'I'll be doing a lot of listening' – new CA chair Lachlan Henderson outlines fresh strategy

Re-engaging with players, appointing a new coach, and refreshing the BBL are on Henderson’s agenda

New Cricket Australia chairman Lachlan Henderson got on the front foot on his first day at the wheel, stressing the need for the CA board to re-engage with Australia’s players as well as refreshing the BBL, while also appointing a new men’s coach and a new ethics commissioner in the first few months of his tenure. There are some wounds to heal between the CA board and the administration and the men’s team and former players, in particular, following the resignation of coach Justin Langer after the Ashes. That came hot on the heels of Tim Paine’s resignation as Australia’s Test captain prior to the start of the Ashes. CA and the board were widely criticised for the way the two issues were handled from a governance perspective.Related

“I think our former players, both recent former players and more distant former players, have all earned the right to an opinion about what happens in the game,” Henderson said. “And I’ll be doing a lot of listening in my first few weeks and months in the role and that’ll include talking to our past players.”My communication style will be to be open, transparent, hopefully consistent. I work in health care. We’ve negotiated a pandemic in the last two years. That’s required a fair amount of resilience. So within the bounds of the confidentiality of boards, I hope that there’s a really open and transparent way forward.”Henderson was appointed unanimously by the board on Thursday after an interview process with a select group of candidates. He became the fourth CA chairman in four years and the third in five months, taking over from interim chairman Richard Freudenstein, who took on the role following the resignation of Nick Hockley.Henderson comes to the job with a glittering resume in both his profession as chief executive of Epworth HealthCare and cricket governance, where he has been WACA director and chairman and a CA director since 2018 after moving from Perth to Melbourne. He also played junior cricket for Western Australia and first grade cricket for University Cricket Club in Perth. He pointed to better communication and stronger relationships with the current playing groups without compromising good governance.”I think we do need to re-engage with our players,” Henderson said. “That’s been incredibly difficult. They’ve been mostly operating out of bio-secure bubbles. But, as a new chair of the board, I’d like to think that we re-engage with our cricketers, both males and females. And also my role is to also talk to cricketers at all levels, from grassroots right through to the elite players.”Henderson acknowledged that the process surrounding Langer’s resignation did need reviewing after the way it played out.”It got messy in terms of things playing out in the media,” he said. “But the board’s role was to receive recommendations from management. We made our decision based on that. With any significant decision like that boards should reflect on that process that was involved. It is unfortunate that a bit of that played out in the media, and we will reflect on whether that should have been accelerated through the summer.”Henderson, who was chairman of the WACA when Langer was WA and Perth Scorchers coach, confirmed he had reached out to the former coach and spoken to him via text. He hoped to have a conversation with him in the coming weeks. He also said that he was keen for an appointment of a new men’s coach, or coaches, “sooner rather than later” but acknowledged that the appointment process was in the hands of CEO Nick Hockley and Head of national teams Ben Oliver. He revealed that CA’s board has a new cricket strategy for 2022, which involved reviewing and refreshing the BBL. The BBL has struggled through back-to-back Covid-ravaged seasons, and while TV ratings have remained strong, there are concerns around the product and the competition as a whole, particularly with a new TV rights deal to be negotiated in 2024.One major challenge for Lachlan Henderson is juggling his CEO role at Epworth HealthCare with the travel demands as CA chairman•Getty Images

“The first step in the Big Bash renewal is the strategy,” Henderson said. “The actual structure of the Big Bash and any changes like that are not on our agenda at the moment. We will look at what’s the best for cricket.”It’s a really important product for our states and their financial capacity as well and obviously for our players, we’ll be engaging with them as well. It’s not about a complete overhaul. We have a great product. But we’re doing it to renew and refresh the BBL.”There’ll be a consideration around the length of the season, also the duration of the season. I think they’ll all really be important considerations as we look at the Big Bash and we’ll consult widely with those involved in the product, our states, our players, our partners, our broadcast partners, and we’ll work out what’s the best way forward.”Henderson noted that CA had a A$ 40 million bio-security cost from the last two seasons that it needs to recoup from a financial perspective, as well as a decline in participation at grass-roots levels because of Covid-10 that needed to be addressed. His other major focus in the first few months of his tenure would be to appoint a CA ethics commissioner, which is one of the final recommendations of the 2018 Ethics Center review yet to be implemented. “I’ll be making that appointment in the weeks ahead after we review all the candidates that are available.”One major challenge for Henderson is juggling his difficult CEO role at Epworth HealthCare with the travel demands as CA chairman. He will not be going to Pakistan with the Test team, although Hockley will be. He will attempt to travel with the men’s and women’s teams later in the year.

Club ready to pay £8m+ for Southampton ace told to find new club in January

Southampton could be set for a welcome windfall as one of their stars is attracting concrete interest ahead of the January transfer window, with Russell Martin seemingly happy to let him leave.

Southampton expected to be active in January

The Saints signed 15 new players over the summer as they looked to adapt to life in the Premier League, but that is yet to bear fruit as they sit rock bottom.

With just one win to their name all season, Southampton are already five points from safety and threatening to be cut off from the other 19 teams in the division. Their most recent defeat, a 3-2 loss to table-topping Liverpool, clearly showed their problems as all three goals stemmed from mistakes from Martin’s side.

First, they lost the ball inside their own penalty area, before Alex McCarthy misjudged a race with Mohammed Salah and to rub salt in the wound, summer signing Yukinari Sugawara handled the ball inside the box to concede a spot kick which Salah duly converted to seal all three points.

Things are not likely to get any easier immediately for the St Mary’s side, with games against high-flying Brighton, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Tottenham in their next four before a trip to Fulham, all of whom are in the top half of the Premier League as things stand.

Southampton’s next five Premier League games

Brighton (Away)

Chelsea (Home)

Aston Villa (Away)

Tottenham (Home)

Fulham (Away)

The Saints are expected to be active in January despite their numerous summer additions, with a move for Romano Schmidt having already been mooted on the south coast.

St Mary’s exits may be needed to balance the books though, and now one man could be on the chopping block.

Belgian side willing to pay £8m+ for Southampton striker

That comes as reports in Belgium claim that Champions League side Club Brugge are ready to shell out to sign out-of-favour Southampton man Paul Onuachu permanently in January.

The striker has been out of favour since his arrival on the south coast and spent last season out on loan with Turkish side Trabzonspor, where he found the net 17 times in 25 appearances.

However, his chances under Martin have been few and far between; the striker started his first game of the season against Liverpool and was not even part of the squad for the first five games of the campaign.

It was claimed that the Saints were “prepared to keep him” if no suitable bid came forward, hardly a ringing endorsement of Martin’s faith in the striker, and his reluctance to start the Nigerian has proved that yet further.

Now, they and he may be offered a way out. After Onuachu was “told to find a new club” by the Saints, Club Brugge have shown an interest provided that they can get a deal done for “an amount under ten million euros” [£8.3m], though of course negotiations could drive that higher.

Onuachu, meanwhile, is keen to leave the south coast side permanently and “is already looking forward to a return to the Jupiler Pro League”, where he starred for Genk before joining the Saints in 2022.

Out of contract in 2026, Southampton may not get a better chance to minimise their losses on the forward, who they paid £15m to sign in 2023, while those funds could be used to battle relegation.

Harris hammers unbeaten century to guide Victoria home

Opener smashes 102 not out, his highest one-day score for Victoria, to help the visitors to a five-wicket win

Marcus Harris has made a statement ahead of the Pakistan Test tour, smashing his first Marsh Cup century for Victoria to help the visitors to a comfortable five-wicket win over South Australia at Karen Rolton Oval.Harris made 102 not out from 105 balls and struck back-to-back boundaries off Lloyd Pope in the 46th over, the second of those, a blow wide of long-on, bringing up the winning runs and his century. It was the first time he had reached three figures in Australia’s 50-over domestic competition after 48 games over 11 years. He had made one List A century for Leicestershire in the Royal London Cup in England last winter. The No. 3 batter controlled the chase, cashing in on the good early work of Mackenzie Harvey and Jake Fraser-McGurk. Harvey made his second consecutive half-century in the competition and his highest List A score of 61, while Fraser-McGurk clubbed five fours and a six in a 29-ball 36 that formed part of a 69-run opening stand in the first ten overs. Peter Handscomb continued his fine form with a brisk 45 in the middle-order to support Harris. The chase wobbled briefly when Pope struck three times with less than 63 required, but Harris steered Victoria home.Earlier, offspinner Todd Murphy and medium-pacer Jonathan Merlo strangled South Australia’s middle-order to help restrict them to 259. Both men took two wickets each and conceded just over four an over in their combined 16 overs. Quick Brody Couch also bowled well, claiming the key wicket of Jake Weatherald.Nathan McSweeney made his maiden List A half-century but fell for 53 off 84 balls, while Jake Lehmann made 49 in their century stand for the fourth wicket after Australia Test and 50-over wicketkeeper Alex Carey missed out. Liam Scott (42 not out off 33 balls) and Nathan McAndrew (25 off 19) finished the innings strongly, striking six fours and a six between them to give South Australia something to defend. But Harris was too good in the end.

Aston Villa must finally sell £13m flop who Gerrard was "delighted" to sign

Aston Villa haven’t experienced such a crisis in confidence since Steven Gerrard was in the Villa Park hot seat, when winless runs were the norm in the West Midlands under the unsuccessful manager.

Indeed, the Liverpool icon turned Villa boss would bow out from his managerial duties at the club with just two wins registered in the Premier League at the start of the 2022/23 season, leading to Unai Emery taking on the reins.

Ex-Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard.

Now, the Spaniard has his work cut out for him with no victories in his last eight.

But, it wasn’t all doom and gloom with Gerrard at the helm looking back, considering the 44-year-old did sign off on some exciting signings during his brief tenure.

Best Gerrard signings at Villa

The obvious place to start here is Lucas Digne, who remains in the first team to this day under Emery, after being purchased for £25m in January of 2022 by Gerrard.

This season alone, the 31-year-old has amassed 16 appearances in all competitions, with two assists also coming the ex-Everton full-back’s way to prove his worth to Emery’s current troops.

Aston Villa defender Lucas Digne

Gerrard also sanctioned the standout purchase of Phillippe Coutinho when he was in charge, using his Anfield connections to lure the Brazilian back to England on a permanent £17.2m deal.

The 32-year-old showed flashes of his quality under this previous regime, with six goals and three assists tallied up overall, but now finds himself out of the first-team picture and out on loan in his native Brazil.

Whilst there were minor success stories under the now Al-Ettifaq boss’ stint, there were also some really poor acquisitions that entered the building, which is definitely the case with this forgettable Villa recruit.

Dendoncker's time at Villa

The dud in question here is former Wolverhampton Wanderers star Leander Dendoncker, who swapped Molineux for nearby Villa in September 2022 for a bumper £13m.

There was plenty to justify Villa forking out this amount to win the Belgian at the time too, who had caught the eye in the West Midlands for the Old Gold before moving on, with 12 goals accumulated over 159 clashes from the middle of the park.

Leander Dendoncker for Aston Villa.

Gerrard also intensified the fanfare around the 29-year-old’s arrival by stating that he was “delighted” to welcome Dendoncker to the club when the signing was unveiled, with many at Villa Park hopeful that the fresh face was going to be a success…

But, much like the arrival of Jan Bednarek on loan around the same time, who Gerrard was also excited by, the ex-Wolves man would go down as a flop, with the 6 foot 2 midfielder now on loan at RSC Anderlecht and suffering the same fate as Coutinho in the process.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

Unfortunately, to date, Dendoncker has only pulled on a Villa jersey a slim 36 times over the course of two lacklustre seasons, with only eight Premier League contests coming his way under Emery last season.

With talk that the 29-year-old could be permanently moved on very soon, it feels very likely that no more games will be gifted to Dendoncker at his parent club, especially when you consider the options the Spaniard has at his disposal in midfield over the forgotten Gerrard buy.

Emery will just hope he can turn around Villa’s drop in form, unlike his predecessor, with games coming thick and fast in December, away from focusing in on Dendoncker’s precarious future at the Premier League strugglers.

Rawat 66 seals deal as RCB keep Mumbai winless

Suryakumar’s 68 in vain as Mumbai join fellow sufferers Chennai Super Kings at the bottom of the table

Karthik Krishnaswamy09-Apr-20224:07

Wasim Jaffer: Plenty of holes for Mumbai Indians to plug

Back in 2011, Mumbai Indians had an exception made to allow them to field five overseas players in the Champions League T20. Now, a poor start to IPL 2022 has pushed them in the opposite direction, leading them to pick just two overseas players for their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Pune.It didn’t work, and a middle-overs meltdown left Mumbai winless after four games, leaving them bottom of the table alongside fierce rivals and fellow sufferers Chennai Super Kings, who have an identical record and a slightly worse net run rate.Royal Challengers’ bowlers, led by Wanindu Hasaranga and Harshal Patel, triggered that meltdown, and their batters were left chasing only 152. Mumbai might have struggled to set even that target if not for an unbeaten, situation-defying 37-ball 68 from Suryakumar Yadav. The target wasn’t enough to challenge Royal Challengers, though, as Anuj Rawat scored his maiden IPL half-century in just his fourth game, and Virat Kohli showed immense shot-making form in making 48 off 36. Two reverse-swatted fours from the returning Glenn Maxwell put the seal on Royal Challengers’ third win in four games, achieved with nine balls to spare. The calm
The start of this match gave no clue as to how it would proceed. There was a green tinge on the pitch, and the new ball moved around initially, but once the shine disappeared, the ball pinged nicely off the bats of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan. From 6 for no loss after two overs, Mumbai raced to 49 for no loss at the end of the powerplay. The storm
Harshal gave Royal Challengers the breakthrough they craved in the seventh over, having Rohit caught and bowled when the Mumbai captain was early on a flick. That was the start of a dramatic slump, as Mumbai lost six wickets for 29 runs. The bowling was responsible for this, chiefly Harshal’s dipping offcutters, Akash Deep’s hard lengths, and Hasaranga’s wrong’un, which deceived Dewald Brevis and Kieron Pollard, both left leaden-footed and plumb lbw, playing all around the ball. And Mumbai’s situation seemed to induce a sense of panic too. Tilak Varma, who has made such a bright start to his IPL career, was run-out going for a needless quick single, taking on the fleet-footed Maxwell with predictable consequences. The parallel universe
No other batter looked comfortable through the middle overs, but if there was anything two-paced about this pitch, it wasn’t affecting Suryakumar, who middled his shots from the get go. A back-foot punch off Akash gave early warning of his form, and two overs later he stepped out and away from the line to launch Shahbaz Ahmed inside-out for six.Jaydev Unadkat, playing his first match for Mumbai, gave steadfast support and got the best seat in the house to watch Suryakumar’s strokeplay. He hit six sixes, including a slog-sweep off Hasaranga and a pick-up flick off Mohammed Siraj that flew into the back rows beyond the leg-side boundary. But the best of them just cleared the ropes. Aware that Suryakumar was standing deep in his crease with an open stance to allow him to access the leg side off anything remotely straight, Siraj went full and wide, forcing him to reach for the ball. He did this, and he somehow made sweet contact with an open bat-face to slice the ball over the third man boundary.A brilliant last over from Harshal, who was getting his slower ball to dip and grip and behave unpredictably, went for just seven despite a last-ball full-toss muscled for the last of Suryakumar’s sixes. Royal Challengers needed just 152 to win.Rawat and Faf make slow start
Mumbai knew they needed early wickets to have any chance. Accordingly, they threw everything they had at Royal Challengers in the early overs, using Jasprit Bumrah for two overs out of the first six. Royal Challengers hit just two boundaries in the powerplay, back-to-back sixes from Rawat dancing down the track to Unadkat.Faf du Plessis went at a slow pace, scoring just 16 off 22 before holing out to an Unadkat slower ball in the ninth over. By then, he and Rawat had put on the third-slowest fifty opening stand in IPL history.Kohli gives RCB impetus
Royal Challengers still only needed eight-and-a-half runs an over at that point, and Kohli, walking in at No. 3, immediately began finding the boundary even as Unadkat and Pollard got their cutters to stick in the pitch. Kohli stepped out and made room to flay Pollard through point, and stepped out in the next over to whip M Ashwin against the turn, wide of long-on.Basil Thampi sent down a 15-run 12th over, easing any residual pressure Royal Challengers may have felt. This over included the shot of the innings, an effortless flicked six that showcased Rawat’s balance and timing.Mumbai’s last hopes resided in the frame of Bumrah, who came on with 60 needed off 42. Kohli shut the door on those hopes in a moment that seemed symbolic, judging the length of a Bumrah bouncer instantly and swatting it between long-on and deep midwicket. When Brevis put down the simplest of catches at deep square leg to reprieve Kohli in the next over, the game was all but up.Rawat hurried Royal Challengers towards their target with two more sixes, a pull off Pollard in the 16th over and a charging slog off Unadkat in the 17th. With just 23 needed off 20, though, Rawat was run out by a direct hit from the debutant Ramandeep Singh while responding to Kohli’s call for a quick second. Then Brevis, brought on to bowl his legspin for the first time in the IPL, had Kohli lbw with just eight runs to get. It gave the crowd at the MCA Stadium – whose chants suggested it was mostly Royal Challengers-supporting – a brief and satisfying glimpse of Maxwell at the crease.
