Lee Johnson has been handed a double injury boost ahead of Sunderland’s upcoming play-off semi-final.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Johnson hinted that both Tom Flanagan and Ross Stewart could make a return to the matchday squad for the Black Cats’ play-off semi-final against Lincoln City on Wednesday evening.

Stewart had missed the club’s final game of the regular season with a hamstring injury, an issue that also ruled him out of a behind-closed-doors friendly against the club’s U23 side on Friday, while Flanagan has not featured competitively for Sunderland since the Papa John’s Trophy final against Tranmere Rovers, also due to injury.

As cited by the Sunderland Echo, Johnson said: “We played against our U23s and Ross Stewart wasn’t involved in that but we are going to have a look at him over the next couple of days.

“We think he’s OK, and certainly if he gets through the final test, he would be ready to start, if we needed to.

“Tom has trained and it’s obviously something we’ve got to consider. He’s a top character, a top lad and he seems like he’s in good nick.”

Huge boost

With Johnson having lost a number of centre-backs in the closing stages of the season – with on-loan Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Dion Sanderson being ruled out for the rest of the season, in addition to Jordan Willis being sidelined for up to a further year after suffering a setback in his recovery from a knee injury – the news that Flanagan could feature in what is arguably Sunderland’s biggest game of the season so far is likely to leave Johnson buzzing.

Furthermore, while Stewart has not been a regular starter since joining the Black Cats from Ross County back in January, the centre-forward will provide the 39-year-old manager with another attacking option against Lincoln, something that could prove all the difference in the clash.

As such, things appear to be looking up at the Stadium of Light in terms of injuries, something that will undoubtedly provide Johnson and his players with a huge boost ahead of Wednesday’s massive fixture.

Liverpool could be set to make a costly transfer error this summer with the signing of Barcelona’s Pedri.

According to The Mirror, FSG have made their interest in the young Spaniard clear, with Barcelona set to hand him a new contract in an effort to ward off any overtures.

Whilst the 18-year-old is of course a promising talent, bringing him to Anfield would be a mistake.

As it stands, Liverpool do not need any more midfield recruits. Competition for starting berths on Merseyside is incredibly fierce with the likes of Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum, Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, James Milner, Curtis Jones and Jordan Henderson all options.

Judging from just that, it is clear that Klopp does not need any more additions in that department even if Georginio Wijnaldum departs as is expected.

Should Pedri be considered as the Dutchman’s potential replacement at Anfield, it would be somewhat baffling.

According to WhoScored, the current Reds’ midfielder attempts more shots, dribbles and loses the ball on fewer occasions per game this season.

Wijnaldum also has a far better pass completion rate of 92.3% compared to Pedri’s 87.7%.

Whilst it could be argued that the Spaniard will improve being only 18, he is simply not the immediate option that Liverpool require should they harbour ambitions of replacing Wijnaldum in the summer.

The price that it would take to bring Pedri to Anfield should also be enough for FSG to walk away from any potential deal.

At his young age, he is already rated at £63m so it is likely to take a similar fee to be able to prise him out of Barcelona. Considering there are departments that need far more pressing investment in Jurgen Klopp’s squad, spending that amount on a player who is unlikely to be first choice seems unfeasible.

Liverpool then should move on and leave Pedri to sign his new Barca contract instead of pursuing a transfer.

Naturalmente, o time praticamente todo titular do Cruzeiro seria favorito para o jogo e o confronto já virtualmente resolvido. Todavia, esperava-se muito mais de quem barganha vaga de titular.

E dos titulares espera-se mais capacidade de incomodar o lanterna do campeonato do que os jogadores fizeram contra o América-MG, neste sábado. Por mais impressionante que seja a recuperação do Coelho e por mais que Camilo não estivesse bem fisicamente, é preciso mais repertório.

O recado é simples, então: o elenco não é tão bom para garantir a luta pela vaga na Taça Libertadores da América; e os titulares precisam colocar os pés no chão para conseguirem manter o nível que os colocou na primeira página da tabela de classificação.

Rebaixamento é algo que, a passos largos, a equipe caminha para não correr mais riscos matemáticos. De todo modo, a torcida fica decepcionado.

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Howey, who scored 11 goals as a centre-back for Manchester City, claims Jesse Lingard isn’t that good of a player to have made a difference to Newcastle United’s side.

In January, the Magpies were reportedly interested in signing Lingard on a loan deal until the summer, however, he turned down that interest in favour of a move to West Ham United.

Newcastle only brought in one player during the January transfer window as Joe Willock arrived on loan from Arsenal, registering one goal on his debut whereas Lingard has five goals and two assists for the Hammers

Speaking on how Lingard wouldn’t have made an impact at Newcastle and how he made the right choice to join the Hammers, Howey told FFC:

“Jesse Lingard is not that good, he couldn’t carry a full team and I’m not being disrespectful to him because he is a very good player, but he’s not that good.

“You can’t carry the number of players that Newcastle are at the moment and I think that’s the real problem as you could maybe get away with one, maximum two in the Premier League.

“There wasn’t one player against Brighton that I could say, ‘well to be fair, he did alright’. You could possibly say Hayden because he shuts down the play and Dummett does what Dummett always does but the others, ‘wow’.”

The Magpies are currently on a run of just two wins from 20 games and with injuries to Miguel Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson making them a far worse side, so the £75,000 per week Man United loanee may not have been such a bad signing for Newcastle.

David Moyes’ side currently have top-four ambitions which, if achieved, may convince Lingard to sign permanently.
