ECB influence in spotlight at Yorkshire, as timing of data deletion comes under scrutiny

Focus on Lord Patel’s role as chairman, as CDC hearing enters concluding week

A new dossier of evidence has come to light that is expected to cast doubt on the validity of Yorkshire’s guilty plea at the ongoing racism hearings, amid claims that Lord Patel – the outgoing chair – was unduly influenced by the ECB during his time in the role.Following negotiations with the ECB, Yorkshire pleaded guilty to four amended charges, as opposed to the original six levelled against them, and as a consequence, chose not to be represented at this month’s hearings at the International Arbitration Centre in London. One of those four charges related to the “the deletion and destruction of documents” pertaining to Azeem Rafiq’s claims of institutional racism at the club, with Yorkshire’s original statement on the matter claiming that this act had occurred in a “time period prior to the appointment of Lord Patel”.According to the Daily Mail, however, evidence has emerged which casts doubt on this claim, with senior officials at the club insisting that the documents in question were still in Yorkshire’s possession in March 2022, more than four months after Lord Patel had taken over as chair. In response to the claims, Yorkshire issued a fresh statement on Sunday evening, in which it did not deny that the data deletion had taken place, but stopped short of specifying when.”Subsequent to the appointment of Lord Patel on November 5, 2021, it is understood that certain documents and emails created prior to his appointment – and relating to the allegations of racism and the club’s response to those allegations – were unable to be located,” the statement read.”We engaged independent specialists to investigate and we are informed that their conclusion was that emails and documents, held electronically by the club and in paper copy, had been irretrievably deleted from both servers and laptops and otherwise destroyed.”The hearing, which is due to be concluded this week, resumes in a private session on Monday prior to the closing speeches from the lawyers, including those acting for Michael Vaughan, who is the only person facing charges who has chosen to defend himself.Related

Vaughan regrets 'disgusting' tweets but denies making 'you lot' comment

On Friday, Lord Patel’s relationship with the ECB came under scrutiny from Christopher Stoner KC, Vaughan’s lawyer, particularly in light of a recent interview with the Eastern Eye, in which Patel claimed his decision to dismiss 16 members of Yorkshire’s back-room staff in December 2021 had come after “the ECB urged him to get rid of people”, but that “when the going got tough the ECB didn’t back him”.Meena Botros, the ECB’s director of legal and integrity, denied any knowledge of the ECB “urging Mr Patel to take action and sack those individuals”, but was pressed on the board’s ability, as the sport’s regulator, to remain independent of the actions taken by its member counties.”That’s just not what happened, is it?” Stoner asked. “It is what happened,” Botros replied. The issue of the data deletion has not yet been raised in the proceedings. However Vaughan, who appeared as a witness on Friday, told the hearing: “Whatever happens, this has a terrible look on the game.”He continues to deny Rafiq’s claim that he told a group of four Asian players, “there’s too many of you lot”, ahead of a Yorkshire fixture in 2009.”The comment I have been alleged to have said is a comment where a team-mate would not be able to perform to their maximum, and that’s not what I’m about,” Vaughan said.

In the latest role, he will work alongside interim coach Andre Coley, and Shai Hope and Rovman Powell, the newly appointed ODI and T20I captains respectively.”I look forward to catching up with the players, some who I played with and most I already know, as we seek to acquit ourselves well on what is expected to be a challenging tour of South Africa,” he said.Related

Charlotte Edwards Cup needs title sponsor urges Lancashire chief executive

Daniel Gidney says ECB must invest more in promoting women’s domestic competitions

Daniel Gidney, Lancashire’s chief executive, has called on the ECB to find a title sponsor and a standalone broadcast deal for the Charlotte Edwards Cup after his club’s investment in women’s cricket was rewarded with the award of Tier 1 status from 2025 in the revamped domestic structure.Lancashire have been major investors in Thunder in England’s regional competitions since 2020, with help from two sponsors in Hilton and Sportsbreaks.com. They will have a full-time squad of 15 professionals this year and travelled to Dubai and Bangalore last month, their third successive pre-season tour. They were among the counties pushing for a change in the domestic structure which would empower them to invest more in their women’s team and Gidney said that he was “absolutely thrilled” that Lancashire will host a Tier 1 side from next season. “I’ve always believed that if you are going to do this, you have to do it properly,” he told ESPNcricinfo.Related

To that end, Gidney believes the ECB must find a title sponsor for the Charlotte Edwards Cup – the regional T20 competition – and invest more in marketing games outside of the Hundred. The ECB have committed to investing around £19 million in women’s domestic cricket by 2027.”There is a lot of history of men’s sports sponsors wanting women’s competitions as an add-on,” Gidney said. “We’re now at a stage where the Charlotte Edwards Cup needs to be backed, it needs to have England players available, and it needs to be taken seriously. There were more people at our quarter-final at Blackpool last year than at Finals Day at New Road.”The Charlotte Edwards Cup falls under Sky Sports’ TV rights deal with English cricket, which runs from 2024-28, but the channel has rarely broadcast matches from the competition, which are instead largely available via free online live streams. Richard Gould, the ECB’s chief executive, said any changes will only be considered before the next rights cycle, which will start in 2029.”If we deliver on what we aim to deliver, that is a natural consequence of what we aim to do,” he said on Thursday at the launch of the ECB’s national tape-ball competition. “At the moment, we fall back on streaming platforms for much of our professional domestic cricket at county level and we’ll be doing the same for the women, but ultimately, that’s what we want to do.”While the three men’s county competitions all have headline sponsors, the women’s regional equivalents do not. Gould would not be drawn on sponsorship, saying: “I would not want to go into that at this point.” Gidney said: “This competition needs a title sponsor that is paying proper money, and we need to get it broadcast.”We shouldn’t just be giving assets away to people: it’s insulting to all of the women’s professional cricketers we have in the UK now. This is a proper sport that has real value. The top [level] of women’s elite sport in English cricket is the Hundred, but that’s not the only domestic professional cricket in town.”Gidney believes the move away from a regional structure funded predominantly by the ECB and towards a county model reflects the speed of commercialisation in women’s sport. “At the time the regional structure was introduced, it was all about accelerating performance, development of skills and professionalism,” he said.”But people underestimated the speed at which elite women’s professional sport has become commercialised: look at the amazing successes of the Lionesses, the Red Roses, sell-out games for Arsenal’s women at the Emirates Stadium, the Women’s Premier League. The money that has come in and the level of engagement from a new fanbase has been mad.”Deloitte put out a report to say that they believe in 2024, women’s elite sport will become a billion-dollar industry… you have to encourage innovation and generate commercial income to help grow women’s elite sport. We’re thrilled to be a successful Tier 1 club, but that comes with massive responsibility. I can’t now use it as an excuse that the ECB are holding me back.”Lancashire are building a new training base at Farington•Lancashire Cricket

Gidney believes that the tender process for Tier 1 teams has demonstrated which counties are “serious” about investing in women’s cricket. “I sat in one meeting and one CEO said, ‘if you get it and we don’t, you’re getting more revenue off the ECB.’ I said, ‘I’m astonished you’ve used the word ‘revenue’ in this context.’ The money that comes from the ECB is just a percentage of what has to be invested into the women’s programme to make it successful.”A few years ago, there was one non-Test match ground county that took a lot of money from the ECB for its academy. They spent £20,000 on the academy, and the rest on a Kolpak fast bowler. Authenticity is important. If you’re serious, you have to put your money and your actions where your mouth is, and I’d challenge anybody to say that Lancashire hasn’t done that in the last few years.”Thunder – who have appointed Chris Read, the former England wicketkeeper, as their coach ahead of the upcoming regional season – will play seven fixtures at Old Trafford this year, the most that any regional team will play at a men’s Test venue. The old away dressing room at the ground has already been converted into a home dressing room for the women’s team.Lancashire are also building a new facility at Farington, near Preston, which will become a training base for their men’s and women’s teams and will stage some first-team matches as well as second-team and pathway fixtures. But Gidney stressed: “Emirates Old Trafford is the home of Lancashire Cricket – for both our men and our women.”Old Trafford will also stage women’s international cricket again from 2025, more than a decade since its most recent fixture. Gidney wants to host Women’s T20 World Cup matches there in 2026: “We haven’t got a men’s Test match in 2026, so we are very hopeful about that.”

Top 1% for take-ons: Crystal Palace racing to sign "explosive" £30m forward

Crystal Palace are now in the race to sign an “explosive” forward, who is set to be targeted by a number of Premier League clubs this summer, according to a report.

Palace keen to bolster attacking options

Prior to the surprise 1-1 draw at Southampton, Palace had been on a five-game winning streak in all competitions, having really managed to kick on under the helm of Oliver Glasner after a slow start to the campaign.

However, given the level of the Eagles’ performances, a number of key players are being linked with moves away in the summer, which means a rebuilding job may be necessary, with a move for Lyon striker Georges Mikautadze being lined up.

Mikautadze could be brought in as a replacement for Jean-Philippe Mateta, amid rumoured interest from Manchester United, while Glasner is also keen to bolster his options out wide.

A concern for those at Selhurst Park…

FC Nordsjaelland winger Sindre Walle Egeli has been closely followed this season, ahead of a potential summer transfer swoop, however, there is also an alternative option from much closer to home.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Crystal Palace are now in the race to sign Liverpool winger Ben Doak, but there may be stiff competition for the winger’s signature, with Everton and AFC Bournemouth also keen.

Having impressed on loan at Middlesbrough this season, the Championship side could also make a move for Doak this summer, should they achieve their aim of promotion to the Premier League.

The Reds value the 19-year-old at £25m – £30m, and he is highly regarded at Anfield, but a departure could be possible this summer, given that the youngster will find it very difficult to usurp Mohamed Salah at right-wing.

"Explosive" Doak impressing in the Championship

Understandably, it is very difficult to challenge for Salah’s starting spot, which means the Scot has spent the current season out on loan at Middlesbrough, where he looked very impressive up until picking up a thigh injury.

The teenager picked up three goals and seven assists in the second tier for Boro, indicating he could soon be ready to make the step-up to the Premier League, while he also places highly on some key attacking metrics over the past year, most notably excelling at dribbling.

Not only that, but the forward has received high praise from former Liverpool man Danny Murphy, who said: “He is a super quick, explosive winger,”

“He gives you something so different because of his pace. He’s got amazing, explosive pace which could cause teams problems off the bench.”

Having excelled in the second tier, the next logical step is for Doak to sign for a Premier League club, and there is every indication he could be a success at Selhurst Park.

A tough test in Ligue 1 champions PSG awaits in the semi-finals, but their tails will surely be up after a potentially season-defining quarter-final tie.

“The feeling that we have is our reality, basically,” said Arteta on the mood around Arsenal after their triumph over Real Madrid.

“And in the feeling that I had before the game, when the players were transmitting and how prepared I could feel the team, that we are ready to compete against anybody. Now we have to continue to do that because I think we have some momentum now.

“Where we finished last year and the way we’re doing it this year, the teams with their eyes on us and the competition, it’s incredible. Big credit to [Madrid}, it was my first time as a coach in that dugout, and today I realised after three minutes in this stadium, anything is possible. They are specialists of creating such chaos and belief, and it’s very difficult to really understand what’s going on in the game and have certainty about how we controlled it. I think they showed a lot of maturity.”

Arsenal refuse to rule out signing Raheem Sterling permanently

Privately, Arsenal are making plans to build the squad further and provide Arteta with new wide attackers.

In the last week, Arsenal have repeatedly been linked with a move for Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman, not to mention Athletic Bilbao sensation Nico Williams, but there is also the matter of Raheem Sterling and his future at the Emirates.

It hasn’t exactly been a dream loan move from Chelsea for the Englishman, who’s seen precious little game time under his former City assistant coach, with Arsenal paying around £163,000-per-week of his £325,000-per-week salary during his temporary stint.

Berta would need to renegotiate contract terms and a fee with Chelsea to make his move permanent, but according to The Mail, as quoted by TEAMtalk, Arsenal have refused to rule out signing Sterling permanently and are yet to inform him of a final decision.

It would be a bizarre call by the north Londoners at this point, considering the 30-year-old boasts just one goal and five assists all season, but it is believed his stay may not be completely off the table, contrary to reports.

Hall of shame display: 4/10 Arsenal dud had his worst game all season v PSG

Well, that is about as deflating a night as Arsenal fans are going to experience this year.

Mikel Arteta’s side played host to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final last night, and instead of repeating the heroics of their game against Real Madrid, they seemed to just shrink.

It took all of three minutes for the visitors to take the lead through Ousmane Dembélé, and while the Gunners had a few chances of their own, the French side was undoubtedly the better team overall, taking a 1-0 lead back to Paris next week.

Arsenal's biggest underperformers against PSG

It would be fair to say that, apart from David Raya, none of the starters really stood out for the right reasons, but there were undoubtedly a few who stood out for all the wrong ones.

Indeed, with Thomas Partey forced to sit out through suspension after his daft yellow card in Madrid, Arteta’s side were forced to make some changes.

The most notable of which saw Mikel Merino play in midfield with Leandro Trossard playing as the centre-forward.

While it was Merino who saw a second-half goal ruled out for offside, Trossard had a poor night at the office and didn’t give Arsenal the out-ball his Spanish colleague has provided so well since becoming a makeshift striker.

Not only did the Belgian struggle to hold up the play but he was also missed a gilt-edged chance in the second half. Sent through on goal, the winger came close to equalising from close range but was denied fabulously by Gianluigi Donnarumma in the PSG net.

Gabriel Martinelli was another who missed a fine opportunity to score on what was a frustrating night for the Brazilian.

Following on from his winning goal at the Bernabeu earlier this month, there was hope, if not an expectation, that Martinelli would once again rewind the clock to his 22/23 form against PSG last night, but that just didn’t happen.

While he still fulfilled his defensive duties, the Brazilian wideman was a frustrating watch in attack, failing to make the most of the few chances created for him.

Moreover, with how often Hakimi got forward, there was certainly space for him to exploit, but he just couldn’t, and then, with almost the final kick of the game, he blazed the ball into row Z.

It might sound harsh, but it’s an opinion shared by the Independent’s Jamie Braidwood, who awarded the winger a 5/10 at full-time, and one backed up by his statistics.

For example, in his 95 minutes of action, the 23-year-old failed to find the back of the net with an expected goals figure of 1.08, took two shots off target, failed in 100% of his dribbles, missed two big chances, made just six passes, misplaced two of three crosses and was offside once.

However, as bad as Martinelli was, one of his teammates was even worse.

Arsenal's worst performer vs PSG

So, while a few other starters let themselves down somewhat last night, one quick glance at social media will reveal to you just who the worst offender was: Martin Odegaard.

It was a night that demanded a captain’s display, but instead of that, the Norwegian international put in what content creator Connor Humm described as a “hall of shame” performance.

The man who should be unlocking defences for the Gunners was instead completely ineffective for the vast majority of the game, and even when he did do something right on occasion, he’d only go and lose the ball or make the wrong pass right after.

It was possibly his most disappointing showing of the campaign yet, which is odd for someone who has undoubtedly been one of Arsenal’s best players of the Arteta era. However, since his ankle injury earlier in the campaign, he’s been way off it, scoring just five times in 2024/25.

While that sounds unfair, it is once again an opinion shared by the aforementioned Braidwood, who gave the 26-year-old a 4/10 match rating, while Humm further laid into him, saying that he was so anonymous at times that he may as well have just “sat in the stands.”

Unsurprisingly, such damning indictments of the captain are more than justified by his statistics, as in 89 uninspiring minutes, he amassed an expected assists figure of just 0.08 and no expected goals figure, he misplaced 100% of his crosses, didn’t take a single shot, failed in five of six dribbles and only won 25% of his duels.

Ultimately, last night was a massive disappointment for Arsenal, and if they are to overturn PSG’s one-goal advantage next week, then Odegaard is going to have to either put in a substantially improved display or be dropped entirely.

Indeed, his performance meant the team were practically playing with ten men at the Emirates and in truth, he may not be good enough to be a regular starter anymore.
