We are not against drugs tests – Harbhajan

The offspinner feels the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA’s) clause to reveal one’s round-the-year location is illogical

Spinner Harbhajan Singh has said India’s cricketers are not opposed to drug tests but the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA’s) clause to reveal one’s round-the-year location, which he felt was illogical.Harbhajan is on the ICC’s International Registered Testing Pool (IRTP) and was among the three cricketers who met ICC officials and subsequently expressed reservations about the WADA guidelines to the BCCI working committee last Sunday. “We are not against drug tests. They can test us every single day, before or after a match, before or after a net session, we don’t mind that. We would love to have a drug-free sport. But is this the only way?” he told the .The offspinner said he and his colleagues would accept what is decided at the ICC executive board meeting with BCCI and WADA officials. “We will follow whatever the BCCI tells us,” he said.Responding to criticism by Indian Olympians of the cricketers’ stance, Harbhajan said: “People should stick to their own business and not speak about what we should or shouldn’t do, or teach us how to behave. We don’t interfere in any other sports or speak of what other sportsmen should do.”Harbhajan said he had been tested several times and never had a problem. “I have been tested at least 15 to 20 times… We are not against it. We are responsible people and we know what we have to do,” he said.

Journo believes Joe Aribo is on many club’s radar

Crystal Palace could face stiff competition for the signature of Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo in the coming months after Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge claimed he was on the radar of several clubs.

What’s the story?

The Eagles have been heavily linked with a move for the 25-year-old in recent weeks as new manager Patrick Vieira looks to bolster his first-team squad this January, but they’re unlikely to be the only interest party.

Bridge told GIVEMESPORT: I’m sure people are watching him. He’s a very skilful player. We can question the Scottish Premiership, sure, but he’s been brilliant in the Europa League.

“He’s got European experience and played in countless Old Firm games. The Motherwell’s, Hearts’ and Aberdeen’s away aren’t as done and dusted as people think.”

Crystal Palace fans will be worried

Palace have reportedly been monitoring Aribo’s situation at Ibrox amid speculation he was keen to depart Glasgow giants over the coming months, and Football Insider recently reported that the Gers will demand £10m-plus for one of their prized assets over the winter window.

The former Charlton Athletic ace was a pivotal part of the side that ended Rangers’ ten-year wait for a Scottish Premiership title last term, cementing his place in the club’s history as a result.

However, after scoring 19 goals and laying on a further 17 assists in 109 appearances for Steven Gerrard’s charges, it appears as though the 6-foot maestro is ready for a new challenge.

His arrival in south London would be warmly welcomed by the Palace supporters, with his tactical intelligence, tenacity and eye for goal all attributes that make his potential addition an exciting one.

As a result, Bridge’s claim that multiple people will be watching Aribo is likely to leave a large section of the capital club’s supporters feeling worried.

Conor Gallagher is only on a 12-month loan deal at Selhurst Park, and the Nigeria international would be an ideal replacement but it appears as if the Eagles will have to be drawn into a tussle to secure him, if Bridge’s claim is to be believed.

Townsend has been WBA’s key figure this season

While West Brom may not have had a perfect start to their Championship campaign with 17 games played, the Baggies are still very much in the mix to secure a promotion place by the end of the season, currently sat in third place in the league table with 32 points from nine wins, five draws and three defeats under their belt.

One player that has played a big part in West Brom’s season so far is defender Conor Townsend, who has started all 17 of their league games and ultimately played more minutes than any other Baggies player, showing just how important he is for Valerien Ismael.

In addition to this, the 28-year-old has also highlighted his versatility on the pitch by playing as a centre-back, left-back and left-midfielder at times this season, which is a big sign as to why Ismael has picked him to start so many times.

Regarding his performances, from a defensive point of view, Townsend has racked up an average of 2.8 aerials won (47 in total), 1.8 tackles, 1.5 clearances and 1.4 interceptions per game in the Championship, proving himself as a vital part of West Brom’s back line.

As well as his defensive contributions, Townsend has also proven himself to be a useful attacking outlet for the team, contributing an average of 1.5 key passes per match, with the Englishman securing two assists for the team which came during their 2-2 draw against AFC Bournemouth on the opening day of the season followed by their 1-1 draw against Millwall back in September.

Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to say that Townsend, who has been described as a “confident” player on the ball by Baggies journalist Steve Madeley, has been a real hero for Ismael this season given his versatility, reliability and all-round ability up and down the pitch.

Moving forward, with Dara O’Shea still out injured for the next few months and the fact that Kean Bryan has now been ruled out for the remainder of the season through injury, Ismael will undoubtedly be hoping that Townsend will be able to keep fit for the rest of the campaign.

He’ll need to keep delivering the sort of performances that he has been doing, as he could give the Baggies a great chance of securing a place back in the Premier League.

Tottenham transfer news on Zaniolo

Tottenham Hotspur are now reportedly eyeing up a potential move to sign Nicolo Zaniolo.

The Lowdown: Spurs have tried before

It has been reported that Spurs tried to sign Zaniolo back in 2019 under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino, but in the end they brought in the manager’s countryman, Giovani Lo Celso, instead.

Lo Celso has of course been affected by injuries during his time with the club, as one insider noted recently that his inability to complete 90 minutes is a big problem for Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Latest: Enquiry

As per Calciomercato, the North London club have ‘taken information’ about Zaniolo in recent weeks, despite the fact he looks set to sign a new deal at Roma.

He wants more money that he is currently being offered by the Serie A side, meaning that Nuno’s team could still take advantage of the situation if there is a breakdown in talks.

The Verdict: Sign

Once likened to England legend and former Lilywhites player Paul Gascoigne by his agent Claudio Vigorelli, Zaniolo is the creative spark in midfield that THFC need.

He has scored 15 goals and made a further six assists during his time at Roma, and has also scored two goals for Italy (Transfermarkt).

At 22 years of age, the £36m-rated maestro has a lot of potential, and with former Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho currently managing Roma, Spurs may be able to strike a deal.

Little separates England and New Zealand

Even the bookies cannot split the teams. In a repeat of the 1993 final at Lord’s, England will face New Zealand at North Sydney Oval on Sunday in a match holding much promise. England were victorious in the original match-up, with their second title, but New Zealand have since etched their names on the trophy with a win in 2000.Neither side have won the World Cup away from home – but one of them is now guaranteed to do so here in Australia. And, if they both play to their potential, this could be the most exciting final yet and, naturally, a great advertisement for the game when the world is watching. The tournament’s most dominant teams, the sides each lost one match en route to the final, with England triumphing in the head-to-head. Having looked utterly unstoppable, however, England then came up against a fierce Australia, baying for any blood after being shut out in the cold.England had already qualified, but it was the end of their 17-win streak, and there was a worrying batting collapse to boot. Still, their captain Charlotte Edwards has brushed off such concerns as “hopefully a minor blip.” Speaking at the press conference at the SCG on Saturday, she said: “We’re all really looking forward to it. We’re all ready.”New Zealand, meanwhile, started their campaign with some batting wobbles, but have stabilised in recent matches. They are easily capable of taking the title, which would be a second for Haidee Tiffen, the only survivor from the successful home campaign of 2000, who draws comparison with her current side. “Whilst the teams are different, certainly the passion, dedication, commitment and pride for our country is evident in both teams,” Tiffen said. “The one thing I will be telling the girls is to enjoy it.”This tournament has thrown up surprises and challenges, though, and so it is impossible to say which of these tight-knit units has the advantage. Both sides have strong batting line-ups, and they field and bowl well – and both are up for the cup.Tiffen said it was about self belief. “It’s about sticking to your role within the team. England have got three or four top-class batsmen that are really in good form at the moment. We need to take our opportunities and try to get them out early. It’s about being consistent in all areas of the game.”We need to stick to our gameplans and we’re a team that bats right down and we need to make sure that we’re using our resources wisely and giving ourselves the best opportunity to win the match. We’ve got attacking batters that can put the ball in all areas of the ground and we’d be stupid not to use that.”Gary Stead, the New Zealand coach, said his side would “go hard” at England. “We are going to try to smash them off the ground early in the game,” he had already promised – or threatened, depending on whose side you’re on.For her part, Edwards was guarded. “Tomorrow’s game is about who deals with the pressure the best out of the two teams and whose key performers perform,” she said. “There are two good teams who are very evenly matched and who’s going to play the best cricket on the day is going to win the game.”The world’s No. 1 batsman Claire Taylor has impressed all who have seen her and has continued her exciting form in this tournament, too. New Zealand will certainly look to target her, Sarah Taylor and Edwards. With the ball, fast bowlers Katherine Brunt and Isa Guha, the world’s No 1 bowler, are of note along with spinner Holly Colvin. Jenny Gunn is their star allrounder.Tiffen is the form batsman for New Zealand. Averaging a fraction under 50 in the tournament and struck a timely maiden ODI hundred in the final group game against Pakistan. But for sheer excitement, look no further than Suzie Bates, who her own captain describes as “a freak”.If ever this is England’s time to win their third World Cup, it’s now. They have won the last 17 of 18 matches on the spin. Their well-honed and hungry team is that classic cocktail named Youth and Experience, mixed to perfection with a generous dash of confidence. They aim to stir, not be shaken – and to be the first England side, men or women, to put their country’s name on an ICC trophy. Then again, it’s also New Zealand’s time. They have a similar make-up to England and had one of their best chances to wrest back the Rose Bowl prior to tour, continuing the good run into the trophy. They play their best when aggressive which can mean higher risks but when it comes off, it does in style, as with Suzie Bates’ breathtaking 168 in their final Super Six match against Pakistan. These warrior-like cricketers will be keen for a successful hunt with prime spoils up for grabs but a buoyant England are just as capable of going in for the kill.

Everton must unleash Yerry Mina on Burnley

Not too many issues have emerged since Rafa Benitez took charge of Everton but if we really want to criticise an aspect of their play, you don’t need to look too much further than their defence.

They have kept just one clean sheet in the league so far and even conceded to Championship opposition in dismal fashion during a Carabao Cup game.

On the chalkboard

With plenty of defensive injuries, you can hardly blame a few indifferent performances at the back.

Yet, a pairing of Mason Holgate and Michael Keane was never going to go down too well.

The former made a horrendous mistake against Aston Villa towards the back end of last season when he was caught in possession after turning back towards his own goal which allowed Ollie Watkins to find the net.

A similar error occurred with Keane this term as well. Too slow to turn just beyond the halfway line, Patrick Bamford stole in and then supplied Mateusz Klich’s strike in the clash with Leeds.

They didn’t concede against Brighton but with an encounter against Burnley to come on Monday evening, they need some stronger players physically.

This is where Yerry Mina comes in. The Colombian missed the game with the Seagulls a fortnight ago and hasn’t been a pillar of solidity himself this term.

He endured a pitiful clash with Bamford in that draw with Leeds where he was ultimately described as an “embarrassment” by Jeff Stelling and “pathetic” by Michael Dawson on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday.

Yet, his profile will be extremely important against a team that play in the way Burnley do. Standing at 6 foot 5, the centre-back is a colossal presence and can consequently use that to his advantage.

Last term, the £135k-per-week earner won 2.8 aerial duels per game which was the second-highest value of any central defender at Goodison Park.

So far this season, no other team has played more balls above shoulder height in the Premier League per 90 minutes than Burnley. Despite playing one fewer game than everybody else barring their Monday opponents, the Clarets have registered 118 high balls per 90.

They have also won more aerial duels per 90 (26.7) than every other team in the Premier League. For context, Everton have only been victorious in 15.7 over the same metric.

With that in mind, Mina simply has to start on Monday night. Using the height he possesses, he could be the difference in preventing Burnley’s long-ball game.

AND in other news, Forget Keane: Everton must unleash “powerful” £68k-p/w beast, he’s Rafa’s game-changer…

Liverpool were interested in Ward-Prowse

Liverpool were widely believed to be in the market for a central midfielder this summer, and a surprise transfer target has been revealed following the conclusion of the window.

What’s the story?

The Reds were left with a sizeable gap in their engine room following the departure of Gini Wijnaldum, and the likes of Saul Niguez and Renato Sanches were linked with a move to Merseyside as a result.

No formal offer materialised for any potential target, though, but Goal’s Liverpool reporter Neil Jones has revealed a previously unknown Premier League star was on their wish list. According to Jones, the Reds were interested in signing Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse, as he was someone who caught the eye of the club’s hierarchy and was looked at by the recruitment team.

However, nothing came of the Anfield club’s interest, and despite several bids from Aston Villa, the 26-year-old put pen to paper on a new contract at St Mary’s, committing his future to the south coast outfit.

Jurgen Klopp will be gutted

After rising through the ranks of his boyhood club, Ward-Prowse has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top midfielders outside of the traditional ‘big six’ clubs, scoring 34 goals and providing 42 assists in 326 appearances for the Saints.

The £27m-rated beast has cultivated a reputation as a tireless workhorse in the middle of the park, blessed with a brilliant passing range and outstanding dead ball ability in recent years, earning himself eight England caps and a raft of plaudits.

One admirer is former Celtic striker Chris Sutton, who lauded the Southampton captain a previous edition of the BBC’s Football Daily podcast (as relayed by This is Futbol).

“(He’s) such an important player for Southampton. His technique from free-kicks has been so good for a long time. How he can generate the pace to get it up and down over the wall is incredible,” Sutton said.

“He’s a really good footballer, isn’t he, a versatile footballer, Gareth Southgate rates him highly. He’s been in the (England) squad now for a while.

“For Southampton, he’s a player now who I think all the players there look to.”

Therefore, Klopp is likely to be gutted that the Liverpool hierarchy didn’t make a move for Ward-Prowse over the summer despite their interest.

His addition to the club’s ranks would have seriously bolstered the German’s options in the middle of the park, adding the strength in depth needed to fight on multiple fronts.

Cyclone scare looms over Chennai Test

The first Test between India and England in Chennai starting on Thursday is likely to be disrupted by rain and there is the threat of a cyclone over the state of Tamil Nadu over the next few days

The first Test between India and England in Chennai, starting on Thursday, faces the strong possibility of rain disruptions and the fallout from a weakened cyclone over the state of Tamil Nadu over the next few days.England arrived in Chennai on Monday to resume their tour of India but the team could be denied adequate practice if the rain persists in the city. Showers early this morning flooded the outfield at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and the Indians were forced to remain indoors. England are due to train later in the day but that may also be affected. The official website of the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted thunderstorms with rain in Chennai on Wednesday and Thursday, suggesting that at least the first day of the Test could be affected. On Sunday, it said a depression over the Bay of Bengal had moved further westwards towards the Tamil Nadu coast but had weakened. However, other weather sites are more optimistic – CNN has predicted showers only from Saturday.”For the next 48 hours, there could be one or two spells of rain and cloudy weather will prevail due to activity of the North-East monsoon over Tamil Nadu,” SR Ramanan, the Meteorological Centre regional director, told . “There is no alert of low pressure or depression in the Bay of Bengal. This is only a normal monsoon activity. Gradual reduction of rainfall is expected from Thursday.”The weather will doubtless affect the pitch as well. The rainfall over the past month has complicated matters for the head groundsman, K Parthasarathy. “We need bright sunshine to prepare a good wicket but there has been a lot of rain,” Parthasarathy was quoted as saying in the local newspapers. The Test was originally scheduled for Mumbai but the terror attacks in the city and fears of player security prompted a complete overhaul of the venues for the Tests. England returned home midway through the one-day series after the terror strikes and while negotiations were on between the respective cricket boards to resume the tour, the players trained in Abu Dhabi. Unfortunately, rain disrupted their preparations for a day last week.Chennai has had a history of washouts and rain-affected draws since 2003. Tests against Australia and Sri Lanka were drawn and a one-dayer with South Africa in 2005 was abandoned without a ball being bowled. The Challenger Trophy final the following year was also affected and the teams had to share the trophy.
