Lord's could lose out in new staging deal

The MCC’s ambitious plans for a £200 million redevelopment project at Lord’s could be under threat, after the England & Wales Cricket Board revealed they are considering a new staging agreement

Cricinfo staff12-Dec-2008The MCC’s ambitious plans for a £200 million redevelopment project at Lord’s could be under threat, after the England & Wales Cricket Board revealed they are considering a new staging agreement that would guarantee the venue only two Tests in five years from 2012 to 2016.Since 2000, Lord’s – which has the largest capacity of any cricket ground in England with more than 28,000 seats – has successfully bid for two Tests a year, but Keith Bradshaw, the MCC chief executive, told The Daily Telegraph that any prospect of increasing that capacity hinged entirely on continuing their current volume of international cricket.”We are disappointed that the ECB don’t recognise Lord’s as an iconic venue in the same way that Wembley and Twickenham are viewed by football and rugby,” said Bradshaw. “We had big plans to redevelop the ground. If we don’t have assurity of major matches, which underpins future investment, we will have to ask ourselves if those plans are still justified as a major investment.”The ECB’s new plans are intended as an extension of the existing deal, which runs until 2012, and is designed to assist the counties with their financial planning. The intention is for all nine category A grounds to be guaranteed a minimum of 11 days’ international cricket over the course of the five years, although this covers only 50 percent of the games in that period, which means the remainder will be the subject of fierce bidding. The new longer staging agreements have been proposed to the ECB by the independent Major Matches Group, chaired by Lord Morris, and documents were sent out to the counties last week. “This is a step in the right direction,” Jim Cumbes, Lancashire’s chief executive, told the paper. “Without Test match cricket these grounds are just not viable. It is not about making fat profits it is more a matter of being able to support the infrastructure needed to host major international cricket.”

Journalist expects Leander Dendoncker to stay at Wolves

Luke Hatfield, who covers Midlands clubs for the Express and Star, has told The Transfer Tavern that he expects Leander Dendoncker to stay at Wolves this summer.

The Belgian midfielder, who made three appearances at the Euros, has been a key part of the Wanderers setup since joining initially on loan in 2018, and then permanently 12 months later.

Since breaking into the side under Nuno Espirito Santo, Dendoncker has been a mainstay in the Wolves midfield alongside the likes of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho.

But Dendoncker can also play in central defence, which means his versatility could be key with the likes of Conor Coady and Neves both linked away from Molineux.

According to Calciomercato, Wolves have considered offloading the 26-year-old to Roma after some below-par displays last season, although he’s featured in pre-season and therefore could be in line to start against Leicester on the opening day this weekend.

With other players futures in doubt, Hatfield told The Transfer Tavern he doesn’t expected him to be sold:

“He’s a very versatile player. Wolves fans were frustrated with some of his performances, but playing central defence and midfield, gets himself about.

“He’s so important to Wolves, and if Neves was meant to go, he would be incredibly important. You’ve got Joao Moutinho, who’s no spring chicken, you can’t see him playing 38 Premier League games, so I’d be surprised if they let Leander Dendoncker go.”

Martial let Solskjaer down vs the Saints

Manchester United failed to build on their emphatic opening day victory over the weekend after Southampton held them to a draw on the south coast.

The Red Devils entered Sunday’s encounter as big favourites following their 5-1 demolition of Leeds last time out, but a much-improved performance from Ralph Hassenhuttl’s charges upset the odds.

A quick start from United soon faded, and the Saints began to pile to pressure on their visitors, resulting in a deflected Che Adams strike spinning off Fred’s outstretched leg into the corner of David de Gea’s net on the half-hour mark.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side came out after the half-time break with more purpose, and it only took 19-year-old Mason Greenwood 10 minutes to level the score.

However, United’s frustrating display continued, with every fluid, exciting, attacking move seemingly being undermined by a mistake in the centre of the pitch or in defence.

One player epitomised their infuriating performance more than most, though. Anthony Martial was given a chance to impress in the central striking role due to Edinson Cavani’s enforced absence, but the Frenchman failed to deliver.

As per SofaScore, the £40.5m-rated forward received a match rating of just 6.2 out of 10 for the 59 minutes he was on the pitch, the lowest rating awarded to any United player.

Martial struggled to get into the game at St. Mary’s, touching the ball just 13 times in total, 10 fewer than goalkeeper De Gea. The former Monaco ace also managed only one shot before being substituted, failing to hit the target all afternoon.

After winning just 40% of his duels, losing possession five times and being caught offside twice, Martial made way for summer-signing Jadon Sancho just before the hour mark, and he may find himself on the bench once again next week.

The enigmatic forward was linked with an Old Trafford exit in previous weeks, something Solskjaer said wouldn’t happen, but the Norwegian manager may be left regretting backing the 25-year-old so vehemently after his latest shocking display.

And, in other news…Man Utd could finally replace RVP with £141k-p/w “phenomenon”, fans would be buzzing

Too early to assess Mendis – Jenner

Ajantha Mendis picked up 17 wickets in the Asia Cup last month © AFP

Terry Jenner, the former Australian legspinner who mentored Shane Warne, has said while Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis is an exciting prospect, it is too early to assess him.Mendis, who picked up 17 wickets in the Asia Cup last month, including two five-wicket hauls, has had batsmen confounded by his mixture of googlies, offbreaks, top-spinners, flippers and legbreaks. But Jenner said it still had to be seen whether Mendis had the variation of pace to bowl in Tests.”We don’t know yet, but that’s where [Anil] Kumble has been fantastic, particularly over the last five years,” said Jenner, who was in Chennai for a coaching clinic for young spinners at the MAC Spin Foundation.Jenner, also said that though the Indian Premier League was fantastic for a lot of reasons, it did not help in the development of young players. “It’s a mature-age spinner’s game, not a developing spinner’s. When I watch Harbhajan [Singh] bowl yorkers at 100 kph, it’s clever, but where’s the development?”Switching between formats, Jenner said, was very difficult. “From my experience, when a spinner starts pushing it through, he starts to lose the ability to spin it. Twenty20 serves a purpose with the entertainment, but it mustn’t encroach on Test cricket.”

Likes and dislikes ruining cricket team's performance

With talent in abundance, Pakistan cricket team which is perhaps the best on paper in the world looks demoralised because of the total mess in the management

Ali Kabir12-Sep-2002With talent in abundance, Pakistan cricket team which is perhaps the best on paper in the world looks demoralised because of the total mess in the management. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is being run simply on personal whims of the establishment totally ignoring the potential of the players and selection or appointment of team officials who are simply either incompetent or have no say whatsoever in its functioning or policy making decisions. Whatever may be the reason, in nutshell the team’s performance is proof enough of all-round deterioration. The team’s performance at Tangiers (Morocco) and Nairobi in the just concluded tri-nation competition exposed the intentions and calibre of all those who are associated with the team and those who are at the helm of affairs. The responsibility cannot be put only on the team management or the establishment. If one cares to do postmortem of the recent events, which is a must and if someone cares to improve the things, it is evident that there is unnecessary interference from some quarters which is adversely affecting the team’s performance. The role in the overall performance of the team shows that personal likes and dislikes is governing the policy of the PCB. If national interest is dear to anyone, this factor should never be allowed to creep in. The problem is that it has become the governing factor. Those who talk of merit are living in a fool’s paradise at least in the present PCB setup.Every move of the establishment is manoeuvred which has plagued the board. Nobody in the PCB seems to be sincere or loyal to the game. If there would have been sincere people, they would not have allowed sports vultures to hang around. What is the contribution of individuals like Zakir Hussain Syed to cricket. He was offered a lucrative job of secretary, Asian Cricket Council and unconfirmed reports suggest that a situation is being created to adjust him somewhere in the PCB hierarchy.Presence of a few shady characters in Morocco has given new dimensions to rumours that Pakistan lost some of the matches in Tangiers under suspicious circumstances. May be someone sensing rift in the team and being present on the scene made full use of the situation. The Kenya episode, which resulted in Yousuf Youhana being sent home was the overflow of happening in Morocco which was covered up under the guise of fitness problem of the batsman. Can the PCB explain how come Youhana went for an MRI test without the consent of the team doctor. It was all doctored and nothing else. The present PCB setup has a set plan to have only ‘yes’ men or paid employees who dare not raise their finger on any issue. It adopted the policy of having paid selectors and perhaps the PCB chief himself was the worst sufferer when his yes men dare not pinpoint the fault of Junaid Zia’s bowling action. The result was that Junaid was called for chucking on four occasions. Team coach Haroon Rasheed failed to show any wisdom by not pointing out the problem with Junaid’s action after the first call. But, Haroon was more interested in his bread and butter than anything else. The present chairman of the selection committee, Wasim Bari, a gentleman cricketer, just cannot afford to put his foot down and at times he is not even aware of team selection. The PCB is in dire need of men of the stature of Haseeb Ahsan who despite having best relations with the then BCCP chief, Air Marshal (Retd) Nur Khan refused to select, player of the calibre of former Pakistan captain, Imran Khan, purely on medical grounds and stepped down, totally ignoring his relationship with Nur Khan. When Haseeb toured England with the Pakistan team as manager, the British press which is always out to run down visiting teams was perhaps most respectful. Then we have a man in Naushad Ali, who is a clean man and has managed the Pakistan team, is a former Chairman of the Selection Committee and a former ICC match referee with good reputation. But such people cannot be inducted in the board as they are men of principle and would work with full freedom without any interference. Nobody can doubt their credibility and credentials. There are some other people but they do not suit the present management who want to meddle in everything and are responsible for the present mess up.The latest action of the PCB in retaining Shoaib Malik and sending back Azhar Mahmood is simply disgusting. Shoaib Malik is being rated as a better off-spinner than Saqlain Mushtaq and a better batsman than Saeed Anwar. So much so that the PCB toyed with the idea of promoting him as an opener. Shoaib Malik scored two hundreds in one-dayer which gave boost to the manipulators to promote him in the batting order. The whole effort fired back as whenever he went to open the innings he played dot balls, resulting in increased pressure on the team. He only wanted to secure his place in the team caring hoots for the team interest. He failed as a bowler when in three matches he just bowled one over for 15 runs. In the last match against Australia he scored 37 from 94 balls which totally belied the PCB hierarchy’s doctrine. If anyone from Nairobi had to be sent home, it should have been Shoaib Malik, the worst performer on the present form and not Azhar Mahmood who has been declared unfit, a reasoning which is hard to challenge as neither the player nor the team doctor will support for obvious reasons. Those who follow the game must be surprised with the way the present management is handling Shahid Afridi, who holds the world record of scoring fastest century in one-day. The team management is toying with his batting position. He has batted at No. 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 and last time he was sent to open the innings. Can anybody in his senses ever make such decision unless there is some motive behind it.Misbah-ul-Haq, who has been unlucky in the past at last got a chance when the team management was left with no option and he slapped in the face of the establishment by scoring 50, 39 and 50. What was the team of so many experts travelling with the squad doing all along. All the team officials should be kicked out and fresh team of management should be inducted. But nothing will change as long there is interference from the top. Unless everyone who is given a particular assignment has a free hand which at the moment seems impossible. What has been the benefit of specialist, trainers imported from Australia for batting, bowling and fielding.Pakistan sports in general and cricket in particular is on decline and one cannot expect any improvement unless we do away with the politics of regionalism, nepotism and ‘sifarish’ and work with the sole aim of promoting national interest, keeping personal interest at a distance. No doubt it is easy to preach than practice but nothing is impossible if there is sincerity and loyalty to the nation which should not be compromised.

The nucleus of India's World Cup team is in place

The nucleus of India’s World Cup team is already in place

Partab Ramchand15-Jul-2002The nucleus of India’s World Cup team is already in place. This is the point brought home loud and clear in the wake of India’s notable triumph in the NatWest series. Even though the tournament is some seven months away, there is very little scope for change in the side. This outfit should, more or less, be persevered with and given all encouragement till then.
©CricInfoSo let us first propose a vote of thanks to the following for a job accomplished in style. Let us salute Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif and their youthful bravado. Let us sing the praises of Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid who came good so often during the fortnight long tournament. Give credit to the bowlers, Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble and the bit players for sticking to their task in exemplary fashion.A word of praise is in order for Dravid the wicket-keeper too for doing a competent job, given the fact that he is not a specialist and has had the task thrust upon him as part of a controversial compromise. And can one forget Sourav Ganguly the captain and John Wright the coach? And yes, even Chandu Borde and his much-maligned selection committee for picking a well-balanced outfit that, for once, performed up to potential.I had mentioned in an earlier column that the Indian team was simply outstanding with the bat and ball and in the field and they were looking good enough to beat England in the final. But I had also spoken of the many times India had peaked too early and raised great expectations, only to falter at the final hurdle. Nine successive defeats in the finals of various tournaments over the last couple of years was really too much to swallow. And yet, striking an optimistic note, I had said that I could not see this happening at Lord’s on Saturday. And so it proved. With one stroke, as it were, the dubious reputation of being chokers was wiped out. Also, no longer can India now be classed as poor chasers. When a team successfully goes after a daunting victory target of 326 – the second highest in the history of one-day internationals – it deserves every plaudit. The razzle-dazzle show put up by the team had the spectators cheering and shouting for more. Very rarely have we seen such an effervescent showing by India. A record of five wins, one defeat and one no result is in itself a matter for congratulations. But it was the manner in which the team performed that attracted considerable attention. The batting and bowling did well in unison, the fielding touched great heights and there was a lot of creativity, a lot of improvisation displayed by the players. But even with these instinctive touches, it was obvious there was also a lot of thinking and planning being done. The team itself was an ideal blend of youth and experience and with both playing their roles in exemplary fashion, perhaps the extraordinary showing in the tournament was not a surprise. What did come as a surprise was the Indians successfully reaching a Himalayan target of 326. Even granting the fact that their showing until the final was the stuff that champions are made of, such an imposing task was thought to be well beyond them. But the way they approached the task showed how mentally strong the team has become.Even a middle-order collapse did not deter them from their objective and they emerged triumphant from what was virtually a hopeless position. So often have we seen India throw away matches they have been poised to win. What a pleasant surprise then to be witness to the team snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.A word about Mohammad Kaif would seem to be in order. I don’t mind admitting that I was never really satisfied with his selection for the one-day team. His approach and his technique seemed to be tailor-made for Test cricket, much like in the case of Shiv Sundar Das or Wasim Jaffer. But he has bridged the gap admirably and I would like to think that he has done it successfully because he has a very sound match temperament. There was always this lurking feeling that he was too correct a batsman to come good in the slam-bang variety. But one had only to see him bring off the most dazzling strokes in what was undoubtedly a crisis on Saturday to be convinced of this.
©CricInfoAs for Yuvraj Singh, there has never been any doubt about his ability or confidence. Here is a youngster with the right attitude and one who deserves to be persevered with, even if he goes through occasional failures. If there were still any doubts as to Ganguly being a passionate leader, Saturday’s events would have erased them. The man is deeply involved with Indian cricket, his association with his team members goes beyond leading them.Taking off his shirt and swinging it over his head in sheer, unbridled joy is a sight that could have the purists at the game’s headquarters wincing but that spontaneous gesture, as well as his rushing out and jumping at Kaif and hugging him so as to bring the latter down in a manner that would make a professional wrestler proud were sights that symbolised the sheer joy of being an Indian cricketer follower on Saturday. When the team is not doing well, the pain and anguish is writ large on his face. Similarly, the emotion and intensity were all too palpable when he proudly lifted the trophy. In moments of triumph, it is important not to lose perspective. Credit must be given where it is due, but some questions have to be raised. While it was a great feat chasing such an imposing target, one must also ask why so many runs were given away in the first place. After all, it is not going to be easy to go after such daunting totals every time. Certainly the bowling was found wanting in the final. And one wonders why Harbhajan was played instead of Agarkar, who had done so well and is a good bet in English conditions. And Rahul Dravid keeping wickets instead of the specialist Ajay Ratra (who is also a handy bat) is still an uncomfortable compromise. Overall, the batting remains our trump card but there is need to tone up the bowling. Once this is done, India could even be serious contenders for the World Cup.

West Ham fans flock to Hlozek claim

Many West Ham United fans have been talking on Twitter after The Athletic shared news on Sparta Prague striker Adam Hlozek.

The exciting 18-year-old has left his mark on football in the Czech Republic this year and is regarding as a very promising forward, scoring 15 goals in all competitions for Sparta over 2020/2021 (Transfermarkt).

Still only a teenager, the 6 foot 2 frontman has already amassed six caps for his country and has even played at Euro 2020 against England.

He has been mentioned as a possible target for the Hammers this summer with The Athletic now sharing some interesting news when it comes to Hlozek.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They claim that West Ham stars Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Soucek both personally recommended the signing of their compatriot to Irons boss David Moyes, but the Scotsman’s stance remains unclear.

He is currently valued at around £20 million, but West Ham supporters are certainly eager for their club to swoop in response to this news.
