Mariners' Cole Young Had Emotional Call With Family After Getting Called Up to Bigs

Cole Young, a fast-rising infield prospect in the Seattle Mariners organization, played in the Futures Game in Texas last season as part of baseball's All-Star festivities. Less than a year later he's found himself with the big club, getting the callup for the Mariners' May 31 tilt against the the Minnesota Twins. The move paid immediate dividends as Young drove in the game-winning run in the 11th inning with a chopper to first base.

It was a magical moment for the young player as he realized the culmination of a dream. But an even better highlight from the weekend may be the phone call he shared with his parents to give them the good news that he was moving from Tacoma to Seattle and competing on the sport's biggest stage.

The Mariners released video of that emotional call and it's awesome.

This is the good stuff. Every single time we see one of these it's impossible not to think about the long journey from Little League to the big leagues and how much time and energy these player's entire families put into the realization of a dream. At one point Young says he's going to cry but he honestly keeps it together pretty well in front of the cameras. He says he was surprised by the opportunity and was minding his own business in the dugout when he got the update.

"I had no idea," he said. "That was so surprising."

Hampshire slip into relegation mix as Sussex escape with draw

Rain again thwarts visitors’ push for victory on same day that they receive points deduction

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay11-Sep-2025A bad day for Hampshire ended with them flirting with first division relegation after rain frustrated their attempt to beat Sussex at Hove.Only 21 overs were possible on the final day at the 1st Central County Ground and between the showers Sussex, who needed 278 to win, reached 84 for 3 before a final downpour at 4pm ended play with opener Tom Haines unbeaten on 40. Both teams took 11 points. That at least covered the eight points Hampshire had been deducted earlier in the day for preparing a poor pitch when Sussex won at the Utilita Bowl in May.Hampshire have a trip to Somerset next week before they finish the season at home to title-chasing Surrey.Having been up against it after two days, Sussex will be relieved with an outcome which stretches the gap between them and the bottom two. They host ninth-placed Yorkshire next week before finishing the season against the side currently bottom, Worcestershire, at New Road. After the entire third day was washed out, more rain delayed the start until 2pm, leaving Sussex 51 overs to score a further 241 at 4.7 runs per over.On a pitch which was becoming more comfortable to bat on, Hampshire needed to take every opportunity going but in the third over of the day wicketkeeper Ben Brown put down a chance low to his right offered by night watcher Sean Hunt off Kyle Abbott. In the next over Hunt edged Keith Barker between second and third slips.Just 27 minutes were possible before another shower drove the players off with six overs lost but Hampshire then struck twice in successive overs to give themselves hope. Hunt had done his job, using up 61 balls in making 19 before left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin pinned him lbw half forward. In the next over Barker picked up a deserved wicket when Ollie Carter was bowled by a delivery which nipped back onto his off stump. But only 8.4 overs more were bowled either side of tea before another downpour was quickly followed by handshakes on the dressing-room balcony.

Nottingham Forest battling Bayern Munich to sign "seriously impressive" ace

Nottingham Forest have now joined the race to sign Anderlecht midfielder Nathan De Cat, and the Belgian club’s asking price has been revealed.

Forest have set out to bolster their options in the middle of the park, amid growing doubts over the future of Elliot Anderson, as it was revealed the central midfielder would be “very keen” on a move to Old Trafford, with Manchester United now readying a £60m bid.

Chelsea have also started laying the groundwork to sign the England international, with the Tricky Trees’ current Premier League position potentially putting them in a vulnerable position when it comes to keeping hold of their best players.

Sean Dyche’s side remain in 19th place, despite an uptick in results since the arrival of the former Everton boss, meaning it would not be a surprise if Anderson decides to leave, and it would be a very difficult task to replace the 23-year-old.

However, Forest have now joined the race for another potential future star, who is being targeted by a number of clubs from across Europe.

Nottingham Forest join continental bidding war for Nathan De Cat

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Nottingham Forest have now joined a continental bidding war for Anderlecht midfielder De Cat, alongside Bayern Munich and a whole host of rival Premier League clubs.

Having made a very impressive start to the season, the 17-year-old is also of interest to Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, meaning the Belgian club believe they are in a position to demand an initial £18m fee, with add-ons seeing the total package rise to around £31m.

There is a suggestion the Tricky Trees believe the youngster could make an immediate impact, despite his age, with the report stating they are ‘seeking a spark to ignite their survival bid.’

Having already emerged as a regular starter for Anderlecht, making 19 appearances in all competitions this season, the teenager may not be too far off Premier League level, and there are signs he could go on to be a top player.

Scout Ben Mattinson was left particularly impressed by the young midfielder last season, providing an overview of his key strengths on X.

That said, an initial £18m fee would be a fair amount to spend on a youngster yet to prove himself in a major league, and it would be a real gamble for Forest to sign De Cat as a potential difference-maker in the relegation battle, so Dyche should probably look at proven Premier League players instead.

Arteta says "extraordinary" Arsenal star is now on a "different" level after Prague win

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has piled praise on a player who’s taken his game to a “different dimension” after their 3-0 win at Slavia Prague.

It was no Viktor Gyokeres, no problem for the Gunners on Tuesday evening as Arteta’s side extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 13 games on the bounce.

Arsenal 3-0 Nottingham Forest

Athletic Bilbao 0-2 Arsenal

Arsenal 1-1 Man City

Port Vale 0-2 Arsenal

Newcastle 1-2 Arsenal

Arsenal 2-0 Olympiacos

Arsenal 2-0 West Ham

Fulham 0-1 Arsenal

Arsenal 4-0 Atlético Madrid

Arsenal 1-0 Crystal Palace

Arsenal 2-0 Brighton

Burnley 0-2 Arsenal

Slavia Prague 0-3 Arsenal

As Arsenal sweat over the fitness of their summer signing, amid reports of a potential hamstring injury which could keep Gyokeres out until the North London derby, Arteta still found a way to cope without the Swede.

Mikel Merino was deployed as a makeshift number nine, which was a flashback to near the end of last season, and the Spaniard duly impressed with two goals in the Czech Republic soon after Bukayo Saka opened the floodgates with a penalty on the half-hour mark.

It was a routine win for the north Londoners in the end, with a much-changed Arsenal side impressing as summer signing Piero Hincapie made his first Champions League start.

Hale End academy graduate Ethan Nwaneri was also handed the nod by Arteta before Arsenal’s boss introduced fellow teenagers Max Dowman and Andre Annous in the second-half, with a host of homegrown talents given the chance to shine on Europe’s biggest stage.

Merino has stolen most of the headlines after proving his worth as a capable striking deputy once again, while Hincapie showcased exactly why Arsenal brought him on loan from Bayer Leverkusen.

However, according to Arteta, the player everybody needs to be taking more note of is none other than right-back Jurrien Timber.

The Dutchman has been nothing short of exceptional since coming back from that ACL injury in his debut season, and has since worked his way into becoming an undroppable for Arteta’s side.

Arsenal are now working on a new and improved deal for Timber, with club legend Ray Parlour also branding him one of their players of the season thus far.

Mikel Arteta says Jurrien Timber is on a "different dimension"

Speaking to the press after Arsenal’s win at Prague, Arteta claimed that Timber is now on a “different dimension” and setting the standard for his Arsenal teammates.

The Netherlands international continues to showcase why he’s perhaps one of Arsenal’s more underrated stars, and the feeling within N5 is that Timber is actually one of world football’s best full-backs, according to journalist Graeme Bailey recently.

The 24-year-old is due a pay rise akin to the likes of Leandro Trossard and David Raya recently.

According to WhoScored, Timber is actually Arsenal’s third-best performer in the Premier League, just behind Declan Rice and Gabriel, and none of his teammates have made more tackles per 90 in the top flight.

Timber’s form is the main reason why Ben White hasn’t got much of a look-in since returning to fitness, but Arteta won’t be complaining as he boasts the arguably strongest full-back roster in England right now.

"Incredible" £70m ace now ready to reject Real Madrid for Liverpool in 2026

Despite spending bigger than ever this summer, Liverpool could reportedly splash the cash once again next year to welcome a player who is ready to reject Real Madrid.

Slot sends reminder about "great" Liverpool business

Even after winning four from four in the Premier League, Arne Slot and Liverpool have faced plenty of criticism. The Reds have needed four, dramatic late winners to maintain the only 100% record in England’s top flight so far this season in a run that is yet to feature a goal or assist from big-money arrival Florian Wirtz.

As he continues to adjust to life in England, there’s been plenty of talk about whether he will prove his worth at Anfield and about Liverpool’s general spending. Slot, however, was quick to remind reporters that there were also a number of sales at Anfield this summer in his press conference before Liverpool’s meeting with Atletico Madrid.

The Dutchman also had his say on Wirtz, telling reporters: “There is so much focus on Florian, but those already here haven’t scored four goals or produced 12 assists either.”

The good news for Liverpool is that, whilst the former Bayer Leverkusen star is not at his best quite yet, they’ve won four games from four and should only get better as a collective.

Their spending may not be done after the summer just gone, either. Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes sent a statement of intent in the last transfer window, which could quickly see them return to the market in 2026. Reports are even suggesting that one player is now ready to reject Real Madrid in favour of an Anfield move.

Wharton ready to reject Real Madrid for Liverpool

According to reports in Spain, Adam Wharton is ready to reject Real Madrid in favour of joining Liverpool in 2026. The England international has been priced at around £70m by Crystal Palace, who could also lose Marc Guehi to the Reds next summer. In a double swoop, Slot could land two of the most important players at Selhurst Park.

In Slot’s new double pivot, it could be argued that Wharton would be the perfect addition. Last season, the Englishman kept up with Alexis Mac Allister in possession and recovered possession more than the Liverpool star. That’s how talented Wharton is and that’s the level that he should be competing with every week.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid: Prediction, team news, injury updates and more

The Reds are set to turn their attention towards the Champions League.

ByTom Cunningham Sep 17, 2025

Dubbed “incredible” by former Crystal Palace teammate Eberechi Eze, Wharton is still just 21 years old and is yet to even reach the peak of his powers. If he continues his current rise, then £70m could quickly turn into a bargain deal for Liverpool next summer.

Smriti Mandhana's RCB ready to kickstart homecoming party

The Indian players have stepped up for RCB while MI have relied heavily on their overseas players so far

Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, February 21, 2025
What to expect: RCB’s Indian unit vs MI’s overseas playersThe formidable RCB side will be looking to continue their imperious run as they enter the home leg. They have a lot going for them this season and though they are without several match-winners from last season, their Indian players have stepped up. Smriti Mandhana continued her purple patch, Richa Ghosh looked in fine touch against Delhi Capitals after her blinder against Gujarat Giants, and Renuka Singh’s new-ball bowling has also been a big positive. They will want to make the most of playing in front of their home crowd at Chinnaswamy, where they won three out of five games last season. They will play four home matches this season. For MI, though, it’s been all about the overseas players so far. They have banked on Nat Sciver-Brunt’s excellent form with the bat and ball. She followed up her 59-ball 80 not out in the loss against DC with a solo effort of 57 against Giants and gave her side their first win of the season. In the bowling department, Hayley Mathews and Amelia Kerr have been their key wicket-takers. MI will be looking for more support from their Indian line-up, especially in the batting department, to put up bigger scores.Team news and likely XIsRCB left Prema Rawat out and brought in senior left-arm spinner Ekta Bisht for the match against DC. Bisht marked her return with figures of 2 for 35, dismissing Marizanne Kapp and Jess Jonassen.RCB (probable): 1 Smriti Mandhana (capt), 2 Danni Wyatt-Hodge, 3 Ellyse Perry, 4 Raghvi Bist, 5 Richa Ghosh (wk), 6 Kanika Ahuja, 7 Georgia Wareham, 8 Ekta Bisht, 9 Kim Garth, 10 VJ Joshitha, 11 Renuka SinghMI made two changes for their match against Giants, bringing in Parunika Sisodia for Saika Ishaque and G Kamalini for Jintimani Kalita. Kamalini played down the order and scored a boundary off the only ball she faced, while Sisodia went for 20 runs in her two overs.MI (probable): 1 Yastika Bhatia (wk), 2 Hayley Matthews, 3 Nat Sciver-Brunt, 4 Harmanpreet Kaur (capt), 5 Amelia Kerr, 6 G Kamalini, 7 S Sajana, 8 Amanjot Kaur, 9 Sanskriti Gupta, 10 Shabnim Ismail, 11 Parunika SisodiaPlayers to watch: Renuka Singh and Hayley MathewsRenuka Singh had a lacklustre WPL 2024 but has staged a superb comeback this season. Continuing from where she left off for India in the West Indies ODIs in Vadodara, where she picked up 10 wickets in three games, she has used the assistance off the pitch with the new ball to take five wickets in RCB’s last two games. After the win against DC, she admitted to have worked on her pace and outswing. She will be looking to maintain her rhythm as the action moves to Bengaluru.Hayley Matthews may not have had great outings with the bat so far but her bowling has been valuable. In the first game, she dismissed the dangerous Shafali Verma with her offspin. In her second match, she finished with frugal figures of 3 for 16 to restrict Giants to 120 as she took the Player-of-the-Match award.Stats that matter RCB have won two out of their five games against MI so far in the WPL. At the centre of those two wins was Ellyse Perry. After bagging stunning figures of 6 for 15 in the reverse fixture in Delhi, she scored 66 off 50 in the Eliminator to lead RCB to the final. All six matches in the WPL 2025 so far have been won by the chasing side.

"Tough to take" – Leeds and Farke now given new injury blow to "key" star

Leeds United have also shared the news of an injury blow to a “key” star after getting knocked out of the EFL Cup to Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday evening.

Leeds knocked out of EFL Cup with embarrassing Sheffield Wednesday defeat

Daniel Farke said he was embarrassed and apologised to Leeds fans after his side crashed out of the EFL Cup on penalties. Against an extremely young Owls side, the Whites fielded a strong side and required Jayden Bogle to cancel out goalkeeper Karl Darlow’s second-half own goal to take the tie to penalties.

However, misses from Joel Piroe, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Sean Longstaff saw the Whites lose 3-0 in the shootout. Talking after the game, Farke said:

“We have to take all of the criticism and we are self-critical because out of all the chances we should put four or five goals to bed. It’s always a bit annoying and you feel a bit embarrassed as a Premier League side, but we have been involved in so many games on this level, especially in the cup – this is why there are so many surprises and shock results.

“Even the team in the lower league can win such a game. Today was one of those days and congratulations to Sheffield Wednesday.”

When asked for his message to Leeds fans, Farke said: “You can feel for them. We’re sorry anyhow. We feel a bit embarrassed that we don’t go through in such a game. We can just say ‘sorry’ because they made the trip and wanted to celebrate.”

Farke reveals injury to Leeds star Tanaka

Missing from the defeat at Hillsborough was midfielder Ao Tanaka. The Japan international was replaced in the 5-0 defeat at the Emirates on Saturday and, like Ethan Ampadu, has suffered an MCL injury and will be out for weeks. When asked about Tanaka’s injury, Farke said:

Tanaka starred in the opening day win over Everton and has been a vital player for Leeds since joining from Fortuna Dusseldorf last summer for just £3m.

However, with both Ampadu and Tanaka sidelined for the foreseeable, Farke will have to rely on Longstaff, Anton Stach and Ilia Gruev, or look to bring in another midfielder before the transfer deadline.
