U.S. international Chris Richards gave Crystal Palace a stunning 2-0 lead with a towering header off a perfectly placed Adam Wharton corner in the 21st minute. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as would lose 5-2.

Palace had struck first through Eberechi Eze, who finished off a sharp counter-attack in the eighth minute. But Manchester City responded quickly, cutting into the lead with a goal from outgoing club legend Kevin De Bruyne in the 33rd minute. Just three minutes later, winter signing Omar Marmoush equalized to make it 2-2.

Manchester City would continue their onslaught in the second half as Mateo Kovacic, James McAtee and Nico O'Reilly would all add goals in the final 45 minutes.

Gill, Dhawan and Chahal power India to 3-0 sweep

The batters, led by Gill’s unbeaten 98, fired India to 225 from 36 overs, and West Indies barely got going in the chase

Himanshu Agrawal27-Jul-2022
After tight contests in the first two matches that went down to the final over, India rode on a career-best unbeaten 98 from Shubman Gill to sweep past West Indies in the third ODI and win the series 3-0.There were also strong performances from captain Shikhar Dhawan, who scored 58; Shreyas Iyer, who made 44 off 34 balls; and Yuzvendra Chahal, who took 4 for 17 in just four overs.Frequent rain delays had forced India’s innings to be curtailed to 40 overs, and the visitors were on 225 for 3 in 36 when another interruption left Gill stranded 2 short of his maiden ODI century. The West Indies were set a target of 257 in 35 overs according to the DLS method, and they were never in the chase.Mohammed Siraj struck twice in the second over of the chase, bowling Kyle Mayers with a good length delivery and trapping Shamarh Brooks lbw with one that angled in. Nine deliveries into their innings, West Indies were 0 for 2.Brandon King and Shai Hope brought them back on track with a 47-run stand before Yuzvendra Chahal had Hope stumped for 22. King and his captain Nicholas Pooran began another recovery, but Axar Patel’s arm-ball in the 14th over bowled King for 42.Pooran hit Deepak Hooda’s part-time offspin for a six and a four immediately after, keeping his team afloat as the required rate hovered around eight an over. However, Keacy Carty’s struggle to get going seemed to put pressure back on Pooran, and when Carty finally decided to try something different – skipping down to Shardul Thakur in the 19th over – he bottom edged on to his stumps for 5 off 17 balls.By then, West Indies needed nearly 10 an over, and when Pooran was dismissed for 42 – caught at mid-on off Prasidh Krishna – in the 22nd over, the game was up.West Indies’ struggle for partnerships was in contrast to how India had built their innings, despite being interrupted by the weather. Following stands of 119 and 48 in the first two matches, the openers Dhawan and Gill put on 113 in the third ODI. It was an innings of two halves for India: the first 24 overs produced 115 runs; the next 12 yielded 110.When play resumed after the first rain delay, India had 16 overs remaining, and Gill and Iyer switched gears to accelerate. They came down the pitch to the spinners, attempted reverse sweeps, played aerial pulls and drives, and kept lofting over the in-field.Gill and Iyer added 86 for the second wicket in less than ten overs, making up for the sedate beginning after Dhawan had won the toss. Dhawan was quiet to start the innings, his 58 coming off 74 balls on a slow pitch where he did try attacking, but often failed to time and place the ball.In contrast, India scored 31 runs off the first two overs after the rain break – including four fours and two sixes – but Gill and Iyer’s momentum was soon broken by the rain once again. When play resumed, there was no time to lose, and Iyer swung Hayden Walsh Jr’s second ball over deep square leg for six. He placed the next ball to the backward-point boundary, before Gill ended the over by lofting the spinner over his head for another six.West Indies brought pace from the other end, only for Iyer to hit a four off Jayden Seales and Gill to slam consecutive fours, the first of which was supremely timed past mid-off. Both batters continued finding the boundary against Jason Holder and Akeal Hosein, before Iyer swatted Hosein to long-on for 44 off 34 balls.Gill finished with a run-a-ball 98 after being 51 off 65 balls at one stage, but he could have got to his maiden ODI hundred had he been a bit quicker at the end: he scored only 13 off his last 14 deliveries. In the end, though, he had done enough to win India the match and himself the Player-of-the-Series award.

According to the 22-year-old defender has been on United’s radar for over a year, and club officials remain eager to finalize a deal that meets Everton’s valuation. Branthwaite remains open to the idea of leaving Goodison Park, recognizing that a move to Manchester United would significantly raise his profile.

However, Branthwaite remains determined to play in the Champions League, as he believes competing at the highest level will boost his chances of securing a spot in England’s World Cup squad. This preference could complicate United’s pursuit, as Amorim’s side must win the Europa League to secure Champions League qualification next season as they are unlikely to break into the top-four Premier League spots.

DID YOU KNOW?

Last summer, the Toffees turned down two bids from United with the second one structured as £45m up front with £5m in add-ons. Although Everton are reluctant to sell, financial considerations may force their hand. The club is dealing with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) concerns and could be required to cash in on key assets to balance their books. Moreover, reports indicate that Everton lack the financial resources to offer Branthwaite a new contract, despite his current deal running until 2027.

Despite competition from Tottenham and Everton’s tough negotiating stance, United believe they can eventually reach an agreement. Branthwaite’s potential arrival would be a major boost for United’s defence, particularly as Amorim looks to rebuild the squad ahead of the new season to compete for major honours.

Wolves want in-demand teenage talent and could sign him for just £250,000

Wolves have joined a queue of clubs looking to try and sign a young talent for a bargain fee this summer, it has emerged, as Gary O’Neil looks to strengthen his squad on the cheap.

Wolves target youth

Part of Wolves’ strategy over the summer was to buy younger talents to develop as they look to build a squad capable of avoiding relegation from the Premier League.

In the wake of Pedro Neto’s exit to Chelsea, the Old Gold replaced him with former Manchester City youth talent Carlos Forbs, who turns 21 in March, while the only player over the age of 24 signed was goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who arrived from Crystal Palace.

It has yet to work out for the Molineux side, but their first wins of the season have pulled them clear of the relegation zone as things stand and O’Neil will be hoping that the players he has signed only continue to improve over the course of the season, with money scarce in the Midlands for any January or summer additions and the club looking to follow a self-sustaining model.

That could see players leave once more in the summer, with Matheus Cunha among those linked with a move away from the club, along with fullback Rayan Ait-Nouri.

However, that will not change Wolves’ youth-driven policy, and now they have joined the race to sign a potential bargain.

Wolves interested in signing Celtic talent

That comes according to Football Insider, who name Wolves as one of five sides showing an interest in Celtic forward Daniel Cummings after a series of impressive performances at youth level.

The 18-year-old has managed to find the net 22 times in 20 games for the youth sides this season, including five goals in five Champions League youth games for Celtic, helping the young Bhoys to three wins and leaving them above Real Madrid in the early standings.

But Cummings is out of contract with Celtic as things stand at the end of the campaign, and the reports claims that the teenager “could leave the club for a minimal fee with cross-border compensation only €310,000″ [£250,000], following in the footsteps of the likes of Ben Doak and Rocco Vata”.

It is added that “Wolves, Fulham, Ipswich, Sunderland and Burnley” all had scouts watching him in his most recent UEFA Youth League game, where he scored the only goal of the game as Celtic edged past Club Brugge before the senior team were held to a draw later in the day.

Still yet to make his debut for Brendan Rodgers’ table-topping senior side, several clubs are positioning themselves in the hope that it never happens, while Wolves will be among them, hoping that they can snag the talent on the cheap in several months time should contract talks not reach a resolution.

As Slot sat in the stands serving a suspension, the cameras captured his agitated reaction, with his head in his hands, reflecting his disappointment over the sloppy defensive mix-up between Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker that led to the goal.

Tottenham now ready to offer £25m for "monster" Davies upgrade in January

Tottenham are now reportedly ready to make a splash in the January transfer market as they look to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s options in defence following a tough start to the Premier League season.

Tottenham consistently inconsistent

Heading into the November international break, Tottenham continue to blow hot and cold under Ange Postecoglou. Currently 10th in the Premier League, they have recorded impressive wins over Manchester United and Manchester City (in the Carabao Cup), but have also given first wins of the season to Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town, losing to the Tractor Boys 2-1 at home in their most recent outing.

The upshot of that is that they have lost five of their first 11 games, winning another five and drawing just once, a run of form that leaves them three points outside the top six as things stand.

Spurs join race to sign £30,000-p/w Marmoush teammate Kulusevski knows well

He could be just what Ange Postecoglou’s side need to add to their ranks.

ByBen Browning Nov 11, 2024

As was the case across the 2023/24 campaign, issues in north London are particularly obvious when first choice defenders Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven are sidelined, and Radu Dragusin has not made the desired impact in the 12 months since arriving from Genoa, with the Romanian defender yet to challenge either for a first team spot when everyone is fit.

Elsewhere, Ben Davies continues to flatter to deceive when asked to step into the breach, and with reported interest from Real Madrid in Romero and persistent injuries to Van de Ven, the Spurs defence is facing a pivotal few months. Now, they are ready to bolster it with a new addition in January.

Spurs ready move for "monster" defender

That comes as a report from Italy claims that Spurs are ready to offer up to 30m euros (£25m) for Inter defender Yann Bisseck in January.

The Cameroonian defender has started just four Serie A games this season for the Nerazzurri, but impressed in the Champions League against Arsenal as he helped Simone Inzaghi’s side to a 1-0 win over Tottenham’s north London rivals.

He was hailed as a “monster” by football analyst Pythagoras in Boots on X, who praised his “good athleticism complemented some good positioning” in the victory. Though right-footed, he is comfortable playing on either side of defence as part of either a back three or back four, and is under contract until 2028 at San Siro.

It has been claimed that he is set to sign a one year extension to that deal, but Inter.Live claim that Tottenham are ready to try and lure him out of Milan as soon as January.

It is claimed that Tottenham would be willing to shell out £25m, a fee that would see Inter make a massive profit on the £7m they shelled out to bring Bisseck to Italy.

Should he arrive in north London, Bisseck would be able to provide some much-needed cover and competition for both sides of Postecoglou’s defence, and would also leave Spurs less vulnerable should Real Madrid opt to pursue their early interest in Cristian Romero.

Patterson and Pattinson star as NSW and Victoria play out a rain-affected draw

The Sheffield Shield match between NSW and Victoria at the SCG petered out to a draw despite a captain’s century and final-day declaration from Kurtis Patterson.Patterson celebrated his first hundred of the Shield season then ended the Blues’ second innings at 7 for 285, setting Victoria a target of 248 late in Tuesday’s post-lunch session.Victoria slipped to 3 for 54 when teenage legspinner Tanveer Sangha bowled Matt Short, extending a promising start to his first-class career. But captain Peter Handscomb’s steadying 39 and a determined Jonathan Merlo, who finished 7 not out from 82 balls, ensured their side held on for 43 overs.Victoria originally had approximately 53 overs, weather permitting, to complete the chase. Rain, a near-constant presence in the contest that started a day late because of Will Sutherland’s positive Covid-19 test, returned in the shadows of tea.Handscomb clipped his 73rd delivery straight to Jason Sangha at leg slip, but there was no chaotic collapse under darkening skies. Patterson, who replaced Peter Nevill as NSW captain for 2021-22, started the season with knocks of 48, 4, 2 and 24 during losses to Victoria at the MCG and Drummoyne Oval. The left-hander, who played two Tests in 2019 but was not invited to Australia’s upcoming pre-Ashes boot camp in Queensland, showcased his talent on Tuesday in front of national selector Tony Dodemaide.Patterson eventually fell unselfishly chasing quick runs as he became one of James Pattinson’s five victims in the innings. Pattinson, who last month announced his retirement from international cricket, finished with impressive match figures of 7 for 103.He made up for lost time after the start of Tuesday’s play was briefly delayed because of showers, removing Moises Henriques with the first ball of the day. It proved the only wicket to fall before lunch as Jason Sangha and Patterson shifted momentum in a 151-run stand, withstanding a testing examination from Pattinson.Sangha hammered two sixes off Wil Parker in the 49th over, signalling his team’s intent to try to make a game of the clash. Hayden Kerr and Chris Tremain each cleared the rope before Patterson called the unbeaten batters in, but the hosts failed to conjure 10 wickets.
