Saga shows that Arsenal simply have no interest

“Winning isn’t everything,” says Tom Fox, the Arsenal commercial officer. And that is all we needed to confirm that Arsenal are no longer a football club, but rather a business who use the sport as a device to grow financially.

Maybe that’s not always the best way to paint the picture; plenty of clubs, whether they’re football teams or clubs of other sports, drive to become stronger financially. But the need has always been to invest in order to grow on a number of different fronts. It just seems to make very little sense to sell a losing club as a fantastic model for which others should follow.

Where does Theo Walcott come in? Well like every season gone past, and starting with the year Ashley Cole moved to Chelsea, the club have seen little value in rewarding and keeping it’s best players. I’m firmly of the belief now that the Walcott ship has sailed and the player will be off come the end of the season. ‘Its not about winning’ is just a method to paper over the impending disappointment of losing another player for whom many supporters can identify.

Yes the player has been frustrating for so long, but there are very few fans who want to see the player leave. At the other end of the scale, many, many fans want to see the player as a regular member of the starting XI following his good performances up until this point.

[post_link url=” https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/arsenal/finances-aside-this-could-be-a-good-thing-for-arsenal,https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/arsenal/wilshere-getting-back-to-his-best-at-arsenal,https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/arsenal/the-real-finger-of-blame-at-arsenal” target=”_blank” type=”tower”]

Tom Fox is one of the many names currently at the club who have no idea how to run a football club or what it means to be a football club. How much of Arsenal’s identity will be preserved with people openly talking about winning being a secondary to something else? It’s almost as if the club are drawing the landscape for the future, yet one that doesn’t feature the trophies that helped elevate Arsenal’s status in English football.

Naturally, Fox, Ivan Gazidis and Richard Law’s job descriptions are likely to be rife with terms that keep the club’s finances in check, and that just sums up where we are with Walcott.

Arsene Wenger seems determined to keep the player, although it’s difficult to say how much influence he has over the matter of the final wages offered.

There is no ambition other than to sit on as much cash as possible—from the board’s perspective, not Wenger’s—even if it means the best players move on. There’s no concern for strengthening your closest rivals while you continue to decline.

Gazidis came from the MLS and Stan Kroenke owns franchises in America, but do any of them know how to properly run a football club? It’s all about working to a wage structure that is unrealistic of what the club needs: Champions League football.

It worked for so long because players were in place from a previous regime, but slowly and without remorse, the current figures at the club have helped to disband a squad who were the only alternative to the heavy spending of clubs like Chelsea. Now that Walcott and soon Bacary Sagna remain the final few to be forced out the door—because I’m not convinced either of them want to leave—where do the club go next?

There seems to be absolutely no method to the madness, at least from a footballing perspective. Perhaps that is why there is such an emphasis on the club retaining Wenger, for he appears able to keep the club at the highest level. It’s maximum revenue from competitions and match days, but extremely little spend when in comparison to others. At some point or another, the well will run dry and the club will have no answers.

On the pitch, Walcott is one of the team’s most dangerous players. He makes the team come alive and helps them raise the tempo, something which is absolutely key for the style of football they play. But he’s so much more than just an important figure in the squad. It’s players like Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who you want representing your club. Yes there’s the English factor and the sense of connection with the fans, but it’s also the role models and the players who know how to speak in front of the camera.

None of that is taken into account, and yet the club think they’re standing in a reasonable position when offering £75,000-per-week. Theo Walcott may not be worth £100,000-per-week or just shy for his abilities on the pitch, but everything that adds up including the morale at the club is so important. Yes he is worth more than the reported wages he’s been offered, but the club do not see it that way and they never will.

Silva would improve Everton’s attack even further if he swooped on £9m-rated dynamo

The Everton fans in and around the Transfer Tavern are eagerly awaiting their club to recruit some new talent this summer so they can attempt to fulfil their European ambitions.

Marco Silva has been hunted by Everton for months now and after finally securing their man, the Toffees must ensure they back him in the transfer market so that success can be achieved. Everton have a team full of good players but equally, have players that should no longer be necessary or good enough to help a European push. Therefore to replace the deadwood at the club, our punters suggest Gonzalo Martinez as a worthwhile signing at £9million.

The 25-year-old currently plays for River Plate in Argentina and having enjoyed personal success this year, he should be the player that Everton look into signing. Martinez, a player who can play anywhere across the front line, scored 7 goals and managed 4 assists in all competitions last season. Those statistics prove that not only is he a threat on the wing but also he makes chances happen and has the figures to back himself up.

Walcott and Bolasie are good, pacey wingers but bringing Gonzalo Martinez in as well would add a dynamic element to their attack, full of trickery and determination to influence goal-scoring opportunities.

Everton have to improve on their turbulent performances from last season and the only way they can do that is to acquire some talented players during this summer transfer window. With the signing of Gonzalo Martinez alone, their attack could have a completely new dimension to it, and one filled with excitement.

In Focus: Everton won’t sign Stefan de Vrij if Jose Mourinho wants him at Old Trafford

According to reports in The Mirror, Everton will face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United in the race to sign Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Soccer Football – Serie A – Roma vs Lazio – Stadio Olimpico, Rome, Italy – November 18, 2017 Roma’s Edin Dzeko in action with Lazio’s Stefan de Vrij REUTERS/Max Rossi

Well, The Mirror says that the Toffees are keen to sign the 26-year-old to boost their defensive options at the end of the season, having also enquired about the Netherlands international during the January transfer window.

The Mirror reports that United, Liverpool and Arsenal are also interested in the Dutchman, who will be available on a free when his contract expires in June, but the centre-back would prefer to link up with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

The report adds that the Portuguese boss is keen to strengthen his backline this summer, and Lazio believe that the player already has his next move lined up which is why they ended contract negotiations with him.

How has de Vrij done this season?

He has been brilliant.

The Dutchman has been a rock at the back for Lazio as they currently lie in fourth position in Serie A and just one point behind arch-rivals AS Roma, while he has also showed his importance at the other end of the pitch too with four goals in 24 Italian top flight outings.

Would he be a good signing for Everton?

He certainly would be.

De Vrij has proven himself as one of the best in his position during his time with Lazio, and the opportunity to pick up a player with his experience and a Netherlands international who is approaching the prime of his career for free is an opportunity that the Toffees won’t be able to refuse.

All of those reasons are ones why they won’t get him however as a number of top European clubs should be keen, and if the player really does prefer a move to Manchester United and Mourinho wants him, Everton have no chance of competing with their Premier League rivals.

Time for West Ham to offload this big money buy?

In an eventful transfer window which resulted in West Ham snapping up no less than nine players, two stars especially have settled into the Premier League with distinction. Both Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho have scored a combined total of five goals in their last five games for the Hammers. This impressive stat means that the appointment of former player Teddy Sheringham as striker coach is turning out to be a shrewd move by Sam Allardyce.

However, last season, David Gold and David Sullivan, as well as Big Sam, made the decision to secure the services of Andy Carroll on a permanent basis, smashing the Hammers’ transfer record by forking out £19m for the England striker. Injuries have temporarily scuppered Carroll’s chances of resurrecting his career after a miserable stint at Liverpool, with surgery on both ankles in the past year having massively restricted the former Newcastle United hit-man’s playing time.

With Sakho and Valencia both hitting form, as well as new recruit Mauro Zarate offering something different with his technical ability, it will be very hard for Carroll to walk into the starting XI when he returns from injury. There is now talk of big man being sold, with the likes of Newcastle willing snap him up.

In his loan season with the East London outfit in 2012/2013, Carroll managed to muster 26 Premier League appearances, scoring seven goals and making four assists in the process. With a conversion rate of just 8.6%, Carroll’s presence on the pitch was enough to guide the Boleyn Ground side to a mid-table finish. The season after, where a horrid ankle injury ruled Carroll out for a large chunk of the campaign, the powerful attacker played nine times, scoring two goals and making four assists.

However, despite his lack of games, Carroll can make a difference for any Premier League side in any game. Proof of this was his first game in claret and blue in the 2012/2013 season. In a 3-0 home win against Fulham, Carroll was a constant nuisance for Brede Hangeland, a centre half who was in his prime and a very difficult opponent to play against. But Carroll made it look easy against a defender who was being targeted by clubs in the Champions League at the time.

His link up play with captain Kevin Nolan has proven to be deadly. Despite Nolan not being the most popular player at West Ham with the fans, when he links up with Carroll, goals will soon come. The tall, strong and powerful striker is far from finished, and can still return to the international scene before you know it. Despite the Hammers’ eye for a goal in this current campaign, there will be spells in the season where the Hammers will go games without scoring. Having options is critical for Big Sam, and when Carroll is back in action, the Irons’ frontline will become even more potent.

Giroud urges Arsenal loan deal

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has urged Arsene Wenger to bring Thierry Henry back to the Premier League during the January transfer window.

The Gunners are said to be interested in luring the New York Red Bulls striker back to the Emirates Stadium on loan with the MLS season finished.

He re-joined the club last year on a similar deal and hinted at the end of his spell that he would be happy to return should the Londoners be interested.

Giroud believes that the 35-year-old would be a good addition and that he would love to work alongside him:

“Henry misses the enthusiasm around the Premier League,” he is quoted by The Metro.

“But he didn’t tell me if he will be back.

“It would be great joy to play with him.”

Henry left Arsenal in 2007, following a long and successful period in North London, to join Barcelona.

After three seasons he exited the Nou Camp to join the Red Bulls, becoming their second Designated Player.

With the MLS calendar ending during the winter, players are free to join European clubs as long as they have their employer’s permission.

Henry took advantage of this last season to return to the Emirates Stadium, where he was impressive during the short stint.

The likes of David Beckham, Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane have all utilised this option to move on a temporary basis during the American off-season.

Celtic should end Sunderland flop’s misery and bringing in an ideal Boyata replacement ASAP

Celtic fans in the Transfer Tavern are excited for the new season following their club-record signing of Odsonne Edouard, so here’s some more transfer news to excite the Celtic faithful.

The Rangers revolution is underway as Steven Gerrard has started to make a number of new signings this summer. Celtic fans, however will want to make sure that there’s only one club in town worth speaking about. Although the Hoops are reigning champions, Brendan Rodgers is still looking strengthen a few areas in his squad.

One possible signing Rodgers should consider is Sunderland’s Lamine Kone.

The Breakdown

The 29-year-old defender had a strong start to his Sunderland career. Kone along with Jan Kirchoff and Wahbi Khazri, helped Sam Allardyce keep Sunderland in the Premier League. Following the end of the season, the Ivory Coast international attracted interest from multiple clubs, namely Everton, although he ultimately signed a new deal to stay at the club.

The powerful defender has since fallen out of favour on Wearside. Although he’s made 69 appearances for the Black Cats, his performances haven’t quite matched up to the early part of his tenure in Sunderland. With that being said, a move for Celtic might just make sense for all sides concerned.

Celtic could offer the defender a way out of a team that has suffered back-to-back relegation but also the opportunity to win some silverware. Moreover, if Celtic can bring Kone in, they could finally get rid of the inconsistent Dedryck Boyata.  The Belgium international has never truly won over Hoops fans and could be out the door this summer. Putting Kone at the back instead of Boyata, may just give Rodgers a defensive powerhouse that could well bring in yet another title.

Celtic fans – what are your thoughts?

Expert Predictions: Connor Humm discusses Arsenal’s chances in North London Derby

Arsenal enter Saturday’s North London Derby knowing only a win will do if they’re to have any chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League via a top four finish. Not only are bitter rivals Tottenham above them in the table, but both are looking upwards into a fiercely competitive top four, with the exception of runaway Premier League champions-in-waiting Manchester City.

Arsenal though have won their last nine games at Wembley in all competitions – it’s arguably a better home for them than Spurs – and it was Arsene Wenger’s side who came out on top in the reverse fixture earlier this season, despite prior cries of the Emirates Stadium clash being the coronation for the new kings of north London.

So, will Arsenal continue to extend their reign, or will Saturday’s 12.30pm kickoff drag them a step closer towards abdication? This week’s expert Connor Humm shares his thoughts and predictions ahead of a huge North London Derby.

Impressive January business breathed some much-needed positivity into the Arsenal camp, swapping Henrikh Mkhitaryan for Alexis Sanchez and bringing in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The former Borussia Dortmund man is undoubtedly one of the top strikers in Europe, but the swoop isn’t without complications – chiefly, how to fit him and Arsenal’s previous club-record signing from the summer, Alexandre Lacazette, into the same starting XI.

Would you leave one of Arsenal’s strikers on the bench or find a way of getting both into the same starting XI?

Connor: “I think you have to start Aubameyang in this one. His pace will cause Tottenham problems and has already done so in the past when he was at Dortmund. I don’t believe Arsenal can afford to play two strikers against such a tricky opponent. Either sticking with the 4-2-3-1 which saw them beat Everton so easily or reverting to the back five means a one-striker formation is the only viable option.”

While Arsenal’s record at Wembley is certainly impressive, their record on the road this season certainly isn’t. The Gunners have won just three of their 13 away games in the Premier League and conceded 21 goals, not that the problem has been limited to their top flight campaign – their most humbling result of the season so far came at the City Ground in a 4-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup.

What has been Arsenal’s ultimate problem away from home this season?

Connor: “The away record has been horrendous, especially when you compare that to the home form which is fantastic. I believe Arsene Wenger even said it shouldn’t make a difference – you play the same game on the same pitch. It really is mind boggling when you look at it from an outside point of view. The only thing I could probably put it down to is effort because I cannot see any other reason why the difference in results is so vast away from home.”

Tottenham, meanwhile, enter Saturday’s game off the back of two impressive results against Big Six rivals. A 2-0 win over Manchester United at Wembley was followed by a dramatic draw at Anfield and that will give the Lilywhites huge confidence of claiming another good result against their local rivals as well.

Excepting Harry Kane, which Tottenham player concerns you most?

Connor: “I would be interested to see if Toby Alderweireld starts the game. The Belgian is arguably the best centre-half in the league and Tottenham have clearly missed him since he’s been out injured. He played the full 90 minutes in the FA cup replay against Newport so I’d expect him to start. I’m a big admirer of the player and believe he could be the difference between winning and losing for Spurs.”

Even if Spurs are the superior team these days, they and Arsenal are still two incredibly well-matched sides, blessed with some of the best players in Europe, and the levelling knack of the derby will only minimise any differences between the two. On such occasions, one key battle can decide everything.

Where will this game be lost and won?

Connor: “The midfield battle will be a big one but a key area will be set pieces. David Ospina is rumoured to start the game and he’s known for a calamitous approach towards set-pieces due to his height and his opposite number Hugo Lloris isn’t much better in my opinion. Both sides have a reasonable amount of height, meaning corners and free-kicks could settle this one.”

And finally Connor, let’s hear your score prediction…

Connor: “Spurs 0-2 Arsenal. Arsenal have an amazing record at Wembley in recent years so I think that will give them the confidence to go on and complete a league double over their north london rivals.”

The Korean lightning bolt on Liverpool’s radar

Name: Son Heung-min

Country: South Korea

Club: Bayer Leverkusen

Age: 21

International Caps: 26

Position: Left Midfield/Striker

Labouring in their attempts at securing the signature of Adam Lallana, Liverpool may be better off focusing their efforts further afield. If Brendan Rodgers turns his attention to Leverkusen, and South Korea during the World Cup this summer, he may just find his answer in the shape of 21-year-old Son Heung-min.

It’s a phrase oft misused, but in the case of Son, he quite literally ‘plays with a smile on his face’. But don’t let his friendly exterior fool you. Son is one of the Bundesliga’s most deadly attackers.

Typically deployed as a left-sided attacker, Son is also adept at filling a central role, most often as a second-striker. He’s left-footed, but is adept with either leg, demonstrated aptly with a fine strike against Borussia Monchengladbach with his ‘wrong’ foot. Whilst possessing a burst of pace which can rival the quickest of players in the Premier League, he is unselfish with it and has a great awareness of his teammates.

His 10 goals and four assists in his first season with Bayer Leverkusen wasn’t a bad return for the Korean, but his form at Hamburg the previous season hint there is much more to come from the youngster.

If Liverpool aspire to compete with the elite in European football, the squad needs work. Rodgers has watched Son numerous occasions this season, and if reports are to be believed, he is very much in the Liverpool manager’s thoughts.

A lack of attacking depth always threatened to derail what was an astonishing 2013-14 campaign, but thankfully for Liverpool, a lack of fixtures worked in their favour. Competing in the Champions League will require added depth. With Son on board, Rodgers will have acquired a player of high potential, able to score and create whilst fulfilling the youthful and energetic criteria his current attacking crop possesses in abundance.

Sunderland star unhappy at comeback

Phil Bardsley has admitted that he is unhappy with returning from injury to play his part in two matches that have ended in defeat.

Sunderland’s Capital One Cup loss to Middlesbrough last week was Bardsley’s first game back in the team since coming back from an ankle injury.

Sunderland then lost to Aston Villa this Saturday, but although Bardsley admits it is not an ideal situation, the 27-year-old feels that the Black Cats must score more to sort out their problems – something which he believes will improve the atmosphere among the club and its fans.

“It’s not the way I’d have liked to come back at all with two defeats. The fans stayed with us on Saturday, but it must be difficult for them to come and watch us at the moment,” he told the Shields Gazette.

“Some of the performances have been good, but we need to score a goal. When we get one,  that will lift the whole place. Everyone knows the problem – it’s not rocket science.

“Everyone needs to do their bit, and if we’re not scoring, we need to make sure we keep the ball out at the other end, unfortunately, we didn’t do that on Saturday.

“It was a decent performance from the lads and just a little bit of luck will do. You just wonder how we didn’t score a goal and we’re all scratching our heads.”

Bardsley also pinted to the spirit in teh dressing room, despite a run of bad results for the Black Cats so far this season.

“The spirit in our dressing room is unbreakable with the group of players we’ve got. We’ve got two tough away games coming up but hopefully we can dust ourselves down, have a little rest and start again in training. Hopefully we can get something at Everton,” he added.

Bas Dost is the experienced poacher that Newcastle United need next season

Next season is a massive one for Newcastle United. After a year of consolidation and an unexpected top half finish in the English Premier League, the Magpies are in a position to really strengthen and solidify their long-term future as one of the elite sides in the country.

That makes this summer’s transfer window vitally important. With the capacity for spending in doubt, it’s crucial that they shop for players that not only improve Rafa Benitez’s first team but also represent value in today’s market.

While multiple areas of the team need strengthened and depth added to them, what Benitez’s side arguably needs most is an elite striker who has a track record of scoring regularly at a decent level.

Not a single player reached double figures for goals in the league last season, with the entire team netting just 39 times. That total was lower than four of the teams that finished below them and all but one of the teams that finished above them in the table. It’s clearly something that can be improved upon next term.

One player that could be available for a transfer is Bas Dost, a player whose 2017/18 demonstrates that he could the man that Benitez needs to help Newcastle unlock their potential next season.

As reported by The Telegraph, he is one of a number of players in the process of cancelling contracts with Portuguese side Sporting after a dramatic season of clashes with the club’s fans and president.

The striker was injured in an incident last month that saw dozens of fans forcing their way into the team’s training center and assaulting players and staff.

Is he a player that Newcastle should now be moving for this summer, and what boxes does he tick for the St James’ Park side?

First of all, the headline grabber when it comes to Bas Dost is his scoring record of last season. With 27 goals in 30 league matches, he was in outrageous form, scoring 42% of the team’s total league goals all by himself. With another six goals in other competitions, his tally for the season came to an outstanding 33 goals. That was no fluke either given he also netted 37 goals in all competitions in 2016/17.

Delve further into his statistics of last season and you get an idea of how just how clinical he was. As shown by WhoScored, he averaged 2.2 shots per game in league action, a total of 66. That means he has a shot conversion rate of 41%, demonstrating that when provided with chances, the poacher will stick them away consistently.

It’s the kind of attacking contribution that could transform the Magpies next term, who don’t lack creative guile with the likes of Ayoze Perez and Jonjo Shelvey providing support from midfield.

With 30 key passes across the season and 141 aerial duels won, an average of 4.7 per game, it’s also clear he is a player that can bring others into the game around him. At 6ft 5in tall, he has the physical presence that would offer Newcastle a direct option, which could prove vital, a focal point that Benitez’s side can latch onto against difficult opposition.

The benefits clearly outweigh the negatives when it comes to this transfer and given his precarious position at Sporting, he’s a player that Newcastle need to consider over the coming months, ensuring they are the English side that convinces him his future lies in the Premier League.
