'Dinosaur' – Celtic's former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers blasted for calling female reporter 'good girl'

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has come under fire for a recent interview in which he condescendingly said to a female reporter "good girl".

Rodgers in irritated mood after Motherwell matchFinished interview with "good girl" remarkHas come under fire for "dinosaur"-like comment(C)Getty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

An irate Rodgers shared his thoughts with the 's Jane Lewis after Celtic's last-gasp win over Motherwell on Sunday. The win put the Hoops within two points of rivals Rangers at the top of the table, but Rodgers responded to that title talk by saying "the story has already been written about this group, but we will write our own story”. When pressed by Lewis to explain that remark, the Celtic boss replied sharply "You know exactly what I mean".

Further questions by the journalist were met with an annoyed "No, no, no" from Rodgers before he promptly shut down the interview, cutting Lewis off by saying: "Okay, done. Good girl. Well done, cheers.”

AdvertisementWHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Following Rodgers' outdated remark, two women's groups have come out to criticise the former Liverpool and Leicester boss.

Scottish Feminist Network said in a statement: “Jane Lewis was just doing her job today, trying to extract an explanation from Brendan Rodgers on his cryptic comment. That the go-to attitude of a manager of a winning team was condescension is quite illuminating but really very depressing in 2024. We thought dinosaurs were extinct.”

For Women Scotland urged Rodgers echoed those thoughts, stating: “It’s depressing that casual sexism is still embedded in sport. Women’s achievements are underrated and dismissed, and their professional status undermined. Rodgers owes the reporter an apology.”

Getty Images THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rodgers' comments, while wholly inexcusable, reflect the high-pressure situation he finds himself in at Celtic. The Hoops were minutes away from slipping to a shock defeat to ninth-placed Motherwell before Adam Idah and Luis Palma rescued all three points in stoppage time. That 3-1 win means Celtic are now two points off arch-rivals Rangers, who are looking to end their two-year wait without a league trophy, and win only their second SPL title in 13 years.

RODGERS NOT ALONE

Rodgers isn't the only manager in recent times to be called out for sexist comments. Gordon Strachan told a female reporter in 2009 that she wouldn't understand his Celtic side's shock cup defeat to St Mirren, saying "it would be like you explaining childbirth to me". Current West Ham boss David Moyes risked being sacked from his role as Sunderland manager in 2017 by warning a female reporter: "You still might get a slap, even though you're a woman".

Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and the 12 players Man Utd must sell this summer to pay for a new striker

Erik ten Hag wants to add a No.9, but has limited funds after signing Mason Mount, with the only solution to cash in on a number of his squad players

Manchester United's need for a striker could not have been more obvious as they stumbled through the final few weeks of last season. As it became increasingly clear Wout Weghorst was incapable of scoring, Erik ten Hag's side had to rely on a worn-out Marcus Rashford and a half-fit Anthony Martial to get them over the line in their bid for Champions League qualification.

Ten Hag made his feelings clear about the need for a striker but, one month after the season came to an end, the only new player to have arrived at Old Trafford is midfielder Mason Mount, burning a £60 million ($76m) hole in an already tight budget. The Red Devils have a maximum of £120m ($153m) to spend this summer due to the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability rules, and they also need to sign a goalkeeper after doing a U-turn on a new contract for David de Gea.

It could take around £50 million ($63m) to get No.1 'keeper target Andre Onana from Inter, which would mean maxing out the budget with no new striker to show for it. But there is a way out of United's spending dilemma, and that is to sell players.

The club have been notoriously imprudent when it comes to selling players, pocketing a mere £133m ($170m) since 2013, the lowest of their fellow Premier League 'Big Six' teams and in stark contrast to Chelsea, who have earned £706m ($901m) from sales in the same period.

But United have plenty of players they can make money from, and selling them wisely is key to regenerating Ten Hag's squad. GOAL takes a look at who they can sell and for how much…

    Jadon Sancho (£50m)

Sancho has fallen way short of what was expected from him after his £73m move from Borussia Dortmund. In two seasons and 79 appearances, he has contributed just 12 goals and six assists. It is a remarkable drop off from his time in Germany, when he scored 50 goals and provided 64 assists in 137 matches.

His second season at Old Trafford was no easier than his first, and despite making a good start by scoring against Liverpool, his confidence faded and Ten Hag removed him from the squad for over two months to work on his fitness and confidence.

There were some flashes of the Sancho who Dortmund fans knew and loved, but tangible, important contributions were few and far between. United know they will make a loss on Sancho if they do sell him, and if an offer in the region of £50m arrives they will surely bite.

    Harry Maguire (£40m)

Maguire played in fewer than half of United's league games last season, making only eight starts. And when he did play, he oftenstruggled badly. His stock has fallen so much that he has fallen to fifth-choice centre-back,even dropping behind left-back Luke Shawin the pecking order.

He is ill-equipped for the type of football Ten Hag wants United to play, but his career at the top level is by no means over. He remains first-choice for England despite everything that has happened this season, and he would have plenty of takers from mid-level clubs in the Premier League.

United will have to swallow their pride and admit they made a mistake making Maguire the most expensive defender in the world in 2019. But if they can make back even half of that fee then they should take it, especially as he has two years left on his contract.

  • Getty Images

    Scott McTominay (£35m)

McTominay saw his playing time severely squeezed by the arrivals of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro, starting only 10 league games in 2022-23. And just when he was starting to get back in contention for a starting berth in April, he got injured. The arrival of Mount, even if not a like-for-like replacement, has seen him drop yet further down the pecking order.

But the Scotland midfielder has been in sensational form for his country, scoring five goals in his last four international appearances. He is still a player in demand and, at 26, has a fine career ahead of him.

Even though it would hurt to let one of their own go, a fee of between £30m and £40m would likely be enough to persuade United to part with McTominay.

    Anthony Martial (£15m)

Since returning from a disappointing loan spell at Sevilla, Martial has proved two things most United fans already knew. Firstly, that he remains a quality player on his day, scoring six Premier League goals from only 11 starts. But secondly, that he is incapable of staying fit for long periods.

The Frenchman, who United paid £50m for in 2015, suffered five injuries last season, missing a total of 27 matches and never once completing 90 minutes. His frail fitness means that he is not much use as a back-up striker, and he missed the FA Cup final after suffering a hamstring injury in the final league game of the season.

Although it has been reported the club are looking for £25m for Martial, his long-running injury problems and the fact he only has one year left on his contract means his sell-on value is fading fast. An offer of £15m should be enough to convince the club to sell.

Getty ImagesFranco Baresi (Inter)

All Franco Baresi wanted to do was follow in his brother's footsteps. However, when he had a trial with Giuseppe's club, Inter, he was rejected for being too small.

"They said, 'Well, come back next year.' But my coach took me to Milan, and there I was accepted, although it took a couple of trials.

"They were worried about my size, that I wouldn't grow much, or toughen up. I was only 14 at the time."

Milan nonetheless decided to sign Baresi and they were rewarded for doing so.

He both grew up and toughened up as he developed into arguably the most ruthless and intelligent defender the game has ever seen, the cornerstone of the great Milan side of Arrigo Sacchi.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesGianluigi Buffon (AC Milan)

Just months after deciding to try his luck in goal, the 13-year-old Gianluigi Buffon was being courted by three Serie A sides: Bologna, AC Milan and Parma.

All three invited the Carrara native for a trial. Bologna were unconvinced despite taking two separate looks at him. Milan, meanwhile, had no doubts and even sent Buffon's parents a contract to sign.

However, after visiting the Rossoneri's academy accommodation, they decided against sending their son so far away from home.

As a result, when Parma goalkeeping coach Ermes Fulgoni immediately pushed the club to sign Buffon, his parents were only too happy to allow him to move to the Tardini, where he would break into the first team at just 17.

His first opponents as a professional? Milan, of course. Buffon kept a clean sheet, denying Roberto Baggio & Co. with one spectacular save after another. A star had been born.

Getty ImagesDidier Drogba (Arsenal)

No list of missed opportunities in the transfer market would be complete without Arsene Wenger, who has claimed to have pursued nearly every top player over the past two decades.

From Lionel Messi to Kylian Mbappe — the Arsenal boss had a look at them all. Wenger's biggest regret, though, is probably Didier Drogba, for three reasons.

Firstly, the Frenchman had a clear run at the powerful Ivorian attacker. Secondly, he could have signed him for a pittance.

"We watched Drogba very carefully when he was at Le Mans and his value was just £100,000," the Gunners manager explained.

"But we felt at the time he might not be completely ready. Looking back now, of course it was a mistake."

A colossal one at that, because the third reason why Drogba ranks as Wenger's biggest regret is that the striker went on to spend a significant chunk of his time at Chelsea tormenting one Arsenal centre-half after another.

Getty ImagesPaul Gascoigne (Manchester United)

While every other entry in our list left the club wondering about what might have been, in the case of Paul Gascoigne, it was the player who was left racked by regret.

The gifted English midfielder had agreed to leave his beloved Newcastle for Manchester United in the summer of 1988 and Alex Ferguson went off on holiday to Malta a happy manager, only for Tottenham to change everything by offering to buy his parents a house.

"What are you waiting for?!" his dad exclaimed. Then, his sister requested a sunbed before his father asked for a car to go in his new home's garage.

Spurs ceded to all of the family's demands and 'Gazza' ended up at White Hart Lane rather than Old Trafford.

"I think it was a bad mistake," Alex Ferguson later mused, "and Paul admits it. We had a structure of players who could have helped him and it could have given him some discipline."

Instead, Gascoigne achieved a level of fame at Italia 90 which he never managed to deal with, leading to a career and life blighted by behavioural and alcohol problems.

Confident Bangladesh out to bust World T20 ghosts

A resurgent Bangladesh team set out for the World T20 to prove they belong at the top level, after strong performances against the best teams at home

Mohammad Isam08-Mar-2016Big pictureTen hours after finishing an emotionally-charged Asia Cup final, Bangladesh flew off to New Delhi from Dhaka before taking a chartered flight to Dharamsala. Abu Hider even posted a selfie on Facebook with bowling coach Heath Streak to confirm their arrival. It has been their most whirlwind schedule in recent memory, especially between two major tournaments.Captain Mashrafe Mortaza said he hoped such a situation, which would involve looking out for each other, would pull the team closer. Bangladesh has certainly played as a unit since the 2015 World Cup, when they were pushed against the wall. The whole year has gone well for them in ODIs, but now they have to carry that confidence and form into the T20 format.Mortaza and coach Chandika Hathurusingha have solved the batting-order puzzle to an extent, although their thinking has occasionally gone awry. Case in point was the Asia Cup final, where Mahmudullah was left too late in a 15-over dash. However, the promotion of Sabbir Rahman to no. 3 means that their top three batsmen are all natural big-hitters.The pace-bowling unit has also worked so far. Despite Mustafizur Rahman’s fitness still a concern, he is likely to play a role in the qualifying stage in Dharamsala. Taskin Ahmed’s pace and consistency coupled with Al-Amin Hossain’s impressive starts with the ball bodes well for the side.Still, Mortaza will be required to tie up loose ends with Arafat Sunny providing another run-saving option. What Bangladesh must be worried about is the form of Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan, having had an under-par year. Shakib’s bowling, too, will be crucial to the balance of the team combination. Mahmudullah’s form has been heartening, especially as a late hitter, an area where Bangladesh have often struggled in T20s. Nurul Hasan could come in handy at that stage too.Bangladesh will have to use their strengths to beat Netherlands, Ireland and Oman. A slip-up could cost them T20 progress.Road to the World T20Bangladesh have won seven and lost seven in 14 completed T20Is since the 2014 World T20. Recently, they drew T20I series’ against Zimbabwe – 1-1 in November and 2-2 in January – and finished as runners-up in the Asia Cup.At the helmBangladesh’s T20 fortunes revolve around the leadership pair of the captain Mortaza and Hathurusingha. While Mortaza had a more hands-on role in ODI planning, Hathurusingha has tinkered around with their T20 make-up to find the ideal combination.Key statBangladesh’s preparatory period before the 2016 World T20 trumps those before the 2012 and 2014 competitions for one reason: beating Pakistan and Sri Lanka, two higher-ranked sides.Mahmudullah’s finishing abilities with the bat has given Bangladesh another potent weapon for the World T20•Associated PressLeading menMahmudullah has given Bangladesh a great finish with the bat in four consecutive innings in the Asia Cup.Taskin Ahmed has done the same with the ball, especially in the final, where he conceded less than five runs an over during India’s assault.Sabbir Rahman has grabbed his chances after being promoted to No 3 and has been the team’s most consistent run-getter in the nine T20Is this year.Burning questionAfter finishing as runners-up in the Asia Cup, can Bangladesh go past the first round to prove their recent progress in T20s isn’t a fluke? In their Own Words”We now have to start from scratch, even though we played in the Asia Cup final because we have to qualify for the main stage of the World T20. We have to be mentally strong.”World T20 historyBangladesh have only done well in the inaugural tournament in 2007, when they beat West Indies to move into the second round. They qualified for the main competition in 2014, but not before being shocked by a defeat against Hong Kong.

Root century leads England to fine victory

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJoe Root’s third ODI century of the year helped England to a five-wicket victory in Pallekele and maintained their hopes of winning the series against Sri Lanka.Root came to the crease after the loss of two early wickets and with his side facing a familiar nemesis: a trial by spin on a dry pitch. But he exuded calm and skill, provided deft touches and powerful blows, and ran like a whippet between the wickets. In partnership with the equally impressive James Taylor, he made light of a testing total and took England to victory with five balls to spare. It was the highest successful run-chase in an ODI on the ground.Sri Lanka still lead 3-2 with two games to play but England will take great confidence from this side as they look towards the World Cup. Not only did they keep their nerve in spin-friendly conditions in which they have little pedigree, but the chase was built upon the performances of young players with many years in front of them.Taylor, with his second half-century in succession, and Root, with an unbeaten 104, added 104 for the third-wicket. Whereas, in the past, England’s crease-bound batsmen have become bogged down against spin, Taylor and Root were prepared to skip down the pitch and disrupt the bowlers’ lengths, rotating the strike well and punishing the poor ball when appropriate.Taylor led the way. Wonderfully fleet of foot and far more willing to come down that pitch than many of his England colleagues, his ability to find gaps and push for singles rendered it impossible for Sri Lanka to build pressure. And, given any fault in length or width, he showed the power and skill to punish the ball. Tillakaratne Dilshan was driven for six over long-on when the bowler offered flight and, when the inevitable quicker delivery came, Taylor scooped it down to fine-leg for four. They may have kissed a few frogs on the way to finding a new ODI No. 3 – Taylor is the ninth man tried in the position since the departure of Jonathan Trott – but it seems England have finally found their prince.

Herath out of series

  • Rangana Herath will play no further part in the ongoing ODI series against England after scans revealed a grade two hamstring tear in his left thigh.
  • The injury was sustained at training on Tuesday, and it further clouds his participation in the first Test against New Zealand, which begins on Boxing Day. Though Herath had already been doubtful for that Test owing to personal reasons, he is not necessarily ruled out of the first Test yet. “The hamstring tear is expected to take two to three weeks to recover from, but there is a chance Herath could play in the first Test, because sometimes the recovery can be quick,” team manager Michael de Zoysa said.
  • Sri Lanka have plenty of spin cover in the ODI series, but Herath absence will be a significant blow for the Test team, who have relied on him for wickets and control, both home and away. Herath took 14 wickets in Sri Lanka’s most recent Test, against Pakistan, and has been Sri Lanka’s best bowler in series in Australia and South Africa, in recent years.
  • Sri Lanka are scheduled to finish the fifth Test against England on Thursday afternoon, before playing to more games – one each in Pallekele and Colombo. The team leaves for the two-Test and seven-ODI tour of New Zealand on December 18.

Though his departure – pulling straight to deep backward square leg – provided some hope for Sri Lanka, a sensible and unhurried partnership of 86 in 18.5 overs between Root and Ravi Bopara all but ended the contest. It is Root’s calm that is most impressive. While other players might fret over scoreless periods – he scored only two from his first 13 balls – Root backs himself to accelerate once set and has a range of strokes that provide enough scoring options to give the scoreboard moving. While most of his boundaries came from his cuts, pulls or slog-sweeps – including the six he thumped to bring up his century from 115 balls – his ability to run the ball to third man or drive through cover off the back foot renders it hard for bowlers to control him.The only cloud on the horizon was the continuing poor form of their captain, Alastair Cook. Reprieved on 8 – replays showed that, had Sri Lanka asked for a review, he would have been out leg before to Sachitra Senanayake – Cook, who came back into the side in place of Alex Hales having served a one-match suspension for England’s slow over-rate in the third ODI, was unable to take advantage. Lunging at the ball, with his head falling away, he was never convincing and finally fell to an innocuous delivery that drifted on to his front pad. He has now made one half-century in his last 20 ODI innings and gone 43 innings and 30 months since he reached 80.At that stage, England were 35 for 2. But, in the absence of Lasith Malinga and Rangana Herath, Sri Lanka lacked the bowlers to exploit England’s nerves or the conditions and, with their fielding remaining shoddy, were unable to build any pressure.Sri Lanka could take some comfort from the return of Senanayake. The offspinner was reported for a suspect action during Sri Lanka’s tour of England and was suspended from bowling in July. But after remodelling his action and undergoing tests at the ICC-accredited facility in Chennai last month, was cleared for a return by the ICC on Tuesday and, barely 48 hours later, found himself back in the Sri Lanka side in place of Herath (who has a hamstring injury) and opening the bowling. Here, with a markedly different action – conventional and beyond reproach – he did not gain much spin, but he did bowl with impressive control and dismiss the dangerous Moeen Ali early, missing with an ugly slog-sweep.But this was not the most impressive display from Sri Lanka with the bat, the ball or in the field. They may reflect that they simply did not score enough runs. Although Kumar Sangakkara’s calm innings provided respectability, he lacked support with Kusal Perera again falling early (he has now failed to reach double-figures in seven of his last 10 ODI innings and, in four of the last eight, he has been dismissed in the first over) and Angelo Mathews top-edging a pull.Mahela Jayawardene, drawn into pushing at one outside off from Chris Woakes, edged to a well-positioned wide slip position – a nice piece of captaincy from Cook – and while Thisara Perera bashed 27 from 17 balls, Sri Lanka were bowled out with an over of their allocation left unused.Woakes finished with 6 for 47 – the first five-for by an England bowler in an ODI in Sri Lanka and the best figures by an England bowler in ODIs against Sri Lanka – and took five wickets in his last 17 deliveries as Sri Lanka, heaving to the outfield and missing slogs, collapsed from 199 for 5 to 239 all out.It was not a perfect performance by England. The 15 wides they delivered here took their total in the five match series to 56 so far and the Cook conundrum will continue to hang over them. But with younger players such as Root, Taylor and Woakes beginning to settle-in, they can look to the World Cup with just a little more confidence.
