Wolves: Who may benefit from Neto’s injury?

With a swift click of the fingers, Pedro Neto’s outstanding season has come to a premature end.

The winger has enjoyed a scintillating breakthrough campaign at Wolves, putting a number of Premier League teams to the sword with red-hot dribbling and his devastating left-foot.

Neto is the club’s top scorer this season on five goals while he’s also Nuno Santo’s chief creator with six assists.

Those aren’t breathtaking numbers but it says a lot that at the age of just 21, he is the standout player in a top-flight side.

The Portuguese sensation has stepped up admirably in the absence of Raul Jimenez but like his Mexican teammate, he now faces a considerable period on the sidelines.

Wolves have had rotten luck with injuries this term and only last week Jonny was ruled out for the best part of a year with another ACL injury.

Neto won’t miss quite as much time, but he’s now set to miss the next six months with a significant injury to his knee cap that requires surgery.

On the chalkboard

The youngster will be a huge miss to Wolves between now and the end of the campaign and they will struggle to replace him.

After all, Nuno’s side have hardly been full of goals. Fabio Silva has only found the net three times this term while Willian Jose hasn’t scored at all.

They can take comfort from the fact that Adama Traore bagged his first Premier League goal since December 2019 in the win over Fulham but he has some way to go before rediscovering his best form.

One player Wolves could turn to is a player in their academy; Theo Corbeanu.

The 18-year-old hasn’t made a single first-team appearance for the club but he was on the bench in both of their FA Cup ties this term while he’s appeared among the substitutes in the top-flight on six occasions.

He is yet to make a breakthrough but evidently, the Canadian is very much on Nuno’s radar.

A winger or centre-forward by trade, Corbeanu possesses many of the qualities that have made Neto such a stand out fixture in the Wolves starting XI.

He is a tricky individual with the ability to find the net and create. This season the teenager has five goals and two assists for the U23 side.

The forward has made a dazzling impact in James Collins’ team and has earned eye-catching praise along the way: “He’s athletic, tall, can head it, can defend, can dribble past people and score, he can shoot, he can pass, he’s both footed, he’s got a bit of everything,” Collins admitted.

“Theo can be anything he wants to be. He’s an outstanding prospect,” he concluded.

We saw the ruthless impact Corbeanu can have when he was given an opportunity to shine in the EFL Trophy against senior opposition. During that competition, the attacker managed 1.8 key passes per game and 2.3 successful dribbles.

Only Pedro Neto (2) has managed more key passes a match in Wolves’ Premier League side this term while only Traore trumps the youngster in terms of take-ons.

Clearly, the Wolves prodigy has plenty to offer to the senior squad. With Neto now on the sidelines, this feels like the perfect chance to hand him a first-team berth.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Howe update

Crystal Palace and Celtic appear to be battling it out for Eddie Howe’s services.

And a number of Palace supporters have been reacting to an update regarding the club’s pursuit of the former Bournemouth boss.

According to a Palace source, as reported by Football Insider, Eagles chairman Steve Parish is leading the search for a potential successor to Roy Hodgson and feels Howe has a lot to offer.

Talks have been held and Parish wants the 43-year-old to change the mindset of the dressing room and play a more expansive style of football.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche and the available Frank Lampard are also on a three-man Selhurst Park shortlist.

Howe has had second thoughts on a move to Celtic after verbally agreeing to take over in Glasgow and is leading the way in Palace’s search for a new boss alongside Dyche.

Phillips wowed by Edouard claim

Speaking to Football Insider, pundit Kevin Phillips has been wowed by an alleged West Ham transfer development that the Hammers are ‘laying the groundwork’ to sign Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard this summer.

Indeed, as per the same outlet, West Ham are in pole position to sign the forward and they claim he could also be available for a fee in the region of £8-10 million.

Edouard has been a prolific goal scorer north of the border over the last few seasons, scoring 57 goals in 100 SPFL appearances for the Hoops (Transfermarkt).

Phillips wowed by alleged Edouard development

This has allegedly prompted GSB and West Ham to lay the groundwork for his possible capture, and Phillips believes securing him for around £10m would be a ‘huge bargain’ and a ‘no brainer’.

“For £10m it would be a huge bargain,” explained Phillips to Football Insider.

“If he is available for a fee in that region it will not just be West Ham sniffing around, there will be a lot of other clubs interested and that could drive up the price

“West Ham play good football and they have some fantastic players at the moment so they are an attractive proposition. They are a club heading in the right direction.

“If they can grab hold of Edouard for that sort of money, it is a no-brainer for me. If it works, you have a bargain and if it doesn’t you have not lost too much money. £10million is nothing for a player in this day and age.”

Transfer Tavern take

Given his impressive record and the fact he is still only 23-years-old, a fee in that region would indeed be huge value for money.

He is only likely to get better and has proven to be clinical in front of goal, meaning a West Ham swoop for that price is surely a certainty for the club.

David Moyes missed out on signing a striker in January, but if the Irons can pull off a cut price move for Edouard, you could say it was a masterclass to avoid rushing into an panic deal for an inferior player.

RFC: Gers set to miss out on Clarke-Harris

According to recent reports, Glasgow Rangers could miss out on the signing of Jonson Clarke-Harris this summer, as a Premier League side are lining up a move for the centre-forward.

The report by Football Insider claims that a recruitment source has revealed Sheffield United are targeting the Peterborough United centre-forward in the summer transfer window, as the relegated Premier League side look to add attacking reinforcements to their squad in a bid to return to the top flight on the first go.

Rangers have also been linked with a summer move for the 26-year-old – reportedly sending scouts to watch the striker in action for the League One side – with the club thought to be considering potential replacements for Alfredo Morelos, who could be set to leave Ibrox at the end of the season.

Transfer Tavern Take

Having only joined Peterborough from Bristol Rovers last summer, Clarke-Harris has certainly impressed in his short time at the club, scoring a quite remarkable 28 goals over his 42 League One appearances this season, as well as averaging a WhoScored match rating of 7.30, which would rank him as the Gers’ sixth-best performer.

As such, should Rangers indeed miss out on landing the striker this summer, it would represent something of a blow for Steven Gerrard and his side, who, even if Morelos does not end up leaving the club this summer, will undoubtedly be looking to strengthen his squad ahead of their Champions League campaign next season.

Ex-Man Utd man slams Martial

Keith Gillespie has told Football FanCast that Manchester United must buy a striker this summer, because Anthony Martial isn’t good enough to play through the middle for the club.

Martial has struggled at times this season, though he has been ruled out for the last five games with a knee injury.

Still, the France international has not managed to score a goal since February, when he netted twice in the 9-0 win over Southampton.

That means he has two goals in his last 10 games, while in total, he has scored four times in 22 league games in 2020/21.

Gillespie doesn’t think he’s anywhere near good enough to be the main striker at United.

And he has urged the club to make it a “priority” as the club look to strengthen the squad this summer.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, Gillespie has claimed that Martial has been given plenty of chances to become the out-and-out striker at Old Trafford, but simply hasn’t done enough to make it stick.

He said: “I think it is a priority, because nobody thinks Martial is the answer.

“Given his poor return this season in terms of goals, but also his performances anyway have been very poor at times.

“He’s been there a while, you want him to have that chance of being that number nine. And he hasn’t taken it.”

Martial did enjoy a decent season last term, scoring 23 goals in all competitions, but Gillespie thinks he has been in a real rut this season.

He added: “I think last season, he had a good season in terms of returns of goals that he scored, but this season just hasn’t happened for him.”

Liverpool Predicted XI vs Man Utd

Liverpool face a key game in terms of their UEFA Champions League aspirations as they get set to tackle great rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Regularly one of the standout fixtures of the Premier League season, the Reds certainly need a victory if they want to earn a place in the top four come the end of the campaign.

As it stands, the Merseysiders are seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea following their 1-1 draw against Newcastle United last time out so three points against the Red Devils would be key in their chase for Europe.

How many changes could Jurgen Klopp be tempted to make from the team that could only seal a point against the Magpies?

We are only predicting just two changes from the German for the trip to Old Trafford with no new injury concerns.

Alisson will remain in goal and will have an unchanged defence guarding him. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson will be selected on either side whilst Ozan Kabak will be partnered by Fabinho in the continued absence of Nathaniel Phillips.

The two alterations to the side will occur in the centre of the park.

Georginio Wijnaldum will remain but will be supported by £140k per week James Milner and Curtis Jones. The former will replace Thiago Alcantara , whilst the latter is likely to come in for Sadio Mane who, despite breaking his duck against Leeds United, is still not in the best of form.

The attack at Old Trafford should be three-pronged with Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino starting. Meanwhile, Diogo Jota, who scored two winning goals against Manchester United in his time with former club Wolverhampton Wanderers, will round off the front-line.

Kazim-Richards shines as Derby stay up

With Wayne Rooney’s Derby County side knowing that all they needed on Saturday was a victory to ensure their Championship survival, the Rams just about managed to get themselves over the line.

In what was a thrilling relegation shootout against Sheffield Wednesday, which saw Derby twice fall behind to Darren Moore’s side, two goals from Martyn Waghorn and one from Patrick Roberts secured a 3-3 draw for Rooney’s men, a result which was enough to keep them in the second tier after Rotherham drew with Cardiff City.

However, aside from the goalscorers, one Derby County player particularly impressed with his display against the Owls, that man being Colin Kazim-Richards.

Despite not finding the net with either of his two shots at goal, the centre-forward turned in a battling performance all over the pitch for the Rams. In terms of defending, the 34-year-old made two clearances, one tackle, and won two fouls for his side, demonstrating just how often he put his body on the line in the match.

Furthermore, the Turkey international also won a highly impressive nine duels – the most of any Derby player in the fixture. While the striker was not overly influential in the final third, as mentioned previously, he still recorded one key pass over his 90 minutes on the pitch.

Indeed, his overall Sofascore match rating of 6.7 is not truly reflective of the efforts of the 34-year-old.

While Waghorn and Roberts should both be praised for securing the vital result with their goals, the performance of a player Rooney dubbed a “leader” should not have gone unnoticed by Derby fans and his manager alike, as it was an important factor in ultimately saving the Rams’ season.

Sanchez confident Bielsa stays at Leeds

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Premier League manager Lawrie Sanchez has compared Marcelo Bielsa to Roy Hodgson, and believes the Argentine will stay at Leeds this summer.

Following his outstanding job since his appointment in 2018, the 65-year-old is a hugely popular figure with the Elland Road faithful.

Having guided Leeds back to the Premier League, Bielsa has already turned them into an extremely competitive side, with a top-half finish firmly in their sights despite losing to Brighton on Saturday.

But just like this time 12 months ago, there remains anxiety surrounding his future once again, with his current deal running out in two months.

Bielsa only signed a new one-year contract one day before the season got underway, and a repeat could be on the cards this time around.

However, reports do point towards the fan favourite remaining at Elland Road next season.

And despite the uncertainty, Sanchez has reassured Leeds supporters by saying that he expects the experienced manager to stay on.

He told Football FanCast:

“Where does he go? He isn’t going to another Premier League club. I think he’s a bit like Roy Hodgson. He wants to work, doesn’t he?

“He’s working now in the biggest league in his life, and as much as he comes across as not that interested in it, when people tap you on the shoulder back home and say, ‘I saw you on the TV the other week, your team did brilliant,’ it’s a massive boost to you.

“I think he will stay. They call him a maverick; he dances to his own tune, doesn’t he?

“So, if he did leave you would say ‘that’s Bielsa’. But if he were to stay involved in football and having come all the way to Leeds and having seen how well the team has done this year, and obviously they will be backed next year, so I can see him staying.”

West Ham fans fume over Jones and Matic claim

According to a report by Eurosport, via West Ham Central, the Irons are displaying an interest in Manchester United duo Nemanja Matic and Phil Jones – prompting much horror from many supporters on social media.

The Red Devils pair, making just 11 Premier League starts between them over 2020/2021, are now believed to be of interest to West Ham United as ‘transfer insider’ Dean Jones makes a claim.

Writing for Eurosport, the journalist says that West Ham are ‘checking out’ both Jones and Matic ahead of a possible swoop – but it is believed they will command over £120,000-per-week each.

Given the financial uncertainty caused by coronavirus, combined with West Ham’s desire to secure Lingard on a permanent deal and the signing of a new striker (Claret & Hugh), supporters have fumed in response to this alleged interest.

As Jones (29) and Matic (32) near the twilight phase of their careers and play in positions arguably now well stocked by West Ham, it’s little wonder Irons fans really aren’t impressed with this update.

Southampton fans slam Djenepo vs Leeds

Many Southampton fans have been left to slam the display of Moussa Djenepo in their 2-0 loss to Leeds United in the Premier League on Tuesday evening.

In a game played in front of thousands of supporters at St. Mary’s Stadium, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team did not really offer them too much, and in the end Marcelo Bielsa’s side strolled to victory with goals from Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts.

Djenepo did not have the best of games, losing out on six of his duels, as well as failing to record a single shot on target or successful dribble (Sofascore).

The Mali international also lost possession of the ball on five separate occasions, and never really made any impact on the match, recording fewer touches (32) than his own goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (39) (Sofascore).

These Saints slammed his performance on Twitter, with one supporter even going as far as to claim that the 22-year-old is a ‘Championship player’:
