R Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer make it 2-0 for India in close finish

Mehidy’s five-for gave the hosts a big chance before the duo patiently took India over the line before lunch break

Jaffer: India’s defensive approach in a small chase was disappointing

A fighting and defiant half-century stand between No. 8 Shreyas Iyer and R Ashwin saved India from a lower-order collapse and led them to a thin three-wicket win on a turning and low pitch on the fourth morning in Dhaka. Resuming on 45 for 4, India needed 100 more to win and Bangladesh six wickets. Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s five-for gave the hosts a big chance with quick wickets in the first half hour before Ashwin and Iyer used patience, accounted for the low bounce and also scored at a good clip – at over four an over – to take India over the line before the scheduled lunch break.India strengthened their second spot on the WTC table with the 2-0 series win and have a four-Test series coming up at home against Australia, of which they can afford to lose only one game to not lose out on the final spot.WTC standings as on December 25, 2022•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

India were in deep trouble in the first hour at 74 for 7, still 71 adrift from the target, when Iyer and Ashwin came together. Iyer used his straight bat to play out the spinners patiently and Ashwin used a low stance for the low bounce especially against Mehidy as the Bangladesh spinners stuck to a stump-to-stump line that had fetched them three wickets in the morning.Mehidy even created a chance when Ashwin was on 1 and India on 80, when Ashwin gloved the ball to short leg where Mominul Haque put down a straightforward chance. Just like Bangladesh made India pay for the dropped chances on Saturday, Ashwin cashed in on the life he got and picked up regular boundaries once he moved into double-digits. He collected two in an over off Khaled Ahmed and finished things off in a 16-run over off Mehidy which started with a first-ball six over midwicket and ended with back-to-back fours, taking Ashwin to an unbeaten 42 off 62 while Iyer was on 29 at the other end.Mehidy Hasan Miraz had India in all sorts of trouble on the fourth morning•AFP/Getty Images

Bangladesh had raced ahead with an early advantage in a dramatic first hour that saw a few boundaries, numerous appeals, two reviews, and three wickets.Jaydev Unadkat survived a very marginal lbw call on the third ball of the day and Bangladesh’s review showed the ball was just hitting leg stump, which wasn’t enough to overturn the on-field decision. Unadkat slog-swept the very next ball for six over midwicket but fell in the next over when Shakib Al Hasan slipped in a quick one from around the wicket to trap him right in front on the back foot and Unadkat wasted a review.Mehidy then removed two left-hand batters in consecutive overs for his eighth Test five-for. Rishabh Pant, at No. 7, unleashed a reverse sweep early on against Shakib for four but also looked nervous while either stepping out too often against the spinners or going on the back foot dangerously against sharp turn. Mehidy bowled on the fourth stump line consistently to him from around the wicket and pitched one marginally shorter to trap Pant on the back foot for 9.Seventy-one for 6 quickly became 74 for 7. Axar Patel carried on from his overnight 26 with regular strokes to keep the score ticking whenever he got width or length to work with. But he also became a victim of Mehidy’s stifling line and flat trajectory when a grubber deflected off his pads on the back foot and hit the stumps to send him back for 34.Shakib replaced himself with Taijul Islam to keep the left-arm spin threat going from one end and Iyer and Ashwin kept their bats close to pads and leaned forward to block the ball patiently in a boundary-less spell of 67 balls. With two right-hand batters on now, Mehidy’s magic didn’t look as unplayable now, barring the life Ashwin got. Iyer hit his first four on his 29th ball when Mehidy pitched one wide and then stepped out to drive Shakib inside out for a powerful cover drive followed by a pull for two more fours to quickly take India past 100 and switch the momentum. When India were 34 away, Shakib brought on pace for the first time in the day. After conceding a four down the leg side, Khaled Ahmed nearly created a chance with Ashwin’s thick edge past a diving gully fielder but that also went for four. Taijul came back on, Mehidy tried going around the wicket and Bangladesh hoped maybe lack of bounce would get them an opening, but nothing worked.Ashwin quickly scored 31 off the last 34 runs with the help of four fours and a six and kept Bangladesh still searching for their first Test win against India.

Everton eyeing ambitious off-field appointment alongside Kinnear at Leeds

Everton have been linked with a move for Leeds United chief executive Angus Kinnear, and it looks as though the Friedkin Group aren’t stopping there.

Latest Everton news

According to a recent rumour, the Blues have identified Kinnear as a leading option to bring in behind the scenes, having no doubt been impressed with the job he is doing at Elland Road currently.

While a deal to bring him to Goodison Park is far from done, discussions have been held between the two English clubs, as they look to come to an agreement that benefits all parties.

Everton's home stadium, Goodison Park.

In terms of other Everton-related transfer news, the Blues have been linked with a move for Tammy Abraham in the summer transfer window, with the Englishman currently on loan at AC Milan from Roma. It remains to be seen if Dominic Calvert-Lewin will leave Goodison Park at the end of the season, but a replacement needs to be lined up if he does.

Meanwhile, Burnley centre-back Maxime Esteve has been mentioned as a potential successor to Jarrad Branthwaite, should he depart soon. The 22-year-old has been an immense performer for the Clarets this season, ensuring that they have conceded just nine goals in the Championship prior to this weekend’s action.

Friedkin eyeing big appointment for Everton

According to a fresh update from Everton News, the Friedkin Group want to make ambitious backroom changes at Everton, with the club’s owners “ready to put in place a new ‘Footballing executive team’ which will include a CEO and a new sporting director.”

David Weir is mentioned as an option to come in from Brighton, but the Seagulls “have played down his willingness to leave the South Coast”, and Dan Ashworth and Dougie Freedman are also mentioned as sporting director targets to come in and work alongside Kinnear.

Dan Ashworth for England.

It is so encouraging to see Dan Friedkin looking to take Everton in the right direction, in what feels like such a crucial period in the club’s history, as they prepare for life at a new stadium.

For too long under Farhad Moshiri, the club didn’t feel like it was running smoothly, but these reported plans about a ‘Football executive team’ are exciting.

One report has claimed that Everton are in advanced talks to bring Weir back to the club, following a great playing career there, but Ashworth would represent an intriguing alternative.

While the Englishman quit his role at Manchester United in no time at all last year, that could easily be more of a slight on Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who Ashworth may simply have struggled to work with. He is a highly thought of sporting director who excelled at Newcastle United, playing a key role in the Magpies getting back into the Champions League under Eddie Howe.

Similarly, Freedman is also making waves at Palace, bringing in the likes of Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi and Michael Olise in recent years, so he stands out as another great option, and it looks as if ambitious moves for Ashworth or Freedman are ones to watch.

Cummins will miss final Test too, Smith to lead Australia in Ahmedabad

Cummins is still due to lead Australia in the ODI series, but a decision on his participation in that series hasn’t been taken yet

Pat Cummins will not return to India for the final Test in Ahmedabad, and Steven Smith will lead Australia again as they seek to level the Border-Gavaskar series.Cummins left after the second Test in Delhi to be with his seriously ill mother, Maria, who has been placed in palliative care, and he has opted to remain at home. The team was in contact with Cummins after the nine-wicket victory in the Indore Test, just their second Test win in India since 2004.Ahmedabad will be the fourth time Smith has stood in for Cummins since they came together in the new leadership structure before the 2021-22 Ashes, but Smith insisted he had no interest in another full-time go at the captaincy.Related

“My time is done. It’s Pat’s team now,” he said after Indore. “I’ve obviously been able to stand in this week, obviously in tough circumstances with Patty going home. Our thoughts are still with him back home as well.”However, he did talk about how much he enjoyed the challenge of captaining in India where he feels every move made in the field could have an impact on the match.”It’s a game of chess, every ball means something,” he said. “It’s probably my favourite place in the world to captain. You think back home in Australia and generally you’re playing with a third slip or putting a third slip to cover or your square leg up or back or something like that. There’s not too much that sort of goes on with it.”But [in] this part of the world, you have to be really proactive. Every ball is an event and therefore can dictate what happens after, which is something that I really love and you’ve got to be ahead of the game.”Cummins is due to captain the ODI squad for the three-match series which follows the Tests, but a decision on his participation in that is yet to be taken. He had already opted out of this year’s IPL due to the heavy international schedule. Australia will play the World Test Championship final in early June, against either India or Sri Lanka, before the five-match Ashes series – the six Tests will take place in two months.

Man City plot move to sign "special" Bayern star who Pep thinks is perfect

As Manchester City look to commence their summer rebuild, they’ve reportedly set their sights on a Champions League star who those at the Etihad already know all about.

Man City transfer news

For the first time in a decade, the Citizens are in need of an overhaul. Whilst the amount of injury setbacks that they’ve suffered has shocked many, those injuries have simply been a consequence of their success on all fronts in the last four seasons. Not even Pep Guardiola’s side can outrun the eventual exhaustion of winning four Premier League titles in a row and a treble along the way, and they’re now suffering from that success.

What that success has done, however, is put them in a position to welcome some much-needed reinforcements this summer and, with that in mind, the Citizens have already reportedly set their sights on one target.

According to reports in Spain, Manchester City are now plotting a summer move to sign Michael Olise from Bayern Munich in what would see the winger return to the Premier League just one season after leaving Crystal Palace.

Man City send officials to watch £6m gem who Arsenal scouts are tracking

City are looking to beat their Premier League rivals in the race to sign a young midfielder.

ByBrett Worthington Mar 3, 2025

The winger has only kicked on at Bayern Munich in what should come as little surprise. The Frenchman is as talented as they come and whilst the likes of Jeremie Doku have struggled for end product at Manchester City, Olise has been firing on all cylinders in front of goal.

At just 23 years old, the best is yet to come from Olise, who may well find the form of his career back in English football, with Guaurdiola seeing him as a perfect fit in Manchester.

"Special" Olise would replace Doku

In many ways, Doku’s recent performance in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Premier League leaders Liverpool perfectly encapsulated the best and worst of his talent.

Whilst he ran Trent Alexander-Arnold ragged, it was ultimately the right-back who came out on top after the Belgian failed time and time again to produce the killer pass needed after an impressive take-on – much to City’s frustration. Mohamed Salah at the other end, meanwhile, was decisive without those take-ons.

Finding players who are both clinical and skilful is rare, but City are certainly looking in the right direction in search of that. Olise even showcased those very traits to silence the Etihad when he scored a 95th-minute penalty to secure a shock 2-2 draw for Palace against Manchester City last season.

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise

Since reaching new levels at Bayern – scoring 13 goals and assisting a further 12 in all competitions – manager Vincent Kompany has been full of praise for his summer signing.

The former Manchester City captain told reporters earlier this season: “He’s a special talent. It’s a luxury at Bayern to have so many good players. Michael did very well.

“His start at FC Bayern couldn’t have been much better. He has to keep going. I haven’t got the feeling that he’s a player who feels much pressure. He just enjoys football.”

Can KKR's spinners trip up in-form Titans in their own backyard?

It remains to be seen if new signings Shanaka and Roy will feature immediately for their franchises

Sreshth Shah08-Apr-20233:39

Moody: Narine and Chakravarthy are key for KKR

Big Picture
Sunday begins with consistency meeting chaos in the afternoon game. Both teams have started IPL 2023 in the manner they ended IPL 2022 – Gujarat Titans winning two on the trot and Kolkata Knight Riders struggling one evening and buoyant the next. The Titans have been a gun chasing side over the last two seasons and if they win the toss at home, they are likely to chase again. In both their wins, their batters and pacers were in great touch. Mohammad Shami, Alzarri Joseph and Josh Little provide pace, skid, bounce and swing between them, Rashid Khan is back to taking wickets regularly, Hardik Pandya has made confident moves as captain, Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill are in terrific nick, and David Miller has brought his excellent form from South Africa to India. They start as clear favourites with home advantage on offer too.Related

KKR bring in Jason Roy as replacement player

The rise and rise of B Sai Sudharsan

The Knight Riders will have to show that their 81-run victory on Thursday night was no fluke. Their three spinners have impressed but their Indian-heavy top order has crumbled in both games. A 103-run partnership between Shardul Thakur and Rinku Singh bailed them out in their last match, but the lower order can’t always come to the team’s rescue, particularly against the Titans’ robust attack.Team news
Titans signed Sri Lanka white-ball captain Dasun Shanaka as Kane Williamson’s replacement earlier in the week. He is supposed to arrive in India over the weekend, but there’s no word yet on his availability.Jason Roy is expected to join the Knight Riders before the match and could potentially boost their top order with a direct entry in the XI. Litton Das will not join until their next match, though. Lockie Ferguson has moved from practicing bowling with a short run-up to now doing so with a longer run. His match fitness is unknown.Varun Chakravarthy has begun the 2023 season in excellent rhythm•BCCI

Toss and Impact Player Strategy
If the Titans bat first, then the left-arm seamer Little could be the Impact Player at the innings break, with him replacing a batter like Sudharsan or Vijay Shankar. If the Titans bowl first, the opposite is likely to happen.Probable bat-first XI: 1 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Sai Sudharsan, 4 Hardik Pandya (capt), 5 VIjay Shankar, 6 David Miller, 7 Rahul Tewatia, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Yash Dayal, 11 Mohammed Shami.Probable bowl-first XI: 1 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Sai Sudharsan, 4 Hardik Pandya, 5 David Miller, 6 Rahul Tewatia, 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Alzarri Joseph, 9 Josh Little, 10 Yash Dayal, 11 Mohammed Shami. If the Knight Riders bat first and suffer a collapse that needs them to lengthen their batting, they could risk bringing in Anukul Roy as a lower-order hitter who can also bowl some left-arm spin. Otherwise, they will prefer to replace a pure batter like Mandeep Singh at the halfway stage for Suyash Sharma. Mandeep’s own place in the XI is at risk with two poor returns and N Jagadeesan on the bench. If Knight Riders bowl first, Suyash is expected to exit for a batter at the end of his spell.Probable bat-first XI: 1 Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 2 Venkatesh Iyer, 3 Mandeep Singh/N Jagadeesan/Jason Roy, 4 Nitish Rana (capt), 5 Andre Russell, 6 Rinku Singh, 7 Shardul Thakur, 8 Sunil Narine, 9 Tim Southee/Lockie Ferguson/Vaibhav Arora, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Varun Chakravarthy.Probable bowl-first XI: 1 Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 2 Venkatesh Iyer, 3 Nitish Rana (capt), 4 Andre Russell, 5 Rinku Singh, 6 Shardul Thakur, 7 Sunil Narine, 8 Tim Southee/Lockie Ferguson/Vaibhav Arora, 9 Umesh Yadav, 10 Varun Chakravarthy, 11 Suyash Sharma.Alzarri Joseph is part of a potent Titans pace pack•Associated Press

Stats that matter With 96 runs in 40 balls, Russell has a strike-rate of 240 against Shami in T20s. But he struggles against Rashid: out four times in 38 balls with an average of only 13.50. Hardik has never been dismissed by Narine in six innings, scoring 56 runs with a strike-rate of 151.35. Rashid (533) and Narine (481) are the highest spin-bowling wicket-takers in T20 history. Since 2021, Miller has hit 59 sixes in the slog (last four) overs of T20s. Only Tim David (89) has hit more sixes than Miller in this phase.Pitch and conditions
The Titans comfortably chased a target of 180 in the tournament opener in Ahmedabad, and a par score would be in that range given the big ground dimensions, which can convert mis-hits to dismissals in the deep. Ahmedabad has both red-soil and black-soil pitches, and the Titans may prefer playing on the red-soil pitch that typically provides less turn, against a spin-heavy Knight Riders attack. The weather is set to be hot and sunny.

Newcastle could now sign £40m+ star who has just fallen out with teammates

Seeking attacking reinforcements, Newcastle United could now sign a striker worth over £40m by taking full advantage of his recent fallout with teammates in what has been a nightmare period.

£40m+ star could replace Isak

With Alexander Isak set to be at the centre of a transfer scramble this summer, it’s no surprise that Newcastle are reportedly seeking attacking additions just in case. The Swede is one of the most impressive strikers in Europe, which could yet see his price tag rise to £150m. That may not stop the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal from making their moves, however, such is their desperation for such a clinical forward.

Of course, there would also be some benefits from cashing in on Isak. By selling the former Real Sociedad man for around £150m, PIF’s full spending power would be unleashed from the chains of PSR, which have forced Newcastle to spectate several hefty deals rather than act in the last two transfer windows.

Once unleashed, the Magpies could be a frightening prospect on the hunt for the reinforcements that Eddie Howe has so desperately needed at times throughout the current campaign.

With that said, those in Tyneside will already be smelling blood around one particular target. According to Sport BILD, as relayed by Sports Witness, Newcastle could now sign Victor Boniface from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth €50m (£42m) this summer following a nightmare few weeks for the Nigerian.

1/8 duels won: Howe must be worried after Newcastle star's worst display yet

Newcastle won at the London Stadium ahead of this weekend’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 11, 2025

Since Al-Nassr ditched the chance to sign the forward in January – instead sealing a move for Jhon Duran – Boniface has fallen out with recent arrival Emi Buendia and, to make matters worse, been involved in a car crash having earlier filmed himself driving at 140km/h.

A growing problem at Leverkusen, the Bundesliga champions could decide to show the 24-year-old the door – leaving Newcastle to take full advantage.

Newcastle should take Boniface gamble

Although his recent discipline struggles should spark plenty of concern, Boniface is one worth taking a gamble on if Isak departs this summer. For £42m, the Magpies could replace their star striker and have plenty of money left in the bank to improve the rest of Howe’s squad in pursuit of Champions League qualification next season.

Whilst his actions have been unsavoury in recent weeks, the numbers speak for themselves. Boniface has been as clinical as ever whenever he’s had the chance to start for Xabi Alonso’s side – scoring seven goals from 6.9 expected goals.

It wasn’t so long ago that the Nigerian found himself at the centre of the Spaniard’s praise either. The Bayer Leverkusen boss told reporters earlier this season: “He has many qualities that could make him as formidable as Drogba.

“His strength and the difficulties he creates for defenders are remarkable. He’s exceptional in tight spaces and thrives around the box. But he needs to be more assertive in attacking the box when opportunities arise.”
