O’Keeffe names three players who have little future at Everton

The arrival of a new manager often leads to a squad revamp and Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment at Everton is unlikely to be an exception to the rule.

And, according to The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe, three senior players are unlikely to have futures at the club.

What’s the word?

While writing in a Q&A on The Athletic on Monday, O’Keeffe debated Everton’s best and worst signings with supporters, but he was also asked about what the future may hold for a handful of individuals.

Indeed, one supporter asked the journalist if he believes any players have little future at Goodison Park, and he offered a frank response.

“Sigurdsson, Schneiderlin and Sidibe for me.”

Rebuild for the future

Sigurdsson, Schneiderlin and Sidibe, who are valued at £25.2m, £10.8m and £10.8m by Transfermarkt respectively, have struggled to impress this season and it seems the writing could be on the wall.

Sigurdsson’s form has nosedived this season following a decent 2018/19 campaign, while Schneiderlin has been painfully mediocre since swapping Manchester for Merseyside in 2017.

Sidibe’s situation is distinct given he is currently on loan from Monaco. Despite the fact he’s provided four assists this season, question marks remain over his defensive ability and it’s little surprise O’Keeffe is struggling to envisage a permanent deal being struck.

Under Ancelotti’s tutelage the club have an opportunity to rebuild for the future, and offloading Sigurdsson and Schneiderlin represents a wise place to start in that regard.

John Percy says Aston Villa are not in the hunt for Krzysztof Piatek

AC Milan forward Krzysztof Piatek is not a target for Aston Villa during this month’s transfer window, according to The Daily Telegraph reporter John Percy.Sky in Italy had claimed that the 24-year-old was being considered by Villa, who have lost Wesley for the remainder of the season with a knee problem. However, Percy has insisted that the striker is not a target for Dean Smith’s side.

Piatek enjoyed a stunning first half of the 2018/19 campaign, scoring 19 goals in 21 appearances for Genoa to earn a move to Milan.

The Poland international has found it difficult to show his best form for the San Siro giants this term, though, finding the back of the net on just four occasions in 18 Serie A appearances.

Red Herring or Real Hero: Only hardcore Villa fans will get all of them right….

Newcastle United have also been linked with Piatek, whilst another report has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur are in the race.

However, despite the speculation surrounding Villa, Smith’s side are not in the argument, according to Percy, whose post on social media can be seen below:

Meanwhile, a number of Villa fans have been reacting to their club being linked with another striker during this month’s window.

HYS: Who should replace Joe Gomez for Liverpool?

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool are set to be without Joe Gomez for around six weeks, so who should partner Virgil van Dijk in defence?

Liverpool suffered a huge setback this week, as the hard-fought win at Burnley was overshadowed by an injury to Gomez.

The Reds’ star student went down under a tough tackle from Ben Mee, and the club have confirmed he will miss the busy Christmas period with a fractured leg.

Playmaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he often received racist abuse after North London Derbies – Check out the video below…

The 21 year-old has been sensational so far this season, and this is the absolute worst time of the season to lose key players, but Jurgen Klopp does have two experienced internationals waiting in the wings.

Dejan Lovren certainly has mistakes in him, but the World Cup finalist has been slowly improving since the arrival of Klopp.

He has taken loads of stick from both Liverpool fans and rivals since his move to Merseyside, but had his best spell of form in a red shirt towards the end of last season.

Then there is Joel Matip, who partnered van Dijk during Wednesday’s win at Burnley.

Matip is fantastic in the air, but he has yet to prove he can perform consistently in the Premier League, and Lovren’s experience should make him the clear choice for Klopp.

So, Liverpool fans, which player would you rather see take Gomez’s place? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…

Swansea fans on Twitter can’t believe Renato Sanches scored in the Champions League

[ad_pod ]

Swansea fans on Twitter couldn’t quite believe what happened in the Champions League on Wednesday night, as Renato Sanches scored for Bayern Munich on his return to the club after a torrid loan spell at the Liberty Stadium last season.

The now 21-year-old spent last season in Wales thanks to then boss Paul Clement’s links with Bayern and their manager at the time Carlo Ancelotti. The deal originally looked like a huge coup for the Swans as Sanches had played 25 times for the German giants the season before and was a part of Portugal’s Euro 2016-winning squad.

His time in the Premier League was incredibly disappointing though and he will be remembered mainly by Swansea fans for his pass to the advertising boards at Stamford Bridge rather than anything worthwhile.

Now though Sanches is back with Bayern and he made his first appearance against his former club Benfica in a 2-0 Champions League win. The youngster’s goal came after he produced an impressive driving run from his own half and carried on into the box to get on the end of a James Rodriguez cross.

Check out some of the best reactions from Swansea fans to Sanches’ goal below.

Newcastle fans want Rob Elliot to start in goal against Arsenal

An out of form Newcastle United face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, and Magpies fans are all saying the same thing about goalkeeper Rob Elliot.

Rafa Benitez’s men come into the clash in north London having lost seven of their last eight Premier League matches, and they now lie just two places and one point above the relegation zone.

Elliot started the season as Benitez’s first-choice stopper, but he was relegated to the substitutes’ bench following the 3-0 defeat against Watford at St James’ Park, with Karl Darlow preferred between the sticks since then.

However, the former Nottingham Forest keeper has also failed to impress and particularly should have done better during the 3-2 loss at home to Leicester City last weekend.

Newcastle supporters have been quick to have their say on goalkeeping conundrum via social media, and they want Elliot reclaim his spot at the Emirates.

While one said he “rarely puts a foot wrong”, another said “I’d have Elliot back in today”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Dominic Solanke: A modern day footballer perfect for Liverpool’s front three

It’s been an interesting few weeks in the life of Dominic Solanke. Rumours of a summer switch to Liverpool were reported as virtual fact at the end of May and the prodigious forward did his growing reputation no harm last night as he netted the only goal in England’s U20 World Cup quarter-final win over Mexico; a goal that required cute movement, a delicate first touch and a low finish – not to mention a cool head – to take the Junior Lions through to the next round.

Liverpool fans will no doubt be impressed, but we’ve been here before with young English players. Sensationally overhyped, sensationally overpaid, eventually amounting to incredibly little. So, what makes Solanke so different and why are Liverpool so keen to sign him? Let’s take a look.

The first thing that stands out about the 19-year-old is his physique, very much in line with the modern Premier League trend. He’s powerful and offers a bit of height at 6 foot 1, but it’s the combination of almost oxymoronic gangling limbs and jinking fluidity that makes him comparable to the likes of Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba – players who have that perfect mix between power and agility.

It’s very much what a modern Premier League footballer should look like, able to not only impose himself on defenders but also prance away from them. In terms of roles, it also makes him a bit of an all-rounder.

A prolific scoring record at youth level is perhaps what Solanke’s best famed for, netting 35 times in 45 appearances for Chelsea in Premier League 2, the UEFA Youth League and the FA Youth Cup and 25 in 51 for the Junior Lions across the age groups. In the process, he’s fired club and country to a succession of honours, not least including the UEFA Youth League title and the U17 European Championship, and himself to individual accolades.

But goals aren’t always as easy to come by when stepping up to senior level and that may well be the case with Solanke. He’s not the most natural of finishers – although he’s nothing short of clinical from the penalty spot – and Chelsea are so dominant at that level we perhaps shouldn’t expect Solanke’s scoring record to be anything less than what it is. Tellingly, he could only muster up eight Eredivisie goals on loan at Vitesse Arnhem last season. Compare that to Tammy Abraham, for example, who netted 23 times in the Championship this campaign.

In truth, the idea of him being an out-and-out goalscorer is a little wide of the mark, but that’s not necessarily bad news for Liverpool fans because Solanke is a very complete kind of forward. He can play on either wing, as an out-and-out striker or a No.10 which, in theory, makes him an ideal candidate for Jurgen Klopp’s nomadic and versatile front-three.

He’s not simply filling voids either, in the way goal-shy strikers are pushed out wide to try and find some new use for them; rather than goalscoring, Solanke’s best assets are probably his unorthodox dribbling and vision, which both lend to deeper or wider roles.

He actually operated as a No.10 in England’s win over Mexico, threading through passes to the forward line and using his movement to sneak into space between the two centre-backs before slotting past the goalkeeper, and some of the chances he created at Vitesse last season required real inventiveness in terms of both technique and vision.

Solanke’s dribbling style in particular will divide opinion. At first glance, it looks clumsy and unconvincing. But former Chelsea striker Tore Andre Flo sums it up perfectly; even if the Englishman seems to momentarily lose the ball, he has a curious knack of using his pace, power and touch to recover it, usually on the other side of the defender he’s attempted to jink past.

“He’s got a very good physique and I think he’s got great touch on the ball. He’s quick but often what impresses me the most is when he looks like he’s lost the ball, he somehow manages to get out with the ball, no matter how tight the situation is or how difficult it looks.”

Perhaps the biggest challenge Solanke will face at Liverpool is acclimatising to Klopp’s high-pressing game. To say he’s a lazy player would be unjustified, but like most young forwards, he’s more concerned with finding space and what he does when receiving the ball than trying to impose himself on the opposition and protect the midfield. As we’ve seen from Daniel Sturridge, that style of play isn’t for every attacking player.

Nonetheless, the teenager will already be more than aware of that and as most managers will tell you, the greatest gifts of young players are their fearlessness, their natural energy and the speed in which they can adapt. Likewise, you have to commend Solanke’s bravery; he could have stayed at Chelsea, picking up silly money whilst showing brief glimpses of his potential in loan spells elsewhere. Instead, he’s joined a club with a policy of not forking out large salaries for young players, opting to work under a manager who famously demands every ounce of energy from his team but especially the front line.

It’s unquestionably a bold move – one that highlights Solanke’s determination to succeed.

Man City’s turnaround vs. Arsenal sends Twitter wild

Well, well well… who saw that coming? Certainly not us.

A stunning second half performance by Pep Guardiola’s City side has given them a huge 2-1 victory over Arsenal, moving into second place in the Premier League table.

Their fans may have hated the team selection, they may have been dismayed by the first half but Man City have proved they have the team spirit required to pull massive results out of the bag from the brink of defeat.

Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sane both produced sensational attacking displays alongside match-winner Raheem Sterling.

It was Sane who latched onto David Silva’s inch perfect pass to get the Citizens level before Sterling showed his tremendous skill and finishing ability to fire the second past a helpless Petr Cech, assisted by De Bruyne.

The performance of Sane was a particular surprise given that he hadn’t scored a single goal so far this season, with fans sometimes questioning the decision to bring him to Manchester in the summer.

Those questions were answered today and Pep Guardiola must be delighted that some of his doubters have been proved wrong.

For Man City fans all that matters is the result that has closed the gap on Chelsea to 7 points…

The long-term Tottenham first-teamer that needs to be dropped

Tottenham’s start to the new season has been less than convincing, with the North London club only picking up two points from their first three Premier League games.

Although there have been some positive spells in all three of the team’s games against Manchester United, Stoke and Leicester, a lack of consistency has been a key issue for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

Ahead of this weekend’s clash with Everton, the Argentine trainer has a number of selection dilemmas to make in the team’s bid to record their first win of the season.

Although a host of the side’s established players have under-performed to date, one man’s performances have been treated with particular scrutiny.

Kyle Walker has started the new season slowly and a section of the White Hart Lane faithful have been highly critical of the right-back for some time now.

[ffc-gal cat=”tottenham” no=”5″]

A proven England international and member of the Spurs starting XI for a number of seasons, the former Sheffield United right-back was at a time adjudged as one of the best in his position in the Premier League.

Walker’s turn of pace and willingness to get forward have been assets that have caught the eye when he has been at his best, but in recent weeks it appears that the defender has lost a lot of confidence.

The 25-year-old’s performances last season were also not at a level that the Spurs faithful have come to expect from him, with the defender missing a prolonged period of the campaign through injury, and then struggling to find his best form upon his return.

This season Walker has struggled to contain opposition wingers in a number of fixtures and has appeared to be a weak link in the Tottenham rearguard.

His positional play has always been something that Spurs fans have questioned, with the Englishman relying on his pace to salvage situations over the years.

On the front foot Walker has been an asset for the North London outfit in the past and has shown that he can be an attacking outlet for a team that at times has lacked width.

However, this season the Sheffield-born defender has looked shaky in possession and has been guilty of giving the ball away far too many times.

His final ball has always been an area that looks like it needs improving; this season the fact that Walker is not getting into promising positions at all is a concern.

The issue that Spurs have had over recent years has been a lack of viable competition for the defender in their squad, although this has changed over the last six months.

The addition of Kieran Trippier from Burnley and the acquisition of highly rated DeAndre Yedlin mean that should Pochettino want to take Walker out of the firing line he has others that can step into the breach.

Although Yedlin is still very raw and is most likely to spend the campaign out on loan if an appropriate suitor can be found, Tripper is ready to play if called upon.

An impressive performer in a Turf Moor outfit that impressed and showed no shortage of effort last season despite relegation, Trippier has a season of Premier League experience and has shown that he can compete in the top flight.

Dropping Walker may well help to refocus the England international, while Trippier’s introduction does not represent a weakening of the side at this time.

Man City player ratings vs Luton: The Kevin De Bruyne-Erling Haaland connection reaches a whole new level! Devastating duo combine for FOUR goals in FA Cup rout

The duo were in an utterly devastating mood and fired City to an emphatic victory at Kenilworth Road

It is no secret that Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland have a wonderful understanding on the pitch but they took their special relationship to obscene levels against Luton, combining for four goals as Manchester City blitzed the Hatters 6-2 to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals in style.

De Bruyne set up Haaland to score twice within the opening 18 minutes and the pair combined again in the 40th for the Norwegian's eighth hat-trick for City but his first away from home. Luton came alive either side of half-time to make it 3-2 with two thumping strikes from Jordan Clark. Incidentally, Clark was fed on both occasions by Ross Barkley.

De Bruyne set Haaland up for a fourth goal soon after though to reassert City's control on the game and the Norwegian then bagged his fifth, helped this time by Bernardo Silva. Mateo Kovacic completed the rout with a ferocious hit from outside the area, continuing the theme of stunning goals. The only negative note was Jack Grealish getting injured once more, almost certainly ruling him out of the Manchester derby.

The best Premier League fantasy football midfielders for 2023-24

Prolific wide-forwards, and creative midfielders who love a late run into the box are the order of the day in terms of savvy FPL picks.

Wondering who could the best Fantasy Premier League midfield picks for 2023-24? (including summer transfers) You've come to the right place.

Midfielders are more likely to get goals and assists and earn an extra point for a goal compared to forwards, plus the extra point for keeping a clean sheet. They are also highly likely to be 'captainable' options than players in other positions.

Explosive wingers who cut inside are constantly in demand, as are playmakers who can not only get assists but earn a goal themselves with late runs into the box. There are some great value midfield options from every price point: budget enablers, mid-priced picks, and premium options.

With the game now open for another season, GOAL has a list of the top midfielders to help you pick the strongest and most productive possible squad.

    Mohamed Salah | Liverpool | £12.5m

Liverpool's Egyptian king Mohamed Salah(239 points in 2022/23) was the highest-scoring midfielder on FPL once again last season after coming out on top of the list and will be eager to defend his 'midfield' crown.

Despite the Reds underperformance last season, Salah posted incredible numbers with 19 goals and 12 assists in the Premier League, and there's no reason why he can't repeat the same feat in the new season.

Liverpool are one of the best-attacking teams in the league and have been for a good few years. The Reds have also bolstered their midfield ranks with the exciting additions of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, couple this with the fact that Trent Alexander-Arnold will be playing more as a playmaker next term, Salah's potential for both scoring and setting up goals will be as high as ever in 2023-24.

Kevin De Bruyne | Manchester City | £10.5m

Kevin De Bruyne was once again the king of assists last season, mostly sent in the direction of Erling Haaland. 16 in the Premier League, six in the Champions League, and four in the FA Cup.

With 10 goals and a mind-boggling 31 assists to his name in all competitions last season, the Belgium playmaker was the driving force behind City's treble despite making a slow start.

Although he is still recovering from that hamstring tear, and this may impact the start of the 2023-24 campaign, he has come back strongly from injuries before and is still at the top of his game in a very dominant City team, so we should expect similar numbers from him as last term.

  • Getty Images

    Marcus Rashford | Manchester United | £9.0m

Last season, Marcus Rashford rediscovered his scoring boots as he spent plenty of time up top, recurring injuries to Anthony Martial, the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and some not-so-prolific displays from Wout Weghorst seeing Erik ten Hag turn to the 25-year-old to spearhead the Manchester United attack on several occasions.

Only five players scored more Premier League goals than Rashford last season, with the England international finding the net 17 times and hitting a double-century for FPL points for the first time. Indeed, this sort of goalscoring exploits have led to a steep price rise from starting last season at £6.5m to £9m.

Still not reclassified as a forward, and United are unlikely to buy an elite striker due to FFP issues this summer, Rashford will surely have plenty of opportunities to reach the same heights in the upcoming campaign.

  • Son Heung-Min | Tottenham Hotspur | £9.0m

Following a 23-goal season in which he shared the Golden Boot with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, Son began 2022/23 with his highest-ever opening price of £12.0m. However, the South Korean produced only 10 goals, six assists and 152 points.

The plummet in Son's price is therefore understandable, but the arrival of former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou – who is expected to deploy an expansive 4-3-3 system– and the addition of creative midfielders James Maddison may make him too appealing to pass up, especially with teammate Harry Kane's price climbing to £12.5 million.

If Son can get back to his best under Postecoglou, he will offer incredible value across the season.
