ICC clears air over PCB's claims

The ICC today confirmed it had responded formally by rejecting the legal claims initiated last week by the PCB concerning the hosting of the 2011 World Cup matches

The ICC has rejected the legal claims initiated last week by the PCB over the shifting out from Pakistan of the 2011 World Cup matches scheduled to be held in that country. A statement issued by its chief executive Haroon Lorgat, which sought to clarify “factual inaccuracies and misunderstandings” in the PCB’s claim, pointed out that the ICC had not decided, at its meeting on April 17, to remove the PCB as a co-host of the event but only that the matches assigned to the PCB should be played outside Pakistan. The Pakistan board has adopted a two-pronged legal strategy in response to the ICC’s actions. Last week, it served a legal notice to the ICC; on Tuesday , the PCB asked Michael Beloff, president of the ICC Disputes Resolution Committee, to refer the matter to the Court of Arbitration in Sport in Switzerland. And the next day it filed a case in a Lahore court against the ICC’s decision to move the headquarters of the 2011 World Cup from Lahore to Mumbai. However, Lorgat indicated today the PCB may not have a solid case. “We used our response to clarify inaccuracies and misunderstandings in the PCB’s claim, including confirmation of the fact that the agenda and the board papers for the recent ICC board meetings did very specifically raise the question of whether the 2011 World Cup matches assigned to the PCB as joint hosts should be relocated outside of Pakistan,” he said.”We also pointed out that the ICC board agreed only that the World Cup matches should be moved away from Pakistan, not that the PCB should be removed from its position as a joint host of the event itself. The suggestion the ICC board was not empowered to decide that matches should be moved away from Pakistan and that such a decision was ‘legally flawed’ is also incorrect and without foundation.”Among the PCB’s contentions is the ICC board’s authority to take the decisions – its constitution accords these powers to its commercial arm, the IDI. However, Lorgat said the ICC board had broad powers under its constitution and was not only is it entitled to make a decision on this matter but had a responsibility to do so on behalf of its members.”The World Cup is our flagship event. Given that, we need to deliver a tournament that is safe, secure and, above all, successful and it was on that basis that the decision was taken that matches could not be played in Pakistan.”Lorgat said he was disappointed by the PCB’s exercising its legal options instead of communicating with the ICC and hoped it would withdraw its claims. “We hope it realises that by attempting to pursue the matter through legal channels, it will result in the diversion of funds and resources better served to ensure a safe, secure and successful tournament in 2011, something that will benefit all our members, including Pakistan.”

Liverpool fans love Klopp’s mind games

A number of Liverpool supporters have hailed Jurgen Klopp’s apparent mind games ahead of the Premier League clash with Manchester City.

The Reds face their most important game of the season so far on Sunday, as they welcome reigning champions City to Anfield.

Klopp’s men currently have a one-point cushion over their rivals at the top of the table and a win this weekend could feel significant in the title race.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375258″]

It is an impossible result to call, but history suggests that the two sides could play out a thrilling encounter on Merseyside.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game [via journalist James Pearce on Twitter], Klopp claimed City are the best team in Europe at the moment, perhaps putting a little bit of extra pressure on Liverpool’s opponents.

West Ham blow emerges before Rapid Wien

Taking to Twitter and sharing the latest from West Ham United manager David Moyes, journalist Jack Rosser has relayed what appears to be another injury blow before the Europa League clash against Rapid Vienna tonight.

The Lowdown: Treatment table…

Right-back Ryan Fredericks is already on the treatment table after incurring a repeat of his groin problem in the Carabao Cup victory over Manchester United last week.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments/” title=”West Ham developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The last thing Moyes will want is a recurring injury theme as he prays that most of his key men stay fully fit for what will be a long and gruelling season ahead.

However, it appears that the Scotsman may have been dealt a fresh blow ahead of tonight’s clash with Rapid Vienna in the Europa League.

The Latest: Coufal a ‘doubt’ for West Ham…

As shared by Rosser on social media, Moyes has confirmed that Vladimir Coufal is now a doubt for West Ham’s second group match of their European campaign.

The Czech Republic international’s absence could leave the Irons desperately short in one key area, with their only other senior right-back Fredericks also on the treatment table.

The Evening Standard reporter tweeted on Wednesday: “David Moyes and Declan Rice speaking ahead of Rapid Vienna tomorrow night. Confirms Fredericks is out, Coufal doubtful too so a little short at right-back.”

The Verdict: Big blow…

Depending on the severity of Coufal’s knock, West Ham fans will be hoping that it isn’t anything serious given how crucial he has been since signing last summer.

The 29-year-old, a contender for one of the Premier League’s best full-backs of 2020/21, started 34 top-flight matches in his first season in east London and averaged the joint-most tackles per game (2.1) for the Hammers (WhoScored)

Coufal earned the hearts of Irons supporters with his robust and energetic displays on the right flank last season and it’s safe to say that his presence could be crucial this term as well. Hopefully this is nothing more than just a little niggle.

Celtic: Kieran Devlin drops Osaze Urhoghide claim

Celtic reporter Kieran Devlin has dropped a worrying claim on centre-back Osaze Urhoghide.

The Lowdown: Urhoghide’s Celtic start

Urhoghide was one of 12 summer additions at Celtic Park over the summer, four of which came at centre-back.

He joined from Sheffield Wednesday and cost £207,000 but is yet to feature in a competitive match under Ange Postecoglou, even though he has been in the squad on multiple occasions.

The Celtic boss hailed the 21-year-old in the summer, but it seems as if he is struggling to make an impact at Parkhead.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-14/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Devlin’s claim

Devlin, Celtic’s correspondent for The Athletic, ran a Q&A on the site for the Hoops’ League Cup quarter-final against Raith Rovers.

Prior to the game, one fan staked his claim to see the likes of Urhoghide and other Celtic fringe players feature. Devlin responded and made this claim when it comes to the defender.

“If he was to play a young CB, Bosun Lawal and Dane Murray are apparently ahead of Urhoghide in their development.”

The Verdict: Worrying times?

The latest claim on Urhoghide could be a cause for concern at Parkhead.

He featured heavily towards the end of last season for The Owls, starting 12 of Wednesday’s final 18 second-tier fixtures.

On that basis, you’d have hoped that he would’ve broken into Postecoglou’s plans by now, especially as he was wanted by Premier League clubs before joining Celtic.

Hopefully, it is only a matter of time until Urhoghide makes his competitive debut in green and white, but it doesn’t seem as if it will be this month.

In other news: ‘Hopefully’ – Kieran Devlin shares ‘important’ area Celtic may add to next after McElhone.

Gary Kirsten, the India coach, says the England tour must go on once the security experts have given the all-clear. The England squad flew out of Heathrow on Thursday for Abu Dhabi, where they will remain while waiting for the clearance from ECB officials. Kirsten returns to India this weekend from Cape Town, having received security assurances from the BCCI.”I have had a lot of things to weigh up and it’s obviously a concern with my family in South Africa,” Kirsten told the . “But I am very much part of the India set-up, I enjoy working there and I want to keep the momentum going from the good work we have done recently.”Opinion has been divided over whether England should return to India for the Tests starting next week, but Kirsten felt the tour must go on once the security experts have given the all-clear. “There is no way that security can be guaranteed wherever you are in the world. But you can’t keep saying no. There are terrorism threats everywhere, even the UK is not immune from them,” he said. “But if the professional security people who are paid to make these assessments have given the go-ahead then I think you have to go with it.”However, he said he understood the pressures and concerns of the England players. “They have been given the best advice, it is now a case of whether as an individual you feel comfortable with it,” he said. “Some players will be concerned that if they don’t go then someone else will go instead and so their place will be under threat.”England’s players are scheduled to have two full practice sessions in Abu Dhabi on Saturday and Sunday before a potential trip to India on Monday. Another two sessions would take place in Chennai but there is no time for a warm-up match before facing world cricket’s in-form nation.

Rohit and Kohli frustrate Australians

Rohit Sharma, dropped from India’s squad for the Tests, and Virat Kohli proved they have the patience to play long innings, scoring 105 each to give their team the honours on the first day of the tour match in Hyderabad. Facing their first stern test of the tour, and a flat track, the Australian spinners suffered heavy punishment after the fast bowlers had reduced the Board President’s XI to 59 for 3.Rohit was, without doubt, the star of the day. Two shots showcased his intent. The first came when he was on 67; a long-on had materialised for the offspinner Jason Krejza after Rohit had lofted him over the infield a couple of times. Rohit responded by waltzing down the track to swing the ball over the fielder’s head. The second challenge came on 99. Michael Clarke put on the pressure by firing a few dot balls outside leg stump from over the wicket. Rohit shuffled outside leg and punched it sweetly to the right of mid-off. No violence, just a confident move to get outside the line and find the gap.Rohit took 13 balls before choosing a wide full toss from Krejza to get off the mark, and took a further 33 balls to unfurl his signature cover drive off Peter Siddle. He rushed past his fifty in a Stuart Clark over where he picked up 14 runs with two square cuts and a nonchalant six over long-on. Ricky Ponting immediately attacked with Brett Lee, and Rohit defended. Lee almost broke the stalemate with a lovely slower one that induced a checked drive from Rohit, but the bowler couldn’t hold on despite a lunging effort. When Lee was taken off, Rohit indulged himself against Krejza and Clarke. At the other end, Kohli moved along almost unnoticed. In his last game, the Irani Cup, Zaheer Khan had harassed him by bending back full-length deliveries in the second innings after troubling him with bouncers in the first. In light of that fact, Kohli had it relatively easy today. He crept to 14 from 36 balls against the seamers before hitting his stride against Krejza and Clarke. He created his own length against the slow men – 68 of his runs came against them – by using his feet, and feasted whenever any bowler, seam or spin, erred in line. He played his trademark whips through midwicket, scoring 36 runs in that region, and picked up 35 off cut shots. The wagon wheel also told the tale of Australia’s bowling. Krejza and Clarke were, unsurprisingly, without guile, turn or bite, and erred in line and length as well. Krejza was initially guilty of bowling too full and lost the plot after getting the stick from Rohit and Kohli. The seamers were deployed in a manner that confirmed Ponting’s stated intent of using the game as preparation for the sterner test ahead. Lee bowled only 33 balls against Rohit and Kohli, and Clarke had three balls more at them, while Mitchell Johnson, the man under the most pressure to stake his Test claim, bowled 62 balls against the rampaging pair.Lee was his typical self, bowling with pace in the right areas, and terminated Kohli’s stay with a toe-crushing yorker – though it would probably have missed leg stump. Clark, though, didn’t perform at his optimum level. Admittedly the pitch was not conducive to seam bowling, but he didn’t use the old ball well. While Lee mixed in the slower ones, and even Johnson bowled a slow lifting delivery to get rid of Yuvraj Singh, Clark didn’t revel once the shine went off the ball.

The other seamer, Siddle, did what was expected of him. Barring a few times when he was guilty of bowling short, and cut away by Yuvraj and Rohit, Siddle tried to hit the length. He picked up S Badrinath’s wicket with a marginal decision: the ball appeared to be missing leg stump.Johnson had already gone on record with his intent to forget conventional swing and to just stick to “trying to get it through to the keeper”. Unable to bend the ball back in to the right-handers, he bowled fast and straight and punctuated it with short ones. He was perhaps a touch lucky to end up with three wickets. Aakash Chopra was given out lbw when the ball appeared to be missing off stump, Yuvraj was caught in two minds – to pull or not to pull – and Rohit pulled weakly to square leg. But it was a reward for sticking to his original plan of bowling within his limitations.A few Australian strategies did emerge by the end of the day. The stated ploy of setting defensive fields for the Test series was put into operation. A deep point was in place for the seamers for the most part, and a long-on and sweeper cover were stationed for the spinners. Australia showed they had done their homework as well. Two men stood in the deep behind square leg for Wasim Jaffer, who eventually top-edged a hook, and a leg slip materialised for Chopra, who has a penchant to shuffle and tickle short deliveries to fine leg.It worked like a charm in the pre-lunch session before two young batsmen decided to stamp their presence on the proceedings. And how.

Inter e Novo Hamburgo começam a decisão do Gaúcho neste domingo
