Ben Stokes rues Old Trafford rain after 'pretty much perfect' performance

England captain proud of team’s attempts to force pace, targets squared series at The Oval

Ben Stokes believes England did “literally everything we possibly could” to force a result in the drawn fourth Ashes Test at Emirates Old Trafford, delivering a “pretty much perfect” performance in a game they “completely and utterly” dominated.England led by 275 runs on first innings after winning the toss, bowling Australia out for 317 before racking up 592 in 107.4 overs, and led by 61 runs heading into the final day with Australia five wickets down in their second innings. But after rain had limited the fourth day’s play to 30 overs, it forced a total washout on Sunday, denying England the opportunity to push for victory and leaving Australia 2-1 up heading into the final Test at The Oval next week – thereby retaining the Ashes urn.”The cricket we got in, in this game, was potentially an opportunity for a team to play it safe; to wait and see what the outcome might be,” Stokes said. “We didn’t do that. We definitely didn’t shy away from what we needed to do.”We’re always putting our front foot forward and trying to press the game as hard as we possibly could. As a captain, that’s something that makes me very proud as a leader of the ten other guys out there. It’s just unfortunate that we managed to get three hours in over the last two days.”The draw was the first of Stokes’ tenure as permanent captain, after 12 wins and four defeats in his first 16 Tests in full-time charge. “I think it’s the first draw for us, through no fault of our own,” he said. “We try and take the positive out of these things. We did literally everything we possibly could.”The weather didn’t help us and we can’t change that. It’s a tough pill to swallow, knowing that’s the reason we sit here with a draw, but we’ve done everything we possibly could in the hours of play we managed to get. We were completely and utterly dominant throughout the hours of play we had. It’s a shame, but, oh well.”Ben Stokes believes his team have “already done wonders” for Test cricket in England•Getty Images

When asked to compare how he felt in Manchester to his emotions after England’s defeats in the first two Tests at Edgbaston and Lord’s, Stokes said: “I think they’re completely different.”We obviously played some brilliant cricket in those games, [but] we played some cricket that we knew we could have been better at. But in this game I can’t actually look back and think, ‘We could have been better there’, because we were pretty much perfect throughout the whole game.”Bowling Australia out and then scoring the runs that we did at the pace that we did – I can’t really say we got anything wrong about this game, to be honest. It is tough to say we ended up with a draw when we’ve dominated the cricket that we’ve managed to get in.”Related

Pat Cummins: 'Good to retain Ashes but work to do for next week'

Australia retain the Ashes, but can they close out the series?

England can no longer win the series outright, but can deny Australia a first away Ashes win since 2001 by beating them at The Oval in the fifth Test – just as they did four years ago – which starts on Thursday.”It’s very similar to 2019, when we had to go to The Oval and win to draw the series,” Stokes said. “We’ll have to get over the disappointment of today and then focus on that game. It is a massive game for us and 2-2 sounds a lot better than 3-1.”The mentality and mindset within the dressing-room is to go out and win. Go back to the Pakistan series, where we could have taken it easy in that last game knowing we’d won the series but we didn’t. We still went out with the same mentality of how we wanted to play our cricket.”Every time we walk out on the field, that’s all I encourage the players to do: just concentrate on what you need to do as an individual to influence a game in the right way. If it doesn’t happen, you’ve still got an opportunity to do that in a different way or a different session. Everything we do is to try and be positive and get a result for England.”Stokes acknowledged that a decider at The Oval would have been “a very, very special week in the history of English cricket” but said that his team have “already done wonders” for the sport across the country.”It would have elevated everything that the series has already done for Test cricket, especially in England,” he said. “But I think what we’ve managed to do, up until today anyway, has already done wonders for cricket in England.”I think we’ll still have the support that we have done throughout the series next week. We’ll be treating it as every other game and I hope the support we get will still be there or thereabouts, as if it was 2-2.”

Weakened Sri Lanka bowling under pressure in Naagin derby

Both sides are missing key players, and their bench strengths will be tested as Group B gets underway in Pallekele

Big picture – SL, Bangladesh grapple with player absences
Okay, cards on the table, Sri Lanka aren’t in good shape.Sure, they haven’t been consistently great in quite some time, but these are the defending Asia Cup champions at the end of the day, not to forget that they clean-swept the World Cup Qualifier a few months ago. Technically, this is still that team. Technically. But injuries have decimated Sri Lanka’s bowling attack. The list of those unavailable currently reads Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Kumara, Dilshan Madushanka and Wanindu Hasaranga. For context, that’s the three first-choice seamers – all capable of speeds in the 145kph region – and their star legspinner, who just completed as dominant an all-round franchise display as you’re likely to see, in the Lanka Premier League.Related

Litton Das ruled out of Asia Cup, replaced by Anamul Haque

Sri Lanka still have the excellent Maheesh Theekshana to call on, though, while their back-up seamers, while not as express as the aforementioned walking wounded, can be relied upon to do a job. The issue, however, is that they now have to rely primarily on their batters to win matches, which they have lately struggled with even at the best of times (read World Cup Qualifier). As for Bangladesh, Litton Das has been ruled out on the eve of the tournament, while they have had their fair share of off-field drama with the will-he-won’t-he captaincy saga involving Tamim Iqbal. They are coming into this game on the back of a hard-fought home-series defeat to Afghanistan, but they’ve otherwise been a hugely impressive ODI force of late.Their unit as a whole has achieved a pleasing blend of youth and experience in recent times. The conditions in Pallekele are also likely to suit their spinners. In that sense, even though Sri Lanka might have the home advantage, the latest edition of the Derby (look it up, if you must) might just see Bangladesh coming in as marginal favourites.Form guide

Mehidy Hasan Miraz is still just 25, but it definitely feels like he’s been around for ages, and in a sense he has, having made his debut in 2016. While it was his simple yet effective offspin that first caught the attention, it’s his more recent exploits with the bat that have earned him a permanent spot. Now a bonafide all-round option coming in lower down the order, Mehidy offers his side a great deal of balance, and his match-winning century against India in December showed his ability to be a genuine gamechanger.Kusal Mendis didn’t have a great LPL, while his performances in the World Cup Qualifier didn’t necessarily set the world alight. The past year or two, on the whole, has been a fruitful period for the now 28-year-old, though, especially in T20Is where he has showcased a bolder approach at the top of the order. In ODIs, he has tended to anchor the innings early on before looking to cut loose. As such nearly every formidable Sri Lanka ODI batting performance in recent times has coincided with an in-form Mendis. With a second-string bowling unit to play with, Mendis will be key to any Sri Lankan success.4:03

Team news
Kusal Perera is in contention for a place in the starting XI, having recovered from a case of Covid-19. However, he last played an ODI over two years ago. With Hasaranga not available, Dushan Hemantha is the sole legspin option, but Dunith Wellalage’s batting could see him get the nod instead.Sri Lanka XI (probable): 1 Dimuth Karunaratne, 2 Pathum Nissanka, 3 Kusal Mendis (wk), 4 Sadeera Samarawickrama, 5 Charith Asalanka 6 Dhananjaya de Silva, 7 Dasun Shanaka (capt), 8 Dushan Hemantha/Dunith Wellalage, 9 Maheesh Theekshana, 10 Binura Fernando, 11 Kasun RajithaAnamul Haque has replaced Litton. But there is an outside chance that Tanzid Hasan replaces Litton in the XI and makes his ODI debut. A knee niggle could keep Mustafizur Rahman out.Bangladesh XI (probable): 1 Mohammad Naim, 2 Tanzid Hasan/Anamul Haque, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 4 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 5 Towhid Hridoy, 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 7 Afif Hossain, 8 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Hasan Mahmud, 11 Shoriful IslamPitch and conditions
During the LPL, most pitches proved to be quite two-paced, and Pallekele was no different, with bowlers rewarded for varying their pace. On occasion, however, batting did get easier, and better, under lights. In terms of the weather, it’s largely expected to be hot and humid and there is a chance of rain.Stats and trivia Bangladesh have played just one ODI in Pallekele, against Sri Lanka in 2013, which they won Sri Lanka have the second-highest win percentage against Bangladesh – 81.63% – in ODI cricket. Only Pakistan have a higher percentage (86.48). However, Sri Lanka have lost four of their last ten games against Bangladesh

Conway and Ravindra hand England a thumping to kick off World Cup

Henry and Santner were the stars with the ball, keeping England in check in the first half of a typically stirring New Zealand performance

Vithushan Ehantharajah05-Oct-20231:29

Kumble: Ravindra reminds me of a young Yuvraj Singh

Revenge for the final of the 2019 World Cup was never going to come in the first match of the 2023 edition. But a nine-wicket demolition of England in the Ahmedabad curtain-raiser will have provided New Zealand ample satisfaction. The defending champions have been battered, comprehensively, wearing what might end up being one of the most emphatic beatings of the tournament.Pursuit of a target of 283 came with 82 balls to spare thanks to a brutal southpaw combination, with an unbeaten 152 from Devon Conway and an unbeaten 123 from Rachin Ravindra – ODI centuries number five and one, respectively. The former broke Martin Guptill’s 88-ball record for the fastest 50-overs World Cup century by a New Zealander, bringing his up in just 83, before Ravindra went one ball better to become the country’s youngest centurion in a global tournament at 23. Together, these two Wellington teammates now possess the Blackcaps’ highest partnership in the tournament’s history. That their unbroken 273-run stand began at the start of the second over when Sam Curran snared Will Young down the leg side for a first-ball duck made it all the more remarkable. That was the last moment of jeopardy before Kiwi dominance prevailed, in the fastest chase of a 250-plus target in World Cup history. They even blitzed the boundary count 38 to 27.The defending champions looked to have reached a competitive total at the halfway stage. Joe Root’s 77 stitched together a total of 282 for 9 after Tom Latham had won the toss and opted to bowl first. Yet it was a stuttering effort, thanks largely to Matt Henry’s 3 for 48 dovetailing with 2 for 37 from Mitchell Santner, whose 10 overs did not feature a single boundary. The last player to manage that against England was Kuldeep Yadav in July 2018.Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway put on an unbroken 273 for the second wicket•Getty Images

Conway’s quality in this format is rubber-stamped, and this was his fourth century this year alone, the previous coming in a similarly one-sided affair against England in Cardiff at the start of September. For Ravindra, this was his first international hundred outright, in a first go in the top five. He had only previously passed fifty once. His presence in the XI was as much on bowling balance as to give Kane Williamson a little longer to recover from a ruptured ACL sustained six months ago in the opening match of the IPL. It felt particularly neat that an expensive 10 overs with the ball, costing 76, was covered when he reached the same number of runs off 60 deliveries.Conway put England on alert when driving the first ball of the chase through point off Chris Woakes. But Curran’s early strike, along with his two maidens from the get-go, suggested there was something to work with. By the 35th over, Curran was merely fodder for Conway’s whims, as he smashed the seamer for 20, starting with a six heaved over wide long-on before a brace of fours through despairing fielders. His 22nd and final boundary – a slapped four through square leg off Liam Livingstone in the next over – took him to 150 off 119.Ravindra’s shotmaking was crisp from the off, notably when crunching a flat six over square leg from a Mark Wood delivery that registered 148kph, bringing up the team fifty in just 6.5 overs. Wood’s first over would go for 17 and his first three for 38. Just like that, one of Jos Buttler’s difference-makers was rendered obsolete. England calling upon Adil Rashid, the fifth bowler, after 12 overs, spoke of the need for a shift in fortunes, with the 100 up with a single taken off the legspinner’s first delivery. It never came.1:01

What makes Santner so effective?

Even the guest appearance of Ben Stokes during the first drinks break on 17 overs could not bring about a shift. The hero of Lord’s was only there to offer advice, missing out on selection with a hip issue. That he is at this tournament in a non-bowling capacity means he’d have hardly made a difference. But even one of his miracles might have only reduced the margin of defeat.England’s efforts with the bat had various jumping-off points for a score greater than the 282 for 9 they managed from 50 overs. For the first time in an ODI innings, all 11 batters reached double figures, yet with just one fifty-plus stand – a 70 between Root and Buttler, ending with the latter’s failed attempt at guiding Henry down to third.Henry’s first strike was to remove Dawid Malan, just reward for an outstanding opening spell. However, Jonny Bairstow at the other end was the opener causing more concern. The second ball of the match, from Trent Boult, was flicked beyond square leg for the first of England’s six sixes, with Bairstow accounting for 31 of the 50 accrued in the powerplay.Bairstow’s demise at the end of the 13th over was the start of a series of speed traps laid down by New Zealand’s slower bowlers. Santner led that front, tempting Bairstow into going over the top of cover only to misdirect a lofted drive to Daryl Mitchell at long-off.1:22

Steyn: ‘NZ follow the basics, but they do it really, really well’

The left-arm spinner would eventually return 10 boundary-less overs, varying his pace, particularly at the back end of his spell when Woakes was tempted into a heave that looped to backward point. Given the absence of established bowling options in Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee and Ish Sodhi, Santner proved an important focal point. His thriftiness meant Ravindra could get through 10 overs. And though they were expensive, he was gifted the wicket of Harry Brook early on. Having been thrashed to the midwicket boundary three times in a row – the last one a six – the fourth delivery, equally short, equally there for punishing, was miscued to Conway a few feet in front of the sponge.Perhaps the most unexpected bonus came through Glenn Phillips. An intermittent wicketkeeper and full-time dynamo in the outfield prised out two batters in the first seven balls of three overs. Moeen Ali, sent in at No.5 ahead of Buttler to counter the dual left-arm-spin threat, had his stumps rearranged by part-time offspin. A bigger prize would follow for the Blackcaps’ own Swiss Army knife when he managed to nutmeg Root and strike leg stump.Root was attempting a reverse paddle, in keeping with the fact that all five of his boundaries came behind the wicket. The first was the most bombastic – the patented reverse-lap skying Boult over the keeper for six – in what was otherwise a sensible knock of minimal risk. The reverse-sweep brought Joe Root plenty of success as well as his eventual downfall•AFP/Getty Images

The half-century came from 57 deliveries, a return to form for a player who just last month averaged 9.75 at home against the same opponents across a four-match series. And when Buttler arrived with his usual impetus, this fifth-wicket stand looked to be ideal for the situation at hand.Alas, both were gone by the start of the 42nd over, when Root was the second to fall in a collapse of 4 for 31. The final pair of Wood and Rashid managed to fashion an unbroken 30 – England’s highest 10th wicket stand in seven years. And yet, for all their endeavour, they were made to look more than 100 runs short. In the process, their pride and net run rate took a battering. The last time they conceded more than their 81 for 1 in their first 10 overs came at the hands of a Brendon McCullum-inspired Blackcaps pilfering 116 against them way back in 2015. And while they are a long way from the pedestrian team they were then, this was a defeat with flashes of those dark ages.

Stokes smokes England-record 182 to beat New Zealand by 181 runs

Malan makes 96 while adding 199 for third wicket, before Woakes, Livingstone seal rout

Matt Roller13-Sep-2023

Ben Stokes brought up his century from 76 balls•Getty Images

If there were any doubts about his readiness to play 50-over cricket after 14 months in ODI retirement, Ben Stokes laughed them off at the KIa Oval. He belted his fourth century in the format off 76 balls, then pushed on to claim the highest score in the format by an Englishman with 182 off 124 to set up a crushing victory over New Zealand.Stokes walked out in the third over with Trent Boult swinging the new ball and England in trouble at 13 for 2, but shared a third-wicket stand worth 199 in 165 balls with Dawid Malan. He launched a brutal assault on Lockie Ferguson, looting 56 runs off the 30 balls he faced from him; all told, Ferguson’s nine overs cost 80.Stokes started frantically, charging down the pitch and skipping outside leg stump to give himself room to play over the off side. He had 13 off 19 when Ferguson came into the attack and immediately looked to take him on, hitting three boundaries in four balls – one via a thick leading edge – in Ferguson’s second over. That was enough to get Stokes going, and thereafter he played at a similar tempo to the one he adopted during the Ashes earlier this summer: prodded and scuffed singles interspersed with calculated, dismissive swipes into the stands. The pick of the bunch, a skip-down-and-swing off Glenn Phillips, was caught in the second tier of the Pavilion. As he battled his knee injury, Stokes opted to stand and deliver. He crunched nine sixes, including six in his final 31 balls. When he holed out to square leg, attempting to hit a tenth, the sell-out crowd stood to applaud the hero of England’s 2019 World Cup triumph, no doubt imbued with the belief that he could yet inspire them to a successful defence of their title in India.”It’s good to come back in after a while out and put a big contribution into us winning the game,” Stokes said. “Today was good for me personally, just to get familiarity again with how 50-over cricket goes. We lost a few quick wickets and I wanted to go out and put them under a bit of pressure. There were a couple of times I had to check myself because I looked up and there were still 23-24 overs left… you have way more time than you think.”I didn’t really know [about the record] until the bloke on the tannoy announced it – then I got out next ball,” he said. “There were a couple of stages where I was scoring quite freely and felt like I wanted to keep going and going and going… in 50-over cricket, we always want to go out and put on big scores but [it was a case of] realising how much more time I had.”Stokes spent the start of New Zealand’s innings off the field, though insisted his knee is “getting better and better”. He said: “I just needed a little bit of treatment. Test matches are longer, but you get a break; one-day games, you don’t get that. It’s just different, but these first three games have been good.”New Zealand’s nominal attempt to chase 369 quickly turned into glorified middle practice. Chris Woakes bowled eight overs on the reel from the Pavilion End, finishing his opening spell with 3 for 31 and ending the game as a contest; Phillips, who made a career-best 72, was the only batter to reach 30 as New Zealand folded for 187.While Stokes took centre stage, this might have been the day that England’s World Cup squad worked itself out. With Jason Roy ruled out for a third consecutive ODI after suffering his second back spasm in six days, Malan returned from paternity leave and took his chance. His 96 off 95 balls was his second half-century of the series and his ninth 50-plus score out of 20 in ODIs.Malan appeared to be the spare batter when England named their provisional 15-man squad a month ago. After being dropped by Trent Rockets in the Hundred and a scratchy T20I series, Malan’s spot looked vulnerable – not least with Harry Brook, who missed the initial cut, pitching an irresistible case.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

But it now feels increasingly likely that Malan will feature on October 5, when England play New Zealand in the opening game of the World Cup in Ahmedabad, quite possibly as Jonny Bairstow’s opening partner. And if Malan is pencilled in for that role, Brook might well edge Roy to the remaining batting spot in the squad, given his versatility and Roy’s patchy fitness record. After England’s victory at the Ageas Bowl on Sunday, Jos Buttler and his players spoke “about freeing ourselves up… trying to get back to being even more positive, even more aggressive”. Malan and Stokes responded accordingly, bringing up a 100-run stand in 15.1 overs; Malan attacked the new ball, with six crisply-struck boundaries inside the first 10 overs.Malan was typically strong on the pull, twice nailing Ben Lister through square leg for four, and raced into the 80s by flogging Kyle Jamieson over long-on. He strangled Boult down the leg side after getting a little stuck as three figures approached, but at 212 for 3 after 30.1 overs, he had laid the ideal platform.England couldn’t convert it into the 400-plus score that seemed inevitable, leaving 11 balls unused as their lower order collapsed. Buttler sparkled briefly for 38 off 24 but Stokes’ dismissal in the 45th over triggered a slide of 5 for 20; Boult, the pick of the New Zealand attack, claimed a sixth ODI five-for by rearranging Gus Atkinson’s stumps. There was some mitigation for New Zealand with the ball. With Mitchell Santner jarring his knee at the Ageas Bowl on Sunday and Ish Sodhi rested, they relied on two allrounders in Phillips and Rachin Ravindra to bowl spin, while neither Jamieson nor Lister will feature for them in the World Cup, barring injury. But Stokes ensured that England took advantage of their weakened attack, scoring 59 off the 35 balls of spin he faced – including three huge sixes which rendered Ravindra unusable after his second over. It came as a surprise when he eventually fell to Lister – but not before breaking Roy’s record for the highest innings by an Englishman in ODIs.With Adil Rashid and Mark Wood both kept in cotton wool – or, at least, in luminous green bibs in the substitutes’ dugout – England were also without their two main bowlers in their defence, but it hardly mattered: Woakes had Will Young caught behind and Henry Nicholls miscuing to square leg, and his inswinger rattled Tom Latham’s stumps.Devon Conway looked out of sorts for his 9 off 18 before he fell lbw to Reece Topley to leave New Zealand 37 for 4, before Sam Curran had Daryl Mitchell caught behind and Moeen Ali bowled Ravindra with an arm ball. Phillips launched a couple of futile sixes as the asking rate soared; by the time he was lbw on review for the first of Liam Livingstone’s three wickets, The Oval was half-empty.
