'Standout' Dom Sibley has earned Test chance, says old Surrey partner Rory Burns

Rory Burns has only played a dozen Tests but looks set to link-up with his fifth* opening partner later this week in Mount Maunganui. But this time, at least, there will be a familiar face at the other end when he takes strike. While Dominic Sibley may have left Burns’ county, Surrey, a couple of years ago, the pair played a huge amount of cricket together as they were growing up. As well as providing many lifts to training and matches, Burns was also at the other end when Sibley made his Surrey debuts for the first-team and the seconds, as well as his debut in an England shirt last week in Whangarei. (Indeed, it is probably a reflection of England’s reliance upon private schools that three of England’s last four openers – Burns, Sibley and Jason Roy – all attended Whitgift.)ALSO READ: England settle for draw in tour matchAs a result, Burns is well placed to offer a view on Sibley’s capabilities as opener.”I’ve known Sibbo for – we were trying to work it out the other day – since I was 12 or 13,” Burns said. “I don’t really remember him at school because I left Whitgift at 16. But I remember seeing him down at academy stuff, Surrey stuff and he only lives a town down so I gave him a lot of lifts when he was coming through in the second team. I remember driving him to most of those games. I won’t have to drive him to this week: we’ve got the coach”It would be a pretty cool feeling to open with him on his Test debut, too. I’m very proud of him to have got to where he has, particularly having left Surrey and doing what he’s done at Warwickshire. That’s a testament to him as a character.”He showed all his attributes: his determination and his character to bat for days at a time, to put up the weight of runs he did and to bat the number of balls he did in tricky conditions you get in county cricket with a lot of assistance for bowlers a lot of the time. He’s earned his spot.”While Burns is somewhat defensive of Roy’s record – and not just because Roy served as one of his best men only a few weeks ago (Surrey seamer Matt Dunn was the other) – he accepts that Sibley may be more obviously suited to the role of Test opener.”Obviously Jason’s main grounding is white-ball cricket, but his red-ball cricket is very good as well. I don’t think we can judge him on his Test career batting out of position,” Burns said. “But I think him and Sibs’ styles are slightly different. Sibs is more traditional in terms of opening the batting in red-ball cricket because that’s where he’s learned most of his stuff.”His concentration levels and determination to go about that process are his strong points. He likes batting time, he can bat days at a time and he’s willing to grind bowlers down and not necessarily race away at the start of an innings. He’s willing to build an innings and wait for people to come to him and pick them off when he can. Sibbo was the standout batter in the country regardless of position.”Dominic Sibley removes his helmet on reaching three figures•Getty Images

There is little doubt Sibley has earned this opportunity. He not only scored more than 300 more runs than any man in Division One of the Championship in 2019, he faced more than a thousand deliveries more than anyone else in that division. But the New Zealand bowlers will have noted that he was struck on the grille of the helmet by an excellent short ball during the game against the New Zealand A side and flashed at one outside off stump a few minutes later. More short balls are likely. As for Burns, he is probably as established as any England opener since the years of Andrews Strauss and Alastair Cook. He has already achieved something Cook never could – a century in a home Ashes series – while his tally of runs in that series (390) also surpassed anything Cook ever achieved against Australia at home. Bearing in mind how tough opening the batting was in the summer of 2019 – David Warner averaged 9.50, remember – his average of 39.00 was a fine effort. He has also looked an asset in the field, taking some sharp catches in the cordon, and there have been early whispers that he could, one day, emerge as a leadership contender.”You’re never truly settled because there’s always another Test coming,” Burns said. “New Zealand have got a fine bowling attack to try and expose any weaknesses in your game. It’s a summer to build on for me, but at the end of it there were a few scores I left out there. So there’s a lot to keep improving upon.”There sure is. But, in picking two specialist openers to combat the new ball, England are, at last, giving themselves the best opportunity to improve in New Zealand.*Oh, and just in case you are wracking your brain trying to remember Burns’ Test opening partners, they are: Keaton Jennings, Joe Denly, Jack Leach and Roy.

The Hale End sensation who could make Arsenal forget about Ivan Toney

Do Arsenal need a striker? Probably. However, their 6-0 drubbing of West Ham United last Sunday proved that they can indeed score a bucket load of goals without that typical no.9 in their system.

Leandro Trossard was a menace to the Irons backline, scoring the fourth goal after picking up a lovely little pocket of space inside the area.

A week prior Kai Havertz had also flourished in that false 9 role, proving to be a "handful" – in the words of Ray Parlour – to the Liverpool defenders in that 3-1 win at the Emirates.

So, where do the Gunners go from here? Well, after a run of three games around the New Year period where they scored just once across three games, a new forward will likely still arrive in the summer.

Who is that man? Well, there's one name on the lips of plenty at the moment; Ivan Toney.

The latest on Arsenal's hunt for Ivan Toney

With the threat of exceeding financial fair play guidelines in January Arsenal decided against signing anyone.

Even if they had the money, trying to get any deal over the line would have been a difficult task. After all, Toney had been touted in some circles as an £80m transfer waiting to happen while another target in Victor Osimhen is set to cost over £100m.

Arsenal reportedly 'want' the Brentford striker and Bees manager Thomas Frank has already admitted it's likely he'll be moved on in the summer.

Frank recently stated: "It is relatively obvious that Ivan Toney will probably be sold this summer. "We also know what he is worth. I don't think there are many strikers in the world who are better than him right now."

Toney's response was rather damning, suggesting the Dane no longer wanted him in west London. This feels like a marriage reaching breaking point as the next transfer window fast approaches.

Mikel Arteta and Co seemingly have the perfect opportunity to acquire the striker, then, but agreeing on a fee for a man with three goals in four outings since his return from a betting ban will be the major stumbling block.

Therefore, are there other options? Well, turning to the academy, something Arteta hasn't favoured too much, could be a solution.

Arsenal's academy solution

The Arsenal boss has overseen the development of Bukayo Saka during his tenure in north London but as this Arsenal squad gets better and the demands become greater, he's not favoured the usage of the Hale End academy.

Considering Saka's breakthrough it's rather disappointing. It meant the end for the free-scoring Folarin Balogun in London and it's also seen Omari Hutchinson bite the dust too, moving to Chelsea.

Lino Sousa has now departed for Aston Villa but thankfully, some of the club's brightest young talents remain. One of those is Ethan Nwaneri.

The 16-year-old became the youngest ever player to feature in the Premier League when he was a substitute against none other than Toney's Brentford, and was used again for the first time since that debut outing versus West Ham last weekend.

In time another 16-year-old could become Arsenal's striking solution. Toney may well be signed but if the club are priced out in a few months time and thus, opt to stick with their current options in the summer, we could well see a blossoming academy talent unleashed sparingly.

That happens to be Chido Obi-Martin. You may well know the name. He went viral earlier this season for scoring ten goals in one game against Liverpool. Yes, ten. 10. It's a staggering accomplishment.

Talk about putting pressure on yourself too. In an official capacity, the vibrant attacker has found the net three times in six outings for Jack Wilshere's U18s this term and has already made his debut for the U21 side, featuring twice in Premier League 2 to date.

The teenager seems to have a habit of scoring goals by the bucketload, netting a hat-trick versus Southampton this term and also scoring four goals in one game for Denmark's U16s back in August.

Having trained with the first team too, it's clear that Obi-Martin is on the radar of Arteta and if Nwaneri's fleeting appearances are anything to go by, he could be seen in the first-team before too long.

Described as a "very special" talent by Arsenal pundit Adrian Clarke, it would be unrealistic to suggest Obi-Martin could get anywhere near Toney at this moment in time.

That said, should the Gunners fail to get a move over the line this summer then diving into the academy could be a serious consideration for Arteta and his coaching staff. The teenager will not become an overnight hit but if they invest in his development, they could unearth a prospect capable of becoming a real star in a few years time.

Arsenal’s 4/10 man should be sold after Fulham defeat

Arsenal's hopes of finally lifting another Premier League crown took a mammoth hit away at Fulham on Sunday afternoon.

The back end of 2023 has not been kind to the Gunners who now only have one win to show for their efforts in their last five games.

The defeat against West Ham was perhaps unfortunate, no matter how poor they were in both boxes. Indeed, they registered a whopping 77 touches in the opposition's penalty area without scoring.

This time they did score as they ultimately slipped to a 2-1 defeat. On this occasion, they certainly did deserve it. This was one of the worst performances under Mikel Arteta's reign so far and leaves them in a battle to secure a top-four berth, let alone challenge for the title.

They are now level on points with Manchester City and could slip even further behind in the race if Liverpool beat Newcastle on New Year's Day.

There were a host of nominees for the Gunners' worst performer on the day, but Eddie Nketiah was sadly one player who didn't stand up when it mattered at Craven Cottage.

Eddie Nketiah's performance in numbers

This was a glorious opportunity for the English forward to stake a claim to Arteta. After all, he already has a hat-trick this season in the league – against Sheffield United – and Gabriel Jesus hasn't exactly been prolific, scoring just three Premier League goals.

However, this is a player who now hasn't scored away from home in the top flight for a year. He ends 2023 without an away goal to his name at this level; a statistic that rather sums up the attacker's laboured approach to the game.

There is no doubting that Nketiah is a good finisher. He's a cracking poacher but the fact of the matter is he doesn't possess the tools to be a threat against a low block. The 24-year-old also doesn't offer a great amount in the build-up phase either.

That was seen first-hand against Fulham were he dropped an "utterly anonymous" performance as SPORTbible's Tom Marshall-Bailey put it.

This was a torrid afternoon for Nketiah with the striker perhaps rightfully earning just a 4/10 match rating courtesy of the Standard. That may even be rather generous for a man who managed just 24 touches of the ball – six fewer than goalkeeper David Raya – and only eight accurate passes in 90 minutes of play.

Nketiah offered very little throughout, managing just one chance of note, firing wide from a tight angle during the first half.

Nketiah's future at Arsenal

In truth, it would be a great surprise if the forward's time at Arsenal came to an end in January but if the Gunners are serious about toppling Manchester City come next May, they need an upgrade.

They don't just need an upgrade on Nketiah, however. They need a more natural goalscorer than Jesus too.

A deal for Ivan Toney is one the club "want" to do as per Miguel Delaney of the Independent but with a £100m asking price previously touted, splashing such an amount of cash in January will not be easy.

That said, even before a striker arrives, raising funds by selling Nketiah might not be the worst idea. His overall goal tally speaks volumes and he's attracted interest from across the league too.

Only this weekend was it reported by The Daily Mail that Arsenal had rejected an enquiry from Crystal Palace for the former Leeds loanee.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

Well, after this display, it may not be a surprise if they chase up a few bids over the course of the next month. Nketiah will very likely be an Arsenal player once the window closes, but that is a sad fact that speaks volumes of the club's recent plight. They need to get rid, and get rid soon.

Incessant rain washes out second day's play between New Zealand and Bangladesh too

Rain continued to play havoc with the Wellington Test with two full days now washed out. The call-off came at 4.30 pm local time after umpires Ruchira Palliyaguruge and Paul Reiffel had conducted their third inspection. It probably didn’t help that there was no wind all day – which is ironic since this is the windy city – ensuring dark clouds kept hovering over Basin Reserve.Unlike the first day however, both the Bangladesh and the New Zealand players turned up at the ground at around 4 pm and there was likelihood of play for at least an hour in the evening session. But just after the groundstaff had completed most of their work, another spell of rain came by and ruined everything. There is more forecast of rain on the third day too.Bangladesh coach Steve Rhodes said it was a frustrating time for his team but probably best that neither side had to bat for such a short period in the third session.New Zealand’s batting coach Craig McMillan said, “Three days is a long time. Conditions are challenging for the batsmen. All three results are possible in this game. We have to be switched on tomorrow and ready to go.”The last time there was no play over the first two days of a Test in New Zealand was in 2001 – the Hamilton game between the same two teams.

Ashley Giles open to splitting England coaching roles again despite tough lessons of 2014

Ashley Giles has played down any suggestion of a rift between himself and Andy Flower on his first day as the ECB’s new director of England cricket, and insists that the difficulties the pair endured as concurrent head coaches of the one-day and Test squads back in 2013-14 does not mean that the principle of split coaching should be ruled out going forward. One of Giles’ first duties, in the wake of his unveiling at Lord’s on Wednesday morning, will be to begin the search for England’s new head coach, with the current incumbent, Trevor Bayliss, due to stand down after this summer’s double-header of the World Cup and the Ashes.Bayliss, who was appointed by Giles’ predecessor Andrew Strauss back in 2015, has indicated that he will not be seeking an extension to his contract, and with England due to fly out to the Caribbean to begin their Test series against West Indies on Friday, Giles knows that a smooth transition will be crucial to England’s fortunes.”I’m hoping to catch up with Trev over the next couple of days down at the airport before they fly off but he’s made it pretty clear he’s leaving,” Giles told Talksport.”Clearly the new coaching structure is going to be front and centre and there’s a lot to think about. There’s been a lot made of two coaches – one specialist under one [head] coach. There are a lot of different options and I need some time to look at everything.””Myself and Andy Flower split the role. I think it can work, absolutely. The challenges of one guy doing it is the workload, especially going into the next couple of years with the World Test Championship and T20 World Cups back-to-back.”Giles was sacked as England’s one-day coach in 2014 after an ignominious defeat to Netherlands sealed their fate in that year’s World T20, with Flower also departing following England’s dismal 5-0 defeat in the Ashes. England have resisted the temptation to split their coaching set-up since, with Peter Moores’ short-lived return giving way to the Bayliss era, in which he has worked closely across all formats with his long-term deputy, Paul Farbrace. However, looking back on the events of that turbulent winter, Giles insisted it was an issue of timing, rather than personality, that sealed the fate of England’s teams. However, he added that crucial lessons would have to be learnt if England are to head down a similar route in the future.”There’s no problem with mine and Andy’s relationship,” he told Sky Sports. “We worked as the two head coaches, but I think the timing was tricky. The cycle we were going through as a team, the unravelling of that side through that Ashes in Australia and of course the Netherlands debacle in Bangladesh when I was T20 head coach at the World Cup.”It was not a great period for both of us, but does that mean that split coaches can’t work? I don’t think so. We need to look at all options going forward, but one thing that myself and Andy are, are different people.”And when you lead environments, there are different cultures and there’s going to be slightly different messaging. That’s not that one’s right and one’s wrong, we’re just different people and that’s something to think about going forward.”Giles was appointed by the ECB last month, after Strauss decided to step down in order to spend more time with his family. Strauss’ wife, Ruth, died in December after a year-long battle with cancer.
