club again.

Ipswich's transfer mistake

So, the player in question is Manchester City ace Kalvin Phillips, who put pen to paper on a season-long loan deal in mid-August.

The first thing to say is that even though he has had a rough few years, the former Leeds United star showed just how talented he was when playing with the Peacocks, and only last year John Stones commented on his “outrageous” passing abilities.

However, in the last few years, we have not seen the player who starred for the Whites.

The 28-year-old seriously struggled on loan with West Ham United last season, playing just 320 minutes across 14 poor performances that saw him pick up a red card in just his fourth game before ending the season out of the squad entirely.

Unfortunately, his form has not improved much this season, and despite making just eight appearances for the club, he has already picked up a red car, which completely turned the tide of the game against Leicester City on Saturday.

Moreover, reports have now revealed that discussions are being held at the club over potentially cancelling his loan deal due to serious concerns over his conditioning, with some at the club supposedly “amazed” at his ‘lack of mobility and running power.’

Ultimately, Phillips has shown in the past that he is a Premier League-level footballer, but so far this season, he has looked way off the pace, and after costing the club what should have been their first win of the season, he shouldn’t be trusted to play in the league again.

Nottingham Forest eyeing January deal for in-demand £35k-p/w player

Nottingham Forest are interested in signing an in-demand £35,000-a-week defender in January, according to a new report.

The Reds have enjoyed a fantastic start to the Premier League season but suffered a bump in the road over the weekend as they were beaten by Newcastle United at The City Ground. Nuno Espirito Santo will hope this doesn’t derail their campaign as supporters continue to dream of European football.

Nottingham Forest and 8 other Premier League surprise packages

The Premier League has had plenty of surprise packages over the previous 30 years – here are some of the best.

1 ByRoss Kilvington Nov 5, 2024 Nottingham Forest news

Forest’s start to the season has been so good that owner Evangelos Marinakis is keen to tie Nuno down to a new contract. The Portuguese’s current deal runs until 2026, but the fact that the Reds sit in the top half, a few points away from the top four, has “impressed” Marinakis to the point that a new deal is in the offing.

That will likely be a priority for the Forest board, as they will not want to lose Nuno to another team. But as well as looking to secure their manager’s future, the Premier League side are also looking ahead to January.

Forest are interested in signing Chris Rigg from Sunderland after his impressive performances in the Championship have put him on their radar. The midfielder has caught the eye of a number of teams in recent weeks, and Forest are now the latest side to show an interest as they look to bolster their squad when January arrives.

As well as looking at Rigg, Forest also hold an interest in another player playing in England – someone who is unhappy with his current situation.

Nottingham Forest eyeing January deal for Lamptey

According to CaughtOffside, Nottingham Forest are interested in signing Tariq Lamptey from Brighton & Hove Albion. The right-back has been with the Seagulls since January 2020, when he joined from Chelsea after coming through the youth academy at Stamford Bridge.

Lamptey, who earns £35,000 a week at Brighton, was a firm regular in the starting XI when he arrived, playing a key role under former managers Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi, but the same cannot be said under Fabian Hurzeler.

The 24-year-old has played just four times this season, and three of those appearances have come in the Carabao Cup. His single appearance in the league came in a 10-minute cameo against Wolves a couple of weeks ago.

Lamptey is in the final year of his contract at Brighton and is thought to be considering leaving the club by the end of the season, but given that is when his contract ends, Brighton may look to offload him in January.

It is reported that the defender has shown no desire to sign a new contract as he is unhappy with his current situation, which has alerted Forest, as well as Brentford, Everton, and West Ham. His preference is to remain in the Premier League, but he does have an option to move abroad, as Juventus are also interested in his services.

Liam Livingstone has capped a breakout year by extending his contract with Lancashire to the end of 2024.An explosive batsman for club and country, 28-year-old Livingstone has been a mainstay in the Lancashire lineup across all three formats since his debut in their 2015 Blast-winning campaign and he has made 163 appearances for the county. He averages 38.36 with the bat in first-class matches and has a strike rate of 144.73 in T20s and 165.78 in T20Is.Livingstone earned call-ups to England’s white-ball squads, most recently for the T20 World Cup, and he made his ODI debut in India in March.Playing just his sixth T20I, Livingstone scored scored England’s fastest century in the format with a 42-ball effort in a losing cause against Pakistan in July. He has made numerous appearances in T20 leagues around the world, including the IPL, Big Bash and PSL, with Peshawar Zalmi retaining him in the platinum category on Friday.Related

Livingstone has struck a century in each form of the game for Lancashire – including five first-class tons – and in 2018 he became one of just six Red Rose batsmen to notch a century in T20 cricket with a 51-ball blitz at Derbyshire. He has also added leg-spin and off-spin bowling to his game in recent seasons, picking up 83 wickets across all three formats for Lancashire and offering a handy option in the England attack.”I have always said that it is a privilege to play for the Red Rose and I am delighted to have the opportunity to continue doing that until at least 2024 and hopefully much longer after that,” Livingstone said. “The coaching team and supporters have shown great faith in me throughout my career and I am determined to pay that back by helping to deliver trophies to Emirates Old Trafford over the next few years.”Mark Chilton, Lancashire’s director of cricket performance, said: “We’re really pleased to have secured Liam’s services for the next three years. His performance levels and reputation in world cricket continue to grow and he is a huge asset to our squad – in all formats of the game.”At the age of 28, Liam is now one of the more experienced players in the dressing room at Lancashire. He’s a match-winner, destructive in all facets of the game now and those are the players that you want in your side.”Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan signed a two-year contract extension with Northamptonshire on Friday. Kerrigan had a year to run on his original contract but has now committed to the club until at least the end of the 2024 season. After gaining promotion in 2019, Northamptonshire take their place in Division One of the LV= Insurance County Championship next year and Kerrigan was looking forward to what lay ahead.”It’s a really exciting time to be at the club,” Kerrigan said. “We’ve got Will Young coming in who’s a high-class player and I’m sure he’ll be chomping at the bit to get going. There’s a good blend and mix of young and experienced players in our squad so hopefully we can be really competitive in the County Championship.”

Teams with the most AFCON titles – ranked

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has become a staple in the footballing calendar since its inception in the 1950s.

First held in 1957 with just three sides, it has evolved to become the major footballing tournament in Africa, and is now held every two years in various countries across the continent.

Ivory Coast are the current holders, having beaten Nigeria in the final of the 2023 competition thanks to a late winner from Sebastien Haller.

In doing so, the Elephants became just the third side in the competition’s history to lift the trophy on home soil, after a run in the competition that had also seen them thrashed 4-0 in the group stages and sack head coach Jean-Louis Gasset.

But despite their success, they remain a fair way down the list when it comes to the most successful teams in the tournament. With the qualifiers finalised for the upcoming edition in December 2025, we’ve taken a look at just who those are.

AFCON: Who are the last 10 winners of the Africa Cup of Nations?

FFC looks in detail at the last 10 teams to win the Africa Cup of Nations and exactly how they did it.

ByJamie Rooke Feb 12, 2024 8 8 teams (1 title each) Senegal are the most recent first-time winners (2021)

With the final tournament having been contested by just 16 sides until 2019, it is a truly impressive feat that eight different nations have managed to get their hands on the trophy once.

However, all of Senegal (2021), Zambia (2012), Tunisia (2004), South Africa (1996), Morocco (1976), Congo (1972), Sudan (1970) and Ethiopia (1962) are able to say that is precisely what they have done.

Of those, Morocco’s sole win – from topping a round-robin in 1976 – is perhaps the most surprising given their recent footballing heritage, while Senegal have made the most of a golden generation of talent with the likes of Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly and Sadio Mané all part of the squad that lifted the trophy in early 2022.

However, all eight continue to look for that elusive second AFCON title, with none of those sides making it past the last 16 of the competition in its most recent iteration – but six now qualified for the 2025 tournament.

7 DR Congo 2 titles (1968, 1974)

A relatively surprising entry on the list is DR Congo, who have won the Africa Cup of Nations on two occasions.

Les Léopards lifted the trophy in 1968, beating Ghana 1-0 in the final of the eight-team tournament as Pierre Kalala wrote his name into the history books with the only goal.

They were knocked out in the semi-finals of the 1972 edition, but clinched their second title two years later while known as Zaire, beating Zambia. The final ended in a 2-2 draw after extra time, which prompted a replay that they won 2-0. Across both games, Pierre Ndaye Mulamba scored all four of his country’s goals, finishing as the top scorer in the competition with nine goals.

DR Congo have not tasted success since, and finished fourth in the most recent Africa Cup of Nations by knocking out Egypt before narrowly falling at the semi-final hurdle to eventual winners Ivory Coast thanks to a goal from Sebastien Haller.

Now qualified for the 2025 tournament, they will be hoping to add a third title to their trophy cabinet.

Algeria are regulars at the Africa Cup of Nations, but have only made the final on three occasions. They struggled to qualify for much of their early history, before finishing runners-up in 1980, losing to Nigeria in the final.

It took another decade for them to return to a final, but they were more successful at the second time of asking. Qualifying automatically as hosts, Les Fennecs didn’t lose a game on their way to the final, before getting revenge on Nigeria with a 1-0 win in the final to lift the trophy on home soil for the first time.

For the next 27 years, they made it past the last 16 on just one occasion, but Algeria produced another astonishing unbeaten run in 2019 with a final win over Senegal to win their second and most recent AFCON as Baghdad Bounedjah scored the only goal of the game.

They will be hoping they don’t have to wait as long again for their third success, with their ticket to the 2025 tournament secured.

The 9 most successful teams in the FA Cup

The FA Cup has been won by some of the biggest teams in the country since its inception in the 19th century.

ByRoss Kilvington Oct 30, 2024 5 Nigeria 3 titles (1980, 1994, 2013)

No other team has been around the final four of the competition as regularly as Nigeria, with the Super Eagles the unfortunate side to have lost in the final most often.

They have finished third on eight occasions, most recently in 2019, and their second-placed finish in 2023 was their fifth in the history of the competition.

However, they have also managed to hold their nerve in the final on three occasions. Beating Algeria in 1980, they then endured a series of near-misses for 14 years until they again lifted the trophy, this time with a 2-1 win over Zambia in the 1994 final.

Their most recent success came in 2013, as they met Burkina Faso in the final, having drawn against each other in the group stages.

This time, the Super Eagles made no mistake, edging past their opponents 1-0 to claim their third AFCON success, though they failed to qualify for the competition to defend it in 2015.

A powerhouse in African football and heading to Morocco for 2025, history suggests that they will be there or thereabouts once more.

Given the legendary players at their disposal, it is perhaps a shock to see Ivory Coast so low on this list.

The likes of Didier Drogba, Yaya and Kolo Toure, Solomon Kalou and Gervinho all boast Premier League experience, and they helped Ivory Coast lift the trophy in 2015 as they beat Ghana in a tense penalty shootout.

But that was just their second competition win; their first came back in 1992 on their ninth attempt, with the previous eight having seen them finish no higher than third.

Their most recent success leaves them as the team to beat in the 2025 competition, and with a host of household names still littering their squad, the Elephants will be a force to be reckoned with.

ByBrogan Clasper Jun 11, 2024 3 Ghana 4 titles (1963, 1965, 1978, 1982)

Ghana are next on the list, with their successes coming in short, sharp bursts. The Black Stars won the first two competitions they qualified for in 1963 and 1965 (when only three games were needed to establish a winner), while they were runners-up in the following two tournaments.

In a bizarre turn, they did not qualify for the next three editions, before returning with a bang in 1978 with another title and following that up with their fourth in 1982, beating Libya on penalties.

Since then, they have only flirted with success, finishing as runners-up on three occasions, including most recently in 2015 when they lost to the Ivory Coast on penalties.

In a shock turn of events, they failed to qualify for the 2025 competition, missing out on the final tournament for the first time since 2004.

You cannot discuss Africa Cup of Nations successes without mentioning Cameroon. The Indomitable Lions have lifted the trophy on five occasions and, in Samuel Eto’o, boast the competition’s all-time top goalscorer, with the former Barcelona man having found the net 18 times.

His goals helped Cameroon to their tournament wins in 2000 and 2002, scoring five across the two competitions.

Those successes came 12 years after Cameroon had last lifted the trophy, with the African giants reaching the final in three successive tournaments between 1984 and 1988.

It has been a fallow period by their own standards since, with Eto’o’s nation only lifting the trophy once in two decades, with their most recent success coming in 2017 as they beat Egypt to secure their fifth AFCON title.

Every Player of the Tournament at the European Championship

Since its inception in 1996, UEFA has handed out an award for the best player at the European Championship. But who has been given the accolade?

ByStephan Georgiou Jul 16, 2024 1 Egypt 7 titles (1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008, 2010)

Undisputedly the most successful side in the history of the tournament, Egypt admittedly had an early advantage.

The Pharaohs won each of the first two tournaments, which consisted of just three teams. This was followed by a run of six consecutive semi-final exits for tournaments they had qualified for.

It meant that their next success didn’t come until 1986, beating Cameroon on penalties, and it took another 12 years to follow that up with a fourth competition win, this time a more comfortable 2-0 victory over South Africa.

It was in the early 2000s that Egypt truly emerged as the powerhouse of African football, though, winning three successive tournaments between 2006 and 2010 – becoming the only side in the history of the competition to have managed such a reign of success and doing so without conceding a goal in any of the three finals.

14 years have now passed since their last success, but with Mohamed Salah ready to lead the line once more into the 2025 edition, they remain a side more than capable of lifting a ninth title at the next tournament.
