Final run feast on flat surface

India A’s batsmen have faltered twice in chases against Australia A in a series full of huge totals. Will it be any different in the final?

Big Picture It looked an excellent plan on paper. Send your fringe players, and a few first-choice batsmen, to South Africa on an A tour three months before the senior side travels to the country. Ideally, far better preparation than any camp in home conditions would have been. The main course – the two unofficial Tests – are yet to arrive, but going by what has happened in the one-day tri-series, India A haven’t missed home much. The pitch at the LC de Villiers Oval in Pretoria has been so flat the South Africa A captain Justin Ontong has been left hoping for some grass on the wickets for the unofficial Tests. Given that one of them will be played on the same ground, Ontong might as well put in a prayer along with hoping.India A have not experienced what the senior team management might have wanted them to, but they have done what they usually do on such pitches back home. The batsmen have prospered, the bowlers have suffered. In their defence, the other sides have fared similarly.Barring the opening match, the side batting first has scored big and won, although the biggest margin has been only 39 runs. India A have made 291 and 285 and still lost, both times to Australia A. They have also shown off their batting firepower as they often do in one-dayers in benign conditions, plundering 309 in 38 overs against South Africa A. Shikhar Dhawan’s astonishing 248 helped them to 433 against the same opposition. However, it is Australia A, and not the hosts, who await India A in the final. They are the only side to chase successfully in this series. They then went ahead and defended successfully from a seemingly lost cause as India A choked.Just like their opponents in the final, Australia A have several international players, who will be eyeing selection for the limited-overs leg of the senior side’s dismal England tour. “Hopefully some of the performances coming off the back of this tour have got some guys in there,” Aaron Finch, the Australia A captain, said. “Some of the guys definitely have their fingers crossed.” Unlike India A, they can claim their workout in South Africa has been ideal, and timely. In the spotlightSuresh Raina has been India A’s most economical bowler. While all the batsmen are internationals, India A have come with an inexperienced bowling attack. The spinners are yet to play for the senior side, as are two of the fast bowlers. Mohammed Shami and Jaydev Unadkat are raw in international cricket. All of them have been expensive, but Ishwar Pandey came in for praise from the coach Lalchand Rajput in his only match of the series. Rajput said Pandey came back strongly after an expensive opening spell against South Africa A to bowl several yorkers at the death and pick up four wickets. India A will need plenty more of them.Glenn Maxwell has taken a liking to the Indians this series. He savaged them for an unbeaten 145 off 79 at No. 7 to launch Australia A from 152 for 8 to 298 for 8. That earned him a promotion to No. 4, from where he hit 93 off 56. What does he have in store for India A in the final?Quotes”There has been a run fest for the batters on this pitch and a hard time for the medium-pacers. We have a team of pretty aggressive players and we’re all very experienced in one-day cricket, we’re very confident of our abilities and it’s been good that we haven’t quite played our best cricket and yet we’ve won three matches so far.”

Injured Irfan Pathan out of tri-series

India allrounder Irfan Pathan has been ruled out of the upcoming tri-series in the West Indies due to a hamstring injury

India allrounder Irfan Pathan has been ruled out of the upcoming tri-series in the West Indies due to a hamstring injury. He has been replaced by the right-arm seamer Shami Ahmed, who has already played five ODIs.Irfan was part of the Champions Trophy squad but did not get a game. He bowled in the warm-up match against Sri Lanka and finished with expensive figures of 0 for 45 from five overs. Irfan last played for India during the limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka in 2012 but another hamstring injury cut short his Ranji Trophy season.Shami, who represents Bengal, made his debut when Pakistan toured India for a limited-overs series in January. Shami’s inclusion is the only change to the squad, which otherwise has the same set of players who were picked for the Champions Trophy.”It is nice to be called back into the squad,” Shami told ESPNcricinfo from Kolkata hours before leaving for Jamaica, where India will open their campaign on June 30 against the hosts. “I think I fared pretty well against Pakistan and England (earlier this year) and had received encouraging feedback from my team-mates and coaching staff.”Shami made his international debut in a low-scoring ODI against Pakistan in Delhi in January. He returned with an impressive haul of 1 for 23 off nine overs, becoming the first Indian bowler to bowl four or more maiden overs on debut. The right-arm seamer, who relies more on line and length, then featured in four ODIs against England, taking three wickets. However, Shami was benched for most of the IPL, playing only three games for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Apart from the disappointment of being left out for the Champions Trophy, what hurt Shami more was the lack of faith shown on him by his franchise, having worked “really hard” and was “bowling very well” going into the IPL.”No doubt it was upsetting. But then I realised, the more you sulk, the more it hurts, so I stopped thinking about it,” Shami said. “Instead I started focusing on keeping myself fit and striving to improve in the nets and the results are there to see.”Shami had a good tour of the West Indies with the A team last year, picking up 13 wickets in three four-day matches. With India sticking to their winning combination throughout their victorious campaign in England, Shami realises that he may not get an opportunity in the tri-series unless the team management decides to rest one of the three main seamers.”All that would be in my hands is to be prepared, if and when I am asked to contribute and I am ready for that,” Shami said. “Last year’s tour to the West Indies was a memorable one for me. Let’s hope this year turns out to be no different.”

Rohit Sharma backs Dhawal Kulkarni after victory over Kings XI

Dhawal Kulkarni’s last over against Kings XI Punjab may have drawn criticism from many quarters but the pace bowler has the firm backing of his Mumbai Indians captain, Rohit Sharma

Amol Karhadkar01-May-2013Dhawal Kulkarni found himself in a strange place on Monday night. Against Kings XI Punjab on Monday, with 17 needed to win, the Mumbai Indians bowler conceded 12 runs in an eight-ball final over, which included a wide and a no-ball. Two nights before the match against Kings XI, Kulkarni had bowled a match-winning, three-wicket spell at the same venue, with the wickets of Tillekaratne Dilshan, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers to his name, but the manner in which he bowled the final over against Kings XI turned from a hero to its antithesis.Six deliveries in the eight-ball over – and what should have been a nine-ball over when square-leg umpire Asad Rauf failed to notice a full toss above waist height – were full tosses. Such was the angst against Kulkarni that a reporter asked Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma how “Dhawal Kulkarni did everything he could to lose the match”. But Rohit stood firmly behind his team-mate.”Dew takes a lot of things out of equation,” Rohit said. “Spinners find it very hard to turn the ball. Bowlers, in general, find it difficult to grip the ball. As far as Dhawal is concerned, you can’t be so aggressive. It’s just that anybody can have a bad game. You see the way he bowled in the last game. As I said, it’s not easy with the dew. You’ve got to give him some time.”This was just his second game and he came and bowled pretty well, I would say. It’s not easy to come and bowl the last over with that wet ball. I think he did a pretty good job.”Kulkarni is one of the shadow men, who belongs to a list of premier domestic pace bowlers who do not come into the frame for India selection. Though Pankaj Singh tops that list, Kulkarni is not far behind. Those on Kulkarni’s side say that his number of five-wicket hauls – 11, to be precise – is almost as much as the number of first-class games played by some of the reputed bowlers. Yet after being on the tour with the Indian team to New Zealand in 2009, Kulkarni has stayed in the wilderness and is yet to be offered a central contract. One of Kulkarni’s main drawbacks, after returning from the tour in New Zealand in 2009, was said to be lack of genuine pace. Over the last four years, though, he has improved on his physique and fitness and it has reflected on his pace as well. “He’s an absolute gym man,” Rohit said. “He likes to work out, he likes to be fit. I know that he bowled [at] about 140[kph], so it shows that he has been really working hard.”Captain of the Mumbai Indians for the last three matches, Rohit reiterated that Kulkarni’s performance in his two IPL matches so matches had been remarkable for a player who had spent a month on the bench.”It’s very tough for any player, not just Dhawal,” he said. ” [The poor guy was benched for the last six-seven games]. Yet, he bowled a match-winning spell in the last game. On Monday, he defended 17 runs under pressure in the last over.””It’s not easy for a guy sitting out to come in with all of us expecting a huge performance from him. Still, I think he showed a lot of maturity. Having played together for many years now, we both understand each other well and it helps both of us,” Rohit said.

Edwards 'heartbroken' by World Cup exit

When it started on Wednesday afternoon, the final Super Six match of the Women’s World Cup looked set to decide which of England or New Zealand, the 2009 finalists, would face Australia in Sunday’s final. The third contenders, West Indies, had been bowled out for 164 in a morning start and surely Australia would chase that down. Which is why Charlotte Edwards, in the midst of providing her side a solid base, didn’t believe a New Zealand fielder who told her that Australia had in fact fallen short. It was only when her partner Sarah Taylor walked up to Edwards and broke the news that the England captain realise that her side’s tournament was all but over. For those watching the match, the excitement had drained as soon as online updates showed Australia had been bowled out for 156. But Edwards had to swallow her disappointment and get on with the game in the middle. She went on to score a vital half-century.”I looked at the big screen to see the result,” Edwards said. “I didn’t actually take in what the information was telling me. I assumed Australia had won the game because when I went out to bat they were going pretty well. [I was] pretty heartbroken really. For three overs after that I didn’t know what was going on. It was disappointing for both teams. It was kind of an anti-climax. I’m very proud of how both teams stuck to it out there.”New Zealand captain, Suzie Bates, also spoke of how the sides had played a competitive game but said intensity levels weren’t the same after the dispiriting news came in. Bates felt it would have been better to have not known the result of the other match. It was a particularly shattering end for the holders England, who went out of the tournament without having had a single really poor game. Their defeats to Sri Lanka and Australia were by one wicket – off the last ball – and two runs. Edwards, however, refused to offer any excuses and said England had paid for their “slow start” to the tournament, beginning with the shock loss to Sri Lanka.”We had come here to win this tournament and we haven’t. We haven’t even got to the final,” Edwards said. “That is disappointing for us as a group of players. We were very inconsistent in the first phase of the tournament and are probably now playing our best cricket, which is too late. We prepared well. We have no excuses. We didn’t play well. We didn’t hold our catches against Sri Lanka.”Edwards said there would be time for reflection on England’s performance in this tournament, and also over a “disappointing” previous 18 months, after they return home but ruled out any immediate decision over her own future. The 33-year-old Edwards, who is now in the 17th year of her international career, said she hadn’t even thought about retirement.”That is a long way off. I am not going to make any rash decisions,” she said. “I am going to enjoy my cricket. I am loving my time with this group. We have got a big summer. There is a World Twenty20 next year. I can’t say if I am going to be there in four years’ time [at the next World Cup] but the only thing that will keep me going is that it might be in England. But four years is a long time.”

Batsmen Anamul Haque and Mominul Haque, who also debuted during this tour, have made the squad too.The fourth among Bangladesh’s debutants, Abul Hasan, who scored a century from No. 10 in the Khulna Test, is the only newcomer to miss out: he is yet to recover from the side strain he suffered in the second ODI in Khulna. The injured Shakib Al Hasan, who was advised six weeks rest due to a shin injury, expectedly wasn’t picked.Batsmen Mohammad Ashraful and Junaid Siddique, and allrounder Farhad Reza, who were part of the squad that played the World Twenty20, were not named in this squad. This year, Bangladesh played their most Twenty20s, winning four out of eight games. The match against West Indies is set to be played in Mirpur on December 10.

Ojha undergoes scan after injury

Pragyan Ojha, the India left-arm spinner, has had a precautionary scan after hurting his neck during batting practice at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Ojha was hit while trying to pull a ball during throwdowns in the indoor nets at the ground. The extent of the injury was unclear but it is understood to not be serious. Ojha seemed to be in some pain as he walked out of the indoor facility feeling his neck.Ojha has two days to recover ahead of the third ODI against Sri Lanka on Saturday. He played as the second spinner alongside R Ashwin in the first two games of the series in Hambantota, taking a combined 1 for 51 in 6.5 overs. Legspinner Rahul Sharma is the third specialist spinner in the India squad. The five-ODI series is level at 1-1 after India won the first game in Hambantota and Sri Lanka won the second.

Dockrell spins Somerset to victory

George Dockrell claimed his second six-wicket haul at Taunton this season to bowl Somerset to an unlikely three-day win over Durham

George Dockrell claimed his second six-wicket haul at Taunton this season to bowl Somerset to an unlikely three-day County Championship win over Durham.Dockrell, the 19-year-old Irish left-arm spinner, took 6 for 29 as the visitors were shot out for 167 in their second innings, having conceded a first-innings deficit of 16. Set 152 to win, Somerset were 17 for 2 at one point. But Arul Suppiah (73) and James Hildreth (31) eased any nerves with a third-wicket stand of 83 as the hosts romped home by five wickets. The day began with Somerset 357 for 8 in their first innings. Peter Trego extended his overnight score of 67 to 89 with some meaty blows before losing his middle stump to Jamie Harrison, who claimed 4 for 112 on his Championship debut.Dockrell and Jamie Overton scored the remaining 11 runs for maximum batting points and Hildreth immediately declared, hoping his bowlers could take advantage of some rare cloud cover.Jamie Overton responded by having Michael Di Venuto (26) caught in the slips with the total on 36, but there was no sign of the carnage to come as Durham progressed to 69 for 1.Then three wickets fell without a run added. Mark Stoneman was taken at first slip trying to withdraw the bat from a Craig Overton delivery, Ben Stokes fell to a catch at third slip off the same bowler and Will Smith was snapped up at second slip off Alfonso Thomas.Paul Collingwood and Ian Blackwell looked to be steadying the ship, only for four wickets to tumble with the total on 131, all to Dockrell, bowling from the River End. Blackwell gave a return catch just when threatening to break loose. Phil Mustard was caught at short-leg off bat and pad, Liam Plunkett was well caught above his head by Craig Overton at mid-off and Callum Thorp was taken by Jamie Overton in the covers.Suddenly it was 131 for 8 and Durham led by only 115. Collingwood did his best to lift the total before edging a big shot to Hildreth at slip, giving Dockrell his fifth wicket. He soon made it six by having Harrison caught by Jos Buttler running in from cover, but his figures were not a season’s best. He took 6 for 27 in the opening Championship game against Middlesex. After losing Alex Barrow first ball and Nick Compton for 8, Somerset needed a positive response. Suppiah supplied it, moving to an attractive half-century off 72 balls, with five fours and three sixes, before falling lbw to Smith with only 23 needed.Compton’s dismissal means he still needs 59 for 1,000 first-class runs before the end of May. He will probably have one Championship innings on the first two days at Worcester next week to achieve the milestone.

ICC denies World Cup semi-final investigation

The ICC has dismissed reports stemming from a British newspaper that they are investigating the World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan over fears of match-fixing

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Mar-2012The ICC has dismissed a report in a British newspaper that it is investigating the 2011 World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan over fears of match-fixing.The ran a story which claimed to expose further corruption in cricket, including taped conversations with a Delhi bookmaker. The newspaper reported that the bookmaker alleged the India-Pakistan semi-final in Mohali was fixed, although he offered no evidence to support the claims. However the ICC, which was quoted in support of the original story without specific mention of the semi-final, said there was no evidence to prompt an investigation into the match.”The story carried by the newspaper, in which it has claimed that the ICC is investigating the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 semi-final between India and Pakistan, is baseless and misleading. The ICC has no reason or evidence to require an investigation into this match,” Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, said. “It is indeed sad for spurious claims to be made which only serve to cause doubt on the semi-final.”New Zealand Cricket also came out strongly, rejecting claims in the article made by the bookmaker that some of their players were involved in fixing. “We have complete confidence that the claims made are baseless and have no credibility,” NZC chief executive David White said. The story focussed on the alleged role of Bollywood actresses being used as honey traps for international cricketers, and also included comments from bookmakers about how English domestic cricket is now an easy target. In the past six months, jail sentences were handed out to three Pakistan players – Salman Butt, captain at the time, and two fast bowlers, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif for spot-fixing in 2010; Meryvn Westfield became the first player to receive a custodial sentence for fixing in English county cricket; and, in the High Court in London, Chris Cairns’ libel action against the former IPL commissioner, Lalit Modi, brought allegations about corruption in the now-defunct Indian Cricket League into focus.
