Root century leads England to fine victory

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJoe Root’s third ODI century of the year helped England to a five-wicket victory in Pallekele and maintained their hopes of winning the series against Sri Lanka.Root came to the crease after the loss of two early wickets and with his side facing a familiar nemesis: a trial by spin on a dry pitch. But he exuded calm and skill, provided deft touches and powerful blows, and ran like a whippet between the wickets. In partnership with the equally impressive James Taylor, he made light of a testing total and took England to victory with five balls to spare. It was the highest successful run-chase in an ODI on the ground.Sri Lanka still lead 3-2 with two games to play but England will take great confidence from this side as they look towards the World Cup. Not only did they keep their nerve in spin-friendly conditions in which they have little pedigree, but the chase was built upon the performances of young players with many years in front of them.Taylor, with his second half-century in succession, and Root, with an unbeaten 104, added 104 for the third-wicket. Whereas, in the past, England’s crease-bound batsmen have become bogged down against spin, Taylor and Root were prepared to skip down the pitch and disrupt the bowlers’ lengths, rotating the strike well and punishing the poor ball when appropriate.Taylor led the way. Wonderfully fleet of foot and far more willing to come down that pitch than many of his England colleagues, his ability to find gaps and push for singles rendered it impossible for Sri Lanka to build pressure. And, given any fault in length or width, he showed the power and skill to punish the ball. Tillakaratne Dilshan was driven for six over long-on when the bowler offered flight and, when the inevitable quicker delivery came, Taylor scooped it down to fine-leg for four. They may have kissed a few frogs on the way to finding a new ODI No. 3 – Taylor is the ninth man tried in the position since the departure of Jonathan Trott – but it seems England have finally found their prince.

Herath out of series

  • Rangana Herath will play no further part in the ongoing ODI series against England after scans revealed a grade two hamstring tear in his left thigh.
  • The injury was sustained at training on Tuesday, and it further clouds his participation in the first Test against New Zealand, which begins on Boxing Day. Though Herath had already been doubtful for that Test owing to personal reasons, he is not necessarily ruled out of the first Test yet. “The hamstring tear is expected to take two to three weeks to recover from, but there is a chance Herath could play in the first Test, because sometimes the recovery can be quick,” team manager Michael de Zoysa said.
  • Sri Lanka have plenty of spin cover in the ODI series, but Herath absence will be a significant blow for the Test team, who have relied on him for wickets and control, both home and away. Herath took 14 wickets in Sri Lanka’s most recent Test, against Pakistan, and has been Sri Lanka’s best bowler in series in Australia and South Africa, in recent years.
  • Sri Lanka are scheduled to finish the fifth Test against England on Thursday afternoon, before playing to more games – one each in Pallekele and Colombo. The team leaves for the two-Test and seven-ODI tour of New Zealand on December 18.

Though his departure – pulling straight to deep backward square leg – provided some hope for Sri Lanka, a sensible and unhurried partnership of 86 in 18.5 overs between Root and Ravi Bopara all but ended the contest. It is Root’s calm that is most impressive. While other players might fret over scoreless periods – he scored only two from his first 13 balls – Root backs himself to accelerate once set and has a range of strokes that provide enough scoring options to give the scoreboard moving. While most of his boundaries came from his cuts, pulls or slog-sweeps – including the six he thumped to bring up his century from 115 balls – his ability to run the ball to third man or drive through cover off the back foot renders it hard for bowlers to control him.The only cloud on the horizon was the continuing poor form of their captain, Alastair Cook. Reprieved on 8 – replays showed that, had Sri Lanka asked for a review, he would have been out leg before to Sachitra Senanayake – Cook, who came back into the side in place of Alex Hales having served a one-match suspension for England’s slow over-rate in the third ODI, was unable to take advantage. Lunging at the ball, with his head falling away, he was never convincing and finally fell to an innocuous delivery that drifted on to his front pad. He has now made one half-century in his last 20 ODI innings and gone 43 innings and 30 months since he reached 80.At that stage, England were 35 for 2. But, in the absence of Lasith Malinga and Rangana Herath, Sri Lanka lacked the bowlers to exploit England’s nerves or the conditions and, with their fielding remaining shoddy, were unable to build any pressure.Sri Lanka could take some comfort from the return of Senanayake. The offspinner was reported for a suspect action during Sri Lanka’s tour of England and was suspended from bowling in July. But after remodelling his action and undergoing tests at the ICC-accredited facility in Chennai last month, was cleared for a return by the ICC on Tuesday and, barely 48 hours later, found himself back in the Sri Lanka side in place of Herath (who has a hamstring injury) and opening the bowling. Here, with a markedly different action – conventional and beyond reproach – he did not gain much spin, but he did bowl with impressive control and dismiss the dangerous Moeen Ali early, missing with an ugly slog-sweep.But this was not the most impressive display from Sri Lanka with the bat, the ball or in the field. They may reflect that they simply did not score enough runs. Although Kumar Sangakkara’s calm innings provided respectability, he lacked support with Kusal Perera again falling early (he has now failed to reach double-figures in seven of his last 10 ODI innings and, in four of the last eight, he has been dismissed in the first over) and Angelo Mathews top-edging a pull.Mahela Jayawardene, drawn into pushing at one outside off from Chris Woakes, edged to a well-positioned wide slip position – a nice piece of captaincy from Cook – and while Thisara Perera bashed 27 from 17 balls, Sri Lanka were bowled out with an over of their allocation left unused.Woakes finished with 6 for 47 – the first five-for by an England bowler in an ODI in Sri Lanka and the best figures by an England bowler in ODIs against Sri Lanka – and took five wickets in his last 17 deliveries as Sri Lanka, heaving to the outfield and missing slogs, collapsed from 199 for 5 to 239 all out.It was not a perfect performance by England. The 15 wides they delivered here took their total in the five match series to 56 so far and the Cook conundrum will continue to hang over them. But with younger players such as Root, Taylor and Woakes beginning to settle-in, they can look to the World Cup with just a little more confidence.

    Compton sends England a reminder

Nick Compton provided another reminder of his abilities as he helped his Somerset side secure a draw on the final day of their game at Durham

    George Dobell at Chester-le-Street23-Apr-2014
ScorecardNick Compton gave another assured display of his ability•Getty ImagesThe last time that England made 400 in a Test, Nick Compton and Jonathan Trott scored centuries. Kevin Pietersen made 73, too.So it is surprising that, with Trott and Pietersen now seemingly out of the picture, and England having failed to reach 400 since March 2013 – 13 Tests and 26 innings ago – that they seem to feel that they can do without Compton.Compton, the most prolific run-scorer in the Championship over the last couple of years, provided another reminder of his abilities as he helped his Somerset side secure a draw on the final day of their game at Durham. Though Somerset had, in theory, a chance of overhauling a victory target of 337 in a minimum of 82 overs they had, in reality, been on the back foot for the entire game and might consider a draw a more than fair result. While Durham’s captain, Paul Collingwood, admitted he was “a little surprised” when Somerset agreed to shake hands for a draw – they required 91 from the final nine overs and some clean striking from Craig Kieswetter brought a seemingly impossible target just about within reach – the evening was dark and, had Collingwood brought back his seamers, run-scoring would have proved difficult. While his top-order colleagues prodded around like men lost in a fog, Compton played as if he had a bat the size of a door, as if his forward defensive could keep out flood water and as if the surface was as flat as a road. Despite suffering from a neck injury that necessitated an injection and clearly inhibited his movement, he looked as permanent as Lumley Castle throughout. His chanceless century here was his 11th since the start of the 2012 English domestic season.Any century made against the champions on their own pitch in April is admirable. But this was not a purely defensive innings. Compton also produced some sparkling driving, off the slightly jaded Graham Onions in particular, and cut and pulled impressively. Quite why England left one of their best players of the short ball out of the tour party to Australia remains a mystery.Collingwood could play on

Paul Collingwood has hinted that he may have second thoughts and play beyond the 2014 season. Collingwood, the Durham captain, has previously suggested he would retire at the end of this domestic season and was expected to be in demand for a coaching position.
He has worked with both Scotland and England in recent months and, less than two weeks ago was quoted as saying that his retirement in September “was pretty close” to 100% certain. But, after starting the season in fluent form, Collingwood, who will be 38 next month, admitted he had not made up his mind for sure.
“Everybody is saying it’s my last season,” he said. “But I’m still not convinced either way whether it is or not.
“I have made a slight technical change to try to hit the ball a little bit harder – and I am quite enjoying that, actually – and not just clubbing it to the leg side. I’m quite enjoying hitting the ball through extra cover for once in my life. It makes a change and puts a smile on my face.
“I said I would possibly retire. But anything is possible. If I have a great year and I really enjoy it and I’m not holding guys back in the team and we have still got enough money here at Durham and all that kind of stuff, then I’ll continue. Maybe.”

As does Compton’s status as a somewhat unfashionable player within the England set-up. At 30, he should have several good years ahead of him and, when he was dropped by England last summer, he responded by scoring 1,000 Championship runs in 12 games and, in what amounted to trial games against Australia, made 81 and 79 under pressure. It was all to no avail. The impression remains that England have moved on; that Compton, like Mark Ramprakash before him, can amass runs and break records: the selectors have made their decision. But to average 93.33 – as Compton does in first-class cricket – against a Durham side containing, in Marcus Trescothick’s words “the best bowler in the country in these conditions” is a remarkable achievement. And this was a brave innings, too, coming when Compton was clearly in pain and inhibited by his neck injury and when his team, at 92 for 4, were facing the prospect of defeat. It was played on a pitch of uneven bounce and, while the lavish swing of the second day was absent, a pitch that continued to offer some seam movement.”To get runs when you’re fit is one thing,” Trescothick said. “But to do it when your back is against the wall and you’re really sore is a really big statement. Nick had to fight to even get on the pitch. It was a brilliant knock. He is a world-class player. But he’ll be very sore tonight.”Collingwood agreed. “He played superbly well,” he said. “Once he gets in, he’s very hard to prise out. He is an international-class batsman and tough to get out. But I’m not the one who makes the [selection] decisions. Obviously they know his character better than me and you have to have the right characters in the right positions in teams and I’m not one to judge on that as I don’t know what he’s like.”Perhaps, had Scott Borthwick, at second slip, not put down a relatively simple chance offered by Kieswetter on 9 off the unfortunate Onions, Durham would have had been able to force victory. As it was, Kieswetter played an increasingly dominant innings and cut loose in the final hour to help Compton add 154 for the fifth wicket. If Matt Prior is unfit – and his Achilles issue is yet to allow him to keep this season – Kieswetter is among the leaders in the chasing pack looking for a spot as Test wicketkeeper.Had Collingwood not chosen to bat on in the morning, Durham would have had the chance to unleash another 14 overs and a second new ball. Resuming with his side already boasting a lead of 275, Collingwood left it almost 50 minutes before he declared but could reason that, without Mark Wood or Ben Stokes, his attack was thinner than he would have liked and it was almost a year to the day since Joe Root inspired Yorkshire to a successful run chase of 339 in similar circumstances.”If the ball doesn’t swing, this pitch is slow and flat,” he said. “I don’t think I could have set less than I did. I didn’t want to hand them victory after a three-day game.”

Binny century flattens Rest of India

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsFile photo – Stuart Binny’s century came up in 82 balls, bettering his 88-ball effort against Gujarat at the same venue during the Ranji Trophy•Sivaraman Kitta

A scintillating hundred from Stuart Binny powered Karnataka to a massive 189-run lead on the second day against Rest of India. Karnataka were expected to take the lead after dismissing ROI for 201, which they did, and Binny pummelled the ROI bowlers as the hosts scored 365 runs in 84 overs. All the Karnataka batsmen got starts, and fifties from Ganesh Satish and Karun Nair ensured Binny came out to bat at a comfortable 188 for 4.Binny showered boundaries without breaks and all around the park till the end of the day, scoring at over a run-a-ball against all the bowlers barring Ashok Dinda and Harbhajan Singh.Resuming on 35 for 1, Satish and KL Rahul started confidently, negotiating the consistent line outside off from Pankaj Singh and Ashok Dinda with solid technique. Rahul got into gear with an exquisite cover drive for four in the first over, while Satish mainly targeted the area around gully and point. In the fifth over of the day, he brought up the team’s fifty with a four down the ground and followed it up with two more off the next two balls, guiding one past second slip and working one off the hips when Dinda pitched short. After Satish produced two more fours three overs later, this time off Pankaj, Rest of India captain Harbhajan Singh made a bowling change, bringing on Anureet Singh for Dinda. Anureet struck immediately with an incoming delivery that kept very low and rattled the stumps through Rahul’s defence.Manish Pandey showed his intent early in his innings when he charged down the pitch and hit Anureet for two consecutive fours in his next over. He scored briskly with regular boundaries until Pankaj produced a terrific spell out of nowhere just before lunch. He pitched one on middle stump and got considerable outswing from the 38-over-old ball for an edge that Dinesh Karthik pouched with one hand after diving to his right. But Satish had completed his fifty by then and Karnataka had reduced the deficit to under 50.

    Dinesh Karthik injures ankle

Rest of India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik went off the field briefly after he injured his right ankle during the 53rd over of Karnataka’s innings. Karun Nair shouldered arms to a ball from Anureet Singh that kept low, bounced twice and hit Karthik’s ankle.
Karthik had to go off the field and was attended to with ice packs. Kedar Jadhav donned the gloves and kept for 9.2 overs, before Karthik came back at the fall of Ganesh Satish’s wicket in the 62nd over. Satish, ironically, was caught behind by Jadhav.

Karnataka slowed down for over an hour after lunch when Harbhajan and Anureet resumed and conceded only 29 runs in 15 overs. The last over of that period produced a wicket. First, Harbhajan’s incisive length produced an outside edge from Satish that fell just short of Gautam Gambhir at first slip. Next ball, the offspinner sent Satish back, having him caught by stand-in wicketkeeper Kedar Jadhav, even though the decision left the batsman unhappy. Satish’s wicket was the first taken by a spinner in the match.Binny’s entry changed a couple of gears for Karnataka. He struck two fours off Dinda two overs after he came in, and, with Nair, forced a bowling change by smashing 22 runs from Harbhajan’s next two.But Amit Mishra was welcomed the way the captain was seen off the attack – with a massive six over long-off from Binny. He was cruising on 29 off 27 with three fours and two sixes, and he marched into the 40s with 13 more runs off Mishra in the same spell.Binny had nearly overtaken a patient Nair before the latter unleashed three fours in one over to complete his fifty and a dejected Harbhajan walked back to his dressing room for tea after leaking 14 runs in that over. Karnataka’s change of pace and plan was apparent as the partnership had piled on 91 runs from a mere 13.3 overs, at nearly seven an over. The approach did not change in the last session, and Binny smashed Mishra for two more fours in the first over after tea, reaching his fifty with the second. It had taken him just 45 balls. Harbhajan asked for the second new ball as soon as it was available, and brought on his best bowler, Pankaj, but he wasn’t spared either, paying the price for offering room to Binny. Anureet tried to vary the length in the next over but he was cut and hooked for a four and six, with which Binny overtook his partner. Bowlers changed, the ball changed, lines and lengths changed, field placements changed, but the batsmen and the results remained the same. The new ball also had been smashed around so much that Harbhajan, at one point, wanted it changed, but the umpires did not agree. Binny brought up his eighth first-class hundred off 82 balls, improving on the 88-ball century he had scored against Gujarat at the same ground during the Ranji Trophy.Things slowed down a bit towards the end of the day and Nair, who had also moved towards his hundred, lost his stumps when he was a bit late leaving a delivery from Pankaj outside off, the extra bounce finding his inside edge and sending him back for 92. The stand between Nair and Binny had doubled the score in less than 30 overs.Binny and CM Gautam saw the remaining 7.2 overs through as Karnataka ended the day on 390 for 5.

Essex ready if Northants slip – Grayson

In the end, the two hours that Mother Nature afforded Essex were not enough for them to secure the victory they deserved

    Vithushan Ehantharajah at Canterbury14-Sep-2013
ScorecardDarren Stevens again defied Essex•Getty ImagesIn the end, the two hours that Mother Nature afforded Essex were not enough for them to secure the victory they deserved, one that would have put them just eight points behind second-placed Northamptonshire. That deficit could have been further reduced in the penultimate round of Division Two matches next week to set up a thrilling finale to a season already spoiling us for twists and turns.Instead, the difference is 21, although Kent, the team saved by the weather, could still make things interesting if they were to achieve an improbable win at Wantage Road next week.Essex’s coach, Paul Grayson, was understandably disappointed that rain limited the window available for his side to finish off their good work. He called for his team to maintain focus ahead of hosting Glamorgan next week. “If Northants do slip up, we’ll be in the right place to make the most of it,” he said.Watchful with the bat and superior with the ball throughout, the visitors displayed a ruthlessness that few have matched in either division this season. The three pace bowlers, David Masters, Reece Topley and Graham Napier, along with Monty Panesar – who Grayson would like to bring to Chelmsford on a full-time basis – have the look of a top-tier attack. Quite rightly, Grayson was keen to extend that tag to the entire XI that started at Canterbury, championing an experienced and dynamic batting line-up.Since the ignominy of their collapse for 20 against Lancashire at Chelmsford in early June, Essex have rallied impressively to put together a six-match unbeaten run, featuring wins against Leicestershire (twice) and Worcestershire. All this, while making FLt20 Finals Day and finishing second in the strongest competitive YB40 group – missing out on the semi-finals by a solitary point.”By that period, we had our lads back from the IPL, so we get that nice group of players back together,” Grayson said. “We know we’ve got the quality and eventually found a nice rhythm to our game.”We took a bit of criticism at the start of the season, and rightly so because we didn’t play well enough. But we’ve stuck together as a group and we’ve played some very good four-day cricket of late; the bowlers have been exceptional and the younger players like Jaik Mickleburgh and Ben Foakes have come to the fore to support the more experienced players, too.”There was some cause for regret here, as Grayson saw his side drop Darren Stevens twice on his way to a half-century that put Kent into the lead and took valuable overs out of the game. “It’s a really important area we’ve got to work on – we’re very aware of that,” Grayson said. “It doesn’t help that we don’t have a settled slip cordon, but throughout the season we’ve put down a couple of vital chances that could have changed things for us.”Essex needed just six wickets, and maybe a few second-innings runs, to wrap up victory but a fine-yet-steady downpour throughout the morning meant the only cricket played before 3.30pm was in the respective changing rooms. Play was due to be called off at 1.30pm but, just minutes before the umpires took to the field to read the game its last rites, the rain stopped. After Napier completed the over he started on Friday, he was immediately replaced at the Nackington Road End by Topley. Two balls in, he had Sam Northeast lbw for 70, two days after he opened the second innings. He then had a second, by the same mode, five overs later when Geraint Jones was trapped in his crease for the second time in this match. But between Topley’s brace, Ryan ten Doeschate gave Stevens his first reprieve off the bowling of Masters.By the time Stevens’ had received his second – again off Masters – he had passed 1000 first class runs for the season, given Kent the lead and crossed fifty. A regular tormenter of Essex – he has five hundreds against them – he revelled in his role as wet blanket, picking off runs past the infield, as Foster pulled his men up to coax a wicket. However, it was an error from Stevens that let Essex back in, when he hit Panesar straight to Owais Shah at extra cover, at which point Kent had a lead of 26. A handful of half-chances came and went but at 5.12 pm, with 25 minutes of official play left, hands were shaken.Ravi Bopara will return to the Essex side for the final two fixtures, against Glamorgan and away to Hampshire. Grayson is also due for talks with ten Doeschate and the Essex management over the allrounder’s participation in the Champions League Twenty20 with New Zealand side Otago. It was originally agreed that he would go to the competition when it was mathematically impossible for Essex to catch Northamptonshire. There will be no return for Alastair Cook, however, with Grayson stating that the ECB have him on prescribed R&R ahead of the winter’s Ashes commitments.
