Zaheer the bowling Sachin – Dhoni

Zaheer Khan has been hailed as the Sachin Tendulkar of Indian bowling as their captain, MS Dhoni, seeks to rouse the confidence of his leading strike bowler in India’s final Group A match against England at R Premadasa Stadium on Sunday. The match is meaningless in terms of qualification, with both sides through to the Super Eights, but it holds much significance for India as they look for the sort of improved form from Zaheer that will enable them to stay true to their policy of fielding only four frontline bowlers. If Zaheer is to mark his 34th birthday by playing in the final of World Twenty20, both he and India will need to discover better form.”It is easier to go after a bowler,” Dhoni said after a practice session at P Sara Stadium. “If you look at his performances he should get equal respect that Sachin gets. He is the Sachin for us when it comes to the bowling department.”He has led out attack for the last few years; he has been our best bowler whatever the format. Maybe in the last few games he has not got the wickets whether it be Test cricket, ODIs or T20 formats.”Zaheer’s three overs cost 32 in an uncomfortable India win against Afghanistan and you have to go back to the Sydney Test against Australia in January to discover a match in which he has taken more than two wickets. That was 19 matches ago, in all competitions.Until Sri Lanka’s pitches begin to tire, and become more conducive to turn, Zaheer’s form leaves a flaky Indian bowling attack particularly vulnerable. In comparing him to Tendulkar, Dhoni has played his biggest card of all.Zaheer is likely to play against England, and India are likely to retain their seven-batsmen balance, but there will be changes in personnel. L Balaji might be rested, as might R Ashwin, enabling Piyush Chawla and Ashok Dinda to advance their claims. But it is Zaheer whose performance will come under most scrutiny.”We have a chance of giving Zaheer a few games because we are in that stage where we can look to do that,” Dhoni said, “But other players who are part of the side we also want to give games to them so that in the knockout stage everybody has had a few games.”We are looking to make a few changes to our playing X1 so that most of the players get at least one game before going into the next stage. Later on if we are looking to play with the fifth bowler we will be able to play the fifth bowler who suits the conditions the best.”It may happen in this game but see how it goes in the coming game and then we will be in a better position to decide in the next stage whether we have to play with five bowlers or we can manage with four.”India still feel constrained by the fact that it was their seventh batsman, Rohit Sharma, who made runs in the 12-a-side warm-up against Pakistan and so is not easily disposable when so many other batsmen are yet to strike form. The warning to Zaheer was clear. “If you are playing with four bowlers and a part-timer, one of the bowlers can have an off-day at any time,” Dhoni said. “But if one becomes two then there is considerable amount of pressure about how you will manage the resources. It is only a few games that we have in our hand. We hope being the experienced cricketer he is, he gets back and really works for us.”

Newcastle fans split over Joelinton display in FA Cup clash

Newcastle United fans have been left split on striker Joelinton after his performance against Oxford United in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The Premier League club hosted League One opposition on Saturday but were unable to find a way through against Karl Robinson’s side and were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw.

Joelinton led the line for Bruce’s team and had two goals ruled out thanks to the offside flag; Newcastle had just four shots on target throughout the game, despite having 62% of the ball, per BBC Sport.

One miss saw him sky the ball from close-range as it sat up for a half-volley and some fans have slammed his display.

Who the heck is that?! Can you name all 25 of these obscure Newcastle signings…

However, some others believe that the 23-year-old was starved of service throughout the encounter and left to subsist on scraps.

Nevertheless, the striker has struggled throughout this season, scoring just twice in 27 outings.

The two sides will both be in the hat for the sixth round but a replay will be needed to decide whether Newcastle or Oxford progress.

Meanwhile, Newcastle fans have reacted to their new boy’s performance.

Middlesbrough wasting no time in addressing problems with van La Parra signing

According to The Birmingham Mail, Middlesbrough have announced the signing of Rajiv van La Parra from Huddersfield.

The Dutchman has been struggling for game time for The Terriers so far this season, and Tony Pulis has taken advantage of that by recruiting him for Boro’s promotion bid. He has made just five Premier League appearances under David Wagner this season and would have been growing restless.

This is an indication that Middlesbrough are aware of their flaws during the first half of the season, and are addressing them as quickly as possible. The club have had very little potency out wide so far this season, with a huge dearth of players in that position. Pulis, therefore, has tried to fashion wide men out of the current crop of players that he has, such as Martin Braithwaite, which has not been particularly successful.

However, Middlesbrough fans will surely be demanding more attacking signings, particularly with rumours surrounding the Dane Braithwaite’s future at The Riverside. In order to be truly competitive in the division and mount a promotion bid, Boro will need to score goals and have more firepower. Only four clubs have scored fewer goals than Middlesbrough this season, and it has been their frugality in defence that has saved them. Pulis will hope that van La Parra will be a stepping stone in the right direction for the club.

Boro are currently fifth in the Championship, which is a decent position given their poor run of form, whereby they have only won two of their last nine matches in all competitions.

Thierry Henry keen on replacing Bruce at Aston Villa

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry is keen on replacing Steve Bruce at Aston Villa, The Mirror reports.

What’s the word?

Aston Villa are in the market for a new manager after relieving Steve Bruce of his duties yesterday on the back of a woeful run of form that saw the promotion hopefuls win just one of their last ten matches in all competitions.

A number of names have already been touted to take charge at Villa Park, one of which is that of Arsenal’s all-time top-scorer Thierry Henry, and The Mirror reports the former striker is keen on taking charge over the Championship side.

Currently an assistant to Roberto Martinez with Belgium’s national side, helping in the nation’s World Cup in Russia, Henry is keen on becoming a manager in his own right and wants to take the first step in that journey with Villa.

The right appointment?

With Villa already struggling for form and hovering at the wrong end of the Championship standings, the concern with Henry is his lack of management experience and whether he could immediately get the club back on track.

Eyes may be cast to Frank Lampard’s performance at Derby County and Steven Gerrard’s impressive start with Rangers but both had months to prepare for the new season, handing them the ability to restructure the squad and playing style in a way they saw fit.

That said, he would still be a great coup for Villa and his appointment would the best news for a young striker like Tammy Abraham, who Henry could teach everything he knows.

Leeds fans back Ayling to impress

Leeds United will begin their preparations for the 2018-19 campaign with a pre-season clash against Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday night.

The match will be Marcelo Bielsa’s first as Leeds boss, having taken the job last month.

A number of players will be looking to impress Bielsa during pre-season, and there is no question that Luke Ayling falls into that category.

The 26-year-old missed almost the entirely of the second half of last season following ankle surgery, but did return against Queens Park Rangers on the final weekend.

Ayling is now in training with Leeds ahead of the new campaign, and the Championship club’s supporters have tipped the 6ft 1in defender to impress next term.

The Englishman was terrific for Leeds during the 2016-17 season, and will he hoping for a year free from injury as he looks to inspire the Whites to a possible promotion tilt.

Three reasons West Ham must hijack Real Betis’ bid to sign Ryan Boudebouz

According to reports in French publication L’Equipe, Real Betis are closing in on the signing of Montpellier attacking midfielder Ryan Boudebouz after agreeing a fee in the region of £6.2m for the player, but they are concerned that Premier League side West Ham United could still trump their offer.

According to France Football, via L’Equipe, on July 25, Slaven Bilic’s men were named as one of the potential suitors for Boudebouz with the Irons boss keen to strengthen his squad and attacking options following a disappointing campaign at the London Stadium – something he has already started to solve by bringing in Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez this summer.

The Algerian has been an influential performer for Montpellier since a move from Bastia in 2015 – form that has attracted the interest of a number of clubs – and he looks set to leave the side that only narrowly avoided relegation to Ligue 2 last term.

Even though a deal has been agreed between the Ligue 1 outfit and Real Betis, the Hammers certainly shouldn’t give up on the impressive 27-year-old.

Here are three reasons West Ham must hijack Real Betis’ move for Boudebouz…

Statistics

Only five players created more than 100 chances in Europe’s top five league’s last season – Mesut Ozil, Christian Eriksen, Kevin De Bruyne, a certain Dimitri Payet and top of the list – Boudebouz.

The 27-year-old created a remarkable 117 opportunities for his teammates in 33 Ligue 1 appearances last term and his creativity was one of the main reasons that Montpellier finished the campaign three points above the relegation zone.

Even though he only picked up nine assists throughout the campaign, he showed how influential he can be in front of goal by netting on 11 occasions, while he also proved that he can dribble by successfully completing 84 take-ons.

Potential

Last season, Boudebouz would probably have cut a frustrated figure if he was a West Ham player with a lack of strikers to create for as Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho spent the majority of the campaign on the sidelines through injury.

However, it should be a different story at the London Stadium next season after the Irons signed Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez, and the Algeria international would certainly be confident that the duo would be more than capable of putting away the chances he makes.

Hernandez in particular, who is known for his clinical finishing and finding himself in the right place at the right time could particularly benefit from Boudebouz’s creativity, and the partnership between the two could prove to be a fruitful one.

Price tag

L’Equipe says that despite Real Betis agreeing a fee of £6.2m for Boudebouz, the club president Lorenzo Serra Ferrer says they would be unable to match an offer of more than £7.6m, with the report suggesting that West Ham could get their man for a fee in the region of £11.2m.

If that is true, it is a bargain in the current market considering how influential the 27-year-old has shown he can be, and the Irons must consider paying the price.

Slaven Bilic’s men have certainly been missing that creative spark since Payet left for Marseille during the January transfer window, and the addition of Boudebouz in the middle of the park would go some way to solving that issue.

Stockdale’s 2016/17 in numbers – should Chelsea launch a shock bid?

Deadline Day is a funny old place, where the lines between fact and fiction are continually blurred as the most audacious of transfer rumours are suddenly adopted by the mainstream media. And one curious tale doing the rounds this morning is a potential Chelsea transfer bid for Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale, once of west London rivals Fulham, as an alternative to Cetlic No.1 and reported target Craig Gordon.[ad_pod id=’now-tv’ align=’centre’]This theory isn’t exactly new – last weekend, Mirror FootballÂcovered the story, with Thibaut Courtois’ understudy Asmir Begovic keen to complete a January move to Bournemouth. It didn’t gain a huge amount of traction but the Stockdale-to-Chelsea saga has emerged once again today, courtesy of talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams.

In addition to the above tweet, ‘The Moose’ said on talkSPORT this morning, as quoted by The Daily Star…

“I understand that Chelsea will turn their attention to another goalkeeper.ÂIt’s goalkeeper who plays for a team at the top of the Championship. They could go for Brighton keeper David Stockdale. That’s if they miss out on Craig Gordon.”

Whether there’s any truth to it remains to be seen. But as our infographic shows, the 31-year-old is enjoying a fantastic campaign with the Championship title hopefuls, keeping eleven clean sheets, conceding just 16 goals and making 47 saves in the process. Accordingly, that averages out at an impressive 3.1 saves per goal.

With his contract due to expire in the summer, we reckon Stockdale could prove to be a real bargain for the Blues, but do Chelsea fans agree?

Are goalkeeper’s getting better or worse?

Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is the third best player in the world behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, if last year’s Ballon D’Or verdict was anything to go by.

The summer’s transfer window had a very prevalent goalkeeping theme as well, with the likes of David De Gea, Petr Cech and Iker Casillas all moving, or nearly moving in the case of De Gea, to other clubs.

Not only this but teams are beginning to recognise the importance of having a good back-up goalkeeper. Barcelona’s treble winning team of last season consisted of two starting goalkeepers, manager Luis Enrique used Chile international Claudio Bravo for their league fixtures and German international Marc ter Stegen for Barca’s Champions League games, and it clearly worked very well.

Competition for goalkeeping places has often occurred at international level, with the likes of Spain, Italy and England in the Peter Shilton/Ray Clemence days, reaping the rewards of such competition. However, are goalkeepers getting better or worse, or is this article a waste of my time and even worse, yours?

Well you’ve read this far so you may as well see it through.

Every week there seems to be a 3-3, or a 4-2 in the Premier League round of fixtures. Top-flight English football is billed as an action-packed blockbuster with speedy wingers and clinical strikers, so why did Arsenal sign a thirty-something goalkeeper instead of a star striker?

Well the simple fact of the matter is this; goalkeepers prevent the opposition from scoring goals. The importance of an exceptional shot-stopper is so often overlooked in world-football.

From a young age we’re taught to pick the goalies last, it’s considered a thankless task, to put your body on line and take the occasional goal kick. In the park, to be a goalkeeper is almost a punishment, when between the sticks one reflects on their bad performance and uses the time to work out why they find themselves in this terrible position, the position of a goalkeeper.

The irony is, when in this predicament, you have the best view on the pitch. The very best goalkeepers are the eyes and ears for their managers, It’s the reason keepers increase in value with age, like an old fine wine or David Beckham. Why else would a manger so often entrust their goalkeepers with the captain’s armband?

The truth is goalkeepers are no better or worse than before. The only thing that has changed is the style of football being played. Yes, goalkeepers have to be slightly better with their feet, but fundamentally it is the same position it has always been.

More goals are being scored in the Premier League because more shots are being attempted than before, it’s as simple as that. Therefore keepers have an increased number of opportunities to showcase their skills with Hollywood saves, in their brightly coloured kits.

It all fits into football’s new glossy HD formula, the goalkeeper has been rebranded and people are no longer taking them for granted.

So next time you find yourself between the sticks in a kick about with your mates, just remember, you’re probably the most important person on the pitch.
