West Ham fans flock to Tarkowski claim

Flocking to Twitter, these West Ham United fans have reacted to a major update on manager David Moyes’ transfer plans ahead of January involving Burnley star James Tarkowski.

Since defender Angelo Ogbonna suffered an ACL injury in West Ham’s 3-2 home victory over Liverpool before the last international break, Moyes has been tipped to target a new signing as cover in the winter window (The Evening Standard).

Of the players linked, which include Hertha Berlin mainstay Niklas Stark and Liverpool centre-back Nathaniel Phillips, Clarets favourite Tarkowski is a name repeatedly mentioned.

The 29-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season, with his current deal set to expire in 2022, and it is reliably believed that is he far from likely to sign an extension at Turf Moor (The Athletic).

As such, Burnley may feasibly have to let him go in January or risk losing him for free in the summer – with The Sun now coming out with a claim on what West Ham and Moyes have planned.

According to their sources, ‘West Ham boss David Moyes will make a final bid’ to sign Tarkowski this upcoming window with the club set for a transfer swoop.

It is believed they will lodge an offer of around £6m-£7m with the Hammers boss personally keen on a move.

West Ham fans react…

Reacting to this transfer claim, it’s safe to say these supporters hold mixed feelings.

There are those who believe he would be an ‘absolute steal’ at that price and ‘great addition’, hard to argue given he has averaged even more clearances per 90 (5.2) than any West Ham defender in the Premier League this season according to WhoScored.

Tarkowski has also been hailed as a ‘top player’ by Turf Moor boss Sean Dyche, highlighting his obvious quality.

However, others have mixed opinions on how willing Burnley would be to sell their prized asset amid a relegation battle whilst others question the validity of the claim.

One fan even worries for the West Ham youngsters coming through if Moyes decides to sign another ‘marquee’ defender like Tarkowski.

Cri-zelda Brits gives SA the lead

A disciplined bowling performance from the South Africa women followed by Cri-zelda Brits’ half-century gave the hosts an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match series against West Indies women. South Africa bowled tight to dismiss the visitors for only 160 and they suffered no major setbacks in their chase, reaching the target with 56 balls to spare and seven wickets in hand.Opening batsman Stafanie Taylor top-scored for West Indies, making 66 off 73 balls, before she was superbly caught by Marcia Letsoalo off Charlize van der Westhuizen. The rest of the top order contributed virtually nothing and only three other batsmen got into double figures. Sixteen-year old Dane van Niekerk picked up 3 for 37, running through the middle order, while Shandre Fritz mopped up the tail with figures of 3 for 11.Unlike their West Indian counterparts, the South African top order got stuck in and made valuable contributions to the chase. Openers Trisha Chetty and Kristie Thomson made 42 and 27 respectively, adding 50 for the first wicket in only 8.3 overs. After Thomson was dismissed, Brits and Chetty added 86 runs for the second wicket, virtually shutting the West Indians out of the game. Brits remained undefeated and went past 1000 runs during her innings.”I have been looking forward to it (1000 runs) for some time and I’m relieved that it is over, now I can look forward to higher achievements,” Brits said. “It took me some time because I started my career at the bottom of the order so I’m looking to get to the 2000 mark much faster. I’m feeling good about my form after today’s knock hopefully the runs will keep flowing.”South Africa have now won two games on the trot and the West Indies need to win the final match on Friday in Newlands to level the series.

West Ham refuse to rule out Wijnaldum

As per 90min, a shock transfer claim has come out of West Ham United involving former Liverpool star and Paris-Saint Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Lowdown: Agents approach Moyes…

As confirmed by the boss himself, agents have already been attempting to offer their top players to both manager David Moyes and West Ham United (football.london).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Scotsman’s candid admission in a recent press conference perhaps exemplifies his side’s season so far and how they’re continuing to defy expectation, with West Ham currently still fighting on all fronts.

As the January window looms, the Hammers’ top priorities appear to be an emergency centre-half and the continued pursuit of a back-up striker to Michail Antonio (The Daily Mail).

However, that hasn’t stopped them from being tipped to bolster their midfield too, with 90min now sharing some surprise news.

The Latest: West Ham approached over Wijnaldum…

As per the outlet and reporter Graeme Bailey, West Ham and Moyes have been ‘approached’ by representatives of PSG player Wijnaldum just months after his move to the Parc des Princes from Liverpool.

His agents are apparently ‘working on finding him a potential loan move in the new year’ with West Ham among those to have been offered the 31-year-old alongside ‘more than half the Premier League’.

The Irons’ stance is not yet clear as they have allegedly refused to rule out the possibility of signing him temporarily in January.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Capable of playing further forward in the attacking midfield positions, Wijnaldum is arguably proven in the English top flight and could come as a cheaper alternative to target Jesse Lingard – especially on loan.

The 85-cap ace, called ‘sensational’ by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, has scored an impressive 26 goals over those appearances for the Netherlands – potentially highlighting his threat going forward.

Despite playing a bit-part role under Mauricio Pochettino this season, he’s still managed to make his mark in the Champions League group stages with two goals, all while averaging an impressive 91% pass accuracy in midfield – more than any West Ham regular domestically with over two starts (WhoScored).

The only big caveat could be his reported £165,000-per-week wages, over £40,000 more than what West Ham’s current highest earner, Kurt Zouma, is taking home (spotrac).

Liverpool fans love Harvey Elliott video

A number of Liverpool fans are delighted after a club tweet showed Harvey Elliott making more positive progress in his injury recovery.

The Reds have experienced bad luck with injuries to midfielders so far this season, with Jurgen Klopp struggling to get a settled unit on the pitch. Liverpool are currently without Naby Keita, James Milner and Curtis Jones, as well as Elliott, who has been missing since September.

The 18-year-old suffered a dislocated ankle in the 3-0 win away to Leeds United two months ago, with a long spell on the sidelines expected after confirmation of the injury.

Elliott seems to be making impressive progress, though, and on Thursday, an official club tweet showed the midfielder working hard in the gym, not looking a million miles away from a return to action.

Southampton could solve attacking issue with January move for Keane Lewis-Potter

Southampton have not exactly been an attacking force to be reckoned with in the Premier League in recent years with the Saints only managing to score more than 50 league goals in one season on one occasion since the 2016/17 campaign.

This season seems to be going in a similar direction so far this season as well with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side having managed to find the back of the net just five times in seven matches.

However, the Saints could be on the right track to potentially fix their attacking issues…

What’s the latest?

It has recently been reported that Southampton will have to pay a fee of £12m to Championship club Hull City if they want to sign winger Keane Lewis-Potter in the upcoming January transfer window, who they have been linked with in recent weeks.

Lewis-Potter, who is a product of Hull’s youth academy, made his senior debut for the club back in January 2019 in an FA Cup defeat against Millwall.

Since then, the 20-year-old winger, who is currently valued at £540k according to Transfermarkt, has made a total of 86 appearances for the Tigers in which he has managed to score 20 goals and provide 10 assists along the way.

So far this season, Lewis-Potter, who has been labelled as a “special talent” by Grant McCann has played 90 minutes in all of Hull’s Championship games, scoring two goals and providing two assists in the process, which just goes to show how important he is to the club.

Attacking reinforcement

Taking into account Southampton’s uninspiring number of goals in the Premier League so far this season and the age of some of their current wingers such as Theo Walcott (32), Nathan Redmond (27) and Mohamed Elyounoussi (27),  a January move for Lewis-Potter could help freshen up Southampton’s attack this season but also provide the club with a useful long-term figure in the squad because of his young age.

However, given how important Lewis-Potter has proven himself to be for Hull this season, Southampton could find it difficult to take him away from his boyhood club, even if they have put a £12m price tag on him that they would reportedly be willing to accept for him.

If they were able to sign him in January though, and Lewis-Potter was able to score some goals and get some assists staright away, we feel the Southampton fans would be delighted with this potential bit of business from the club.

Manchester City predicted XI vs Club Brugge

After sealing a 2-0 home victory against Burnley in their previous Premier League match thanks to goals from Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City now turn their attention to the Champions League with an away clash against Club Brugge on Tuesday evening next up for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Ahead of the match against the Belgian club, defender John Stones did not travel with the rest of the squad due to apparent personal reasons, as well as Ferran Torres who picked up an injury during the recent international break away with Spain.

Taking this into account and looking at the players who did travel to Belgium, here’s how we feel City will line up against Brugge with four changes made.

In goal, with Ederson being in contention to play in midweek after missing the Burnley game due to his recent involvement with Brazil shortly before the match against Sean Dyche’s side, we feel that Guardiola will start him in Belgium despite Zack Steffen managing to keep a clean sheet in his absence over the weekend.

For the defence, with Stones missing, we can see Guardiola recalling Ruben Dias to the starting XI alongside Aymeric Laporte after the Portuguese ace only came on as a second-half substitute against Burnley.

At full-back, we think Guardiola will put Joao Cancelo on the left ahead of Nathan Ake, leaving Kyle Walker to come back into the team in his favoured right-back position.

In midfield, we suspect the manager will stick with the same three that started against Burnley with weekend goalscorers De Bruyne and Silva on either side of Rodri.

For their attacking line, we think Guardiola could opt for Gabriel Jesus ahead of Riyad Mahrez in the right-wing position if he feels the Brazilian is ready to play following his recent international duty period alongside Ederson.

On the left flank, with Jack Grealish being an unused substitute at the weekend and the fact that the £72m-rated Phil Foden didn’t have a great individual performance against Burnley with SofaScore giving him a match rating of 6.8/10, we think Guardiola could swap the pair allowing Grealish to come back into the side.

Finally, we think Guardiola will stick with Raheem Sterling through the middle despite his lack of goals against Burnley. He has apparently impressed the City boss in that position in the past.

Whether Guardiola goes with this exact starting XI that we have predicted or not, we feel as though the club will undoubtedly be searching for revenge after they lost their previous Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain.

Newcastle: Bruce confirms Callum Wilson blow

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has confirmed a major injury blow before tonight’s Premier League game against Leeds United at St James’ Park.

What’s the story?

The Magpies find themselves inside the relegation zone heading into tonight’s game against Marcelo Bielsa’s side, and Steve Bruce will be desperately hoping for a bit of respite.

However, they will have to do so once again without their main man up front, with the Newcastle boss confirming that while Callum Wilson has made good progress on his injury, he’s not quite ready to make an appearance just yet.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Bruce said of the 29-year-old: “We’re not going to put a time on it. He’s making good progress. Unfortunately, he’s not made it.”

Fans will be gutted

The former Bournemouth striker has been a rare shining light for Newcastle over the past year or so and marked his debut campaign for the Magpies last season with 12 goals in just 26 Premier League games despite struggling for consistent action through injury.

This season has also seen him start off well, netting twice in the opening three fixtures, and it’s no surprise that he’s the man on whom Newcastle rely to lead the line and score their goals. In fact, Joe Willock was the only other player in their squad to score more than four times in last season’s Premier League.

The £19.8m-rated Wilson has earned rave reviews in his time playing in the Premier League, with Eddie Howe, his former manager at Bournemouth, particularly fulsome in his praise of the centre-forward.

The ex-Cherries boss said: “He is an outstanding player with unique attributes for us. He has that ability to run in behind and he’s got the work ethic off the ball and, of course, he knows where the goal is.”

The fact that Wilson will once again be missing from action tonight is a body blow and big setback to Newcastle, and Magpies fans will surely be gutted at seeing him missing a game from which they desperately need a win to get their season going.

Meanwhile, Bruce must drop this player tonight…

Hutton: Bolingoli may have wasted chance

Boli Bolingoli may have missed his ‘only’ opportunity to impress Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou, Alan Hutton has told Football Insider.

The lowdown

Postecoglou handed Bolingoli a start in the 1-0 defeat at Livingston last month.

It was the Belgian’s first outing for the club since a three-minute substitute appearance against Kilmarnock in August 2020.

He’d been sent out on loan to Turkish Super Lig outfit Istanbul Basaksehir in the wake of a coronavirus rule breach.

His return to the fold looks to have been short-lived. The left-back, who earns £12,500 per week, was an unused substitute for the cup win over Raith Rovers and didn’t make the matchday squad for the games against Dundee United or Bayer Leverkusen.

The latest

Hutton reckons that Postecoglou wanted to run the rule over Bolingoli and clearly wasn’t impressed.

And he fears that the outlook is now pretty bleak for the 26-year-old.

“You want to have a look at all your players within the squad,” he said. “He did that in the Livingston game.

“Obviously he didn’t do enough to keep his place in the manager’s eyes.

“Sometimes when you get given that opportunity from nowhere, it’s the only time you have to grasp it. Maybe he’s not done that.”

The verdict

Bolingoli might actually be a victim of the poor result, because his performance was decent.

He won seven of his 13 duels during the game and completed 85 of his 90 passes (via SofaScore).

Indeed, Frank McAvennie claimed that he was the best player on the pitch and deserved to keep his place against Dundee United.

But it certainly looks like the manager’s preference is to go with the teenager Adam Montgomery in the absence of Greg Taylor.
