Frank is set to welcome West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus to Hotspur Way after Spurs and the east Londoners shook hands on a £55 million deal earlier this week, with the 24-year-old coming in as their first major signing of the window.

They’re also set to sign Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White for around £60 million, who’s poised for a medical today following quick-fire talks, with Daniel Levy making serious statements in a show of backing to his new manager.

However, while these signings are undoubtedly a huge boost for Frank, it is worth noting that the arrivals of Kudus and Gibbs-White means that Spurs will “almost certainly” have to sell at least one player (The Telegraph).

This is due to their current abundance of non-locally trained players, which will go up to 24 after Kudus comes in. As things stand, this will force Tottenham to tackle their Champions League campaign with a reduced squad list, as UEFA requires at least eight players of a 25-man Champions League squad be ‘locally trained’.

If Spurs or any other club fail to meet this requirement, the maximum number of ‘A-list’ players will be reduced to compensate for it.

With the Lilywhites now forced into the position of potentially needing to sell squad members after Kudus’ signing, even if Gibbs-White falls into the ‘locally trained’ category after coming through Wolves’ academy, it remains to be seen what impact this UEFA headache will have.

In terms of the best candidates for Daniel Levy to consider shipping out the Spurs exit door, there are a few.

They’ve already agreed to loan Alejo Veliz to former club Rosario Central, confirming the transfer earlier this week, but there are a few who could join the Argentine.

Frank won’t want to lose Cristian Romero to Atlético Madrid, but the La Liga side are still attempting to sign him (AS), while there is a belief that Tottenham are much more open to selling Richarlison after an injury-blighted 2024/2025.

Son Heung-min has also entered the final 12 months of his contract, and Levy could be tempted to make money back off the South Korean’s sale, rather than lose him for free next year, amid interest from Saudi Arabia and Los Angeles FC.

Yves Bissouma wants to leave Tottenham and join Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahçe

According to Turkish journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, Levy could have another sale opportunity in the form of Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma.

The Mali international, like Son, has entered the final 12 months of his contract, and the north Londoners are prepared to take a small loss on the initial £25 million they paid to sign him from Brighton in 2022.

Sabuncuoğlu states, via news aggregator Fener Ajans on X, that Levy will let Bissouma leave for £20 million this summer, and Fenerbache are seriously interested in the 28-year-old. The reporter also claims Jose Mourinho has identified Bissouma as his top midfield target for the Süper Lig giants, and he wants to join the former Tottenham boss in Turkey.

The £100,000-per-week ace was exceptional for Ange Postecoglou during the 59-year-old’s debut season in the dugout, and has displayed flashes of brilliance since, with James Maddison calling his teammate a “ridiculous player” at times.

However, the trouble with Bissouma has been surrounding his consistency, and now could potentially be the time to cash in.

Arsenal had a proposal to sign Sesko last summer rejected, with the Slovenia international choosing to sign a contract extension and shaking hands on a gentlemen’s agreement with Leipzig that he can leave this year or next year instead.

Arsenal also tried to sign Sesko in January, but the player and his club wanted him to see out the Bundesliga season (Ben Jacobs).

Gyokeres, meanwhile, has just fired Sporting to their first domestic double in two decades with a sensational 54 goals in all competitions – so the Swede’s appeal to Gunners director Andrea Berta is glaringly obvious.

According to the BBC this week, Arsenal were simultaneously working on deals for both Sesko and Gyokeres, before making a final decision on which centre-forward to formally pursue.

Now, it appears they’re favouring Sesko, with talks advancing on that front, according to Fabrizio Romano and other reliable media sources.

Before Sesko, it was reliably reported that Newcastle United star Alexander Isak was actually Arsenal’s “dream” signing.

However, the striker’s reported £150 million-plus price tag and Newcastle’s qualification for the Champions League make this deal incredibly difficult.

There is also the matter of Liverpool, with journalist Graeme Bailey telling The Boot Room that Arsenal are backing off in the race for Isak, partly because the north Londoners theorise that Arne Slot’s title-winners are in “pole position” if he does leave St. James’ Park.

“Isak is the dream, and I think because Liverpool’s confidence, that’s where Arsenal’s interest is waning slightly,” said Bailey.

“I’ve been told Liverpool are in pole position. If Isak leaves, Liverpool are in pole position, and I think Arsenal learned that and that’s why they backed off slightly as well. Not just because they can’t afford him, because Arsenal probably could if they wanted to.”

Isak’s 27 goals in all competitions tell just half the story, with Eddie Howe’s Swede proving an absolute nightmare for defences to deal with across 24/25.

It would surely take something very special to convince Newcastle to sell the 25-year-old, and even a record-shattering bid might not be enough.

Leeds United’s frontline has played a huge role in their success throughout the Championship in 2024/25, undoubtedly contributing to their ability to claim the title.

The Whites registered a staggering tally of 95 goals in their 46 league outings – the highest tally in the division, scoring 24 more than the next highest team in Norwich City.

Joel Piroe was the club’s highest goalscorer during the title-winning campaign, with his tally of 19 goals also the most of any player in the second-tier, claiming the Championship’s Golden Boot award.

However, if the club are to survive in the Premier League next time around, they will need added reinforcements to hand boss Daniel Farke with the tools to improve the squad.

With the transfer window just around the corner, work has already been done behind the scenes to ensure a quick start is made this summer, leading to numerous names linked with a switch to Elland Road.

The latest on Leeds’ move to sign Callum Wilson this summer

Over the last couple of days, Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has been the latest name linked with a move ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.

The 33-year-old, who’s out of contract this summer, has spent the last five years at St James’ Park, registering 49 goals and playing a key role in their transformation over recent seasons.

However, they don’t appear to be alone in their chase for the former Bournemouth star, with West Ham United also said to be in the race for his signature.

His goalscoring record in England’s top-flight would undoubtedly be a key point for Farke in their pursuit, but Wilson has endured a torrid run with injuries that has restricted him to just two league starts this campaign.

Such a deal would likely be a risk, with the centre-forward likely to command a hefty wage given his experience, which could result in the Whites targeting other attackers this summer.

Undoubtedly, despite Piroe’s success in the Championship this campaign, Leeds will be targeting a talisman who is capable of stepping up to the plate in the Premier League.

The Dutchman has never featured in England’s top-flight, leading to question marks whether he will be able to cut it and be a success in such a division.

Wilson could be an attractive option given his current contract status, but his injury record should see the hierarchy steer clear of any potential move this summer.

They may have been better off keeping hold of Spanish talent Rafa Muijca, with the 26-year-old taking his career to the next level after departing Elland Road back in 2021.

He spent two years in Yorkshire, linking up with the youth setup after joining from Barcelona B, but was unable to break through the ranks and subsequently joined Las Palmas.

Fast forward to 2025, the striker is currently plying his trade for Qatari outfit Al-Sadd, currently enjoying one of the best goalscoring patches of his career – showcasing what the Whites are missing out on.

Mujica has registered 20 goals in his 27 appearances for his new outfit, offering a clinical edge that could’ve been of use to the Whites had they kept hold of him.

When comparing his stats from the current campaign, he’s massively outperformed transfer target Wilson, highlighting how big of a mistake the hierarchy made in allowing him to depart.

The Spaniard has not only massively outscored the Englishman, but has managed more shots on target per 90 along with a higher shot-on-target accuracy rate – such a record that would’ve bolstered Farke’s attack.

He’s also managed to complete more of the passes he’s attempted, as well as more aerials won, with his skillset potentially offering an all-around option in the final third had they kept hold of him.

Undoubtedly, it’s frustrating that the club made such a mistake in allowing the talisman to depart, with their loss now appearing to be Al-Sadd’s gain in 2025.

Whilst they won’t be able to get him back this summer, other targets will need to be explored, but given Wilson’s measly record and injury history, the Whites should be steering clear of a move for the Magpies star.

The race for promotion to the Premier League from the Championship always makes for eye-catching viewing, and the 2024/25 season was no different, with Leeds United, Burnley and Sheffield United all battling for the top two automatic spots.

The Whites and Clarets were successful in the regular season in the end, thanks to both clubs reaching the 100-point mark. But who are the best Championship teams in recent history?

In this list, we look at the teams with the highest second-tier points tallies since three points were awarded for a win in 1981/82.

Harry Redknapp guided Portsmouth into the Premier League back in 2002/03, winning 29 of their 46 games. In fact, they lost just one of their first 15 games and netted just shy of 100 league goals, pipping Leicester City to the title.

Svetoslav Todorov was Pompey’s top scorer that year with 26 goals in all competitions in a squad which included Paul Merson, Yakubu and Eddie Howe.

11 Wolverhampton Wanderers (2017/18) 99 points (GD +43)

More recently, Wolverhampton Wanderers stormed the Championship under Nuno Espirito Santo with a squad which included some high-profile players. The likes of Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota brought the Portuguese flair to Molineux, whereas Conor Coady, Matt Doherty and Barry Douglas were regulars at the back with John Ruddy in goal.

Wolves topped the table from the 15th game week through to the season’s conclusion, winning 30, and then went on to qualify for European football in their first season back in the Premier League.

10 Chelsea (1988/89) 99 points (GD +46)

Another side who just missed out on three figures was Chelsea way back in 1988/89 under Bobby Campbell, and they would have hit that milestone if it wasn’t for such a slow start, which saw them go winless in their opening six games.

However, the Blues ended up losing just five second-tier games all season and boasted a side which had star forward Kerry Dixon, who netted 25 league goals. The biggest win of that memorable campaign at Stamford Bridge was a 7-0 victory over Walsall.

9 Manchester City (2001/02) 99 points (GD +56)

The third and final team to narrowly miss out on 100 points was Manchester City under Kevin Keegan. The Sky Blues lost just once at home and scored an incredible 108 goals throughout the campaign, with Shaun Goater and Darren Huckerby both scoring more than 20.

City would have had more points if it weren’t for their inconsistent form on the road, with Keegan’s side failing to pick up maximum points in 11 of their 23 away fixtures.

8 Burnley (2024/25) 100 points (GD +53)

Burnley made it back-to-back Championship campaigns in triple figures, with Scott Parker taking over from Vincent Kompany in 2024/25, as the former Clarets boss went off to Bayern Munich.

Despite finishing second on goal difference, Burnley lost just twice and remarkably only conceded 16 goals all season, which obliterated the previous Championship record of 30.

If only they had scored more often, they could have had the league sewn up for themselves – the Lancashire side recorded 12 goalless draws throughout the campaign.

7 Leeds United (2024/25) 100 points (GD +65)

Returning to the Premier League at the second time of asking under Daniel Farke, Leeds United put play-off final disappointment behind them by recording their best Championship season to date.

The Whites were only beaten on four occasions, and won their last six on the spin to edge ahead of Burnley in the battle for silverware, with their superior goal difference handing them a second Championship trophy in six seasons.

In truth, Leeds could well have ended up with a more impressive points tally, as some shocking goalkeeping threatened to derail their promotion hopes altogether.

Vincent Kompany made an instant impact as a manager in England after taking over at Burnley following their relegation in 2022.

The former Manchester City defender, who joined from Anderlecht, transformed the squad with a number of new signings who helped take the Clarets to the title ahead of Sheffield United.

Burnley lost just three matches in 46 and sealed promotion with seven matches remaining, which remains a Championship record. They then secured the title with a 1-0 victory away to rivals Blackburn Rovers, with the likes of Nathan Tella, Manuel Benson and Jay Rodriguez all bagging 10 or more goals.

5 Fulham (2000/01) 101 points (GD +58)

Fulham also finished on 101 points at the beginning of the millennium under Jean Tigana. Things were looking promising in the summer after not conceding a goal in pre-season and the Cottagers started as they meant to go on, winning their first 11 league games.

Promotion was all but sealed by Christmas when they were 10 points clear at the top and despite more defeats in the second half of the campaign, ended up winning the title comfortably in a squad which included Steve Finnan, Chris Coleman and Louis Saha, who topped the scoring charts with 27 league goals.

4 Leicester City (2013/14) 102 points (GD +40)

Leicester City broke a number of club records under Nigel Pearson 10 years ago, with their points tally possibly under threat from Maresca’s side this time around.

The Foxes won 31 games to beat Burnley to the title, losing just one of their final 26 games. Kasper Schmeichel, Wes Morgan, Danny Drinkwater, Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy all played their part in the second tier before going on to win the Premier League title two years later under Claudio Ranieri.

3 Newcastle United (2009/10) 102 points (GD +55)

Newcastle United also ended on 102 points and won the title four years prior under Chris Hughton, who was only named the permanent manager in October after a promising start as caretaker.

The Magpies would only lose once from the end of October until the end of the campaign, winning the title at Plymouth Argyle. Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll both scored 17 Championship goals that year, with Peter Lovenkrands and Shola Ameobi also hitting double figures.

Liverpool saw off neighbours Everton to make it a happy return to the Premier League, having missed last weekend’s action due to an early FA Cup exit, one week on from the March international break.

Candidly, the break came at the right time for Arne Slot’s side, whose imperious campaign suffered its most bruising blows in succession, a miserable week seeing Paris Saint-Germain advance in the Champions League before Newcastle United deservedly beat the Reds at Wembley to lift the Carabao Cup.

Slot, for all his brilliance, seems reluctant to enforce changes to his tried-and-tested starting line-up, but Liverpool have paid the price for such stubbornness after falling in each of the season’s competitive offshoots.

Victory against Everton was paramount. Anfield’s advantage at the top of the Premier League may be imperious at 12 points, but psychologically, recent setbacks required a bounce-back.

And bounce back Liverpool did. Curtis Jones, whose tactical dynamism seems to know no bounds, impressed in a moonlit right-back berth, but the biggest winner may well have been Diogo Jota, breaking his duck to expertly net the sole goal of the match, inching his team one step closer to the title.

It was a big night for Liverpool’s frontline, whose struggles since the turn of the calendar year have been scrutinised by pundits and online supporters alike.

Jota needed that goal. He’d gone 11 matches without scoring across all competitions for Liverpool and was spiralling toward a bleak end to the season, but he struck gold at the perfect time, adding his name to an illustrious list of derby-day heroes.

Dissenters online felt Luis Diaz was in an offside position in the build-up, but given that he wasn’t interfering with play and made no attempt to meet the ball, the official green-lit Jota’s well-taken goal.

It was a timely reminder that Jota, in spite of his recent woes, is a deadly man to have in the final third. Indeed, it was only last season that Jamie Carragher proclaimed the Portuguese to be “the best finisher” Liverpool have had in the Premier League.

Obviously, we’ve been treated to ‘better’ strikers in Red, but in terms of pure ball-striking ability when in space in the danger area, Jota’s one of the best for sure.

His balletic skip past Tim Iroegbunam, the shimmy to second-guess Everton’s meaty central defenders, the finish. Simple yet sublime. Jordan Pickford dove to Jota’s right, but Pickford’s dive was wrong, for Liverpool’s centre-forward deftly placed the ball leftwards, into an empty net.

The 28-year-old will now look to build on his performance. Make no mistake, Jota has been well below par in recent months, last scoring a goal against Nottingham Forest in mid-January. His prolific Liverpool career has been punctuated by injuries, and this term has been no different, Wednesday’s clash marking only the tenth top-flight start of the season.

This is particularly damning when considering Darwin Nunez has also failed to nail down a berth, leaving Slot to devise alternate measures.

Well, Jota will want to build, but Slot must now seek to implement another outside-the-box strategy to avoid late-season burnout and keep things fresh.

Having showcased his adaptability by fielding Jones at right-back, Liverpool’s boss should now place another of his troops in a fresh position.

Liverpool flop should be unleashed in new role

Slot might have a preferred starting line-up, but Liverpool have hardly been rigid in their football this season, playing in a myriad of different ways to get the job done.

Jota of course will want to use the win over Everton as a launchpad for a purple patch over the next two months, steering Liverpool over the finish line, but there’s little question that he’s been out of sorts recently. In fact, he was rather off the boil in the opening half.

That’s why Slot might want to unleash Federico Chiesa from a focal striking role over the coming weeks. Signed from Juventus last summer on a cut-price £12.5m deal, the versatile forward has endured a tough term in Liverpool.

Injuries have wrecked Chiesa’s development over the past several years. So impressive at Euro 2020 when Italy defeated England in the final to clinch gold, with a horrendous anterior cruciate ligament injury affecting the 27-year-old’s 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns.

The current campaign, a new chapter at Anfield, presented a clean slate for a talented player who has been described as a “wizard” by football media personality Roger Bennett, owing to his technical quality and fleet-footedness.

Moreover, the £150k-per-week star is a natural finisher, something that was perfectly illustrated by his late consolation goal at Wembley two weeks ago.

Chiesa was ostensibly brought in to cover Mohamed Salah at right wing, but given that he played the lion’s share of last season as Juventus’ striker, scoring nine goals and laying on three assists from 31 central appearances, Slot may well look to boldly drop Jota for a summer signing who is still waiting for their first Premier League start.
