Leeds: Newcastle rejected Whites approach for Karl Darlow

Newcastle rejected an approach from Leeds United for fringe goalkeeper Karl Darlow this summer, according to Football Insider.

The Whites had launched an enquiry to sound out their chances of landing the 28-year-old shot-stopper on loan or through a permanent deal, but saw their advances rebuffed by the Magpies.

Leeds were in the market for reinforcements between the posts this summer, as the Elland Road natives allowed youth product Bailey Peacock-Farrell to join Burnley for a reported £2.5million (BBC).

Before the Clarets sealed a deal for the Northern Irishman, Leeds were still contemplating the future of former Real Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla, whose errors in West Yorkshire following his winter arrival raised doubt over his long-term future at the Championship club.

Darlow was therefore considered as an early candidate to replace what would become a vacant role in Marcelo Bielsa’s ranks, as the Northampton-born man was thought to be keen on securing regular football having entered the final year of his Newcastle contract, where he featured just once all season in 2018/19 (TransferMarkt).

Leeds’ pursuit soon fell cold, and Football Insider have now revealed that was because Newcastle refused to negotiate a potential deal for Darlow, and are now willing to see the Nottingham Forest product hit free agency next summer so long as he remains Martin Dubravka’s understudy for the remainder of the term.

It remains to be seen if Leeds missing out on Darlow was a positive or a negative for the West Yorkshire outfit, as the 28-year-old would have arrived at Elland Road without tasting regular football since Dubravka arrived at Newcastle in January 2018.

Since then, Darlow has only been involved in Premier League action as an unused substitute, while his two outings in the Carabao Cup saw the Northampton-born shot-stopper concede four goals (TransferMarkt) – three of which came against his boyhood side Forest, a team that ended 2018/19 ninth in the Championship.

Failing to secure a deal for the £3.15million-rated (TransferMarkt) Magpies fringe option also led Leeds to secure Illan Meslier’s services on a loan-to-buy arrangement with FC Lorient, and the 19-year-old Frenchman impressed some of the Elland Road faithful (via HITC) when he made his U23s debut against Millwall.

If the Lorient product can repeat more of those performances in the junior ranks, he may prove to be the better option, and one that can work towards replacing Casilla in the first-team.

Leeds fans, would you have been happy had your side secured a deal for Darlow over Meslier? Let us know in the comments below…

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa needs to cut to the chase with Eddie Nketiah this weekend

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Marcelo Bielsa’s side will need to bounce back this afternoon when they face Swansea.

A top of the table clash, the Swans travel to Elland Road in second place, only behind the Whites on goal difference.

Since Graham Potter left, they’ve been mightily impressive and their position in the league is fine evidence of that.

Therefore, it won’t be an easy ride for Leeds, especially after their midweek defeat on penalties.

One thing that may make it easier, however, is by starting Eddie Nketiah.

On the chalkboard

Nketiah has been in superb form since signing on loan this summer and in just four games he’s scored three goals.

Only two of those outings have been starts as he began games against Salford and Stoke in the League Cup, finding the back of the net in both whilst he’s also starred from the bench.

He was the hero against Brentford a week and a half ago, scoring a poacher’s effort from close range after Helder Costa’s cross.

After a few weeks of teasing the 20-year-old, Bielsa has to cut to the chase.

The fact of the matter is that now should be the time to pair him in attack with Patrick Bamford.

The latter sat out of Leeds’ defeat against Stoke on Tuesday and he too has found himself in good form, netting four in five Championship outings.

The signs are there that Bielsa wants to field Nketiah and that was evident when he hinted that he and Bamford could feature in a pair together.

Last weekend, Leeds played with Jack Harrison and the former Middlesbrough man in a two, thus making it not completely beyond the realms of possibility that the Arsenal loan man could soon start.

Harrison managed six dribbles but just one shot last weekend so there’d be a logic behind suggesting someone like Nketiah could bring them added goal threat.

In just 13 minutes against Brentford, he had two shots, putting himself firmly in the right areas to find the goal.

Versus a Swansea side who have only conceded four, this could prove vital on Saturday.

Manchester United’s Andreas Pereira wants to become "best in the world"

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Manchester United youngster Andreas Pereira wants to be the best player in the world one day, and believes he can get there with a little bit of luck.

What’s the word?

Pereira spoke about all things football in a revealing interview with Youtube channel Pilhado.

The 23 year-old joked about his passionate support for Brazilian outfit Santos, and was then asked the difficult question of whether he could become the best in the world.

Via Sport Witness, he said: “I think it depends a lot if I start playing now at Manchester United. Be a starter. I think it has to be step by step. You have to first play at Man United, start, go to the national team, start conquering your space.

“I think I trust my ability, and I think it’s possible. But it’s a lot of work and you have to be a little lucky too. I believe. I think if I don’t believe it, I think I’m wrong.

“Playing at 23 years old at Manchester, and knowing that I can play, and don’t believe it, I think I’m wrong as a pro. I think in my position, one day, I can fight for the best in the world. And I work day to day for it.”

Healthy competitive attitude

Pereira’s verdict may be a bit optimistic, but he’s not exactly going to say he doesn’t believe in his own abilities is he?

More importantly, he actually makes a very valid point, that if he can break into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s at the tender age of 23 he has a very good chance to be considered one of the world’s best.

A long career in the heart of United’s midfield would surely yield some silverware and accolades, and he has already shown glimpses of his quality in his limited appearances thus far.

His comments also show the spirit Solskjaer has spread throughout the Old Trafford dressing room. The fact that he not only has lofty personal ambitions, but also wants to “fight” for his place in the XI, reveals the boss has fostered an excellent attitude of competition in his squad.

The Brazilian ace started the opening league fixture against Chelsea but was left on the bench until the last minute of the draw at Wolves, but fans should take promise from the fact he is so desperate to prove himself at United.

Spurs set to receive another bid from Roma from Toby Alderweireld

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Roma are set to launch another bid for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld before the transfer deadline, per Calciomercato.

What’s the word?

Alderweireld’s £25m release clause has expired, though that is no guarantee that he will stay at the club.

The Belgium international remains a target for the Serie A club, with Franco Baldini, a key figure behind the scenes at the Italian club, twice meeting with Spurs to discuss a deal for the defender.

However, Calciomercato reports that Spurs still want €28m (£25.6m) for the 30-year-old, a fee that is out of Roma’s reach.

Instead, the Italian club would like to pay €20m (£18.3m) for the player, because his contract expires next summer.

Decision time

This is a difficult one for Spurs.

One instantly feels that £18.3m is small change for a player of Alderweireld’s quality and is also £6.7m less than the clause that was available throughout the summer.

And yet, if Spurs opt against accepting such a proposal, they run the risk of him leaving next summer for nothing.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

At that point, negotiations are taken out of Spurs’ hands and he could go wherever he fancied; that could be Roma, it could also be a club like Arsenal.

Spurs do not have a lot of time to make a decision, with the English transfer window closing next week.

That is precious little time to buy a replacement if Alderweireld does leave – a conclusion will have to be reached soon.

Everton target Mario Lemina has received glowing endorsements

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Expert Roundup feature, which provides three quotes from those in the know in order to illuminate fundamental strengths, weaknesses, quirks, stylistic comparisons and general observations of players, transfer targets and confirmed signings.

Everton have parted ways with midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who’s left the Toffees for Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth around £30m.

Marco Silva’s side resisted the advances of PSG in January for one of their star players but the French side eventually landed their target.

Everton will presumably now enter the market for a new midfielder to replace Gueye and it seems Mario Lemina has been identified as an option for the Toffees midfield.

The Liverpool Echo are reporting that a deal to bring Lemina to the club is being explored and that Southampton want £20m for the midfielder they signed from Juventus for £18.1m.

So with the transfer being a possibility, what have those in the know had to say about Lemina?

Matt Le Tissier – Southampton icon

You know you’re impressing Southampton supporters if you’re earning praise from Matt Le Tissier, the man who enjoyed 16 wonderful years with the Saints.

Lemina made a bright start to life in England, and the former midfielder highlighted exactly what he was doing so well during the early stage of his spell:

“It was quite a big fee for us to pay but it has been a good start for him. He was outstanding in the win against Crystal Palace and quality against Manchester United too.

“If he keeps putting in performances like that against the top sides then no doubt Liverpool will come calling! He has not got a great goal scoring record and I do not see him as somebody who is going to get us the eight or nine goals we need from midfield, but he is good at breaking up play and picking a pass.

“He is forming a very solid partnership with Oriol Romeu and if we want to keep moving forward, these are the sort of players that we need.”

Wayne Bridge – former Premier League player

Wayne Bridge is another player, like many after him, to have come through the famous Southampton academy, and he went on to enjoy a decent career, earning moves to the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.

Having kept an eye on his former club, the former left-back spoke in glowing terms of the Saints midfielder.

“Lemina is such a great player: his workrate, the way he gets up and down the pitch.

“He passes forward a lot. Southampton aren’t doing as well as they should be in terms of scoring goals but his all-round play is great and if he can control the game from the middle of the park they’ll have a great chance.”

Marcelo Bielsa – Leeds United manager

Marcelo Bielsa worked with Lemina at Marseille, and the Leeds United boss had some encouraging words to say about the versatile midfielder, who played 25 times under the Argentine.

“He is a different type of player to the majority of footballers. He knows how to attack and how to defend. He offers a lot of solutions to the coach and to his team.”

Verdict

Lemina isn’t a like-for-like with Gueye, but he’d provide a lot of the same qualities and natural instincts that the new PSG man was renowned for.

If signed, he would be a very welcome addition to the Everton squad.

Luton Town: Target Jordan Willis seems to make decision

With a season back in the Championship just over a month away, Luton Town are seemingly yet to click into gear when it comes to buying players.

With Callum McManaman from Wigan Athletic the Hatters’ only signing this summer, the biggest story surrounding the club seems to be negotiating a deal for James Justin with Leicester City, who the Telegraph report is on the verge of joining the 2015/16 Premier League winners for a reported £6 million.

Of course, we are only in the opening stages of the transfer market, but with teams in the Championship already actively signing players, with Stoke City signing five on one day, Luton may face being behind other sides when it comes to summer arrivals, though that could all change very soon.

The Coventry Telegraph report that Coventry City defender Jordan Willis is all but certain to leave the club this summer as the 24-year-old Luton target failed to turn up for the start of pre-season training with the Sky Blues, and with other sides interested in the experienced defender, the Hatters can make a big statement by signing the centre-back.

Although Willis is just 24, the former Coventry skipper has been an established member of the League One side since the 2013/14 season, EFL Trophy in 2017 and to promotion from League Two to the third-tier a year later, scoring in the play-off final against Exeter City in a 3-1 win.

Jones has previously spoken to Luton Today about how the player caught his eye while watching the Sky Blues on TV, so capturing him while more established second-tier clubs such as Bristol City are linked (per the Coventry Telegraph too) would be somewhat of a coup for a newly-promoted side.

Luton fans, would Willis be a good signing this summer? Let us know!

Arsenal fans frustrated as reports claim club will miss out on Markus Schubert signing

[ad_pod ]

Having seen Petr Cech retire at the end of the campaign and with David Ospina set to join Napoli, Arsenal only really have Bernd Leno and the returning Emiliano Martinez as their frontline goalkeepers.

Unai Emery’s side will be playing Europa League football once more next season and that will surely mean the side’s number two shot-stopper will get some very decent playing time.

Reports in recent weeks had suggested the Gunners had targeted Dynamo Dresden’s highly-rated star Markus Schubert to come in on a free transfer, but an update from German publication Bild now claims the goalkeeper will join Bundesliga side Schalke instead.

After hearing the news that the 21-year-old had potentially snubbed the north London side at the last moment, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to voice their frustrations.

Many thought it was typical of the state of the club that even players on a free transfer were turning them down and simply admitted that this was just going to be another ‘near miss’.

Some even expressed their concern that having seen a month go by without the club making any significant moves in the transfer market, they were worried that it might be indicative of the whole summer and that they would struggle to get anyone in.

Check out some of the disappointed reaction of Arsenal fans below:

Tottenham fans reject summer swoop for PSG ace Kurzawa

[ad_pod ]

According to France Football, via Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur are considering a summer swoop for Paris Saint-Germain defender Layvin Kurzawa.

The 26-year-old only made 21 appearances for PSG during the 2018-19 campaign.

His contract in Paris will expire next summer, meanwhile, and according to France Football, via Sport Witness, Tottenham are amongst the clubs showing an interest.

Danny Rose recently admitted that he was unsure of his future at Spurs, which could force the London club into the transfer market for a new left-back.

Kurzawa struggled for appearances last season although it is certainly worth mentioning that he missed a long spell due to a herniated disc.

Watch the best UCL final reactions from Liverpool and Spurs fans (and their enemies) in the video below…

In all, the Frenchman has made 100 appearances for PSG since arriving from Monaco in 2015.

The Tottenham fans have been on social media reacting to the transfer speculation and it seems that the majority are not interested in a move for the 13-time France international.
