ScorecardNew Zealand A began the first of their four one-dayers in the UAE with a simple win against the hosts. Carried to 246 by a half-century from opener Martin Guptill, the seamers then combined to ensure UAE fell short by 78 runs.New Zealand A were inserted, and were given a solid platform by the openers Anton Devcich and Guptill. They added 111 before Devcich was caught behind. Guptill, though, completed a half-century, top scoring with 75 off 94 with 11 fours and two sixes. But the rest of the line-up couldn’t really build on that start, with several getting starts but no one else really kicking on as New Zealand were bowled out in the final over. However, UAE were off to a woeful start in the chase, losing three of their top five for ducks, and that meant the target was always beyond them. The only resistance came from Nos. 6 and 7, Shaiman Anwar and Krishna Karate, who both made half-centuries and added 89 for the sixth wicket. New Zealand A’s new-ball pair of Kyle Mills and Adam Milne had done most of the damage at the top, and Daniel Vettori chipped in with a wicket in an economic spell.

Southern Express dealt Dilshan blow

Tillakaratne Dilshan will not play for Southern Express in the Champions League, due to a family commitment, Sri Lanka Cricket has said

Andrew Fidel Fernando11-Sep-2014Tillakaratne Dilshan will not play for Southern Express in the Champions League, due to a family commitment, Sri Lanka Cricket has said. He is the second high-profile player to be absent from the Express’ Champions League campaign, after Lasith Malinga opted to play for Mumbai Indians.”Not having Malinga is a bit of a blow for us as he was a part of the team in Colombo,” Southern Express manager Shane Fernando said. “As far as Dilshan is concerned he didn’t attend the practice and played games. Obviously he is big player and a great batsman. But we have a good balanced side and are looking to do well in the championship.”Though Dilshan had originally been named in the Southern Express squad before the Super Fours tournament took place, he did not feature in that tournament as he was playing for Surrey in the NatWest Blast at the time. He was nevertheless in the 15-man squad the Express named for the CLT20 before he made himself unavailable.Dilshan has been replaced in the Southern Express squad by his brother, Tillakaratne Sampath.

Dimitri Mascarenhas, the former England allrounder, has been appointed as the head coach of Otago Volts on a two-year contract.Mascarenhas, 36, played 34 international matches for England between 2007 and 2009, but enjoyed a successful domestic career, playing for as many as nine franchises including Otago, Hampshire, Melbourne Stars, Hobart Hurricanes, Rangpur Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab, and Wellington. During the course of his 18-year career, he chalked up more than 10,000 runs and 900 wickets across all forms of the game.”I am really excited about the opportunity to be a head coach and am delighted that it is with Otago,” Mascarenhas said. “I really enjoyed my time playing there and believe that the culture within that environment is well-suited to my way of doing things. Otago have fashioned a fantastic record over recent seasons and I look forward to working with the players.”In recent seasons, Mascarenhas has begun the transition to coaching, completing an ECB level three coaching qualification as well as holding player-coach roles with Hampshire, Rajasthan Royals and Hobart Hurricanes. Ross Dykes, the Otago CEO, said the team would gain from the player’s vast experience.”Dimi’s tactical awareness and his ability to build relationships set him apart from a very strong field of candidates,” Dykes said. “His proven ability to work with bowlers and his positive approach to the game make him an ideal coach to partner with Nathan King and take Otago to the next level. It is a huge plus that most of our current squad know and respect Dimi – just as he knows them and their strengths and weaknesses.”Mascarenhas is expected to start the job later in the winter.

Toronto wins ACF's inaugural North American Championship

Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club completed a three-match sweep of Midwest Cricket Conference to win the American Cricket Federation’s inaugural North American Cricket Championship in Phoenix, Arizona on Sunday. TCSCC won the first 40-over match by five wickets on Friday after bowling out MCC for 110 and completed another five-wicket win chasing down MCC’s 259 on Saturday. On Sunday, TCSCC posted a 75-run win to round off an undefeated championship weekend.Raza-ur-Rehman, who was Canada’s leading scorer at the recent ICC World Cup Qualifier in New Zealand, was the top-scorer for TCSCC, with 189 runs including an unbeaten 116 in his side’s victory on Sunday. Former Canada players Rustam Bhatti, Arsalan Qadir and Shaheed Keshvani were also part of the winning team from Toronto.MCC’s leading scorer on the weekend was former USA U-19 captain Abhijit Joshi while former USA senior team players Ashhar Mehdi and Sohail Alvi also represented the MCC squad. Noticeably absent from the MCC team though was batsman Fahad Babar. An ACF press release in January had stated that Babar, who was the leading scorer and league MVP in the Chicago-area league this past year, was expected to play for MCC at the event.Babar was part of USA’s squad at the 2013 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in the UAE and had he chosen to play for MCC in Arizona, he may have run the risk of facing consequences from the USA Cricket Association for playing in what was not a USACA-sanctioned event.Following the conclusion of the tournament, the ACF announced plans for its second North American Cricket Championship to be held at the same Nichols Park Basin turf wicket facility in Arizona again next year from March 6-8.

Kallis set to make ODI return

While South Africa have retained the same strong that swept Pakistan 2-0 in the UAE, Jacques Kallis, the middle-order batsman, is expected to make his ODI return after almost twenty months

Firdose Moonda16-Nov-2013Jacques Kallis is likely to make a return to South Africa’s one-day side after an absence of a year and eight months, in the upcoming series against Pakistan in South Africa. Kallis, who had made clear his intention to represent South Africa in the 2015 World Cup, last played an ODI in February 2012 against New Zealand. He was originally due to make a comeback to the ODI team against India, but when that series was curtailed from seven matches to just three, he instead will turn out against Pakistan for his return. The national selectors have yet to pick the squad but Russell Domingo, South Africa’s coach, said Kallis should be “available to play the one-day series against Pakistan.” If he is, Kallis would probably be a straight swap for Faf du Plessis, who could be given the series off because of its timing.Du Plessis will wed his fiancee, Imari Visser, in Cape Town next Saturday, the day after the two-match Twenty20 series he is to captain, ends, and a day before the three-match one-day series begins. Although both matches are in Cape Town, it is unlikely du Plessis will play the first ODI, but with no honeymoon booked as yet, he could return for the next two games. “We’re still in talks about my availability,” du Plessis said. “I’m not sure how its going to pan out at the moment.”AB de Villiers is one of du Plessis’ best men, but will be available to play in the ODI series, although he may be rested from the T20s. Domingo indicated monitoring Villiers’ workload as a priority over the next few months because of the heavy burden he carries as ODI captain, being a senior batsman and the regular Test wicket-keeper. “He is definitely going to have a break at some stage. He has [been] playing cricket non-stop since he was about nine-years-old,” Domingo said. “He has a lot on his plate so there’s every chance he will get one or two T20s off in the not too distant future.”The amount of international cricket means player management is something all teams are forced to consider, and South Africa are no exception. They gave Dale Steyn the first two ODIs in the UAE off to return home and rejuvenate, and allowed Morne Morkel and JP Duminy to return home before Friday’s second T20 to rest as well. Rotation of this sort will continue although South Africa will also aim to balance that with consistency in selection as they look ahead to next year’s World T20 and the 2015 World Cup.They believe the groups of players they have in both formats at the moment will probably be the same units they take to those tournaments. The combinations have been sorted, and now it’s about making sure they operate as planned, a department where Domingo thinks there is still work to do.”In T20s, our thought processes with the ball [are] not exactly spot on. Although the bowlers did well, we’re still bowling balls to certain fields that we shouldn’t be bowling,” Domingo said. “Batting-wise, Hashim has just restarted his T20 career and he is a work in progress, although he brings a lot of calmness to the team. And then it’s just about our pattern of play and nailing that down properly.”As far as ODI cricket goes, Domingo was pleased with the developments de Villiers made in his captaincy, especially in regards to managing players on the field. The captain himself admitted he has settled in now and is happy with what he sees around him. “We have a lot of depth. We’ve seen guys like Wayne Parnell coming in and doing well and he is almost coming [in] from the outside so it shows you that there is good depth,” de Villiers said. “I am very happy with the group of players we have now. I don’t think it will change too much for the World Cup.”South Africa have chosen to retain the winning combination that swept Pakistan 2-0 in the recently concluded T20 series in UAE.T20 squad: Faf du Plessis (capt.), Hashim Amla, Henry Davids, Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Ryan McLaren, David Miller, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Aaron Phangiso, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, David Wiese.

Karthik wants to fire as specialist batsman

Such is MS Dhoni’s value as a player, it takes two men to replace him. But while one of the talking points of this tour has been how well Virat Kohli might fill Dhoni’s shoes as captain, rather fewer people have been discussing Dinesh Karthik’s merits as a wicketkeeper-batsman.If Karthik had it his own way, however, his keeping wouldn’t be a factor. Of all people, Karthik knows that the keeper’s gloves belong to Dhoni for the foreseeable future and so he has set his sights on proving his worth as a batsman for India in all three formats.”It’s not something I’ve ever felt bad about because I feel it’s a great opportunity playing with [Dhoni],” Karthik said. “I’ve always looked at myself [as someone who] can play as a batsman in this side and that’s what I’m looking to do – play as a batsman in all three formats of the game.”It was his batting as a teenager that first attracted the selectors’ attention, and once again the runs he scored during a fruitful IPL season with Mumbai Indians led to his recall in a simplified batting role for the Champions Trophy in June – his first games for India in three years. Karthik has also benefitted from some minor tweaks to his batting technique which have aided his balance at the crease.”I feel I have the technique,” Karthik said. “It’s important that every time I get an opportunity I pile up the runs and make sure I do well as a batsman. We won the Champions Trophy and that was great. West Indies was a quiet time, but Zimbabwe again in the two innings I’ve played I’ve done well.”Yet, Karthik’s figures do not quite convince. Since his return in England, Karthik has scored two fifties in 11 innings. Although the runs haven’t begun to flow just yet, on a few occasions since his recall Karthik had shown he has the ability to absorb pressure in the middle order after the loss of early wickets. Most recently, he entered the fray during the second ODI at Harare with India wobbling at 65 for 4. He didn’t need as much luck as his partner Shikhar Dhawan, who was dropped twice and caught off a no ball, and compiled a tidy 69 that helped set a match-winning total. His reaction to pressure situations like that will be key to Karthik’s future.”I’m looking forward to these things,” he said. “It’s important that you keep putting in performances every time you go into bat and be as consistent as you can, and that’s something I’m really looking forward to doing.”

Important to show our improvement – Simmons

Ireland coach Phil Simmons believes his side has made enough progress in recent years to start beating Test nations on a regular basis and sees this week’s ODI series against Pakistan as the perfect opportunity to claim another scalp.Ireland will have fond memories of their triumph over Pakistan during the 2007 World Cup but Bangladesh apart, they are still awaiting victory over one of the top-ranked countries on home soil despite narrow defeats to England and Australia in the last three years. Simmons is confident his side can prepare for July’s crucial World Cup qualifiers against Netherlands by upsetting the odds against the side currently ranked sixth in the world.”It’s difficult when you play games at home as we only have a few squad-days together in which to gain momentum, but we need to show the improvements that we’ve made in recent years,” Simmons said.”Our improvement is a constant work in progress, and while Pakistan have some unbelievable talent in their ranks, we want to prove that we don’t just beat the major teams in big tournaments. We are a side in constant progress and these games are important to show how much we’ve come on since the last international team was here.”With Test status their long-term ambition, Simmons believes the ICC is keeping a close eye on his sides’ performances, which he feels brings its own pressures.”We need to play these games all the time, the more these games are played the more we can measure our progress,” Simmons said. “The ICC know what we’re capable of and it’s important we forget about sending them a message and just start winning games.”I think our performances are a little more magnified than the other Associate members, so that’s why we have to make sure we perform up to a high standard but we also need to get our priorities right.”Simmons has a full-strength squad to choose from and with several of his key players enjoying a good start to the county season, the hosts will be confident ahead of the two-game series which starts on Thursday.”It’s difficult to get the momentum when the guys are only home for a couple of days at a time but the good thing about it is all the guys are playing regularly in England so everybody should be sharp enough,” Simmons said. “It’s important that we get together ahead of the Holland games and play some good cricket in preparation and beating Pakistan would be huge going into the qualifiers.”

Handscomb returns to haunt his old team, not for the first time

Zafar Gohar keeps hosts in touch with 4-34, but the missed stumping off his bowling to reprieve Peter Handscomb may yet prove costly

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay17-May-2025Not for the first time, Peter Handscomb returned to haunt his old county as Leicestershire kept their noses in front on an absorbing day two against Middlesex at Lord’s.Handscomb made only two 50s in 21 innings over two seasons for the Seaxes, but added to his century here last season with a defiant 87. It marked his 100th score of 50 or more in first-class cricket. Ian Holland (37) and Ben Green (36) lent support in stands of 93 and 59 respectively to carry the visitors to 274.Former Pakistan international spinner Zafar Gohar kept the hosts in touch with figures of 4-34, but the missed stumping off his bowling which reprieved Handscomb on 54 may yet prove costly.Middlesex openers Sam Robson and Max Holden survived a nervy four over before the close, reducing their arrears by 10 runs in the process.Leicestershire were initially bogged down as the new ball regularly whistled past both edges of the bat. Sol Budinger opted to counter-attack, depositing one from Dane Paterson over mid-on for six, but the former South African international reaped rapid vengeance, bowling him with a beauty which clipped off-stump.Toby Roland-Jones came on as the day’s first change and struck with his second delivery, a lack of footwork from Rehan Ahmed, coupled by a tentative poke at the ball resulting in an inside edge onto the stumps. With the hosts now on top, debutant Naavya Sharma should have enjoyed a dream start, finding the edge of Lewis Hill’s bat in his opening over in first-class cricket, only for the usually safe hands of Sam Robson to grass the chance at first slip. Hill though didn’t make the most of the reprieve, Roland-Jones bowling him off the inside edge soon afterwards.Handscomb though found an ally in Holland as the early afternoon developed into a game of patience, stoic defence resisting frugal bowling by the hosts. Thirteen runs were squeezed out in 11 overs before a lovely cover drive by Handscombe raised the 50-stand and Holland mimicked his captain’s shot as the scoreboard began to tick over.Another boundary took Handscomb to his landmark half-century, but he should have gone on 54, wicketkeeper Jack Davies missing a stumping chance after he gave Gohar the charge. A huge lbw shout to the next delivery also went unheeded, after which Handscombe re-entrenched.His stand with the obdurate Holland reached 93 before the all-rounder was bamboozled by one from Gohar which beat his defences and dislodged the off-bail.
It was part of a lovely spell by the left-arm spinner either side of tea in which he also snared Ben Cox and Logan Van Beek, both leg before. At 197 for 7, Middlesex were even scenting a narrow first-innings lead, but new batter Green opened his shoulders, clubbing Hollman over the short boundary.
The new ball was dispatched with similar distain, a straight drive back past Roland Jones, one of the shots of the day.Handscomb appeared to be inching towards his century, but was undone on Australia’s unlucky number 87, lofting the first ball of Gohar’s new spell to the hands of mid-on.Green’s enterprising innings ended when he was pinned in front by Higgins, before Sharma returned to scatter Tom Scriven’s stumps and claim the maiden first-class wicket he should have had earlier in the day.
