Tottenham fans need to trust in Pochettino amid "Don’t sell Danny Rose" campaign

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur could sell Danny Rose this summer.

This is what numerous media outlets are reporting and, quite frankly, Spurs fans are absolutely furious.

The left-back, signed from Leeds United in 2007, has grown up in front of them. From his debut screamer against Arsenal to his participation in the club’s run to their first ever Champions League final, Rose has been through an awful lot during his time in north London.

He even asked to leave, and then took a brave stand by admitting to mental health issues, while constantly championing the cause of black footballers in the face of unspeakable racism, particularly while on England duty.

He was perhaps the best left-back in the league earlier in his Spurs career and formed a fearsome tandem with Kyle Walker on the other flank prior to the latter’s departure to Manchester City. He then recaptured some of that magic last season.

And so there is a hashtag: #DontsellDannyRose, one that was created earlier this month and has spiked once again in light of his omission from Tottenham’s pre-season tour in Asia.

Spurs fans want him to stay but the cards appear to be on the table, the river against them; Ben Davies, his deputy, signed a new contract last week and the links with Ryan Sessegnon, a full-back who can also play as a left winger, just won’t go away.

And that’s okay.

For months now, Spurs fans have been calling for the board to back Mauricio Pochettino after two fallow transfer windows.

Tanguy Ndombele came into the club for a record fee, while Jack Clarke came in and then rejoined Leeds United on loan.

But backing the manager doesn’t just come down to signing players. It also comes down to sanctioning sales, to undertaking “painful” rebuilds, as Pochettino alluded to.

To say, on the one hand, you are happy with Ndombele’s signing but then turn around and cry foul when Rose could potentially leave is hypocrisy of the highest order.

Now, of course, fans form an emotional attachment with players. It’s only natural, particularly when that one player burst onto the scene by scoring an absolute scorcher in a local derby. Rose is a cult hero at Spurs and one can understand why; he’s open, he’s honest, he’s everything modern footballers aren’t. He speaks his mind and is beloved for it.

But that can’t cloud reason.

Pochettino has always appeared to have a clear vision of what he wants to build at Spurs and fans, by and large, have bought into it. How could they not? Tottenham, a mid-table team in the 90s and early 2000s, are now perennial top-four finishers and reached the Champions League final last season for the first time in their history.

The former Southampton boss hasn’t done that through sheer luck; he’s been decisive and he’s been ruthless when he has needed to be.

Take a look back at the likes of Mousa Dembele, Ryan Mason and Aaron Lennon. All three were beloved by the fans in north London. All three were moved on at the right time.

Pochettino may well have spotted a weakness in Rose’s game, a flaw he believes is only going to get worse. Fans on Twitter simply don’t know.

If you want Spurs to reach finals, to win trophies and to become Premier League champions, eventually, then you have to buy into the manager’s vision.

And if that includes #sellingDannyRose, then so be it.

Spurs could finally have depth they so need after this summer

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Tottenham Hotspur could finally have the depth they need if they pull off their mooted summer transfer business.

Last season, Spurs reached the Champions League final and qualified for the competition via a top-four finish in the Premier League.

That, though, came about in spite of their investment instead of because of it.

For the majority of it, manager Mauricio Pochettino was forced to utilise a small squad.

A total of 16 players made 30 or more appearances for the club, with Christian Eriksen, the attacking midfielder, making 51, more than any other player.

But this summer, the club have already signed Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon to ease the burden on the central midfielders, and are eyeing up two genuinely fantastic attacking midfielders.

Giovani Lo Celso, of Real Betis, is the subject of negotiations, while Juventus star Paulo Dybala is also a target, per sources.

Sources have confirmed that Spurs genuinely believe a deal can be done for the latter in the final fortnight of the transfer window while remaining in talks for the former.

Of course, it remains to be seen if both would turn up to join Eriksen, who has expressed a willingness to leave, but even if he leaves, Spurs will suddenly have options.

Eriksen has always been seen as the go-to man for Pochettino’s playmaker role and that has been borne out in the stats. No other player made over 50 appearances for Spurs last season – Toby Alderweireld made exactly 50.

Yet if they sign one of Lo Celso or Dybala to compete with the Dane, or he leaves and the two arrive, Pochettino will be able to rotate and, most importantly, rest his most influential players.

This has been a downfall at Spurs in recent seasons, with Pochettino regularly picking a starting XI and sticking with it.

It led to tiredness last season, as the club limped over the finish line, losing four of their last five Premier League outings.

In the 2019/20 season, Spurs can head that problem off at the pass by bringing in more bodies.

If Lo Celso and Dybala arrive, Pochettino will have greater options and, one would hope, the ability to keep his players fresh as the all-important run-in looms.

West Brom fans take fire at Morgan Rogers after moving to Manchester City

[ad_pod ]

West Brom fans have been quick to voice concerns over their academy in the past and it appears as though that trend has now followed.

Earlier in the transfer window, Express & Star reported that West Brom could be set to lose teenage winger Morgan Rogers to Manchester City.

It looks as though it took a while for the deal to actually be confirmed after Rogers himself was pictured with a City shirt on Twitter only this week.

But it wasn’t a move that pleased a host of Albion fans who decided to take aim at the 17-year-old for his decision.

Some fans decided to focus on the financial gain of the transfer, despite wage details not being released, telling him sarcastically to enjoy the money.

A further supporter claimed that he’d now not play any matches for a while whilst another individual said it was the wrong move for him.

Rogers was one of the brightest players coming through the Albion academy and had scored 18 times and claimed 11 assists in 45 youth team matches throughout the years.

Last term he netted 14, which included three goals in five games across the FA Youth Cup.

Here’s some of the reaction to his exit.

Leeds target Josip Vukovic has trait that could help Helder Costa and Co thrive

[ad_pod ]

According to a report by talkSPORT, Leeds United are one of three clubs in the race to sign Maritimo midfielder Josip Vukovic, and one of the stand out attributes of his game suggests he would be hugely important to the club’s plethora of wingers next season.

What’s the word, then?

Well, talkSPORT report that the Whites, along with Premier League duo Aston Villa and Southampton, are all keen on the Croatian, who could be available for as little as £1.5m.

TalkSPORT suggest that any move for the 27-year-old could depend on whether Kalvin Phillips remains at Elland Road or not, with the same source saying Villa are one of the clubs interested in the Englishman.

The report adds that Vukovic has already rejected offers from Lille, Benfica and from an unnamed Russian club as he targets a move to England.

Important trait

Phillips starred in something of a quarterback role for the Yorkshire outfit in 2018/19, averaging a remarkable 4.6 long balls per game, according to WhoScored, as he looked to win the ball back and then set the team on their way from an attacking point of view.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

Vukovic’s numbers aren’t quite at that level, but he still averaged 2.7 per game for Maritimo last term, suggesting that he is a similar sort of player to the impressive 23-year-old.

With Leeds already having the likes of Ezgjan Alioski and Pablo Hernandez – and with Helder Costa a new addition alongside the returning Jack Clarke and Jack Harrison – Marcelo Bielsa has a wealth of wing talent at his disposal next term.

To get the best out of them, the Argentine needs a player he can rely to find those passes if Phillips leaves or even if he stays and his absent for some reason, and Vukovic looks to fit the bill.

At £1.5m he wouldn’t break the bank, but you would also think that the Whites would target a more experienced centre-back before they move for a defensive midfielder – just ask some of their fans who have been complaining on Twitter.

Manchester City: Scott Carson set to join on season-long loan from Derby

Manchester City appear set to complete the loan signing of goalkeeper Scott Carson from Derby, with the 33-year-old having a medical with the Premier League champions.

[ad_pod ]

The Mirror reported in the early hours of this morning that the veteran goalkeeper was in talks with Manchester City about a one-year loan move, with Pep Guardiola seeking an experienced backup to Ederson and Claudio Bravo.

Sky Sports News then tweeted at 10:44am this morning: “Scott Carson is currently undergoing a medical at Manchester City ahead of a season-long loan from Derby”.

According to The Mirror, Carson had been previously linked with a move to Derby’s rivals Nottingham Forest but now looks set to move to the Etihad Stadium for a season-long loan.

Carson has been with Derby for the last four seasons, having previously played for Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton, Aston Villa, West Brom, Bursaspor and Wigan.

He has not played in the Premier League since 2011, when he was at West Brom, but he has 145 appearances in the division and won four caps for England. However, his national team career remains tainted by his costly error in a fateful Euro 2008 qualifying defeat to Croatia.

He played 33 times for Derby last season, conceding 45 goals (1.36 per game) and keeping just six clean sheets (18.2% of games).

With Ederson set to be Guardiola’s first-choice goalkeeper after making 100 appearances in his two seasons at Manchester City, Carson is most likely to be competing with Bravo for the role of the Brazil netminder’s backup.

Since the end of the 2017/18 season, Bravo’s only club appearances have both been in the Community Shield. He played just 13 games in the 2017/18 campaign after Ederson joined and has made 45 appearances for the club, conceding the same number of goals and keeping 15 clean sheets (33.3% of games).

Carson has made 10 errors leading to goals in 145 Premier League games, one per 14.5 appearances in the division.

Despite being dubbed the worst signing of the 2016/17 season by Matt Stead for Football365, Bravo has only been culpable of one goal-causing error in his 25 Premier League appearances, indicating that criticism of his performances may have been over the top.

In the battle of the backup goalkeepers to Ederson, Bravo seems a clear winner over Carson if the England veteran completes his move to the Etihad.

Carson’s impending Manchester City switch has echoes of Robert Green going to Chelsea last year, with the ex-West Ham goalkeeper failing to even make the bench for a first team game for the Blues before retiring two days after their Europa League final win over Arsenal.

Perhaps Carson will be given more of a chance by Guardiola at the Etihad, but with Bravo seeming like the more dependable backup to Ederson, this deadline day move seems like a strange one from a Manchester City perspective.

Leeds fans loved Kalvin Phillips’ performance against Salford

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United booked their spot in the second round of the EFL Cup courtesy of a 3-0 win away to Salford City on Tuesday night.

It was a commanding performance from the Championship outfit, who proved to be far too strong for their League Two hosts.

Eddie Nketiah scoring on his debut will perhaps be the main story from Leeds’ point of view but the performance of Kalvin Phillips in the middle of the park was outstanding.

The 23-year-old was named the Man of the Match for his display, which was not much of a surprise.

And as expected, a number of Leeds fans have taken to social media to lavish praise on the midfielder, who was strongly linked with a move to Aston Villa during the summer.

The Whites managed to keep hold of the academy product, though, and he will be hoping to inspire his team to a successful season.

Wolves fans rave about Adama Traore after game-changing substitute appearance

[ad_pod ]

Wolves held Manchester United to a draw on Monday night but that was mainly down to the heroics of two players.

The visitors took the lead in the 27th minute through an Anthony Martial strike before Ruben Neves tied things up with a stunning long-range effort which cannoned in off the crossbar.

United then won a penalty which Paul Pogba stepped up to take but his attempt was well-saved by goalkeeper Rui Patricio, ensuring that Wolves walked away with at least a point at Molineux.

The game turned on its head at half-time as Adama Traore replaced Matt Doherty at right wing-back after the break – his withdrawal was after a discussion with the club doctor having struggled during the first 45 minutes.

Traore’s impact has drawn serious praise from not only his boss Nuno Santo but also from plenty of the Molineux faithful.

One supporter claimed it was his best performance in a Wolves shirt yet, saying he smashed it whilst others lauded him for changing the match, one of which believed he had such a big impact because he’s unstoppable when he’s in full stride.

A further fan said he would give him a start against Burnley on Sunday with another stating that Traore is flourishing at right wing-back.

Real Madrid right to pursue Sporting’s Bruno Fernandes

According to Goal, Real Madrid have opened talks to sign Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes.

What’s the word, then?

Despite having a really powerful entrance to the 2019 summer transfer window, Real Madrid have suddenly gone quiet and apart from the big Galactico signing of Eden Hazard, there hasn’t been much going on to properly excite the fans.

But it appears there could be a late addition in the Spanish capital in the form of Sporting’s Fernandes, with Goal reporting that Real Madrid have opened talks for his services having seemingly failed to prize Paul Pogba from Old Trafford.

Sporting want €80m (£72.5m) for the attacking midfielder and it looks as though Real Madrid have definitely chosen the right man to target.

Two birds, one stone

It’s safe to say that Fernandes has warranted their interest with his performances as of late. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder has been extremely proficient in both setting up the goals and finishing them off by himself. The stats and his key attributes really do attest to that.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

In his 113 games played for the Portuguese side, he has managed to score 49 goals and also assist an impressive 42 in the process. This could, as it turns out, potentially solve Real Madrid’s glaring goal-scoring problems. Last season, Los Blancos only tallied 63 goals as opposed to 94 scored the season before.

This serves as proof enough that they have been lacking a real goal-scorer as well as a real creator in the team for quite some time now – nobody managed more than a mere six assists for them in La Liga last season.

Fernandes can offer them both in one as he is more than capable of taking up those very responsibilities. Finding players that can offer those kinds of services is a tall task nowadays but the Portuguese looks like the real deal.

This starts making even more sense when we consider the state of the modern market, and the sum of around £72.5m looks like a true bargain for Zinedine Zidane and co.

Man United defender Chris Smalling sent supportive message by Matteo Darmian

Darmian was the latest piece of fat to be trimmed from United’s side when he signed for Serie A outfit Parma. The 29-year-old joins a long list of names to leave Old Trafford under the Norwegian including Antonio Valencia, Alexis Sanchez, Ander Herrera, Romelu Lukaku, Smalling and Marouane Fellaini.

Credit to the man, he went about his business at United as a true professional and never once kicked up a fuss despite rarely featuring towards the end of his stint. Genuinely seems like one of football’s nice guys.
