Celtic: Injury expert makes Kyogo Furuhashi claim

Injury expert Ben Dinnery has been reacting to Ange Postecoglou’s comments on Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Postecoglou’s comments

Furuhashi hasn’t been seen since the winter break, where he suffered a reoccurrence of a hamstring issue against St Johnstone.

Postecoglou revealed in the middle of January that Furuhashi wasn’t likely to feature over the next few weeks, a prediction that has since proven correct with the forward missing Celtic’s 3-0 win over rivals Rangers on Wednesday.

Celtic are now keeping it all in-house – the Hoops boss refused to go into specifics on Furuhashi and once again brushed questions aside regarding the 16-goal forward in the week. And Dinnery can see why Postecoglou wants to keep the forward’s recovery secret.

The Latest: Dinnery’s comments

Talking to Football Insider, Dinnery labelled the cryptic approach as ‘frustrating’ but understandable.

“From one point of view, it’s frustrating.

“You want to understand and be able to give guidance on these injuries. “But on the flip side, I can understand why players don’t want their ailments and injuries aired out in public.

“It’s difficult. It’s that fine line between servicing a need, giving the public what they want and staying connected without giving away the crown jewels.

“We are seeing this more regularly, with managers dealing with questions with a straight bat and saying they aren’t going to give that info.

“Unless there’s a change in disclosure law like in North American sports, I can see this becoming more commonplace.

“Players may want to take back some of this power. If everything is in the public domain, it can have an impact on transfers and contract negotiations.”

The Verdict: Coping just fine

The Hoops dropped five points when Furuhashi missed three games earlier in the season with a knee injury.

However, they have dropped just two in the seven games he has missed due to the hamstring problem, showing Postecoglou’s side are coping just fine without their star forward.

International teammate Daizen Maeda arrived in January to provide another attacking option, so Celtic are in no need to rush Furuhashi back, as doing so, as we saw against St Johnstone, can actually make things worse.

Spurs’ own Hazard: Dejan Kulusevski

Tottenham Hotspur’s new signing Dejan Kulusevski could become a better version of one of Antonio Conte’s former stars…

January swoop

The Sweden international signed from Juventus on deadline day, joining in an 18-month initial loan for an £8.3m fee, which has an option to buy set around £29.2m, as per the BBC.

He arrives in north London alongside fellow teammate Rodrigo Bentancur, who joins in a £15.9m permanent deal, which could rise by £5m before the end of his contract in 2026.

The pair would be Spurs’ only two arrivals this winter.

Shades of Eden Hazard

Kulusevski is hardly the sort of player that the Lilywhites were crying out for but he’s still a very exciting young talent who will offer Conte supreme versatility in the final third.

It’s that sort of ‘plug-and-play’ style that the Italian loves to have at his disposal – as we’ve already seen, he considers Steven Bergwijn to be a back-up option to Harry Kane up top, whilst there could be some similarities to Eden Hazard, an out-and-out winger who thrived in the half-spaces as one of two no.10s.

The 21-year-old is certainly capable of playing both roles as displayed during his maiden campaign at the Old Lady. Kulusevski was deployed in as many as seven different positions and he still provided 14 direct goal contributions across all competitions, which is remarkable for his age at a club of Juve’s stature.

Perhaps what is more astonishing was the way in which he dropped down the pecking order under Massimiliano Allegri but his loss is certainly Spurs’ gain.

“He has incredible physical strength. He reminds me of a young [Mo] Salah for the way he shakes off opponents in the first ten metres,” once claimed Italian coach Pierpaolo Bisoli, whilst former Aston Villa and Sweden striker Marcus Allback dubbed Tottenham’s new man “explosive” and “direct” to The Sun.

According to  Italian Football expert Nima Tavallaey Roodsari, Kulusevski will become an “absolute monster” under the stewardship of Conte.

Hazard provided 34 goals and 21 assists in 94 appearances under the Conte at Stamford Bridge, and the 52-year-old will be hoping that the £27m-rated dynamo can be a similar sort of attacking threat at Spurs this season.

Given the way in which the Belgian has fallen off in his career and the age that Kulusevski has arrived in N17, the Lilywhites’ new man could well emerge as an even better talent than the former Chelsea star in the future.

Pietersen and Ashraful fail again

Bangladesh A 202 (Raqibul 107* Tredwell 6-95) and 362 for 5 dec (Shuvo 91*, Dollar 66*) drew with England XI 281 for 7 dec (Trott 101) and 185 for 5 (Cook 43) by 158 runs
ScorecardAn extraordinary barrage of declaration slogging from Shuvo Chowdhury and Dollar Mahmud enlivened the final day of England’s warm-up match against Bangladesh A, but it was the ongoing poor form of the two highest-profile players on either team that captured the headlines as the contest drifted to a draw at Chittagong.By the time the players shook hands at 3.30pm, England had reached 185 for 5 in their final innings, having given time in the middle to some of their likely Test starters, but the focus had shifted firmly from the present to the first Test in three days’ time. Bangladesh will go into that contest without the services of their most-capped player, Mohammad Ashraful, whose omission from the squad was confirmed soon after he had been bowled by Ajmal Shahzad for 30 in his final innings this morning.England, meanwhile, will be relying on Kevin Pietersen recapturing his big-game mentality after yet another failure that takes his tally in all matches in Bangladesh to 69 runs in seven innings. True to current form, he was greeted with his nemesis style of bowling, left-arm spin, the very moment he came to the crease at the fall of Michael Carberry for 35, and though he showed glimpses of form with a brace of fours and a big six down the ground, he had made only 20 when he missed a sweep against the right-arm spinner, Ashraful.Pietersen’s place for the Chittagong Test is not in any real doubt, but the same cannot be said of Carberry, who had his chance to push for the opener’s berth vacated by Andrew Strauss, but left the jury hanging with 35 from 28 balls, an innings containing six classy fours, but numerous chancy leaves. He too was dismissed by Ashraful, as he propped forward to a good-length delivery, and squirted a regulation chance to short leg.Tim Bresnan’s appearance at No. 4 was a significant hint as to England’s likely planning for the Test series, and after impressing with the ball, he did his prospects no harm by batting calmly for 36, largely in partnership with his captain, Alastair Cook, who retired at tea with 43 to his name. And with James Tredwell likely to partner Graeme Swann as the second spinner, he too was given a chance to put bat on ball, reaching 11 from 28 balls before being bowled by a big legbreak from Noor Hossain, as Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott batted through to the close with no alarms. One of the most intriguing performances of the day was that of Steven Finn. Having picked up two wickets in a lively first spell in England colours on Sunday, he was given the ball first-up this morning, in tandem with Bresnan, and produced a superb spell to end the resistance of the outstanding batsman over the three days, Raqibul Hasan. With a century from the first innings and 50 not out overnight, Raqibul was beaten twice in an over on 51, before Finn tightened his line to detonate the off stump.Ashraful’s subsequent failure, bowled by a scuttler from Shahzad, effectively ended the competitive interest in the Bangladesh innings, but what followed was extraordinary. With Cook seeking to coax a declaration out of his opponents, he brought himself and Carberry on for a nine-over spell of buffet bowling that yielded an incredible 189 runs, with Cook conceding 111 of those himself.By lunch, the policy had enabled Sagir Hossain to race to 51 from 45 balls before retiring (presumably in disgust), while Shuvo (who happened to be batting with a runner) thwacked away with impunity for 91 from 30 balls, alongside Dollar, whose 17-ball 66 contained six sixes and just two dot-balls.It was the final confirmation, if any were needed, that the first-class status with which this match had begun had long since vanished, although by conceding a lead so sizeable that the scorers could not keep up, England did at least give themselves a nominal target to keep things interesting in the final session.

ExWHUemployee backs David reports

Sharing his information via The West Ham Way website, reliable club insider ExWHUemployee has backed some reports out of the club as they eye Lille striker Jonathan David.

The Lowdown: West Ham linked…

Claims have emerged involving the red hot Ligue 1 forward over this last week as West Ham become touted with a possible move.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Calciomercato were the first to mention David Moyes’ side, going on to claim that the player himself is open to joining the club and ‘likes’ the idea of signing for West Ham.

Meanwhile, Fichajes say that interest is very much reciprocated from the side of the Hammers as Moyes looks to strengthen his attacking options.

The Latest: Ex backs reports…

Sharing information via The West Ham Way website, ExWHUemployee backed reports that West Ham are interested in the Canada international – but insists that many other sides will also be keeping tabs.

He namedrops Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Arsenal specifically whilst putting the Hammers’ odds of signing David as fairly slim by comparison.

The Verdict: Would be sensational…

If Moyes could somehow jump ahead of the stiff competition and land the £45 million-valued man, it’s safe to say that recruitment chief Rob Newman would be pulling off a masterclass.

The ‘elite striker’ has been attracting major plaudits for his form in France this season with Ligue 1 football expert Adam White even likening him to Luis Suarez (The Guardian).

Elsewhere, Combate Global commentator Maximiliano Bretos branded the 21-year-old ‘phenomenal’ for his exploits on the international stage. Scoring 15 goals already in all competitions for Lille, it’s little wonder he is so highly sought after.

NUFC: Magpies closing in on Ekitike

A major update has emerged on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Reims centre-forward Hugo Ekitike…

What’s the talk?

90min reporter Graeme Bailey has claimed that the Magpies are closing in on the signing of the attacker and compared him to a PSG star.

He Tweeted: “Can reveal that Newcastle United are in advanced talks to sign Reims’ Hugo Ekitike for £30m. Outstanding talent – huge signing for Newcastle if they get it done, many in France believe he could be the next Mbappe.”

Huge coup

The Magpies could land a “huge” coup by signing Ekitike from Reims this month as he is a talented player with immense potential. Being touted as the “next Mbappe” is some compliment given what his fellow countryman has already achieved at such a young age.

Mbappe has won the World Cup with France and scored 150 goals in 197 matches for PSG, whilst also providing 76 assists for the French giants. He is also valued by Transfermarkt at a whopping £144m, having reportedly been signed from Monaco for £165.7m in 2017.

Ekitike has scored eight goals and provided two assists in just ten Ligue 1 starts for Reims this season in his first full year at senior level. Mbappe’s first season of starting more than five league matches in his career ended with 15 goals and eight assists in 17 starts for PSG, with the Reims man on course for 16 goals and four assists in 20 starts if he matches his form from the first half of campaign.

If the 19-year-old can go on to achieve even half of what Mbappe has managed in his career then he could be a sizeable coup for the Magpies and improve their team in the short and long-term. He has already shown that he can score goals in a top-five league, which suggests that he could make an impact in the Premier League this season. Furthermore, he holds the potential to massively increase his value further down the line.

Therefore, this could be a fantastic piece of business by the club, one that shows they are not only looking at stop gaps and short-term solutions to problems. They are seemingly looking to build Eddie Howe a team for the future as well as the present and Etitike, on paper at least, appears to be a great first step to doing that.

Beer signs three-year deal with Sussex

Sussex have signed a new three-year contract with Will Beer, the 21-year-old legspinner, which will keep him at Hove until the end of the 2012 season

Cricinfo staff11-Dec-2009Sussex have signed a new three-year contract with Will Beer, the 21-year-old legspinner, which will keep him at Hove until the end of the 2012 season.Beer played regular first-team cricket for Sussex last season in their successful Twenty20 and Pro40 campaigns, which culminated with a trip to the Champions League T20 in India.Sussex have a rich recent tradition with spin, having won the Championship in 2003, 2006 and 2007 in large part due to the exploits of the former Pakistan legspinner Mushtaq Ahmed, who is now England’s spin bowling coach. The club also signed Monty Panesar from Northamptonshire last month and is captained by left-arm-spinner Michael Yardy.Beer is looking forward to working with the senior players as he tries to break into the first-class side. “I am very excited about the next three years at the club and continuing the club’s recent success,” he said.”I want to build on my first year of first team cricket and am really looking forward to working with Monty Panesar – using his experience as a spinner to drive my game forward.”Mark Davis, the Sussex coach, said he’s eager to see Beer develop into a potent spinner as the club looks to improve last season’s showing in the Championship, where they won just two of 16 games.”We’re really pleased that Will has signed a new three-year deal. If his improvement last year is anything to go by, his development curve is moving in the right direction and signing an extended contract will allow him the opportunity of developing in to a match winning leg spinner.”

Tall, fast and highly rated

Back in February, like a bolt from the blue, a fast bowler from Multan allegedly standing 7’2″ tall caught the eye of former Pakistan fast bowler Aaqib Javed. At 6’8″, Joel Garner and Bruce Reid were the tallest fast bowlers to play international cricket, but this was something else, Aaqib realised. It was at that moment that a young player’s fortunes took a dramatic change, even if there was and remains, subsequently, considerable confusion over his real height: the PCB has variously measured him at 6’8″, 6’10” and 7’1″.Until then Mohammad Irfan’s cricketing ambitions were being held back by his surroundings and lack of contacts. He had been working in a plastic pipe factory earning about Rs 8,000 ($96) a month while playing club cricket in the eastern Pakistan town of Gaggu Mandi. Coming from a humble small-town background, the lack of opportunities had left Irfan disillusioned and without first-class representation. In August 2008 he decided to stop playing cricket and seek full-time employment to support his family. With plenty of interest generated from a fan forum on the cricket website – who heard of Irfan’s name while interviewing Multan’s assistant coach Nadeem Iqbal – the tall fast bowler was introduced to Aaqib at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore by a reporter for the site.Once Aaqib was enthused by what he saw – “I spent the whole day thinking to myself that we might have something really special here,” – things happened swiftly. Irfan was brought to the NCA almost immediately by Aaqib, who was keen to develop him mentally more than physically, and then joined a local club at which the internationals Abdul Razzaq and Imran Nazir played. He put in long hours at the NCA as well as for his club; one highlight was his 4 for 45 against Pakistan A prior to their departure for Sri Lanka this summer.A key moment in Irfan’s development came after Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) opener Azhar Ali recommended that the team keep an eye on him. The former Pakistan batsman and current KRL captain, Mohammad Wasim, then recommended that Irfan go to Rawalpindi and trial with the team. All it took was a stint at the nets bowling to Wasim for Irfan to get selected.Irfan made his first-class debut against PIA on October 10 this year. He went wicketless and conceded 79 runs from 25 overs. In his second game, Irfan took nine: seven in the second innings including former Test batsmen Imran Farhat, Hasan Raza and Salim Elahi. His former coach, Iqbal, was duly delighted for his ward. “Irfan, once he settles into first-class cricket, will show signs of maturity,” he said. “The best thing about Irfan is that he is a quick learner and he bowled only one no-ball in his 46 overs against HBL.”His main aim should be to obviously take as many wickets as possible and to remember the advice that he has been given about bowling wicket to wicket and not to bowl too short. With his height, if he maintains a good length he will trouble a lot of batsman in Pakistan”.KRL team official Rashid Iqbal, who was contacted by Ali in June, predicted a rise in speed. “At the moment he is raw and he bowls between 130-140 kph (81-87 mph) but I am sure that with the passage of time he could bowl up to 150 kph (93 mph),” he told .It is perhaps no surprise that one of the fast bowlers Irfan, 27, hopes to emulate is Garner. “I have seen quite a lot of videos how Garner used to bowl,” he said “The videos help a lot to learn the art of fast bowling.”For someone who just wanted to play cricket and nothing else, Irfan knows that those who have invested in him have high hopes.

Kaneria and Rehman bowl Habib Bank to victory

A round-up of all the games on the fourth day of round two of the 2009-10 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Cricinfo staff19-Oct-2009Group AHabib Bank’s spin duo, Danish Kaneria and Abdur Rehman, took seven wickets between them to bowl their team to a massive 235-run win against Khan Research Laboratories in Karachi. KRL began the day on 167 for 4, chasing an improbable 477 to win, and added only 74 more to their total. Saeed Anwar jnr was the boy on a burning deck, remaining unbeaten on 122 as wickets tumbled around him. No one else made more than Bazid Khan’s 39 and Rehman finished with 4 for 65 while Kaneria took 3 for 82.Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited’s bowlers picked up the remaining seven Lahore Shalimar wickets to secure a 97-run win at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Chasing 408, Lahore started the final day on 166 for 3 but soon lost their set batsman Abid Ali for 86, after he added only 5 to his overnight score. Suleman Khan contributed 53 to the chase but the other batsmen failed to convert their starts. Saeed Ajmal took 3 for 65 for ZTBL, while Sohail Tanvir, Junaid Nadir and Iftikhar Anjum took two each. The final day between Water and Power Development Authority and National Bank of Pakistan was an absorbing one but the contest ended in a draw in Lahore. Bilal Khilji was the last man dismissed, for 161, as WAPDA were all out for 413 in their second innings, leaving NBP with a target of 226. WAPDA’s fast bowlers, Sarfraz Ahmed and Naved-ul-Hasan, cut through the WAPDA top-order and reduced them to 40 for 5. Naumanullah, however, steadied the innings with a half-century and received support from Qaiser Abbas. They reached 156 for 7 before play ended.Centuries from Saeed Bin Nasir and Rizwan Ahmed helped Sui Southern Gas Corporation secure a draw against Pakistan International Airlines at the United Bank Limited Sports Complex. Chasing 445 for victory, especially after losing the first two wickets for eight runs, was always a hard ask but Saeed and Rizwan combined for a 169-run partnership for the fourth wicket and lifted SSGC’s innings. They ended the match having scored 296 for 4 in the second innings.Group BFast bowler Tanvir Ahmed ripped through Abbottabad’s second innings, taking 8 for 53, to bowl Karachi Blues to a 200-run victory at the Abbottabad Stadium. Tanvir dismissed the top six Abbottabad batsmen before returning to pick up the last two – six of his wickets were caught by the wicketkeeper Javed Mansoor. Mohammad Sami and Atif Maqbool took the other wickets as Abbottabad were all out for 159 chasing 360 for victory. Karachi had earlier declared on 262 for 4 after resuming on the final morning on 154 for 3. Asad Shafiq was unbeaten on 103 while Asim Kamal made a brisk 87.Beginning the final day on 22 for 1, Faisalabad needed another 315 runs to beat Multan at the Iqbal Stadium. However they managed to reach only 235 for 6 and the game ended in a draw. Opener Imran Ali and No. 3 batsman Hasan Mahmood scored half-centuries but the contributions from the rest of the batsmen were paltry. Tahir Maqsood and Abdur Rauf picked up two wickets each for Multan. The match between Sialkot and Lahore Ravi ended in a dull draw on the final day in Muridke. Play began with Sialkot extending their first-innings from 235 for 7 to 271. Nayar Abbas top scored with 59, while Mohammad Irshad and Junaid Zia took three wickets each. In their second innings, Lahore were reduced to 134 for 5 when the game ended. They were struggling at 27 for 4 before Mohammad Asim revived the innings with 53.

PCB clears Razzaq for IPL stint – report

PCB officials, in a meeting at the board’s headquarters in Lahore, reportedly gave the go-ahead for Razzaq after he had sought permission to play in the league

“It is great news for me and I’m now looking forward to give my best for Knight Riders.”•AFP

Pakistan allrounder Abdul Razzaq has said that the PCB has cleared him to play in the IPL, claiming that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were keen to seek his services for the third edition. The franchise though, has denied any official approach.PCB officials, in a meeting at the board’s headquarters in Lahore, reportedly gave the go-ahead to Razzaq after he had sought permission to play in the league. “It is great news for me and I’m now looking forward to give my best for Knight Riders,” Razzaq said.Razzaq, 29, was banned by the PCB for joining the unofficial ICL in 2007 after he was excluded from the World Twenty20 squad the same year. He was one of the key players for the Hyderabad Heroes in their title win in 2008.However, with the amnesty offer from the PCB earlier this year, he made his international return during the World Twenty20 in England in June. He was also part of the Pakistan squad that toured Sri Lanka earlier this summer, but was dropped for the Champions Trophy because of a lack of form and fitness.KKR officials though, clarified that no official approach had been made yet to any foreign ex-ICL player because the IPL was yet to finalise recruitment norms for those players. The IPL organisers said they might hold an auction for foreign ex-ICL players if needed, with the norms expected to be finalised in December. The inclusion of Razzaq may help turn around KKR’s fortunes after two forgettable IPL seasons. They finished sixth in 2007 and on the bottom in the second edition held in South Africa. The franchise has, in the past, hired a number of players from Pakistan, including Shoaib Akhtar, Umar Gul, Salman Butt and Mohammad Hafeez.
