HBL and The Rest ride high on leads

A round-up of the second day’s action in the fourth round of the RBS Pentangular Cup

Cricinfo staff20-Jan-2010Abdur Rehman and Sarmad Anwar shared nine wickets among them to put Habib Bank Limited (HBL) in the driver’s seat against Sialkot at the National Stadium. Resuming on 368 for 8, HBL’s last two wickets yielded 53 runs, before the two bowlers went on the rampage. If Sarmad’s pace was too hot to handle for the top order, the rest fared no better against the left-arm spin of Rehman. Wickets fell at regular intervals with Sarmad accounting four of the top six batsmen. No. 8 Nayyer Abbas fought bravely for Sialkot with a stroke-filled 53, but was among Rehman’s five victims. Sialkot were bowled out for 243 in the 66th over, as the HBL openers negotiated the two remaining overs in the day to finish on 5 for no loss.Twin centuries from Umair Khan and Aamer Sajjad were the highlights of The Rest’s dominance with the bat against Karachi Blues at the Niaz Stadium. Both openers continued strongly from the overnight score of 91, with Umair Khan looking in good touch. Abid Ali departed for 59, but Umair’s century took them past Karachi’s first-innings total of 198. He had Saeed Anwar jnr (72) for company, but even after he fell for 115, the baton was picked up by Sajjad. Together with Saeed Anwar, Sajjad put on 104 for the third wicket. With The Rest sitting pretty at 445 for 4, and Sajjad unbeaten on 113, things look pretty dismal for the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy winners.

Foreign recruits plot South Australia win

An all-round performance masterminded by South Australia’s foreign recruits, Kieron Pollard and Shahid Afridi, helped them overcome Western Australia in Perth

Alex Malcolm29-Dec-2009
ScorecardOverseas signings Shahid Afridi and Kieron Pollard starred in South Australia’s victory over Western Australia in the Twenty20 Big Bash encounter at the WACA. Afridi, the player of the tournament in this year’s World Twenty20, shrugged off a first-ball duck in the first innings and produced a mesmerising spell of leg-spin bowling that gave him figures of 4 for 19 and the Man-of-the-Match award.Afridi entered the attack in the eighth over of the chase with the score on 81 without loss. The rousing start was thanks to Chris Gayle’s brutal assault that yielded 40 runs in 16 balls. The scoreboard damage he inflicted was minimal in comparison to what some spectators might have suffered if struck by one of his three massive sixes.Such was the power of Gayle’s bat-swing, the West Indies captain strained a side-muscle and had to retire hurt. The severity of his injury is yet to be determined, but it could have ramifications not only for Western Australia’s fortunes in this tournament but also for the West Indies’ campaign in the ODI series in February.Following Gayle’s retirement, Afridi knocked over Ronchi and began to stifle the run-scoring in telling fashion as his second over went for just four runs.Gayle returned, clearly sore, to join Adam Voges and the game hung in the balance before Shaun Tait removed them both in the 18th over to atone for spraying four balls in his first spell which cost 12 wides. Afridi then cleaned up the tail to seal victory for the Redbacks.Earlier, South Australia’s other import Kieron Pollard proved his performance in the Champions League for Trinidad and Tobago wasn’t a one-off when he clubbed 45 from 31 balls to set up the match-winning total of 196. He was ably supported by Mark Cosgrove (42) and Cameron Borgas, whose unbeaten cameo of 34 in 16 balls was part of a 60-run stand that propelled the Redbacks to a monumental score.

Hodge ready for Nannes face-off

Dirk Nannes to Brad Hodge. That’s the likely scenario for Victoria’s first ball at the Champions League Twenty20 but the coach Greg Shipperd said he was confident Shane Harwood and Peter Siddle could stand up as a new-ball combination in the absence of Nannes, one of the most fearsome Twenty20 bowlers in the world.Nannes was born and bred in Victoria and has been a key part of their formidable Twenty20 record but at the Champions League he will be playing for his IPL side, Delhi Daredevils, who Victoria face in their opening match. Shipperd said the depth of Victoria’s fast-bowling quality was one of their strengths and they had the players to cover for Nannes.”Shane Harwood not that many weeks ago had a shoulder cleanup and he’s come through his preparations very well,” Shipperd said. “He’s an absolute key for us. Peter Siddle, who hasn’t played a lot of Twenty20 cricket at all for Victoria now becomes a weapon for us.”It’s a magnificent opportunity for Peter. He’s in good form at the moment and forms with Shane a world-class opening combination. We do have a world-class opening combination with the bat and to have one with the ball is also absolutely critical.”Cameron White and David Hussey are key men but the most important player in the batting order is Hodge, who will open. Hodge, 34, can’t find a place in the Australian team in any format but he has a reputation as one of the world’s premier Twenty20 batsman, averaging 41.60 at a strike-rate of 132 from 68 games.Hodge said he was not feeling any extra pressure despite being one of the most accomplished players in the 12-team competition. But his personal success is critical to Victoria’s chances and with one of Delhi, Victoria and Wayamba dropping out after the cut-throat group stage, much will rest on the start Hodge gives Victoria against Nannes.”It’s going to be a reality and the chances are I’ll be taking the first ball against him,” Hodge said. “It’s something we can’t get around and I’ll just be looking forward to the competition.”There’s a lot of talent out there. But I think if you look at our squad, we’ve got a number of internationals who’ve played as well. We’ve got a lot of experience. I think our batting is definitely a strength and we’ve just got to use that. If you stacked up our batting against anyone else’s in the competition, it’s as good as any.”Victoria have won the Australian domestic Twenty20 title three of the four years it has been held, and have only ever lost three matches in the format. They are playing down their chances on the world stage but are quietly confident that their steady, familiar group can match the mish-mash of players in IPL teams.”I think a par result would certainly be to qualify for the second round,” Shipperd said. “That would be a lovely opportunity to move into that and have three more games of cricket. Everyone’s going to be a little bit nervous in the first couple of games. This has been a project four years in the making … but certainly we’re going there to win, no doubt about that.”The Victorians fly out for India on Friday morning and they will be without one of their original 15-man squad, the fast bowler Damien Wright. He has been ruled out with a calf strain and will be replaced by the young allrounder James Pattinson.

O'Brien and Wessels dominate Surrey

ScorecardThis is Northamptonshire’s game in hand on their two closest promotion rivals – Gloucestershire and Derbyshire – and after an opening day of hard toil they reaped the benefits with a strong effort at The Oval. Firstly they removed Surrey’s last five wickets for 56 then marched powerfully onto 332 for 4, led by a dashing hundred from Riki Wessels and a stylish ton from Niall O’Brien. The two wicketkeepers added 159 in 31 overs as they feasted on some awful bowling and quickly changed a game Surrey briefly thought they were edging. O’Brien and Wessels came together after Jade Dernbach claimed two in two balls; Stephen Peters was brilliantly held in the gully and Alex Wakely paid the price for playing to leg against the swing, losing his off stump to leave Northamptonshire 26 for 2.O’Brien initially raced out of the blocks, reaching 26 from 12 balls, against a wayward Alex Tudor, who was removed after an opening spell of 2-0-26-0. However, Wessels soon took up the attack and put away a series of help-yourself offerings. He went to his first hundred of the season – and fourth overall – from 94 balls with the second of three consecutive boundaries off James Anyon. That Surrey broke through was down to a Northamptonshire error, as O’Brien called Wessels back for a dangerous second run and the latter was well short when Rangana Herath’s throw came in from long leg. O’Brien, though, composed himself and ensured he didn’t waste his hard work.Following his lightning start, O’Brien reined himself in and took 59 balls over his first fifty then reached his hundred from 150 deliveries when he tucked Matthew Spriegel through midwicket. He is a classy batsman – a point demonstrated on the one-day international stage for Ireland – and promotion to Division One would allow him to push his game further. Sadly for O’Brien, England aren’t short of keepers so Test honours are unlikely, although Ireland will be grateful they won’t lose another star name. When past his hundred he dispatched Herath for six over deep midwicket but Chris Schofield, after two big appeals in two balls, finally had him caught at slip from a drive. However, by now Rob White was also in on the act and he too had three figures in sight by the close of play.Surrey have only bowled a team out twice once this season (Northamptonshire were the unlucky side in the previous meeting) and on the evidence of today’s bowling it’s not hard to see why. Dernbach is the only who can hold his head reasonably high, but to say the combined efforts of Tudor and Anyon were a disappointment would be an understatement. Both Tudor and Anyon, who is on loan from Warwickshire, are trying to earn contracts for next season but after this showing Chris Adams’ signature won’t be poised on the dotted line. Between them they sent down 15 overs for 104 and the figures aptly demonstrate what was on offer.Neither did Surrey’s spinners offer much control. Herath, the Sri Lankan left-armer, has so far found taking county wickets much harder than bowling out Pakistan and New Zealand. The pitch didn’t offer him, or Schofield much, but they also struggled to tie up an end for Stewart Walters. However, the surface was starting to produce a touch of spin. That could yet develop over the next two days and Surrey’s final total of 376 was below expectations. It was three South Africans who wrapped up the effort as Jon Batty hadn’t added to his overnight total when he cut Johan van der Wath straight to point, then Nicky Boje prised out Tudor from a lofted drive and Herath to a top-edged sweep.Schofield played positively and struck two clean sixes as he reached a 70-ball half-century before becoming one of two late scalps for Andrew Hall.

Nannes picks Delhi Daredevils over Victoria

Dirk Nannes has opted to play for the Delhi Daredevils in the inaugural Champions League instead of his home team, the Victoria Bushrangers

Cricinfo staff27-Aug-2009No Pietersen for BangaloreKevin Pietersen, as expected, has not been included in Royal Challengers Banglaore’s preliminary 20-man squad for the Champions League. He hasn’t played since the second Ashes Test last month due to a heel injury, and was also not in England’s squad for next month’s Champions Trophy, which finishes three days before the start of the Twenty20 tournament.Dirk Nannes, the Australian fast bowler, has opted to play for the Delhi Daredevils in the inaugural Champions League instead of his home team Victoria. This makes Nannes the only player to pick his IPL team over the other possible side he could have represented in the Twenty20 tournament.Delhi will have to pay Victoria US$200,000 for Nannes’ services in the 12-team event. Nannes, who regularly bowls in the high 140kph region, had kept Glenn McGrath out of Delhi’s XI with a string of impressive performances in this year’s IPL, and was instrumental in Victoria’s third successive domestic Twenty20 victory in 2007-08.Nannes had also spearheaded Netherlands’ bowling during the World Twenty20 in June, and has since been selected by Australia for two Twenty20 games against England next month. The other players who were eligible for multiple teams in the Champions League will compete for their ‘home’ teams in the tournament, while Dwayne Smith – considered an ‘away’ player for both Deccan and Sussex – will represent his English team.

Cusack fifty steadies Ireland

Ireland gained the upper hand on the third day of their Intercontinental Cup match against Kenya despite the absence of a powerful performance from any of their players

Ireland gained the upper hand on the third day of their Intercontinental Cup match against Kenya despite the absence of a powerful performance from any of their players. They began the day with an opportunity to seize a large first-innings lead but ended up with only a handy one, which they built on after a few hiccups in their second innings.Kenya resumed at their overnight score of 239 for 6, trailing by 165 runs in the first innings, but were jolted early on by the dismissal of Jimmy Kamande for 73, lbw to Regan West, after an addition of only eight runs this morning. Ireland had their opening to secure a lead in excess of 100 but faced resistance from Thomas Odoyo and Peter Ongondo, who made 46 and 24 respectively to whittle the deficit towards unthreatening proportions. The innings ended when West trapped Elijah Otieno with the score on 331, securing a 73-run lead for Ireland.Steve Tikolo had taken six wickets in Ireland’s first innings and he swiftly took his match tally to eight, bowling Paul Stirling for 6 before picking up Jeremy Bray for 15. Ireland slipped into more trouble – 47 for 3 – when Andre Botha was run out by the wicketkeeper Maurice Ouma. The innings needed an anchor and found one in Alex Cusack who played patiently and shared useful, if not substantial, partnerships of 42 with Kevin O’Brien and 50 with Andrew White. He ended the day on 55 not out and steered Ireland to 139 for 4, leading by 212 runs in the second innings with a day to play.

Man Utd linked to Federico Chiesa

Manchester United enjoyed a successful summer transfer window, but their struggles on the pitch since have seen them linked with a move for Juventus winger Federico Chiesa.

What’s the story?

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Red Devils are interested in securing the highly-rated 24-year-old’s services as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to add further reinforcements to his faltering forward line.

Chiesa was linked with a switch to the Premier League following his impressive exploits during Euro 2020 before eventually staying put in Turin, but United’s woes in the opening weeks of the current campaign could see them make a move over the coming months.

Imagine him and Rashford

The Italy international spent last season on loan at Juve from Fiorentina, but the Old Lady made the deal permanent after splashing out €60m (£51.44m) following an eye-catching maiden campaign by the youngster.

In 46 appearances in all competitions, Chiesa bagged 15 goals and provided a further 11 assists for his teammates before carrying his form onto the international stage with the Azzurri.

He was a crucial component of Roberto Mancini’s victorious side at the European Championship, finding the back of the net on two occasions during his seven outings as Italy were crowned champions.

And Chiesa has continued to dazzle his opponents upon his return to the Allianz Arena. After he scored the winner against Chelsea in their recent Champions League encounter, pundit Rio Ferdinand claimed his English suitors had missed out on a star after not signing him during the summer.

He told BT Sport: “He’s a huge player and he’s been linked with a few clubs in England. I’m sure they’re thinking ‘why didn’t we get him?’. He’s just a fantastic footballer.

“The intensity with which he plays with, we saw in the Euros he was the main goal threat for the Italians who went on to win the tournament. It’s his pace, his drive. He’s the one who is the threat, he’s potent, he wants to run in behind.

“He’s that modern-day striker who can play anywhere across the front line and he’s as comfortable out wide as he is through the middle. He unnerves defenders with that pace, he’s so direct,” added Ferdinand.

With Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo deep into the twilight of their careers and Mason Greenwood expected to fill the void up front when the pair eventually depart, United may well be in the market for another winger sooner than expected.

And Chiesa could be the ideal candidate to wreak havoc down the flanks, with Marcus Rashford on the opposite wing.

The duo could form a formidable partnership at Old Trafford for many years to come, and the £76m-rated gem has the potential to fire the 20-time English champions back to their former glory, especially as Jadon Sancho’s struggles continue.

Harry Winks wants to leave Tottenham

As per CaughtOffside, yet another Tottenham Hotspur player now wants to leave the club as a major update emerges on the future of midfielder Harry Winks.

The Lowdown: Spurs exit demands…

Over the summer, it’s safe to say there were a few Tottenham first team regulars linked with moves away from north London.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, the most high-profile of them all in Harry Kane informed Spurs of his desire to leave and compete for trophies on the biggest stages in world football (Sky Sports). As well as the England captain, club record signing Tanguy Ndombele also told the Lilywhites that he would like an N17 exit (The Telegraph).

While both failed to get their wish, news has now emerged on yet another Tottenham player in Winks wanting to depart north London.

The Lowdown: Winks update emerges…

As per CaughtOffside’s information, the Spurs midfielder is now ‘keen to move on due to a continued lack of playing time’.

They added that Spurs are now ‘set to offload’ the 25-year-old when the January transfer window opens, with club chiefs now willing to part company with the ten-cap England international.

Despite no club making a formal approach, CaughtOffside expect ‘several sides’ to enter the race for Winks in three months’ time when the winter market opens for business.

The Latest: Time to go?

It has been quite a long while since Spurs supporters have seen the best of Winks. Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino once branded the player as ‘amazing’, but in the last year, he has arguably failed to make much of an impact on the field.

Jose Mourinho’s bit-part use of the midfielder last season is largely to blame but it seems that Nuno Espirito Santo isn’t that big of a fan either, having started him in just one Premier League game this season (WhoScored).

While he is still fairly young and commands a somewhat respectable market value (£18m on Transfermarkt), we believe that it’s time Tottenham look for buyers, with the 25-year-old eager to leave and unable to break into a team whose form has collapsed over the last three weeks.
