Boult, Southee fail to meet expectations

New Zealand’s inability to bowl out Australia during the Trans-Tasman series has placed the spotlight on their highly regarded pacemen Trent Boult and Tim Southee

At the start of this summer, New Zealand had two bowlers inside the top ten in the Test rankings: Trent Boult and Tim Southee. Australia had one, Mitchell Johnson, and unbeknownst to them he was about to retire. But the inability of New Zealand’s attack to take 20 wickets in any of the five Tests between the teams this season was a major factor in Australia’s domination and retention, twice, of the Trans-Tasman Trophy.Perhaps the most surprising thing was that in their home conditions in Wellington and Christchurch, New Zealand’s attack, led by Southee and Boult, struggled to find anywhere near as much swing as Australia’s fast men. The conditions played a part – Steven Smith won the toss and sent New Zealand in on green pitches in both matches – but Australia also proved capable of finding reverse swing later in the Tests. The final wicket tally for the five Tests home and away makes for lopsided reading. Josh Hazlewood topped the wickets with 22 at 32.63, Nathan Lyon was second with 20 at 27.75, and Boult was third with 18 victims at the inflated average of 42.11. No other New Zealander took more than 10 wickets across the five Tests and only Neil Wagner and Mitchell Santner, who each played only one Test, averaged under 40.Southee’s tally was especially disappointing. He finished the summer with nine wickets against Australia at 62.77, and rarely looked seriously threatening. Although Southee took 13 wickets at 16.30 in the two home Tests against Sri Lanka that came between the two Trans-Tasman contests, outgoing captain Brendon McCullum said after the loss in Christchurch that Southee could soon face competition for his place.”It’s probably not my question to answer any more. He is a strong leader in the group but Tim’s got some challenges in the next little while,” McCullum said. “There’s other guys coming through who are performing very well, Matt Henry in particular, and it’s going to push Tim to make sure he’s operating at his best which we saw for a good 12 to 18 months. He’s got some challenges but I still believe he’s a strong leader in the group and he’s just got to smooth out some of his rough edges.”One man who did himself plenty of favours at Hagley Oval was Wagner, who collected match figures of 7 for 166 and was tireless in enacting the team plan of repeated short-pitched bowling to a packed leg-side field. It was a desperate tactic used because the New Zealanders were failing to swing the ball, but Wagner’s willingness to bowl long, hard spells will make him an attractive option for the selectors going forward.”The beauty of Neil is that he makes things happen,” New Zealand coach Mike Hesson said. “Even on benign surfaces, where we play the majority of our cricket, he does generate wicket-taking opportunities. I think he got 6 for 70 in the first innings once he decided to bowl 25 overs of bumpers and there are not many people around the world who can do that.”I have been fortunate enough to work with Neil for a long time, so I know he’s a gutsy performer. But I thought the skill he showed, that’s a really a difficult thing to do, to get the ball between chest and head consistently and I thought his ability to keep them in that area and keep challenging was world-class and certainly kept us in the match.”Should the selectors decide to grant more opportunities to Wagner and Henry in New Zealand’s upcoming Test campaigns, it could mean something of a changing of the guard, with the attack having been based around Southee and Boult for some time. Hesson conceded that choosing New Zealand’s attack would not necessarily be as straightforward as it had at times in recent years.”I think there will be [tough selections],” Hesson said. “Tim and Trent for two years have been exceptional for us but we have different guys in the squad who do different things. We have alluded to Neil. He brings a different option. Dougie Bracewell is a bit different, as is Matt Henry, so within those five we have got, we should be able to get a pretty good attack in all conditions around the world.”New Zealand finished the five Tests against Australia this summer with four losses and one draw, but Hesson said he felt that the battle had been somewhat closer than that scoreline suggested.”In Australia we felt we were pretty close in Adelaide,” Hesson said. “I think over here, to be fair, we weren’t close in the end result but certainly felt that if things had been a little different then we might have been able to put a bit more pressure on them.”

Banglawash threat looms over India

After whitewashing Zimbabwe and Pakistan in their last two home ODI series, Bangladesh will complete a hat-trick if they beat India in the third ODI in Mirpur

Isam: Bangladesh are playing attacking cricket

Big pictureFrom the outside looking in, Bangladesh trouncing Zimbabwe 5-0 barely caused a blip. There was perhaps a double-take when Pakistan were served 3-0. If they whitewash India on Wednesday, the world will sit up and notice. The 14 men and the support staff on tour here already have. MS Dhoni has admitted his team was outplayed. He has wrestled questions on his captaincy, even bristled momentarily when the critique moved onto selection. R Ashwin, another player of the ‘keep calm’ variety, seemed to feel he was behind enemy lines at the pre-match press conference. He felt compelled to remind everyone that India had won 75% of their matches this season. Whether that was because of the scoreline of the series or the brutal spotlight that is on the team is debatable, but it was clear to see it does have issues to sort out. Besides the headache of why the batsmen who are touted to front up for the 2019 World Cup are misfiring all at once.A lot of the credit should go to Bangladesh. They have won key moments and ensured the momentum never dissipated. There is a pack mentality readily visible among the quicks. So much that India’s batsmen haven’t had any room to breathe. They have been bowled out twice, and the best partnership they have put on – one among only four that have crossed fifty – has been 95.”They’ve owned the Mirpur stadium,” was Ashwin’s assessment. New faces like Mustafizur Rahman, Soumya Sarkar and Litton Das have fit neatly into the one-day structure, while the old faithful Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza have continued contributing. An 11th win on the trot at home would be the perfect way for them to sign-off in front of the loud, colourful and unabashedly partisan Mirpur crowd.Form guideBangladesh: WWWWW (last five matches, most recent first)

India: LLLWWIn the spotlightWith the squad bursting with performers, Mushfiqur Rahim hasn’t had much to do. He did seal the series with a sparkly cameo that indicated he was finding his best touch again. But perhaps he might like to put in a more substantial performance, considering the scrutiny over his wicketkeeping lately.Shikhar Dhawan has had a decent tour so far. He has restated his case for Test selection, and has taken home a half-century from the second ODI. What he and the rest of the India batting line-up haven’t been able to do is set up a big total. India have spoken about playing freely, a mandate Dhawan quite likes.Team newsBangladesh have added the legspinner Jubair Hossain to their squad for the third ODI. “”He was taken to increase the bowling options,” Faruque Ahmed, the chief selector, told ESPNcricinfo. “We will have a look at the wicket tomorrow and take a call on him.”Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Litton Das/ Mominul Haque/ Rony Talukdar, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Sabbir Rahman, 7 Nasir Hossain, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 9 Rubel Hossain/Jubair Hossain, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Taskin AhmedAjinkya Rahane opted to train yesterday after being dropped for the last ODI. The rest of the team went through “a couple of quiet days,” Ashwin said. The morale isn’t as high as it normally is within the Indian camp.India (probable): 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Ambati Rayudu/ Ajinkya Rahane/ Stuart Binny, 5 Suresh Raina 6 MS Dhoni (capt &wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Axar Patel, 11 Dhawal KulkarniPitch and conditionsEvery day of play on tour has contained the threat of rain, and the trend doesn’t look to be changing. The players trained under cloudy skies on the eve of the match as well. As far as the pitch is concerned, there might not be much change. It is expected to be a touch slow.Stats and trivia Bangladesh will have 11 consecutive wins at home if they win the third ODI. That will leave them one short of the record held jointly by Pakistan (2000-03), West Indies (1986-89) and Australia (2003-04). This is the fifth time Bangladesh have won five or more consecutive ODIs, the longest being a nine-match streak in 2006. Bangladesh have currently won five back-to-back ODIs – three against Pakistan and two against India. Before this series, India had only lost one match to Bangladesh in a bilateral ODI series (Dhaka, 2004). They have already lost two ODIs in this series.Quotes”If there is no counter, then what can we do? Can we kidnap him?”
“We spoke in the dressing-room just before going out to training [on Tuesday]. We have told to be as serious as we would be if we had lost the first two games. We will not give an inch.”

ScorecardAn unbeaten 135 from Joe Burns and a five-wicket haul from Ben Cutting stood out, as Queensland beat South Australia by five wickets at the Gabba in Brisbane.Queensland chased 299 in 63.4 overs, riding on Burns’ unbeaten 187-ball 135 which featured 12 fours and three sixes. Burns was also backed up by Peter Forrest’s 81, as the pair added 162 for the fourth wicket. Resuming on 4 for 357, South Australia added 101 runs for their final six wickets while batting for 28 overs. Jake Lehmann got his second fifty in as many games after which the team’s last four wickets fell for just 17 runs. Ben Cutting picked up 5 for 88 in the innings, taking his match figures to 6 for 134Joe Mennies struck in the second ball of Queesland’s second innings to get rid of Matthew Renshaw for a duck, and later, Trent Lawford and Cutting fell within the space of seven balls, leaving the home side tottering at 3 for 30. However, Burns and Forrest steadied the chase, batting together for 39 overs before Adam Zampa had Forrest caught behind.Zampa struck again to remove Chris Hartely for 33, but Burns kept going at the other end. Jack Wildermuth’s cameo of 32 from 17 balls saw Queensland home, handing them their fourth win of the season and South Australia their sixth loss.

Pakistan two wickets from victory

Misbah-ul-Haq was poised to overtake Imran Khan and Javed Miandad as Pakistan’s most successful Test captain, after his team played the perfect game to finish the fourth day on the verge of victory

Pakistan on the brink of victory

Ross Taylor failed for the second time in the match as New Zealand hurtled towards defeat•Getty ImagesMisbah-ul-Haq was poised to overtake Imran Khan and Javed Miandad as Pakistan’s most successful Test captain, after his team played the perfect game to finish the fourth day on the verge of victory in Abu Dhabi. Mohammad Hafeez’s brisk century – his first in more than two years – allowed Misbah to declare in the first half of the day, giving Pakistan’s bowlers at least 144 overs to dismiss New Zealand. They took eight wickets in 54.New Zealand’s task was enormous. The target of 480 was more than they had ever scored in the the final innings of a Test, and to secure a draw they had to play their third-longest fourth innings. The visitors made a bright start, with Brendon McCullum and Tom Latham scoring swiftly against the Pakistan fast bowlers to achieve New Zealand’s first half-century opening stand in 16 innings. The introduction of spin changed everything, though. Zulfiqar Babar and Yasir Shah slowed down the scoring and took three wickets in 21 balls to put the magnitude of New Zealand’s task back in perspective.Babar had bowled a few economical overs when Latham, looking for release, attempted a sweep but top-edged to Yasir running in from deep backward square leg. Yasir then got rid of New Zealand’s most experienced batsmen, trapping both McCullum and Ross Taylor lbw with googlies. McCullum’s stayed low but Taylor simply plonked his foot in front of the stumps and played the wrong line. New Zealand had gone from 57 for 0 to 69 for 3 by tea.Kane Williamson and Corey Anderson were steady for a while in the final session, against Babar and Yasir, so Misbah turned to Hafeez and Rahat. The results came quickly. From round the wicket, Hafeez slid the ball across the advancing Williamson, leaving Sarfraz Ahmed with a straightforward stumping to end the partnership on 42.The possibility of Pakistan wrapping up the Test with a day to spare increased when Rahat struck off successive deliveries. His late movement drew the edge from Jimmy Neesham, who made a two-ball duck, and BJ Watling was bowled after the ball deviated significantly because it hit the under side of his thigh pad.Anderson became Imran Khan’s first wicket after he shouldered arms to a straight delivery. The batsman chose not to review despite replays indicated the ball had pitched fractionally outside leg. Tim Southee departed quickly too, but the ninth-wicket pair of Ish Sodhi and Mark Craig stubbornly resisted for 89 deliveries to take the game into the final day. That New Zealand had such a long haul ahead of them was down to how quickly Pakistan scored on the fourth morning. Hafeez had said after play on day three that they wanted 160 more runs, and Pakistan scored exactly that many in 32.2 overs.Hafeez’s timing was impeccable from the start, cutting and driving the seamers when given width, and capitalising on Sodhi’s poor lengths by using his feet to take the ball on the full and drive through cover. When Sodhi got his legbreaks to pitch right, they spun viciously to beat the bat several times, foreboding signs for the New Zealand batsmen. He dismissed Azhar for the second time in the match, lbw while playing the sweep, and later picked up Younis Khan in similar fashion. The good balls from Sodhi were interspersed by several bad ones, though, and Hafeez pulled a long hop to bring up his half-century.He continued batting aggressively after lunch and launched Sodhi over long-on to move on to 97. His century – his first against New Zealand – came off only 130 deliveries and Misbah called his men in 27 minutes into the second session. It was his fifth consecutive declaration and it put him on the brink of a historic win.

Ganguly set for administrative stint

Sourav Ganguly is set to be elected unopposed as the joint secretary of the Cricket Association of Bengal during the AGM next week, marking the former India captain’s first stint with cricket administration. The deadline for filing candidatures for the election to be held on July 27 ended today (July 20). CAB treasurer Biswarup Dey confirmed that Sourav Ganguly and Subir Ganguly are the only two candidates to have submitted nomination papers for the two posts of joint secretaries. While Subir is an incumbent joint secretary, Sourav will replace Sujan Mukherjee who is to complete his maximum term of four years. It will be interesting to see if Ganguly is able to spare substantial amount time for his new role from his commitments as a television expert, though CAB office-bearers exuded confidence about Ganguly’s intentions.”Sourav would have never took up such an important responsibility had he not been sure about his availability,” Dey said. It is also worth noting if Ganguly represents the CAB at important BCCI meetings. After retiring from international cricket in 2008, Ganguly was appointed as the head of BCCI’s technical committee. However, since he was still active on the domestic circuit, he was replaced by his team-mate Anil Kumble. Once he was done with his domestic assignments, including the IPL in 2012, Ganguly took over as the CAB’s cricket development committee chief. He had played an instrumental role in roping in Waqar Younis and Muttiah Muralitharan as bowling consultants for Bengal cricket ahead of the previous domestic season.Ganguly’s inclusion will be the only change to an otherwise stable CAB administrative set-up, headed by former BCCI and ICC chief Jagmohan Dalmiya. All the eight posts for office-bearers, including that of the president, will be elected unopposed during the AGM.

Uthappa powers Knight Riders into playoffs

Kolkata Knight Riders progressed into the playoffs on the back of Robin Uthappa’s unbeaten 83, while Royal Challengers Bangalore were knocked out of the tournament

The Report by Alagappan Muthu22-May-20145:14

Prasad: RCB were inconsistent this season

ScorecardAnother Knight Riders win, another Robin Uthappa forty-plus score•BCCI

Robin Uthappa was little more than a spectator for eight overs as Royal Challengers Bangalore displayed the intent of a side fighting for survival. Three Kolkata Knight Riders batsmen were in the hut just after the Powerplay and Uthappa was 20 off 18. He finished an unbeaten 83 off 51 to confirm his team’s place in the playoffs by extending their unbeaten run to six matches. Royal Challengers’ loss meant they were out of the tournament. They did have the resources to threaten a target of 196. But they persisted with a misfiring Chris Gayle and endured another poor start. Yogesh Takawale, inducted in the XI to offset Gayle’s dot balls, looked scratchy early on and when he was becoming fluent, he perished. Sunil Narine’s script was near flawless against Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh – who made a brief fist of it when he swatted Umesh Yadav in a 22-run 16th over – and AB de Villiers to scupper any chance the visitors had.The pitch had offered early evidence of stopping on the batsmen a couple of times. Uthappa decided nudging around was too risky and enacted a counterattack. Concise footwork added power to his straight hits. His indulgence in unorthodoxy went as far as sweeping and reverse-sweeping, but more often than not he concentrated on guiding the ball into gaps with necessary angling of the bat. A caress to third man gave him the orange cap and his ninth 40-plus score in 13 matches ended up becoming his first unbeaten innings this season. Eden Gardens was rumbling “Uthappa, Uthappa” as he drilled the final ball of the innings – a full toss on middle – into the sightscreen to reach his highest IPL score.Shakib Al Hasan was a brilliant deputy. Knight Riders were 56 for 3 in the eighth over when he joined Uthappa. The 121-run partnership took shape with singles and twos before Shakib, batting determinedly deep in his crease, brought out his bottom-handed swipes. The bowlers obliged by failing in their search for the blockhole and both batsmen began finding the boundaries with ease. When Yuzvendra Chahal was razed for 24 in the 15th over, with three towering sixes, Royal Challengers were rattled beyond recovery. They offered width, full tosses and bungled an easy run-out of Uthappa in the penultimate over to enable 78 runs off the last six overs.Royal Challengers’ hopes were pinned to an 85-run stand between Kohli and Takawale. They needed to balance the construction of a springboard for their finishers with an asking-rate that was persistently above 10. Rotating strike was not a problem and Vinay Kumar was carted for 17 runs in the ninth over to tempt their fans. However, with 26 runs and two wickets coming in the next four overs and 103 needed in the remaining seven, the dire need for big hits overcame the batsmen’s ability.

No segundo tempo o jogo teve o domínio do São Bento.

Danilo Avelar faz autoanálise: melhor lateral do Paulistão e estilo europeu

Aprendi a jogar lá. Minha característica é de europeu. A cultura do brasileiro é driblador, faz aquele espetáculo.

VEJA OUTRAS RESPOSTAS DO LATERAL:

Supreme Court to hear plea against Srinivasan on September 27

India’s Supreme Court will hear on September 27 a plea filed by the Cricket Association of Bihar seeking to restrain BCCI president N Srinivasan from contesting the BCCI elections on September 29. The plea, filed by CAB secretary Aditya Verma on Monday, seeks an interim injunction against Srinivasan that would also prevent him from being a member of any board committee, pending the verdict on an earlier special leave petition (SLP) filed by Verma against the BCCI in July. This is the CAB’s second petition before the Supreme Court. The earlier petition had challenged the Bombay High Court’s order on the BCCI’s inquiry committee investigating corruption in the IPL on the grounds that it had failed to appoint a fresh probe panel. The Supreme Court was due to hear final arguments in the case on September 12 but ran out of time on that day.In fact the Bombay High Court order came on a petition filed by the CAB questioning the constitution of the two-man inquiry committee set up by the BCCI to probe corruption charges in the IPL. Verma had accused Srinivasan of utilising his position as the BCCI president in the setting up of the probe panel and called that unconstitutional. The High Court concluded that there was “a degree of probability” of Srinivasan playing a role in setting up the inquiry panel, and subsequently termed the probe “illegal”.The BCCI then filed its own SLP challenging that order. As a counter, the CAB filed another SLP. The verdict on the petition against the order of the Bombay High Court is still pending in the Supreme Court. The BCCI lawyers had indicated that the CAB SLP would have no immediate repercussions on the board or for Srinivasan. The main intention of the BCCI’s SLP was to clear Srinivasan’s name from allegations, including the Bombay High Court remark which did not rule out his involvement in the appointment of the inquiry panel.
